Applications of MERRA-2 Data for Avian Migration, Biomass Burning, and Dusty Atmospheric Rivers

Three different applications of MERRA-2 data are presented. 1) Using radar data, we introduced a new concept for spatial patterns of bird migration across the contiguous U.S. This approach allowed us to use MERRA-2 data and learn that remote forcing in the tropical Pacific—through a chain of processes including atmospheric Rossby wave trains— controls the climatic conditions, associated with bird migration in North America. 2) We showed that emissions from biomass burning in the Congo Basin are partly controlled by the low-level winds, which are in turn associated with the intensity of the subtropical high in the Indian Ocean. Using back-trajectory analysis, we found that these emissions combined with their transport mechanism explain the interannual variability of black carbon in West Africa. 3) Our analysis showed that atmospheric rivers in the Middle East contribute to both heavy flood and dust transport within their corridor. We also found that warm advection and rain-on-snow effect of dusty atmospheric rivers further enhance the chance of flood through rapid snowmelt processes.

Striped Mullet Migration Patterns in the Indian River Lagoon: A Network Analysis Approach to Spatial Fisheries Management

Striped mullet (Mugil cephalus) are numerically abundant forage fish, highly valuable as prey and commercially valuable to humans. From September to December, mullet in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), Florida undergo an annual migration from inshore foraging habitats to oceanic spawning sites. However, their migratory pathways, in particular their intra-estuarine movement pathways, remain unknown. To address this knowledge gap, we utilized passive acoustic telemetry to assess the movement patterns of M. cephalus within the IRL. Thirty-two fish were tagged, generating usable tracks from 18 individuals. The mean (±s.d.) time that fish were detected in the array was ~38 ± 90 days, with the longest at 444 days. We also document the first evidence of skipped spawning in M. cephalus inhabiting waters of the southeastern United States. These data suggest impoundments around the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge appear to serve as important refugia for striped mullet while the Banana and Indian Rivers act as corridors during their inshore migratory movements. Through spatial fisheries management, high value habitat and connective elements utilized by mullet and other vital forage fish may be identified, to benefit both natural and human dynamics in estuarine systems.

An Approach to Reasoning Service Migration in Data and Reasoning Fabric (DRF) Implementation

In this paper we consider service migration problem for Data and Reasoning Fabric (DRF) enabled airspace operations assuming a fixed cloud/edge infrastructure with allocated computing, storage and power resources, where cloud/edge servers, and communication stations are in a wired connected network, while vehicles use a wireless network for communication. The objective is to automatically select the best location for the requested service execution, which achieves minimum cost while satisfying the user quality of service (QoS) and available resources constraints. To this end, estimates of the response time, consumed energy and total cost are defined for each potential compute location. A mixed-integer linear program is then formulated and solved to identify optimal compute locations given QoS constraints, network infrastructure limitations, with worst-case vehicle positioning. The approach is applied to trajectory re-planning use case to avoid a collision with an emergency vehicle in real time.

Distributed Target Tracking With Optimal Data Migration

The paper presents an Extended Kalman Filter based framework for airborne target tracking using dynamic information fusion from multi-modal sensors with geodiversity. First, the algorithm execution location is determined using an optimal data migration strategy, next the sensors information is dynamically fused at each estimation instance using validity flag for each sensor reading, finally the target estimation is updated based on the fused innovation vector. The approach is applied to synthetic data generated from the radar and camera models located on the ground for the simulated target flight in Reflection simulation environment.

Target Tracking with Distributed Sensing and Optimal Data Migration

The paper presents an Extended Kalman Filter based framework for airborne target tracking using adaptive information fusion from multi-modal multi-rate distributed sensors network. First, the tracking algorithm execution location is determined using an optimal data migration strategy, which also computes the associated delays for each sensor data to arrive at the computing location. Next, the fast (zero-delay) sensors information is dynamically fused in the filter correction procedure at the arrival instance of each valid sensor reading. Finally, the target estimation is updated based on the valid slow (delayed) data, which are grouped according to the delay-time steps before application of the Larsen's method. This approach is applied to the synthetic sensor data generated by means of the ground based radar and camera models for the simulated target flight in Reflection simulation environment.

Fiber length and orientation prevent migration in fluid filters

Stainless steel fiber web filter resists fiber migration which causes contamination of filtered fluids. This filter is capable of holding five times more particulate matter before arbitrary cutoff pressure drop and shows excellent retention in fuel flow at high rates.

Grain-boundary migration in KCl bicrystals

Boundary migration in melt-grown bicrystals of KCl containing pure twist boundaries was investigated. The experiments involve the use of bicrystal specimens in the shape of right-triangular prisms with the boundary parallel to one side.

Film breakers prevent migration of aqueous potassium hydroxide in fuel cells

Electrolyte film breakers made from polytetrafluoroethylene are installed in the reactant and water vapor removal outlets of each cell and sealed by elastomers. Use of these devices in the water vapor removal cavity outlets prevents loss of KOH solution through film migration during water removal.

Ionic migration and weathering in frozen Antarctic soils

Soils of continental Antarctica are forming in one of the most severe terrestrial environments. Continuously low temperatures and the scarcity of water in the liquid state result in the development of desert-type soils. In an earlier experiment to determine the degree to which radioactive Na(Cl-36) would migrate from a shallow point source in permafrost, movement was observed. To confirm this result, a similar experiment involving (Na-22)Cl was conducted. Significantly less movement of the Na-22 ion was observed. Ionic movement in the unfrozen interfacial films at mineral surfaces in frozen ground is held to be important in chemical weathering in Antarctic soils.

Evaluation of submarine strain-gage systems for monitoring coastal sediment migration

Single and multiple strain-gage systems were respectively evaluated as in situ point and areal sensors for monitoring sand-height variations in coastal environments. Static loading tests indicate that gage response pressure is linear for sand heights up to 24 inches. Response pressures are a function of both sand height and aggregate density, with density being influenced by both sediment texture and degree of compaction. Poorer sediment sorting and greater compaction result in higher response pressures. Field tests in a beach foreshore environment indicate that the gage systems are effective qualitative instruments for monitoring long-period migration trends of beach sediments; whereas, short-period responses are not sufficiently reliable. The durability and compactness of the gage systems must be substantially increased for effective field operations. It is recommended that the systems' qualitative potentials be further developed, whereas their development as quantitative instruments be terminated. Further development should emphasize the construction of remote recording systems designed for semipermanent installation.
