Multiple spacecraft observations of interplanetary shocks ISEE three-dimensional plasma measurements

ISEE 1 and ISEE 3 three-dimensional solar wind plasma measurements are used together with magnetic field measurements across five previously studied interplanetary shocks to test the accuracy of the mixed-mode shock-normal determination technique and to test whether the shock properties are best approximated with a ratio of specific heats of 5/3 or 2. In the shocks examined, the assumption that the velocity jump was along the normal provided an estimate of the shock normal within 15 deg of the best fit normal 50 percent of the time and within 50 deg, 90 percent of the time. The mixed-mode normals lay within 12 deg of the best fit normal 50 percent of the time and within 36 deg, 90 percent of the time. Part of this deviation may be due to differences in the orientation of the local normal from that of the average normal. Finally, the jump in plasma and field across the shock is better predicted from the Rankine-Hugoniot equations using a ratio of specific heats of 5/3 rather than 2.

Anisotropies and flows of suprathermal particles in the distant magnetotail - ISEE 3 observations

The ISEE-3 spacecraft has been transferred in 1982 into an earth orbit which brings the satellite close to the tailward Lagrangian point L2 at about 220 R(E) and thus allows exploration of the distant geomagnetic tail. An initial analysis of energetic proton measurements greater than 30 keV from the Max-Planck-Institut/University of Maryland sensor system on ISEE-3 is reported. It has been found that suprathermal protons are a persistent feature of the distant tail. Differential intensitites at 30 keV are essentially constant between the lunar distance and 220 R(E) and about one order of magnitude smaller than in the near earth, or greater than about 20 R(E), plasma sheet. Assuming that these protons are convected with the local plasma flow, it is possible to derive plasma velocities. During time periods where a comparison is possible, these velocities compare favourably well with the velocities derived from the Los Alamos National Laboratory plasma analyzer on board the same spacecraft. The appearance of the plasma sheet, as evidenced by the suprathermal particles, is rather bursty. Anisotropies are large, and predominantly tailward.

Energetic ion regimes in the deep geomagnetic tail - ISEE-3

Bame et al. (1983) have given plasma measurements for two 12-hour intervals and have identified the plasma regions observed during the January 1-March 30, 1983 traversal by the ISEE-3 spacecraft of a previously unexplored part of the distant geomagnetic tail. Attention is presently given to the 35 keV-1.6 MeV energetic ion and magnetic field measurements made by ISEE-3, relating them to the plasma measurements. The plasma sheet is found to be a region of energetic ion enhanced fluxes, with unidirectionally tailored flow. A characterization accounting for these characteristics involves occurrence of reconnection at a neutral line that lies earthward of the spacecraft.

Large scale temporal and radial gradients in the IMF - Helios 1, 2, ISEE-3, and Pioneer 10, 11

Recent investigations using measurements at 1 AU have discovered three types of long term variation in the interplanetary magnetic field: solar minimum decreases, solar maximum enhancements, and small decreases around solar reversal. In this study the 1972-1982 Helios 1, 2, ISEE-3, and Pioneer 10, 11 observations between 0.3 and 12 AU are examined to further investigate these changes. It was found that all three IMF solar cycle effects are also present in the Helios and Pioneer measurements, confirming that these variations occur throughout the low latitude heliosphere. In addition, the comparison of measurements by identical magnetometers on ISEE-3, Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 has revealed a more rapid decrease in IMF intensity than predicted by classical Parker theory. Causes and ramifications of both the long term variations and steeper-than-expected radial gradients in the interplanetary magnetic field are discussed.

Hot plasma composition results from the ISEE-1 spacecraft

The International Sun Earth Explorer (ISEE-1) was launched on Oct. 22, 1977 into a geocentric elliptical orbit. The energetic ion mass spectrometer on the satellite is employed in a study of the plasmas encountered by ISEE-1 in its orbits. The experiment is operating successfully and research is progressing in a number of areas. A review in the nature of a progress report on the energetic magnetospheric plasma results is provided. Attention is given to the plasma sheet and ion streams in the magnetotail, the inner magnetosphere, and magnetospheric boundary regions.

Substorm associated traveling compression regions in the distant tail - ISEE-3 geotail observations

While in the lobes of the distant magnetotail, ISEE-3 encountered regions of compressed magnetic field at a rate of several per day. The duration of these events was 5 to 20 minutes and they were observed 10 to 30 minutes following the onset of substorm activity near the earth. During each event, the lobe magnetic field tilted first northward and then southward with the inflection point near the time of peak field strength. Following the compression events, the lobe field weakened and retained a southward component for 20 to 40 minutes. It is suggested that these traveling compression regions are the lobe signatures of plasmoids moving rapidly down the tail in the plasma sheet. Comparison of ISEE-3 compression event times with substorm onset times yielded propagation speeds of 350 to 750 km/s.

