Spin Hall effect of vorticity

Using mapping between topological defects in an easy-plane magnet and electrical charges, we study interplay between vorticity and spin currents. Here, we demonstrate that the flow of vorticity is accompanied by the transverse spin current generation; an effect which can be termed as the spin Hall effect of vorticity. We study this effect across the BKT transition and establish the role of dissipation and spin nonconservation in the crossover from spin superfluidity to diffusive spin transport. Our results pave the way for low power computing devices relying on vorticity and spin flows that can propagate over long distances.

Interface magnetism and anomalous Hall effect in La 0.7 ⁢Sr 0.3⁢ Mn⁢O 3 /SrIr⁢O 3 bilayers

Epitaxial interfaces combining 3d and 5d transition metal oxides are a fertile playground to examine the interplay between topology and electron correlations. In this work, we explore magnetism and transport of bilayers combining ferromagnetic La 0.7⁢ Sr 0.3⁢ Mn⁢O 3 and the strong spin-orbit coupling material SrIr⁢O 3 . We have found an interfacial magnetic proximity effect driving an intrinsic contribution to the anomalous Hall effect of topological origin. The interfacial proximity interaction is enabled by the Mn-O-Ir bonding reconstruction and depends on layer sequence. While bilayers with the La 0.7⁢ Sr 0.3 ⁢Mn⁢O 3 on top featuring a robust Mn magnetism at the interface show the intrinsic AHE contribution, it is absent in bilayers with the inverted layer sequence (SrIr⁢O 3 layer on top) showing strongly suppressed magnetism at the interface. These results illustrate the leading role of interfacial atomic reconstructions on the interplay between topology and correlations at 3d/5d oxide interfaces. This finding may be of interest in future oxide topological spintronics and spin-orbitronics.

Spin spiral and topological Hall effect in Fe 3 Ga 4

A new mechanism for the topological Hall effect (THE) was recently proposed for the spiral magnet YMn 6 Sn 6 , which requires transverse conical spiral magnetism, induced by external magnetic field, combined with thermally excited helical spiral magnons. In principle, this mechanism should be applicable to other itinerant spiral magnets as well. Here, we show that another magnetic compound, Fe 3 Ga 4 , in which THE was observed experimentally before, in one of its phases satisfies this condition, and the proposed theory of thermal-fluctuation-driven THE is quantitatively consistent with the experiment. This finding suggests that this mechanism is indeed rather universal, and the effect may have been observed in other compounds before but overlooked.

Perspective–The Elusive Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect in MnBi 2 Te 4 : Materials

Observation of the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in MnBi 2 Te 4 flakes is one of the most exciting results in the study of the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4 and related compounds. However, reproducing this fascinating result has been found to be challenging. The quality of starting MnBi 2 Te 4 single crystals is believed to be the key factor. An interesting and important question to address is what is the right quality to enable the QAHE. In this perspective, we present possible approaches to tuning the magnetic and topological properties of MnBi 2 Te 4 by using lattice imperfections, strain, stacking sequence, and interactions between the substrate and flakes/films. It is of critical importance to eventually identify the factor(s) responsible for the realization of QAHE. Large Anomalous and Topological Hall Effect and Nernst Effect in a Dirac Kagome Magnet Fe 3 Ge

Searching for Kagome magnets with novel magnetic and electronic properties has been attracting significant efforts recently. Here, the magnetic, electronic, and thermoelectric properties of Fe 3 Ge single crystals with Fe atoms forming a slightly distorted Kagome lattice are reported. It is shown that Fe 3 Ge exhibits a large anomalous Hall effect and anomalous Nernst effect. The observed anomalous transverse thermoelectric conductivity $|α^A_{xz}|$ reaches ≈4.6 A m −1 K −1 , which is larger than the conventional ferromagnets and most of the topological ferromagnets reported in literature. The first-principles calculations suggest that these exceptional transport properties are dominated by the intrinsic mechanism, which highlights the significant contribution of the Berry curvature of massive Dirac gaps in the momentum space. Additionally, a topological Hall resistivity of 0.9 µΩ cm and a topological Nernst coefficient of 1.2 µV K −1 are also observed, which are presumably ascribed to the Berry phase associated with the field-induced non-zero scalar spin chirality. These features highlight the synergic effects of the Berry phases in both momentum space and real space of Fe 3 Ge, which render it an excellent candidate for room-temperature thermoelectric applications based on transverse transport.

