Probing Majorana wavefunctions in Kitaev honeycomb spin liquids with second-order two-dimensional spectroscopy

Two-dimensional coherent terahertz spectroscopy (2DCS) emerges as a valuable tool to probe the nature, couplings, and lifetimes of excitations in quantum materials. It thus promises to identify unique signatures of spin liquid states in quantum magnets by directly probing properties of their exotic fractionalized excitations. Here, we calculate the second-order 2DCS of the Kitaev honeycomb model and demonstrate that distinct spin liquid fingerprints appear already in this lowest-order nonlinear response $\chi^{(2)}_{yzx}(\omega_1, \omega_2)$ when using crossed light polarizations. We further relate the off-diagonal 2DCS peaks to the localized nature of the matter Majorana excitations trapped by $\mathbb{Z}_2$ flux excitations and show that 2DCS thus directly probes the inverse participation ratio of Majorana wavefunctions. By providing experimentally observable features of spin liquid states in the 2D spectrum, our work can guide future 2DCS experiments on Kitaev magnets.

Thermalization at low temperatures via weakly damped multisite baths

We study the thermalization properties of one-dimensional open quantum systems coupled to baths at their boundary. The baths are driven to their thermal states via Lindblad operators, while the system undergoes Hamiltonian dynamics. We specifically consider multisite baths and investigate the extent to which the late-time steady state resembles a Gibbs state at some controllable temperature set by the baths. We study three models: a noninteracting fermion model accessible via free-fermion technology, and two interacting models, the XZ model and the chiral clock model, which are accessible via tensor network methods. We show that, by tuning towards the weak coupling and slow relaxation limits, one can engineer low temperatures in the bulk of the system provided the bath size is big enough. Here, we use this capability to study energy transport in the XZ model at lower temperatures than previously reported. Our work paves the way for future studies of interacting open quantum systems at low temperatures.

Spin-strain interactions under hydrostatic pressure in α-RuCl 3

We investigate the effects of hydrostatic pressure on 𝛼−RuCl 3 , a prototypical material for the Kitaev spin model on a honeycomb lattice with a possible spin-liquid ground state. Using ultrasound measurements at pressures up to 1.16 GPa, we reveal significant modifications of the acoustic properties and the 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagram of this material. Hydrostatic pressure suppresses the three-dimensional magnetic order and induces a dimerization transition at higher pressures. At low pressures, the sound attenuation exhibits a linear temperature dependence, while above 0.28 GPa, it becomes nearly temperature independent, suggesting a shift in the phonon scattering regime dominated by Majorana fermions. These findings provide new insights into spin-strain interactions in Kitaev magnets and deliver a detailed characterization of the 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagram of 𝛼−RuCl 3 under hydrostatic pressure.

Solvable theory of a strange metal at the breakdown of a heavy Fermi liquid

In this work, we introduce an effective theory for quantum critical points (QCPs) in heavy-fermion systems, involving a change in carrier density without symmetry breaking. Our theory captures a strongly coupled metallic QCP, leading to robust marginal Fermi-liquid transport phenomenology, and associated linear in temperature (T) "strange metal" resistivity, all within a controlled large-N limit. In the parameter regime of strong damping of emergent bosonic excitations, the QCP also displays a near-universal "Planckian" transport lifetime τ tr ~ℏ/(k B T). This is contrasted with the conventional so-called "slave boson" theory of the Kondo breakdown, where the large-N limit describes a weak coupling fixed point and nontrivial transport behavior may only be obtained through uncontrolled 1/N corrections. We also compute the weak-field Hall coefficient within the effective model as the system is tuned across the transition. We then find that, between the two plateaus reflecting the different carrier densities in the two Fermi-liquid phases, the Hall coefficient can develop a peak in the critical crossover regime, like in recent experimental findings, in the parameter regime of weak boson damping.

Pair Density Wave Order from Electron Repulsion

A pair density wave (PDW) is a superconductor whose order parameter is a periodic function of space, without an accompanying spatially uniform component. Since PDWs are not the outcome of a weak-coupling instability of a Fermi liquid, a generic pairing mechanism for PDW order has remained elusive. Here, we describe and solve models having robust PDW phases. To access the intermediate coupling limit, we invoke large-$N$ limits of Fermi liquids with repulsive BCS interactions that admit saddle point solutions. We show that the requirements for long-range PDW order are that the repulsive BCS couplings must be nonmonotonic in space and that their strength must exceed a threshold value. We obtain a phase diagram with both finite temperature transitions to PDW order and a $T = 0$ quantum critical point, where non-Fermi liquid behavior occurs.

