BROOD: Bilevel and Robust Optimization and Outlier Detection for Efficient Tuning of High-Energy Physics Event Generators

The parameters in Monte Carlo (MC) event generators are tuned on experimental measurements by evaluating the goodness of fit between the data and the MC predictions. The relative importance of each measurement is adjusted manually in an often time-consuming, iterative process to meet different experimental needs. In this work, we introduce several optimization formulations and algorithms with new decision criteria for streamlining and automating this process. These algorithms are designed for two formulations: bilevel optimization and robust optimization. Both formulations are applied to the datasets used in the ATLAS A14 tune and to the dedicated hadronization datasets generated by the SHERPA generator, respectively. The corresponding tuned generator parameters are compared using three metrics. We compare the quality of our automatic tunes to the published ATLAS A14 tune. Moreover, we analyze the impact of a pre-processing step that excludes data that cannot be described by the physics models used in the MC event generators.

Exascale Algorithms and Software for Lattice Field Theory in High Energy Physics: Searching Beyond the Standard Model

The Boston University component has focused on the algorithmic development of new Multigrid solver for the critical kernel for the Dirac propagators that dominated the both simulation require for lattice ensemble and the analysis of physical correlation functions. Progress on this has meet the above objects, even exceeding them a bit. The result is the beginning if multiscale lattice QCD applicable to future Exascale hardware and the development of the QUDA software for NVIDIA GPUs to give near optimal performance. As we approach exascale hardware and computation at that scale this provides the infrastructure for further advances.

Secondary Emission Detector Modules for High Energy Physics Experiments

The objectives of this Phase I SBIR project and the corresponding work plan consisted of detector geometry simulations and functional studies of pre-prototypes for both venetian-blind type and MEMS type. Modifications and improvements to the vacuum test station and data acquisition were also made throughout the project. In the final stages of this Phase I, we were able to do initial testing of devices built and we provide in this report the results of these measurements and all corresponding conclusions.

Closeout Report for: Experimental High Energy Physics at the University of South Alabama: Mu2e

The researcher worked on the Fermilab Mu2e Experiment. This experiment is in the construction phase. This experiment will look at a large number of stopped muon decays to search for the stopped muon converting directly into an electron with no other particles (i.e. neutrinos). The signature will be a nearly mono-energetic electron with the momentum of just below the rest mass energy of the muon. The researcher worked with in the Cosmic Ray Veto group (cosmic rays are a major source of background) and he also worked on the global alarms system.

Distance-Weighted Graph Neural Networks on FPGAs for Real-Time Particle Reconstruction in High Energy Physics

Graph neural networks have been shown to achieve excellent performance for several crucial tasks in particle physics, such as charged particle tracking, jet tagging, and clustering. An important domain for the application of these networks is the FGPA-based first layer of real-time data filtering at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, which has strict latency and resource constraints. We discuss how to design distance-weighted graph networks that can be executed with a latency of less than one μs on an FPGA. To do so, we consider a representative task associated to particle reconstruction and identification in a next-generation calorimeter operating at a particle collider. We use a graph network architecture developed for such purposes, and apply additional simplifications to match the computing constraints of Level-1 trigger systems, including weight quantization. Using the hls4ml library, we convert the compressed models into firmware to be implemented on an FPGA. Performance of the synthesized models is presented both in terms of inference accuracy and resource usage.

Quantum Networks for High Energy Physics

Quantum networks of quantum objects promise to be exponentially more powerful than the objects considered independently. To live up to this promise will require the development of error mitigation and correction strategies to preserve quantum information as it is initialized, stored, transported, utilized, and measured. The quantum information could be encoded in discrete variables such as qubits, in continuous variables, or anything in-between. Quantum computational networks promise to enable simulation of physical phenomena of interest to the HEP community. Quantum sensor networks promise new measurement capability to test for new physics and improve upon existing measurements of fundamental constants. Such networks could exist at multiple scales from the nano-scale to a global-scale quantum network.