One-dimensional antilocalization of electrons from spin disorder probed by nonlinear Hall effect

In recent years, nonreciprocal transport measurement has emerged as a probe of spin orbit interaction, spin texture, superconductivity, and other fundamental properties of materials. Here, we study the nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE) in Bi 2 Se 3 /CoFeB heterostructures measured by second harmonic voltage method. Magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements demonstrate the origin of the NLHE to be the asymmetric magnon scattering mechanism. Moreover, a linear relation between the nonlinear Hall resistance and the electron phase coherence length of Bi 2 Se 3 is observed between 5 and 50 K. In this work, we propose a phenomenological model that explains the enhancement of the NLHE below 50 K as a result of one-dimensional antilocalization of electrons from spin disorder, enabled by spin-momentum locking and conservation of angular momentum.

Multi-$\mathcal{k}$ magnetic structure and large anomalous Hall effect in candidate magnetic Weyl semimetal NdAlGe

Here, the magnetic structure, magnetoresistance (MR), and Hall effect of the noncentrosymmetric magnetic semimetal NdAlGe are investigated, revealing an unusual magnetic state and anomalous transport properties that are associated with the electronic structure of this compound. The magnetization and MR measurements are both highly anisotropic and indicate an Ising-like magnetic system. The magnetic structure is complex in that it involves two magnetic ordering vectors, including an incommensurate spin density wave and commensurate ferrimagnetic state in zero field. We have discovered a large anomalous Hall conductivity that reaches ≈430 Ω –1 cm –1 , implying that it originates from an intrinsic Berry curvature effect stemming from Weyl nodes found in the electronic structure. These electronic structure calculations indicate the presence of nested Fermi surface pockets with nesting wave vectors like the measured magnetic ordering wave vector and the presence of Weyl nodes in proximity to the Fermi surface. We associate the incommensurate magnetic structure with the large anomalous Hall response to be the result of the combination of Fermi surface nesting and the Berry curvature associated with Weyl nodes.

Anomalous Hall effect emerging from field-induced Weyl nodes in SmAlSi

The intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) has been reported in numerous ferromagnetic Weyl semimetals. However, the AHE in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) or paramagnetic (PM) state of Weyl semimetals has rarely been observed experimentally. Different mechanisms have been proposed to account for the emergence of the AHE from different types of magnetic order. Here, in this Letter, we propose a new model that explains the observed AHE in both the AFM and PM states of the noncentrosymmetric Weyl semimetal SmAlSi. The newly proposed mechanism is based on magnetic-field-induced Weyl node evolution, which qualitatively explains the temperature dependence of the anomalous Hall conductivity, which displays unconventional power-law behavior in both the AFM and PM states of SmAlSi.

Hall effect for Dirac electrons in graphene exposed to an Abrikosov flux lattice

The proposals for realizing exotic particles through coupling of quantum Hall effect to superconductivity involve spatially non-uniform magnetic fields. As a step toward that goal, we study, both theoretically and experimentally, a system of Dirac electrons exposed to an Abrikosov flux lattice. Here, we theoretically find that the non-uniform magnetic field causes a carrier-density-dependent reduction of the Hall conductivity. Our studies show that this reduction originates from a rather subtle effect: a levitation of the Berry curvature within Landau levels broadened by the non-uniform magnetic field. Experimentally, we measure the magneto-transport in a monolayer graphene-hexagonal boron nitride-niobium diselenide (NbSe 2 ) heterostructure, and find a density-dependent reduction of the Hall resistivity of graphene as the temperature is lowered from above the superconducting critical temperature of NbSe 2 , when the magnetic field is uniform, to below, where the magnetic field bunches into an Abrikosov flux lattice.

