LANL Data Sprint 2022 - STEM Santa Fe

The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Data Sprint took place virtually on July 25-29, 2022. Our team worked with data from the STEM Santa Fe (SSF) organization (https://stemsantafe.org) whose mission can be summarized as devoted to “[creating] a world filled with analytical citizens exploring complex issues for the betterment of society”. We worked with SSF data exported from Google Forms with information on (pre/post) participant surveys and registration demographics.

LANL ASC FY23 L2 Milestone Description and Completion Criteria [Slides]

In early 2021, the ASC Program decided that Ristra should provide a production code (Moya) for LANL’s mission in the Low Energy-Density Physics application space. At the same time, Ristra should design an environment for rapid development of new codes that can answer new questions on new hardware. We started FY22 by expanding upon our R&D efforts of high-order DG methods for hydrodynamics; Technical & staffing challenges caused us to abandon this for a traditional FV SGH approach, but leveraging modern techniques. Significant changes in FleCSI (v1.4→2.x) have us writing code anew, in a co-design effort with the FleCSI and FleCSI specialization projects.

Keeping LANL at the forefront of list mode capability for safeguards and MC&A [Slides]

Neutron based detection forms key capability to enable and support international and domestic nuclear safeguards and non-proliferation missions. Key stakeholders include International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM), regional safeguards inspectorates, domestic stakeholders. LANL has been historically a leader in development of Non-destructive Assay (NDA) instruments and associated data acquisition hardware and software.

Joint LLNL, LANL, SNL, and IRSN High Multiplication Subcritical (Multiplicity) Benchmark Experiments Execution Plan (IER-518 CED-3a)

As part of the experiment design and planning, the critical experiment design team (CEDT), as well as additional stakeholders, convened a series of meetings to discuss the goals and requirements of execution for this experiment. The slides from these meetings are attached in Appendix A. The following sections summarize the outcome of those discussions and present the planned experimental configurations and measurements. The stated goals of this experiment are as follows: 1) Measure time-tagged list-mode data for configurations exceeding neutron multiplication of 100; 2) Provide intercomparison between LLNL, LANL, and IRSN detector systems and methodologies; 3) Generate experiment execution report(s) useful to a fundamental physics benchmark for the ICSBEP; 4) Leverage existing critical experiment and detector system benchmarks to limit required modeling and uncertainty analysis.

LANL Meteorological Program: 2022 Data Completeness/Quality Report

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) operates seven mesa-top instrumented meteorology towers: Technical Area (TA) 6, TA-49, TA-53, TA-54, TA-63, TA-54B, and TA-16B. An additional instrumented tower is located in Mortandad Canyon (TA-5 MDCN), and there is a rain gauge at North Community (NCOM), located within the town of Los Alamos. The 10 meter (m) towers at TA-63, TA- 54B, and TA-16B were installed in 2021, and will be included in the 2023 data completeness/quality report. A description of the meteorology monitoring network, prior to the installation of the TA-63, TA-54B, and TA-16B is found in Dewart and Boggs (2014). Four of the mesa-top towers (e.g., TA-6, TA-49, TA-53, and TA-54) are instrumented at the 1.2 m, 11.5 m, 23 m, and 46 m levels. In addition, the TA-6 tower is instrumented at the 92 m level. The TA-5 MDCN tower is 10 m in height and is instrumented at 1.2 m and 10 m. Data are collected and averaged every 15 minutes. Range checking is performed on each measurement every 15 minutes; data that are beyond normal ranges are eliminated from the data set and replaced by a code for missing data. In addition, data are reviewed weekly by qualified meteorologists to identify bad data not identified by the range checking technique. The data steward eliminates these data from the data set and replaces them with a code for missing data. The instrument technicians also review that data and schedule instrument replacement, as required. All instruments are calibrated at a frequency that meets the criteria identified in ANSI/ANS-3.11-2015. Data completeness is determined by the number of total 15-minute records available versus the number of possible measurements for the entire year. As a rule, the meteorologists do not attempt to estimate data that are eliminated as bad data. Original datalogger records, including bad data, can be recalled from program archival storage.

Joint LLNL, LANL, SNL, and IRSN High Multiplication Subcritical (Multiplicity) Benchmark Integral Experiment Execution (CED-3b Report)

This report documents the experimental configurations and measurements for IER-518: Joint LLNL, LANL, SNL, and IRSN High Multiplication Subcritical (Multiplicity) Benchmark Experiments. These measurements involved a series of subcritical configurations at the Sandia Critical Experiments (SCX) facility at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL). The purpose of these measurements was to produce time tagged neutron count data of configurations that exceed a subcritical multiplication of 20, which is the high end of the fundamental physics benchmarks currently available in the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project Handbook (ICSBEP). These measurements leverage experimental configurations 1 and detector systems 2 from previously accepted ICSBEP benchmark evaluations, allowing evaluations of these measurements to be performed at greatly reduced cost.

Environmental Air Monitoring at LANL: 2023 External Program Assessment [Slides]

Radioactive Air Emissions Management evaluates radiological impacts of LANL operations on members of the public, identifies and quantifies releases, and assesses impacts. It is not directly affiliated with cleanup operations or programmatic work and has independent oversight. The focus areas in Environmental Compliance Programs are stack emissions measurements, ambient air measurements, minor source operations evaluations, data management and quality assurance, collaboration with Meteorology program, and collaboration with Dose Assessment program (EPC-ES).
