Observation of MeV gamma-ray events during May 1967 from ERS-18

Gamma-ray fluxes between 25 keV and 6 MeV were observed by instruments aboard the Environmental Research Satellite-18 (ERS-18)during the great solar flares of May 21 and May 23, 1967. Measurements were made with a 6.35-cm-diameter by 7.65-cm-long Nal scintillation counter with five differential channels between 0.25 and 6.0 MeV. Data obtained during the event at 1945 UT on May 23, 1967, can be fitted by a two-part, power-law, differential-number spectrum. One part is of spectral index 3.2 between 8 keV and 0.6 MeV, and the other is of spectral index 1.2 above 0.6 MeV. An upper limit of 0.52 photons is set for 2.23 MeV line strength for this event. In all three bursts, tentatively associated with white light flares, the MeV-range fluxes declined more slowly than the 25-keV fluxes.

Features and technologies of ERS-1 (ESA) and X-SAR antennas

Features and technologies of planar waveguide array antennas developed for spaceborne microwave sensors are described. Such antennas are made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) employing special manufacturing and metallization techniques to achieve satisfactory electrical properties. Mechanical design enables deployable antenna structures necessary for satellite applications (e.g., ESA ERS-1). The slotted waveguide concept provides high aperture efficiency, good beamshaping capabilities, and low losses. These CFRP waveguide antennas feature low mass, high accuracy and stiffness, and can be operated within wide temperature ranges.

Superconductivity above 90 K in the square-planar compound system ABa2Cu3O(6 + x) with A = Y, La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Ho, Er, and Lu

Superconductivity has been found in the 90-K range in ABa2Cu3O(6 + x) with A = La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Ho, Er, and Lu in addition to Y. The results suggest that the unique square-planar Cu atoms, each surrounded by four or six oxygen atoms, are crucial to the superconductivity of oxides in general. In particular, the high Tc of ABa2Cu3O(6 + x) is attributed mainly to the quasi-two-dimensional assembly of the CuO2-Ba-CuO(2 + x)Ba-CuO2 layers sandwiched between two A layers, with particular emphasis in the CuO(2 + x) layers. Higher-Tc oxides are predicted for compounds with bigger assemblies of CuO2 layers coupled by Ba layers.

In situ observations of ClO in the wintertime Northern Hemisphere: ER-2 aircraft results from 21 N to 61 N latitude

Measurements of lower stratospheric ClO taken during a NASA ER-2 flight between Moffett Field, CA (37 N, 122 W) and Great Slave Lake, Canada (61 N, 116 W) on 13 February 1988 are reported. Northbound, the aircraft was flown at about 20 km altitude from 39 N to 56 N, at 18 km from there to 58 N, in a descent to 15 km at 60 N, and in a rise and turn at the northernmost point. The southbound leg was flown in a gradual climb from 20 km to 21.5 km. On this day, the central position of the Arctic polar vortex, as determined by an NMC analysis of heights and temperatures at the 50 mb and 70 mb levels, was approximately 79 N, 100 W. Because the vortex was located on the North American side of the pole, the aircraft was able to reach a point slightly inside the maximum horizontal wind region where wind speeds were 80 to 90 knots. The general pattern for the observed ClO is that it increased with both latitude and altitude, and attained a maximum of about 55 pptv at 61 N latitude and 20.5 km altitude. This value is about 20 times smaller than the maxima observed over Antarctica, but is comparable to those seen just outside the chemical containment vessel located inside the Antarctic Polar vortex. On the other hand, in a comparison with northern midlatitude data taken on this and three other February flights, ClO mixing ratios observed north of 55 N latitude are 2 to 5 times larger at all flight altitudes (15 to 20 km). Possible reasons are discussed for this enhancement over midlatitude and the evidence is considered for whether or not the instruments sampled Arctic polar vortex air. A second feature of the data is the strong positive correlation between ClO and O3 during the entire flight.

In situ observations of BrO over Antarctica: ER-2 aircraft results from 54 S to 72 S latitude