Anomalously high potentials observed on ISEE

Data from two electric field experiments and from the plasma composition experiment on ISEE-1 are used to show that the spacecraft charged to close to -70 V in sunlight at 0700 UT on March 17, 1978. Data from the electron spectrometer experiment show that there was a potential barrier of -10 to -20 V about the spacecraft during this event. The potential barrier was effective in turning back emitted photoelectrons to the spacecraft. The stringent electrostatic cleanliness specifications imposed on ISEE make the presence of differential charging unlikely. Modeling of this event is required to determine if the barrier was produced by the presence of space charge.

Some contributions to knowledge of the magnetospheric plasma by ISEE-1 investigators

The ability to control the separation between ISEE-1 and 2 permitted study of the motion and structure of the bow shock and magnetopause, the boundary layers, and the plasma sheet. Evidence favoring the existence of reconnection and its relevance to the transfer of magnetic flux from the frontside to the rear of the magnetosphere, was obtained. The presence of reflected and accelerated particles is shown to lead to the development of a foreshock region between the bow shock and the interplanetary magnetic field line tangential to it. Precursors to interplanetary shocks are also observed. Inside the magnetosphere, ISEE contributed to knowledge of plasma waves, and, augmenting work with GEOS, to studies of plasma composition. In the near tail, the boundary layer of the plasma sheet disclosed interesting phenomena.

Magnetic field observations at the dayside magnetopause: ISEE-1 and -2 contributions during the IMS

Dayside magnetopause macroscopic characteristics such as velocities and thicknesses of the boundary and internal magnetic field structure of the current layer were studied by ISEE-1 and 2. The ISEE results suggest that the magnetopause is much thicker than previously thought. A current sheet thicker than several proton gyroradii rules out classical kinetic theories of a magnetopause current layer of the order of the ion gyroradius. Such a thick boundary may explain the failure of theories which predict a unique polarization for the field rotation inside the current sheet.

Detailed examination of a plasmoid in the distant magnetotail with ISEE 3

Details of an investigation of a lone plasmoid encountered by the ISEE-3 spacecraft in February 1983 are reported. ISEE-3 was then at 217 earth radii distance, in the magnetosheath, and had entered the magnetotail. Intense energetic particle, plasma and magnetic field fluctuations were detected, indicating a large electron flux moving tailward, a suprathermal proton flux, a jump in electron temperature, and inverse signatures of an increasing magnetic field. Closed magnetic field lines were also detected as were IMF field lines around the plasmoid and open field lines connecting the earth with space. The hot particles in the plasmoid are concluded to have been magnetically confined in a boundary one earth radius thick. An earthward directed beam was also detected and was found to balance the tailward flux. The origin and characteristics of the beam were not discerned.

Evolution of the earth's distant magnetotail - ISEE 3 electron plasma results

ISEE 3 data form the basis for a study of the evolution of the electron plasma in the magnetotail lobe and plasma sheet regions as a function of radial distance from the earth. The data were plasma electron and magnetometer measurements taken when the ISEE 3 was tailward of the earth during three different orbits. About 91,000 electron spectra were obtained in terms of the magnetosheath, lobe, plasma sheet and radial downstream distances. The lobe density peaked at 60 earth radii, while the sheet density tapered very slowly downstream. At large downstream distances (about 180 radii), the plasma bulk flow velocity increased significantly, surpassing the solar wind velocity. The bimodal electron flow angle near the earth became a single tailward flow at 180 radii.

ISEE 3 magnetic field observations in the magnetotail Implications for reconnection

Early results are presented from an analysis of magnetometer measurements made during the first two tail passes of ISEE-3. ISEE-3 explored the magnetotail to a distance of 220 earth radii during its first two tail orbits. The field strength in the lobes and the Bz component in the plasma sheet decreased systematically with distance. The frequency of occurrence of negative Bz increased with distance. The observations suggest the existence of an x-type neutral line located on average near 200 earth radii. In addition to the systematic variations with distance, three types of transient events were recorded. The first (encountered on more than 30 occasions) is a discrete magnetic structure which Hones has identified as tailward moving plasmoids produced by reconnection within the tail. The second type of event seems to be a peripheral encounter with the plasmoids making up the first type. The third type, unlike the y-aligned plasmoids, have x-aligned axes; they have the characteristics of magnetic flux ropes lying parallel to the tail.

