Aerogel-derived nickel-iron oxide catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline media

Anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs) can generate hydrogen with a pure water feed using noble metal-free catalysts. Here, the development of highly active and stable catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is required for improving performance of AEMWEs systems. Ni-Fe (oxy)hydroxides show high OER catalytic activity in alkaline media, but typically have low surface area. In this work, we investigate a series of Ni-Fe oxides with high surface area and disordered morphology, obtained using an aerogel synthesis method. We evaluate the impact of different synthesis variables on the OER activity and demonstrate that heat treatment at high temperatures generates more ordered structure, resulting in a decrease in OER activity. Advanced characterization reveals that maintaining highly disordered and porous structure of the aerogel is essential to achieving high OER activity, as it enables the formation of highly OER-active lamellar structures of the catalyst.

Surface Gibbs free energy analyses of Sr segregation in lanthanum strontium iron oxide

Sr surface segregation in mixed-cation oxides often causes degradation of chemical or electrochemical performance. In this work, the thermodynamic driving force for Sr segregation is investigated to explain the Sr segregation behavior in La0.5Sr0.5FeO3 (LSF). Specifically, Density Functional Theory is used to calculate the surface Gibbs free energy of various surface terminations of cubic (100) LSF as a function of chemical potential and temperature. Here, SrO-terminated surfaces are predicted to be dominant, promoting Sr segregation at high temperatures and low oxygen partial pressure.

Resolving atomic transport through iron oxide under irradiation using isotopic tracers

Structural materials in nuclear environments are exposed to complex and harsh conditions, including high temperatures, corrosive solutions, and irradiation. Material stability and likewise degradation are fundamentally controlled by atomic transport mechanisms. Here, we investigate the influence of radiation-induced, non-equilibrium point defect populations on mass transport within model oxide systems using isotopic tracers and atom probe tomography. An isotopically labelled hematite (a-Fe2O3) film was synthesized with 16O- and 18O-rich layers (>30nm and 10 nm, respectively) sequentially deposited via molecular beam epitaxy. One region of the film was proton irradiated to ~0.1 dpa at 450°C, and regions outside the beam spot provided a non-irradiated control of thermal annealing only. 3D APT was used to directly visualize the elemental and O-isotopic redistribution following both thermal and combined thermal and irradiation conditions. Complementary scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) was also employed to study the microstructural evolution. Error function fits of the 18O-concentration profiles enabled quantification of diffusion coefficients.

Revealing Structural Evolution of Nickel Phosphide-Iron Oxide Core–Shell Nanocatalysts in Alkaline Medium for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Metal phosphide-containing materials have emerged as a potential candidate of non-precious metal-based catalysts for alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER). While it is known that metal phosphide undergoes structural evolution, considerable debate persists regarding the effects of dynamics on the surface activation and morphological stability of the catalysts. In this study, we synthesize NiP x -FeO x core-shell nanocatalysts with an amorphous NiP x core designed for enhanced OER activity. Using ex-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we elucidate the local structural changes as a function of cyclic voltammetry cycles. Our studies suggest that the presence of corner-sharing octahedra in the FeO x shell improves structural rigidity through interlayer cross-linking, thereby inhibiting the diffusion of OH - /H 2 O. Thus, the FeO x shell preserves the amorphous NiP x core from rapid oxidation to Ni 3 (PO 4 ) 2 and Ni(OH) 2 . On the other hand, the incorporation of Ni from the core into the FeO x shell facilitates absorption of hydroxide ions for OER. As a result, the Ni/Fe(OH) x at the surface oxidizes to the active γ-(oxy)hydroxide phase under the applied potentials, promoting OER. This intriguing synergistic behavior holds significance as such synthetic route involving the FeO x shell can be extended to other systems, enabling manipulation of surface adsorption and diffusion of hydroxide ions. These findings also demonstrate that nanomaterials with core-shell morphology can be tuned to leverage the strength of each metallic component for improved electrochemical activities.

Selective Removal of Perfluorobutyric Acid Using an Electroactive Ion Exchanger Based on Polypyrrole@Iron Oxide on Carbon Cloth

Perfluorabutyric acid (PFBA) is one classify of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), which is applied to wide-spread industry compounds. The removal of PFBA has attracted considerable scientific interest in recent decades because it caused environmental pollutions and human diseases. For removing PFASs from wastewater, the adsorption method has been commonly used for the remediation of PFASs. However, it is usually limited by the inevitable “secondary waster” produced in this treatment process. In this work, PFBA can be removed effectively by synergizing the electrically switched ion exchange (ESIX) and a novel nanostructured ion exchanger. Herein, the nanostructured ion exchanger is designed by coating polypyrrole (PPy) @ Fe 2 O 3 nanoneedle on carbon cloth (PPy@Fe 2 O 3 NN-CC). Overall, results show that PPy@Fe 2 O 3 NN-CC film enhances ion exchange speed and efficiency, which endures its high-capacity adsorption ability and rapid regeneration property, thereby reducing secondary waste. Moreover, ESIX based on PPy@Fe 2 O 3 NN-CC has high selectivity for adsorption of PFBA over Cl - , SO 4 2- and NO 3 - .