Incommensurate magnetic orders and topological Hall effect in the square-net centrosymmetric EuGa 2 Al 2 system

Neutron diffraction on the centrosymmetric square-net magnet EuGa 2 Al 2 reveals multiple incommensurate magnetic states (AFM1, 2, 3) in zero field. In applied field, a new magnetic phase (A) is identified from magnetization and transport measurements, bounded by two of the μ 0 H=0 incommensurate magnetic phases (AFM1, helical, and AFM3, cycloidal) with different moment orientations. Moreover, magnetotransport measurements indicate the presence of a topological Hall effect, with maximum values centered in the A phase. Together, these results render EuGa 2 Al 2 a material with noncoplanar or topological spin texture in applied field. X-ray diffraction reveals an out-of-plane (OOP) charge density wave (CDW) below T CDW ~50 K while the magnetic propagation vector lies in plane below T N =19.5 K. Together these data point to a new route to realizing in-plane noncollinear spin textures through an OOP CDW. In turn, these noncollinear spin textures may be unstable against the formation of topological spin textures in an applied field.

Quantum Hall effect in a Weyl-Hubbard model: Interplay between topology and correlation

The interplay between topology and electronic correlations offer a rich avenue for discovering emergent quantum phenomena in condensed matter systems. Here, in this work, starting from the Weyl-Hubbard model, we investigate the quantum Hall effect to explore the consequence of onsite Hubbard repulsion on nontrivial Weyl band topology in the presence of an external magnetic field. Within the Gutzwiller projected wavefunction method, we find the system to undergo multiple topological phase transitions by tuning on-site Coulomb interaction, including two distinct Weyl phases with different numbers of Weyl node pairs and a trivial narrow band insulator. Crucially, these two Weyl phases may be identified by the sign of their chiral Landau levels. The possible experimental signature of these topological phases and correlation effects is provided by the magnetic-field dependent quantum Hall conductivity within the Kubo response theory.

Exceptionally large anomalous Hall effect due to anticrossing of spin-split bands in the antiferromagnetic half-Heusler compound TbPtBi

We have investigated the magnetotransport properties and the topological electronic structure of the half-Heusler compound TbPtBi. Our experiments reveal an exceptionally large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the canted antiferromagnetic state of TbPtBi with the anomalous Hall angle reaching ~0.68–0.76, which is a few times larger than the previously reported record in GdPtBi. First-principles electronic structure and the associated anomalous Hall conductivity were computed in order to interpret the experimental results. Furthermore, our analysis shows that the AHE in TbPtBi does not originate from the Weyl points but that it is driven by the large net Berry curvature produced by the anticrossing of spin-split bands near the Fermi level in TbPtBi.

Alloying vanadium in Mn Bi 2 Te 4 for robust ferromagnetic coupling and quantum anomalous Hall effect

The intrinsic antiferromagnetic (AFM) interlayer coupling in the two-dimensional magnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4 places a restriction on realizing a stable quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) [Y. Deng et al., Science 367, 895 (2020)]. Through density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate the possibility of tuning the AFM coupling to the ferromagnetic coupling in Mn Bi 2 Te 4 films by alloying about 50% V with Mn. As a result, the QAHE can be achieved without alternation with the even or odd septuple layers. This provides a practical strategy to get a robust QAHE in ultrathin Mn Bi 2 Te 4 films, rendering them attractive for technological innovations.

Observation of anomalous thermal Hall effect in a Kagome superconductor

Broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) in superconductors can induce not only spontaneous magnetization by the finite angular momentum of Cooper pairs but also the anomalous thermal Hall effects (ATHEs), whose detection has been extremely challenging. Here, we report the successful observation of an ATHE developing below the superconducting transition temperature at zero magnetic field in the kagome-lattice superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5 . This finding is verified by the absence of a signal in a conventional type-II superconductor using the same setup and by ruling out the trapped-vortex effects through micro-Hall array measurements. Both the temperature dependence and the magnitude of the observed anomalous thermal Hall conductivity are quite different from those expected for the quantized thermal edge current of an intrinsic ATHE but consistent with extrinsic impurity-induced ATHEs in chiral superconductivity. Our study of ATHE offers an alternative approach to probe TRS breaking in the superconducting states.