Solvable 3D Kondo Lattice Exhibiting Pair Density Wave, Odd-Frequency Pairing, and Order Fractionalization

The Kondo lattice model plays a key role in our understanding of quantum materials, but a lack of small parameters has posed a long-standing problem. We present a 3 dimensional S= 1 2 Kondo lattice model describing a spin liquid within an electron sea. Strong correlations in the spin liquid are treated exactly, enabling a controlled analytical approach. Like a Peierls or BCS phase, a logarithmically divergent susceptibility leads to an instability into a new phase at arbitrarily small Kondo coupling. Our solution captures a plethora of emergent phenomena, including odd-frequency pairing, pair density wave formation and order fractionalization. The ground-state state is a pair density wave with a fractionalized charge e, S = 1/2 order parameter, formed between electrons and Majorana fermions.

Out-of-time-order correlators and Lyapunov exponents in sparse SYK

We use a combination of analytical and numerical methods to study out-of-time order correlators (OTOCs) in the sparse Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. We find that at a given order of N, the standard result for the q-local, all-to-all SYK, obtained through the sum over ladder diagrams, is corrected by a series in the sparsity parameter, k. We present an algorithm to sum the diagrams at any given order of 1/(kq) n . We also study OTOCs numerically as a function of the sparsity parameter and determine the Lyapunov exponent. We find that numerical stability when extracting the Lyapunov exponent requires averaging over a massive number of realizations. This trade-off between the efficiency of the sparse model and consistent behavior at finite N becomes more significant for larger values of N.

Traversable wormhole dynamics on a quantum processor

The holographic principle, theorized to be a property of quantum gravity, postulates that the description of a volume of space can be encoded on a lower-dimensional boundary. The anti-de Sitter (AdS)/conformal field theory correspondence or duality is the principal example of holography. The Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev (SYK) model of N >> 1 Majorana fermions has features suggesting the existence of a gravitational dual in AdS 2 , and is a new realization of holography. Here, we invoke the holographic correspondence of the SYK many-body system and gravity to probe the conjectured ER=EPR relation between entanglement and spacetime geometry through the traversable wormhole mechanism as implemented in the SYK model. A qubit can be used to probe the SYK traversable wormhole dynamics through the corresponding teleportation protocol. This can be realized as a quantum circuit, equivalent to the gravitational picture in the semiclassical limit of an infinite number of qubits. Here we use learning techniques to construct a sparsified SYK model that we experimentally realize with 164 two-qubit gates on a nine-qubit circuit and observe the corresponding traversable wormhole dynamics. Despite its approximate nature, the sparsified SYK model preserves key properties of the traversable wormhole physics: perfect size winding, coupling on either side of the wormhole that is consistent with a negative energy shockwave, a Shapiro time delay, causal time-order of signals emerging from the wormhole, and scrambling and thermalization dynamics. Our experiment was run on the Google Sycamore processor. By interrogating a two-dimensional gravity dual system, our work represents a step towards a program for studying quantum gravity in the laboratory. Future developments will require improved hardware scalability and performance as well as theoretical developments including higher-dimensional quantum gravity duals and other SYK-like models.

Pressure tuning of Kitaev spin liquid candidate Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6

The search for Kitaev’s quantum spin liquid in real materials has recently expanded with the prediction that honeycomb lattices of divalent, high-spin cobalt ions could host the dominant bond-dependent exchange interactions required to stabilize the elusive entangled quantum state. The layered honeycomb Na 3 Co 2 SbO 6 has been singled out as a leading candidate provided that the trigonal crystal field acting on Co 3d orbitals, which enhances non-Kitaev exchange interactions between $J$ eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ spin-orbital pseudospins, is reduced. Here we show that applied pressure leads to anisotropic compression of the layered structure, significantly reducing the trigonal distortion of CoO 6 octahedra. Ferromagnetic correlations between pseudospins are enhanced in the spin-polarized (3 Tesla) phase up to about 60 GPa. Higher pressures drive a high-spin to low-spin transition destroying the $J$ eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ moments required to map the spin Hamiltonian into Kitaev’s model. The spin transition strongly suppresses the low-temperature magnetic susceptibility and appears to stabilize a paramagnetic phase driven by frustration. The possible emergence of frustrated magnetism of localized $S$ = $\frac{1}{2}$ moments opens the door for exploration of novel magnetic quantum states in compressed honeycomb lattices of divalent cobaltates.

