Nonlocal Metasurface with Resonance-Selective Nonlinear Wavefront Shaping

We demonstrate a nonlinear nonlocal metasurface supporting quasi-trapped modes that enable helicity-dependent wavefront shaping at third-harmonic wavelengths. The geometric phase is selectively modified near resonance, revealing a mechanism for polarization-dependent nonlinear phase control.

Metasurface-based varifocal Alvarez lens at microwave frequencies

Lenses with a tunable focus are highly desirable but remain a challenge. Here, we demonstrate a microwave varifocal meta-lens based on the Alvarez lens principle, consisting of two mechanically movable tri-layer metasurface phase plates with reversed cubic spatial profiles. The manufactured multilayer Alvarez meta-lens enables microwave beam collimation/focusing at frequencies centered at 7.5 GHz, and shows one octave focal length tunability when transversely translating the phase plates by 8 cm. The measurements reveal a gain enhancement up to 15 dB, 3-dB beam width down to 3.5 ∘ , and relatively broad 3-dB bandwidth of 3 GHz. These advantageous characteristics, along with its simplicity, compactness, and lightweightness, make the demonstrated flat Alvarez meta-lens suitable for deployment in many microwave systems.

Audio misinformation encoding via an on-phone sub-terahertz metasurface

We demonstrate a wireless security application to protect the weakest link in phone-to-phone communication, using a terahertz metasurface. To our knowledge, this is the first example of an eavesdropping countermeasure in which the attacker is actively misled.

Beam combining of high-power terahertz lasers with semiconductor metasurface gratings

Spectral beam combining (SBC) of an array of single-mode lasers has the potential for realizing a chip-scale electrically tunable multispectral laser source without any moving parts and with emission at closely spaced discrete frequencies. Here, we demonstrate SBC of an array of single-mode THz quantum-cascade lasers (QCLs) with small frequency spacing. Semiconductor-based metasurface THz blazed gratings are developed for integration with QCLs in a compact cryocooler setup. Single-lobed beams of four QCLs emitting around 3.2 THz and spectrally separated by ~14 GHz are combined to achieve collinear propagation of spatially overlapped and collimated beams in the far field with ≲ 0.1° of pointing error. Peak optical power in the range 50–100 mW is detected from each of the QCLs after combining. The dense frequency spacing in our method provides a pathway to incorporate tens of QCLs on a chip to realize a high-power discretely tunable THz laser source for applications in THz spectroscopy.

Optical filters made from random metasurfaces using Bayesian optimization

Abstract We theoretically investigate the ability to design optical filters from a single material and a single layer of randomly dispersed resonant dielectric particles, defining a random metasurface. Using a Bayesian and generalized Mie inverse-design approach, we design particle radii distributions that give rise to longpass, shortpass, bandpass, and bandstop spectral bands in the infrared. The optical response is shown to be directly related to electric and magnetic multipole scattering of the constituent particles and their near field coupling. We discuss the effect of the particle size distribution and particle–particle coupling interactions on filter design in random systems lacking long-range order.

VUV light collection enhancement with metasurface lenses

Vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) light has applications in many areas of fundamental research and technology, including high-energy physics (HEP) experiments and especially those based on scintillation of noble elements (xenon and argon). There are persistent challenges associated with the detection of the VUV photons in particle detectors, e.g. strong absorption by structural materials and low detection efficiency of the photosensors.Metasurfaces are relatively novel nano-fabricated devices which offer unprecedented control of light with a wide field of view and diffraction-limited focusing. This contribution will present the first linear metasurface lens operating in the VUV spectral range with the measured diffraction efficiencies above 50%.The design and fabrication processes will be described in detail, as well as the characterization measurements, and possible applications in the HEP experiments will be discussed.

Reflective metasurfaces for broadband terahertz linear-to-circular polarization conversion and circular dichroism spectroscopy

Metasurface polarization convertors permit conversion of an input linear polarization to right- or left-handed circular polarization based on the orientation of the input linear polarization, over a broad bandwidth and with high efficiency. The reflected circular polarizations can be used to evaluate samples for circular dichroism. A THz time-domain detection provides a time domain terahertz signal that is Fourier transformed to produce a THz circular dichroism spectrum.

Harmonic and Subharmonic RF Injection Locking of THz Metasurface Quantum-Cascade VECSEL

Harmonic and subharmonic RF injection locking is demonstrated in a terahertz (THz) quantum-cascade vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (QC-VECSEL). By tuning the RF injection frequency around integer multiples and submultiples of the cavity round-trip frequency, different harmonic and subharmonic orders can be excited in the same device. Modulation-dependent behavior of the device has been studied with recorded lasing spectral broadening and locking bandwidths in each case. In particular, harmonic injection locking results in the observation of harmonic spectra with bandwidths over 200 GHz. A semiclassical Maxwell-density matrix formalism has been applied to interpret QC-VECSEL dynamics, which aligns well with experimental observations.

Dark and bright modes, and their coherent control in dipolar metasurface bilayers

Several plasmonic nanoparticles supporting dipolar resonances can couple to form normal modes. Here, we develop an analytical model to explain the formation of nonradiative “dark” and radiative “bright” modes through radiative coupling in bilayers consisting of dipolar nanoantenna arrays that are separated by a subwavelength distance. We also include near-field contributions in our model and show that the absorption and reflectance spectra obtained from our model agree reasonably well with the respective finite-difference time-domain simulation results for both perfectly aligned and misaligned bilayers. Here, the ability to vary the reflection and absorption spectra of these bilayers by changing the material and geometrical parameters has potential applications in the design of efficient spectral filters. We also show that we can selectively excite these modes by adjusting the phase between two counterpropagating normally incident fields, which has applications in all-optical modulators and switches based on purely linear interferometric effects.

High‐Asymmetry Metasurface: A New Solution for Terahertz Resonance via Active Learning‐Augmented Diffusion Model

Terahertz (THz) metamaterials with high‐figure‐of‐merit (high‐FoM) performance resonance are essential for advancing sensors, detectors, and imagers. Conventional designs focus on symmetric or low‐asymmetry geometric structures, leaving high‐asymmetry designs largely unexplored due to the inefficiency of trial‐and‐error‐based rational design. Recent deep learning techniques offer automation and acceleration but are constrained by the need for large datasets inherent to their data‐driven nature. Here, a novel prior knowledge‐guided generative model augmented by a physics‐constrained active learning mechanism to design high‐asymmetry metamaterials. An advanced diffusion model learns features from a small set of classical structures with high‐FoM THz resonance and generates new high‐asymmetry structures. To mitigate the limited number of classical structures, the generated high‐asymmetry structures are actively selected and integrated into the initial training dataset based on their physical characteristics. Experimental results demonstrate the superior resonance performance of the generated high‐asymmetry metamaterials over classical designs, exhibiting improvements exceeding 30% in key resonance metrics. Remarkably, this performance is attained using only 68 classical structures as the initial training dataset, significantly reducing the data requirements for deep learning‐based metamaterial design. The proposed scheme for generating high‐asymmetry structures provides a new effective and efficient solution for high‐FoM resonance, expanding applications in high‐sensitivity THz metadevices.