Bromine monoxide was observed in situ at approximately 18 km altitude during nine flights of the NASA ER-2 aircraft from Punta Arenas, Chile (54 altitude) to 72 S latitude over the Palmer Peninsula, Antarctica. The first flight for the BrO detection system was on 28 August. Here, the results from the flights over Antarctica and from the ferry flights from Punta Arenas to Moffett Field, CA (37 N latitude are reported. A key question concerning BrO, then, is how it is distributed with respect to the chemical containment vessel defined by elevated ClO mixing ratios. This question is answered with greatest statistical significance if the data are averaged into five regions: outside the vessel, aircraft heading south; inside the vessel on the same potential temperature surface; in the dive region; inside the vessel on a given potential temperature surface, aircraft heading north; and outside the vessel on the same surface. The result is that the BrO distribution inside the chemical containment vessel was different from that found outside. Inside, the BrO mixing ratio was (5.0 plus or minus 1.1) pptv between the 400 K and 460 K potential temperature surfaces, decreasing only slightly with potential temperature, and was less than 3.6 pptv below the 4 00 K surface. The abundance of BrO inside the chemical containment vessel showed no discernible temporal trend during the course of the nine flights. Outside the vessel, the BrO mixing ratio was (4.7 plus or minus 1.3) pptv near the 450 K surface, but decreased to (2.8 plus or minus 1.0) pptv near the 420 K surface.

Development of a satellite SAR image spectra and altimeter wave height data assimilation system for ERS-1

The applicability of ERS-1 wind and wave data for wave models was studied using the WAM third generation wave model and SEASAT altimeter, scatterometer and SAR data. A series of global wave hindcasts is made for the surface stress and surface wind fields by assimilation of scatterometer data for the full 96-day SEASAT and also for two wind field analyses for shorter periods by assimilation with the higher resolution ECMWF T63 model and by subjective analysis methods. It is found that wave models respond very sensitively to inconsistencies in wind field analyses and therefore provide a valuable data validation tool. Comparisons between SEASAT SAR image spectra and theoretical SAR spectra derived from the hindcast wave spectra by Monte Carlo simulations yield good overall agreement for 32 cases representing a wide variety of wave conditions. It is concluded that SAR wave imaging is sufficiently well understood to apply SAR image spectra with confidence for wave studies if supported by realistic wave models and theoretical computations of the strongly nonlinear mapping of the wave spectrum into the SAR image spectrum. A closed nonlinear integral expression for this spectral mapping relation is derived which avoids the inherent statistical errors of Monte Carlo computations and may prove to be more efficient numerically.

Ozone destruction by chlorine radicals within the Antarctic vortex - The spatial and temporal evolution of ClO-O3 anticorrelation based on in situ ER-2 data

The chemical evolution of the Antarctic vortex region was studied during August 23-September 22, 1987 on the basis of in situ O3 and ClO data collected by the ER-2 aircraft. Particular attention is given to the evolution of the ClO-O3 anticorrelation from the first flight on August 23, 1987, which penetrated well into the vortex, through the course of 10 flights culminating on September 22, 1987. It is concluded that the disappearance of ozone within the Antarctic vortex results from halogen-catalyzed recombination of O3 to molecular oxygen.

Millimeter wave surface resistance of RBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (R=Y,Eu,Dy,Sm,Er) superconductors

The measurements are reported of the millimeter wave surface resistance R(sub s) at 58.6 GHz of bulk samples of RBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (R = Y,Eu,Dy,Sm,Er) and of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) superconducting films, in the temperature range from 20 to 300 K. The bulk samples were prepared by cold pressing the powders of RBa2Cu3O(7-delta) into one in. disks. The powders were prepared by several sinterings in one atmosphere of oxygen at 925 C, with grindings between sinterings, to obtain the superconducting phase. The thin films were deposited on SrTiO3 and LaGaO3 substrates by pulsed laser ablation. Each sample was measured by replacing the end wall of a gold-plated Te sub 013 circular mode copper cavity with the sample and determining the cavity quality factor . From the difference in the Q-factor of the cavity, with and without the sample, the R(sub s) of the sample was determined.

Analysis of ER-2 radiometer and lidar observations from the 1987 marine stratus experiment

Extensive remote sensing observations of marine stratus clouds were acquired from the NASA ER-2 aircraft during the 1987 FIRE stratus field experiment. The observations included high spatial resolution imaging radiometry at eighteen wavelengths and active lidar cloud top profiling. Analysis of these data can provide results to both enhance and extend aircraft in-situ cloud physics observations. For the spectral imaging radiometry observations of the marine stratus, a potentially useful result was obtained. For near infrared wavelengths, a large number of the bidirectional reflectance observations included persistent and significant single scattering features. With few exceptions, the features were not correspondingly observed at visible wavelengths. An initial comparison to direct cloud physics measurements give a good agreement (Spinhirne and Nakajima, 1989). The analysis of lidar returns from marine stratus cloud tops were shown to be potentially valuable for study of the microphysical and dynamic characteristics of the clouds (Boers et al., 1988, Spinhirne et al., 1989). Analysis involving cloud top water content and height spectra was applied to some of the extensive lidar observations of the 1987 field experiment. Derivation of cloud top radiative parameters and comparison to in-situ observations are planned.