The ISEE-3 ULEWAT: Flux tape description and heavy ion fluxes 1978-1984

The ISEE ULEWAT FLUX tapes contain ULEWAT and ISEE pool tape data summarized over relatively long time intervals (1hr) in order to compact the data set into an easily usable size. (Roughly 3 years of data fit onto one 1600 BPI 9-track magnetic tape). In making the tapes, corrections were made to the ULEWAT basic data tapes in order to, remove rate spikes and account for changes in instrument response so that to a large extent instrument fluxes can be calculated easily from the FLUX tapes without further consideration of instrument performance.

An ISEE 3 study of average and substorm conditions in the distant magnetotail

Both average and substorm conditions in the distant magnetotail were investigated using ISEE 3 magnetic field and plasma observations. The diameter of the tail, the strength of the lobe magnetic fields, and their dependence on downstream distance were all found to agree well with the flaring tail models of magnetopause geometry and pressure balance. The gradual filling of the lobes by mantle plasma reported in previous ISEE 3 studies were further investigated, and the results were found to be in qualitative agreement with leaky magnetopause model of Pilipp and Morfill (1978). The variations of plasma parameters with X + or -Y, and AE in the plasma sheet were examined. At all distances, the greatest tailward flow speeds were found to be directly proportional to the embedded southward B(z). THe magnitudes of tailward V(x) and southward B(z) are directly proportional to the level of substorm activity near the earth as measured by the AE index.

Energetic neutral atoms (E approximately 50 keV) from the ring current - IMP 7/8 and ISEE 1

Energetic neutral atoms (ENA), emitted from the magnetosphere with energies of about 50 keV, have been measured with solid state detectors on the IMP 7/8 and ISEE 1 spacecraft; they are produced when singly charged trapped ions collide with the exosphere neutral hydrogen geocorona and the energetic ions are neutralized by charge exchange. ENA observations during the recovery phase of two moderate geomagnetic storms are analyzed: November 22-23, 1973, from IMP 8 at 33 earth radii and December 17, 1977, from ISEE 1 at 20 earth radii.

The near-earth cross-tail current sheet - Detailed ISEE 1 and 2 case studies

Three near geomagnetic tail current sheet crossings of the ISEE 1 and 2 satellites, on April 5, 1979, are examined in detail. All are assoicated with the passage of an interplanetary shock and the region of variable solar wind pressure behind it. The general geometry of field reversing current sheets is discussed, and this geometry is examined for the cases studied, by using the ISEE 1 and 2 coorbiting satellite data sets. A new technique is employed which removes the effects of a variable sheet normal velocity for the first time. This allows us to calculate firm upper bounds on the current sheet thicknesses, and by utilizing certain physically motivated assumptions, determine the most probable actual sheet thicknesses, and inclinations of the field lines within these sheets. Current density profiles derived with this technique show the main cross-tail current sheet to be a structure that is many thermal ion-gyroradii thick and which is sometimes imbedded in a region that is three or more times thicker and contains much smaller current densities. These profiles also exhibit a considerable amount of fine structure in the sheet which appears as narrow peaks in the current density distributions. Possible explanations for these structures, and for the overall sheet structure itself, are examined.

High spacecraft potentials on ISEE-1 in sunlight

Data from two electric field experiments and from the plasma composition experiment on ISEE-1 show that the spacecraft charged to close to -70 V in sunlight at about 0700 UT on March 17, 1978. Data from the electron spectrometer experiment show that there was a potential barrier of some -10 to -20 V about the spacecraft during this event. The potential barrier was effective in turning back emitted photoelectrons to the spacecraft. Potential barriers can be formed by differential charging on the spacecraft or by the presence of space charge. The stringent electrostatic cleanliness specifications imposed on ISEE made the presence of differential charging seem unlikely, if these precautions were effective. Modeling of the event to determine if the barrier was produced by the presence of space charge suggested that this could not explain the observed barrier. The angular shape of the distribution could be successfully modeled as a product of differential charging on the solar arrays. This implies that the conductive coating was not completely effective in preventing differential charging, and that differential charging did occur.

Neutral sheet crossings by ISEE-3 in the distant magnetotail

The magnetic field data from ISEE-3 in the distant magnetotail at crossings of the field reversal (or neutral sheet) region are analyzed to determine the instantaneous direction of the normal component B(z) at the crossing. Crossings in the middle of the aberrated magnetotail near the apogee A2 of the first deep-tail orbit of ISEE-3 in January-February, 1983 were selected. Data for an interval of one hour is discussed at length to illustrate some of the difficulties that can occur. One particular smooth crossing at 15:56 UT, February 4, 1983, shows that complicated microstructure can occur in times shorter than one minute; averaging over long times may eliminate essential information for this purpose. By inspecting the magnetic field data at the highest resolution, however, it is shown that the direction of the plasma sheet flows and the sense of B(z) across the neutral sheet do not always agree with the reconnection models. Rather, they indicate that the low latitude boundary layer may play a significant role in the dynamics of the magnetotail.
