On the Stability of Power Transmission Systems Under Persistent Inverter Attacks: A Bi-Linear Matrix Approach

We investigate the stability and robustness properties of a power transmission system under persistent deceiving attacks on inverter-interfaced energy resources. The attacks can corrupt the damping coefficients in the inverters' controllers and measurements of the frequency at the points of coupling. Leveraging tools from hybrid dynamical systems theory, we characterize a broad family of persistent (and not necessarily periodic) attacks acting on the inverters, under which the stability properties of the transmission system can be shown to not be compromised. To address potentially conservative conditions identified through conventional bounding techniques, sufficient conditions on the average activation time of the attacks are identified via Lyapunov theory, as well as the formulation and solution of a class of bilinear matrix inequalities (BMI). The results are obtained for constant and slowly time-varying loads via input-to-state stability (ISS) tools. Numerical simulations on the IEEE 39-bus test system are also presented.

Electromagnetic Transient Simulation of Photovoltaic Inverter Using Implicit-Explicit Solver

This paper introduces the implementation of electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations of a photovoltaic (PV) inverter module using the Implicit-Explicit (ImEx) solver in the Suite of Nonlinear and Differential/Algebraic Equation Solvers (SUNDIALS). This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the ImEx solver in overcoming the challenges inherent in simulating the complex dynamics of PV inverter modules. Furthermore, using SUNDIALS’ ImEx solver module ARKODE for EMT simulation automates key aspects of the process, such as numerical integration, providing substantial benefits including enhanced consistency, faster implementation, reduced human error, and the capability to handle the complexities of advanced numerical integration. By conducting comparative simulations with an implicit method used in commercial software, the research showcases the ImEx solver’s capability in achieving high accuracy and reliability. Results indicate that leveraging the ImEx approach significantly enhances modeling fidelity and reduces simulation setup times, offering a promising tool for the EMT analysis of PV inverter systems in power electronics-dominated power grids.

A Two-Stage Approach for PV Inverter Engagement in Power Factor Correction and Voltage Regulation

The rapid integration of distributed energy resources, like solar photovoltaics (PVs), can lead to overvolt-age challenges due to reverse power flow and a noticeable decrease in power factor at the substation interface. While existing literature extensively explores utilizing smart inverter capabilities for reactive power flexibility using a volt-var curve (VVC), obtaining time-varying operating points of such curves in real-time is challenging due to computational demands and communication requirements. Similarly, employing optimization-based approaches for reactive power control and active voltage regulation in large-scale distribution feeders is difficult due to the complexity of the problem and the challenges in effectively engaging customer-owned resources. This paper proposes a two-stage strategy to harness smart inverters for reactive power support. The first stage formulates short-term planning by optimally designing VVCs (on a daily or hourly basis) for large-scale solar PVs based on projected system needs and communicating optimal curves to smart inverters in advance. Subsequently, the second stage employs a transactive-based method to involve customer-owned PVs for reactive power support, effectively enhancing overall system performance and addressing real-time demands. In conclusion, the efficacy of this approach will be demonstrated using real-world distribution circuits provided by Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO) and Vermont Electric Cooperative (VEC).

Impact of Inverter-Based Resources on Grid Protection: A Review of Negative-Sequence Current Generation

The increasing integration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) in power grids poses challenges to traditional protection systems, primarily due to their different fault current signatures compared to conventional synchronous generators. Unlike synchronous generators whose fault response is dictated by their physical design, IBRs exhibit a wide range of fault characteristics due to manufacturer-specific control algorithms and settings. This dependence on proprietary control schemes makes modeling IBR behavior during faults significantly more complex, especially considering the rapid evolution of inverter technology and the diverse control strategies employed. While much research has focused on the positive-sequence current injections of IBRs during symmetrical faults, the understanding of negative-sequence current generation during non-symmetrical faults remains limited. This report provides an overview of current research on IBRs' negative-sequence current generation during unbalanced faults and its impact on protection schemes based on negative-sequence components. It covers both type III wind turbines and full-size converter-based IBRs. Additionally, this report reviews strategies for grid-forming controlled inverters to generate negative-sequence current during unbalanced faults, in addition to grid-following controlled ones.

Non-invertible Symmetries and their Applications (Final Report)

Symmetries have long been a staple of theoretical physics. Recent developments have led to extensions of the notion of symmetry to so-called generalized symmetries, a particularly interesting class of which are non-invertible symmetries. Whereas traditional symmetries form a group—a mathematical structure capturing the intuition that the composition of two symmetry transformations is another symmetry transformation, and that every symmetry transformation can be undone by an inverse transformation—non-invertible symmetries have the interesting property that they do not form a group. The current award was used to pursue the study of non-invertible symmetries, focusing on both their mathematical framework and physical applications.

A Comprehensive Study of the Impact of Inverter-Based Resource (IBR) Modeling and Control on Protection Relay Elements

Inverter-based resources (IBRs) exhibit fault responses that differ significantly from those of synchronous generators, which can challenge the reliable operation of many commonly used power system protection elements. The fault response of IBRs is primarily influenced by their control algorithms and configurations, but the impact of these controls on protection relays is not yet fully understood. This presentation provides a comprehensive study of how IBR modeling and controls affect transmission line protection. Key modeling and control aspects include the DC source, inverter model, power level control, current control, and current limiting. The study reveals that certain aspects - such as the type of DC source (battery, PV, or hybrid), inverter model (average vs. switching), and power level control methods (PQ dispatch vs. Vdc-Vac control for grid-following IBRs, and droop vs. VSM for grid-forming IBRs) - do not significantly affect relay response. However, faster control loops, such as current control and current limiting, do influence the relay behavior. Additionally, the study explores the effects of other factors, including momentary cessation, operating points, fast/slow current responses, and grid strength on relay performance. Finally, the study offers recommendations for both IBR and protection engineers to improve IBR fault response and enhance the reliability of protection systems.

Apollo 14 inverted pigeonites - Possible samples of lunar plutonic rocks.

Analysis of 'inverted pigeonites' found in Apollo 14 samples 14082 and 14083 (a polymict breccia, the 'white rock') by a combination of optical, electron probe, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. These 'inverted pigeonites' are regarded as samples of plutonic rocks that have been blasted out of the Imbrium Basin. It is also concluded that lunar pigeonites will invert to orthopyroxenes, given sufficiently slow cooling histories even in very anhydrous environments.

A study of the effects of vertical resolution and measurement errors on an iteratively inverted temperature profile

A direct inversion method for inverting the temperature profile from satellite-measured radiation is discussed. The nth power of the weighting function in the integral radiative-transfer equation is used as the weight in the averaging process. The vertical resolution of the inverted temperature profile and the response of the inverted temperature profile to the measurement errors are examined in terms of n. It is found that for smaller values of n, the vertical resolution and the effect of measurement errors are reduced. When n = 0, both the vertical resolution and error effect are minimum. The temperature profile is adjusted by a constant; any structure different from the initial shape cannot be resolved. This is equivalent to the case where the entire atmosphere is treated as one layer with a fixed shape of temperature profile. When n approaches infinity, both the vertical resolution and error effect are maximum. This is equivalent to the case where the entire atmosphere is divided into m (the number of spectral channels) layers. Within each layer, the temperatures are adjusted by a constant, and any structure different from the initial shape cannot be resolved. Also, the shape of the final solution is closer to the initial profile if the value of n is smaller.