Anomalous Hall effects in chiral superconductors

We report theoretical results for the electronic contribution to thermal and electrical transport for chiral superconductors belonging to even or odd-parity E 1 and E 2 representations of the tetragonal and hexagonal point groups. Chiral superconductors exhibit novel properties that depend on the topology of the order parameter and Fermi surface, and—as we highlight—the structure of the impurity potential. An anomalous thermal Hall effect is predicted and shown to be sensitive to the winding number, ν, of the chiral order parameter via Andreev scattering that transfers angular momentum from the chiral condensate to excitations that scatter off the random potential. For heat transport in a chiral superconductor with isotropic impurity scattering, i.e., point-like impurities, a transverse heat current is obtained for ν = ± 1, but vanishes for | ν | > 1. This is not a universal result. For finite-size impurities with radii of order or greater than the Fermi wavelength, R ≥ ℏ / p f, the thermal Hall conductivity is finite for chiral order with | ν | ≥ 2, and determined by a specific Fermi-surface average of the differential cross-section for electron-impurity scattering. Our results also provide quantitative formulae for analyzing and interpreting thermal transport measurements for superconductors predicted to exhibit broken time-reversal and mirror symmetries.

Unconventional nonlinear Hall effects in twisted multilayer 2D materials

We present the first investigation of unusual nonlinear Hall effects in twisted multilayer 2D materials. Contrary to expectations, our study shows that these nonlinear effects are not merely extensions of their monolayer counterparts. Instead, we find that stacking order and pairwise interactions between neighboring layers, mediated by Berry curvatures, play a pivotal role in shaping their collective nonlinear optical response. By combining large-scale Real-Time Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (RT-TDDFT) simulations with model Hamiltonian analyses, we demonstrate a remarkable second-harmonic transverse response in hexagonal boron nitride four-layers, even in cases where the total Berry curvature cancels out. Furthermore, our symmetry analysis of the layered structures provides a simplified framework for predicting nonlinear responses in multilayer materials in general. Our investigation challenges the prevailing understanding of nonlinear optical responses in layered materials and opens new avenues for the design and development of advanced materials with tailored optical properties.

Anomalous Hall effect in the weak-itinerant ferrimagnet FeCr 2 Te 4

In this study, we carried out a comprehensive study of electronic transport, thermal, and thermodynamic properties in Fe Cr 2 Te 4 single crystals. It exhibits bad-metallic behavior and anomalous Hall effect (AHE) below a weak-itinerant paramagnetic-to-ferrimagnetic transition T c ~ 123 K. The linear scaling between the anomalous Hall resistivity ρ x y and the longitudinal resistivity ρ x x implies that the AHE in Fe Cr 2 Te 4 is most likely dominated by an extrinsic skew-scattering mechanism rather than an intrinsic KL or an extrinsic side-jump mechanism, which is supported by our Berry phase calculations.

Thermal Hall effect in a van der Waals triangular magnet FeCL 2

Thermal transport is a pivotal probe for studying low-energy, charge-neutral quasiparticles in insulating magnets. In this Letter, we report an observation of large magnetothermal conductivity and thermal Hall effect (THE) in a van der Waals antiferromagnet FeCl 2 . The magnetothermal conductivity reaches over ~700%, indicating strong magnon-phonon coupling. Furthermore, we find an appreciable thermal Hall signal which changes sign concurrently with the spin-flip transition from the antiferromagnetic state to the polarized ferromagnetic state. Our theoretical calculations suggest that, in addition to the Berry curvature induced at the anticrossing points of the hybridized magnon and acoustic phonon modes of FeCl 2 , other mechanisms are needed to account for the magnitude of the observed THE.