Majorana bound states with chiral magnetic textures

The aim of this Tutorial is to give a pedagogical introduction into realizations of Majorana fermions, usually termed as Majorana bound states (MBSs), in condensed matter systems with magnetic textures. We begin by considering the Kitaev chain model of “spinless” fermions and show how two “half” fermions can appear at chain ends due to interactions. By considering this model and its two-dimensional generalization, we emphasize intricate relation between topological superconductivity and possible realizations of MBS. We further discuss how “spinless” fermions can be realized in more physical systems, e.g., by employing the spin-momentum locking. Next, we demonstrate how magnetic textures can be used to induce synthetic or fictitious spin–orbit interactions, and, thus, stabilize MBS. We describe a general approach that works for arbitrary textures and apply it to skyrmions. We show how MBS can be stabilized by elongated skyrmions, certain higher order skyrmions, and chains of skyrmions. We also discuss how braiding operations can be performed with MBS stabilized on magnetic skyrmions. Furthermore, this Tutorial is aimed at students at the graduate level.

Geometric decoherence time in Lindbladian dynamics

The onset of decoherence in open many-body systems lacks a dynamical timescale grounded in the loss of bipartite entanglement. Here, we introduce the geometric decoherence time, defined as the earliest moment the monotone relation between logarithmic negativity and Rényi-$\frac{1}{2}$ entropy—exactly equal across any bipartition for pure states—breaks down under open-system evolution, signaling entropy growth without accompanying entanglement growth. We establish this criterion in both single-particle Gaussian dynamics and many-body Lindbladian evolution. We show that quantum mutual information provides a complementary long-time diagnostic: Its asymptotic vanishing is equivalent to factorization of the steady state across the bipartition, a condition strictly stronger than separability, and whenever a product steady state is approached exponentially in trace norm, negativity and mutual information share the same decay rate. In the presence of a strong symmetry, this tracking can fail—residual classical correlations can survive after entanglement has vanished. In the Kitaev chain with balanced gain and loss, we derive a closed-form solution and show that the topological phase sustains longer coherence times than the trivial phase at identical dissipation, with a local minimum at the chiral-symmetric point. In the interacting XXZ chain, exact many-body evolution shows that local 𝑍 dephasing preserves residual classical correlations, whereas gain and loss restore the mutual-information tracking of negativity. Furthermore, our results establish the geometric decoherence time as a dynamical scale tracking the onset of decoherence.

Determining topological order from infinite projected entangled pair states

In this work, we present a method of extracting information about the topological order from the ground state of a strongly correlated two-dimensional system computed with the infinite projected entangled pair state (iPEPS). For topologically ordered systems, the iPEPS wrapped on a torus becomes a superposition of degenerate, locally indistinguishable ground states. Projectors in the form of infinite matrix product operators onto states with well-defined anyon flux are used to compute topological S and T matrices (encoding mutual and self-statistics of emergent anyons). The algorithm is shown to be robust against a perturbation driving string-net toric code across a phase transition to a ferromagnetic phase. Our approach provides accurate results near quantum phase transition, where the correlation length is prohibitively large for other numerical methods. Moreover, we used numerically optimized iPEPS describing the ground state of the Kitaev honeycomb model in the toric code phase and obtained topological data in excellent agreement with theoretical prediction.

Thermoelectric power of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev islands: Probing Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in quantum matter experiments

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model describes electrons with random and all-to-all interactions and realizes a many-body state without quasiparticle excitations and a nonvanishing extensive entropy $S_0$ in the zero-temperature limit. Its low-energy theory coincides with the low-energy theory of near-extremal charged black holes with Bekenstein-Hawking entropy $S_0$. Several mesoscopic experimental configurations realizing SYK quantum dynamics over a significant intermediate temperature scale have been proposed. We investigate quantum thermoelectric transport in such configurations and describe low-temperature crossovers out of SYK criticality into regimes either with Fermi liquid behavior, with a Coulomb blockade, or criticality associated with Schwarzian quantum gravity fluctuations. In this work, our results show that thermopower measurements can serve as a direct probe for $S_0$.

