This report presents the work completed under the DOE iM4 project for the development of a methane emission monitoring system for detection, location, and quantification of methane in oil and gas industries. The task was divided into four main areas including: 1) Sensors and Input, 2) Centralized Cloud Information Center, 3) Algorithms, and 4) Testing and Validation. Task 1 focused on researching and developing an understanding of the current, or soon to be, available methane sensing technologies. Task 2 consisted of developing the architecture, selecting hardware, software and elements for the methane monitoring system. Task 3 focused on the algorithms used for the complex inverse model of going from measured methane signatures to the detection, localization, and quantification of sources that are desired. Finally, Task 4 focused on the methods of testing and validating the operation of the system. Attention was also given to the development method and cost breakdown of the system.

Introduction to the mission and research of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the Joint Institute for Strategic Energy Analysis (JISEA). JISEA is co-sponsored by industries, governments, and partnered with several academic institutions (see https://www.jisea.org). Presentation will review statistics about the growth of renewable energy and also discuss potential future trends. It will review several specific case studies relevant to the oil and gas industry, including renewable energy for industrial operations and clean technologies and fuels that would be most relevant to oil and gas technologies and capabilities.

Systems and methods are provided for generating faults and analyzing fault propagation and its effects. Starting from the ontologies of components, functions, flows, and faults, systems and methods are provided that describe, generate and track faults in a computer system across multiple domains throughout design and/or development. In order to construct the system and fault models, a series of concepts is introduced in the form of ontologies and their dependencies. An investigation is performed into the faults, including their type, cause, life-cycle aspects, and effect. Principles and rules are created to generate various faults based on system configurations. After the modeling process, a simulation engine is described to execute actions and simulate the process of fault generation and propagation. As a result, fault paths that impact components and functions can be obtained.