Field-induced transitions in the Kitaev material α - RuCl 3 probed by thermal expansion and magnetostriction

High-resolution thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements were performed on single crystals of α - RuCl 3 in magnetic fields applied parallel to the Ru-Ru bonds. The length changes were measured in the direction perpendicular to the honeycomb planes. Here, our data show clear thermodynamic characteristics for the field-induced phase transition at the critical field μ 0 H c 1 = 7.8 ( 2 ) T where the antiferromagnetic zigzag order is suppressed. At higher fields, a kink in the magnetostriction coefficient signals an additional transition or crossover around μ 0 H c 2 ≈ 11 T . The extracted Grüneisen ratio shows typical hallmarks for quantum criticality near H c 1 but also displays anomalous behavior above H c 1 . We compare our experimental data with spin-wave calculations employing a minimal Kitaev-Heisenberg model in the semiclassical limit. Most of the salient features are in agreement with each other, however, the peculiar features in the region above H c 1 cannot be accounted for in our semiclassical modeling and hence suggest a genuine quantum nature. We construct a phase diagram for α - RuCl 3 in a magnetic field along the Ru-Ru bonds, displaying a zigzag ordered state below H c 1 , a quantum paramagnetic regime between H c 1 and H c 2 , and a semiclassical partially polarized state above H c 2 .

Ground state in proximity to a possible Kitaev spin liquid: The undistorted honeycomb iridate Na x IrO 3 (0.60 ≤ x ≤ 0.80)

Here, we report the results of our study of a recently synthesized honeycomb iridate Na x IrO 3 (0.60 ≤ x ≤ 0.80). Single-crystal Na x IrO 3 adopts a honeycomb lattice noticeably without distortions and stacking disorder inherently existent in its sister compound Na 2 IrO 3 . The oxidation state of the Ir ion is a mixed valence state resulting from a majority Ir 5+ (5d 4 ) ion and a minority Ir 6+ (5d 3 ) ion. Na x IrO 3 is a Mott insulator likely with a predominant pseudospin =1 state. It exhibits an effective moment of 1.1 μB/Ir and a Curie-Weiss temperature of –19 K but with no discernible long-range order above 1 K. The physical behavior below 1 K features two prominent anomalies at T h = 0.9 K and T l = 0.12 K in both the heat capacity and AC magnetic susceptibility. Intermediate between T h and T l lies a pronounced temperature linearity of the heat capacity with a large slope of 77 mJ /mole K 2 , a feature expected for highly correlated metals but not at all for insulators. These results along with a comparison drawn with the honeycomb lattices Na 2 IrO 3 and (Na 0.2 Li 0.8 ) 2 IrO 3 point to an exotic ground state in proximity to a possible Kitaev spin liquid.

Footprints of Kitaev spin liquid in the Fano lineshape of Raman-active optical phonons

We develop a theoretical description of the Raman spectroscopy in the spin-phonon-coupled Kitaev system and show that it can provide observable signatures of fractionalized excitations characteristic of the underlying spin-liquid phase. In particular, we obtain the explicit form of the phonon modes and construct the coupling Hamiltonian based on the D 3d symmetry. We then systematically compute the Raman intensity and show that the spin-phonon coupling renormalizes phonon propagators and generates the salient Fano lineshape. We find that the temperature evolution of the Fano lineshape displays two crossovers, and the low-temperature crossover shows pronounced magnetic-field dependence. We thus identify the observable effect of the Majorana fermions and the Z2 gauge fluxes encoded in the Fano lineshape. Our results are consistent with the phonon Raman scattering experiments in the candidate material α-RuCl 3 .

Signatures of non-Loudon-Fleury Raman scattering in the Kitaev magnet 𝛽−Li 2 ⁢IrO 3

We investigate the magnetic excitations of the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet 𝛽−Li 2 ⁢IrO 3 by means of inelastic Raman scattering. The spectra exhibit the coexistence of a broad scattering continuum and two sharp low-energy peaks at 2.5 and 3 meV, with a distinctive polarization dependence. While the continuum is suggestive of fractional quasiparticles emerging from a proximate quantum spin liquid phase, the sharp peaks provide the first experimental signature of the “non-Loudon- Fleury” one-magnon scattering processes proposed recently. The corresponding microscopic mechanism is similar to the one leading to the symmetric off-diagonal exchange interaction Γ (because it involves a combination of both direct and ligand-mediated exchange paths) but is otherwise completely unexpected within the traditional Loudon-Fleury theory of Raman scattering. Furthermore, the present experimental verification therefore calls for a drastic reevaluation of Raman scattering in similar systems with strong spin-orbit coupling and multiple exchange paths.
