Potential Damage to Flight Hardware from MIL-STD-462 CS02 Setup

The MIL-STD-462 CS02 conducted susceptibility test setup, performed during electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing, consists of an audio transformer with the secondary used as an inductor and a large capacitor. Together, these two components form an L-type low-pass filter to minimize the injected test signal input into the power source. Some flight hardware power input configurations are not compatible with this setup and break into oscillation when powered up. This can damage flight hardware and caused a catastrophic failure to an item tested in the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Large EMC Test Facility.

Hardware

The full complement of EDOMP investigations called for a broad spectrum of flight hardware ranging from commercial items, modified for spaceflight, to custom designed hardware made to meet the unique requirements of testing in the space environment. In addition, baseline data collection before and after spaceflight required numerous items of ground-based hardware. Two basic categories of ground-based hardware were used in EDOMP testing before and after flight: (1) hardware used for medical baseline testing and analysis, and (2) flight-like hardware used both for astronaut training and medical testing. To ensure post-landing data collection, hardware was required at both the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) and the Dryden Flight Research Center (DFRC) landing sites. Items that were very large or sensitive to the rigors of shipping were housed permanently at the landing site test facilities. Therefore, multiple sets of hardware were required to adequately support the prime and backup landing sites plus the Johnson Space Center (JSC) laboratories. Development of flight hardware was a major element of the EDOMP. The challenges included obtaining or developing equipment that met the following criteria: (1) compact (small size and light weight), (2) battery-operated or requiring minimal spacecraft power, (3) sturdy enough to survive the rigors of spaceflight, (4) quiet enough to pass acoustics limitations, (5) shielded and filtered adequately to assure electromagnetic compatibility with spacecraft systems, (6) user-friendly in a microgravity environment, and (7) accurate and efficient operation to meet medical investigative requirements.

Stirling Research Laboratory Providing Independent Performance Verification of Convertors for a Stirling Radioisotope Generator

The Department of Energy (DOE), Germantown, Maryland, Stirling Technology Company (STC), Kennewick, Washington, and NASA Glenn Research Center are developing a free-piston Stirling convertor for a high-efficiency Stirling Radioisotope Generator for NASA Space Science missions. This generator is being developed for multimission use, including providing electric power for unmanned Mars rovers and for deep space missions. STC is developing the 55-W Technology Demonstration Convertor (TDC) under contract to DOE. Glenn is conducting an in-house technology project to assist in developing the convertor for readiness for space qualification and mission implementation. As part of this effort, a Stirling Research Laboratory was established to test the TDC's and related technologies. A key task is providing an independent verification and validation of the TDC performance. Four TDC's are now being tested at Glenn. Acceptance testing has been completed for all convertors, and in general, performance agreed well with that achieved by STC prior to the delivery of the convertors. Performance mapping has also been completed on two of the convertors over a range of hot-end temperatures (450 to 650 C), cold-end temperatures (80 to 120 C), and piston amplitudes (5.2 to 6.2 mm). These test data are available online at http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/tmsb/. The TDC's can be tested in either a horizontal orientation with dual-opposed convertors or in a vertical orientation with a single convertor. Synchronized dual-opposed pairs are used for dynamically balanced operation that results in very low levels of vibration. The Stirling Research Laboratory also supports launch environment testing of the TDC's in Glenn's Structural Dynamics Laboratory and electromagnetic interference and electromagnetic compatibility characterization and reduction efforts. In addition, the TDC's will be used for long-term endurance testing, and preparations are underway for unattended operation.

Final Results for the GRC Supporting Technology Development Project for the 110-Watt Stirling Radioisotope Generator (SRG110)

From 1999-2006, the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) supported the development of a high-efficiency, nominal 110-We Stirling Radioisotope Generator (SRG110) for potential use on NASA missions, including deep space missions, Mars rovers, and lunar applications. Lockheed Martin (LM) was the system integrator for the SRG110, under contract to the Department of Energy (DOE). Infinia Corporation (formerly Stirling Technology Company) developed the Stirling convertor, first as a contractor to DOE and then under subcontract to LM. The SRG110 development has been redirected, and recent program changes have been made to significantly increase the specific power of the generator. System development of an Advanced Stirling Radioisotope Generator (ASRG) has now begun, using a lightweight, advanced convertor from Sunpower, Inc. This paper summarizes the results of the supporting technology effort that GRC completed for the SRG110. GRC tasks included convertor extended-duration testing in air and thermal vacuum environments, heater head life assessment, materials studies, permanent magnet aging characterization, linear alternator evaluations, structural dynamics testing, electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) characterization, organic materials evaluations, reliability studies, and development of an end-to-end system dynamic model. Related efforts are now continuing in many of these areas to support ASRG development.

GRC Supporting Technology for NASA's Advanced Stirling Radioisotope Generator (ASRG)

From 1999 to 2006, the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) supported a NASA project to develop a high-efficiency, nominal 110-We Stirling Radioisotope Generator (SRG110) for potential use on NASA missions. Lockheed Martin was selected as the System Integration Contractor for the SRG110, under contract to the Department of Energy (DOE). The potential applications included deep space missions, and Mars rovers. The project was redirected in 2006 to make use of the Advanced Stirling Convertor (ASC) that was being developed by Sunpower, Inc. under contract to GRC, which would reduce the mass of the generator and increase the power output. This change would approximately double the specific power and result in the Advanced Stirling Radioisotope Generator (ASRG). The SRG110 supporting technology effort at GRC was replanned to support the integration of the Sunpower convertor and the ASRG. This paper describes the ASRG supporting technology effort at GRC and provides details of the contributions in some of the key areas. The GRC tasks include convertor extended-operation testing in air and in thermal vacuum environments, heater head life assessment, materials studies, permanent magnet characterization and aging tests, structural dynamics testing, electromagnetic interference and electromagnetic compatibility characterization, evaluation of organic materials, reliability studies, and analysis to support controller development.

Maintaining Stability During a Conducted-Ripple EMC Test

An improved technique, and electronic circuitry to implement the technique, have been developed for a military-standard electromagnetic-compatibility (EMC) test in which one analyzes susceptibility to low-frequency ripple conducted into the equipment under test via a DC power line. In the traditional technique for performing the particular test, the ripple is coupled onto the DC power line via a transformer. Depending upon some design details of the equipment under test, the inductance of the transformer can contribute a degree of instability that results in an oscillation of amplitude large enough to destroy the equipment. It is usually possible to suppress the oscillation by connecting a damping resistor to the primary terminals of the ripple-injection transformer. However, it is important to emphasize the usually in the preceding sentence: sometimes, the resistive damping becomes insufficient to suppress destructive oscillation. In addition, undesirably, the resistor contributes to power dissipation and power demand, and thereby also necessitates the use of a larger ripple voltage amplifier. Yet another disadvantage of the transformer-coupling technique is that the transformer introduces low-frequency distortion of the injected ripple voltage. The improved technique makes it possible to inject ripple with very low distortion at low frequency, without inducing oscillation. In this technique, a transformer is not used: Instead, power is fed to the equipment under test via series power field-effect transistors (FETs) controlled by a summing operational amplifier. One of the inputs to the amplifier controls the DC component of the power-line voltage; the other input, generated by an external oscillator, controls the ripple component. The circuitry for implementing this technique includes panel displays, an internal power supply for the operational amplifier and panel displays, and amplitude controls for the DC and ripple powerline voltage components.

Radiated Emissions from a Remote-Controlled Airplane-Measured in a Reverberation Chamber

A full-vehicle, subscale all-electric model airplane was tested for radiated emissions, using a reverberation chamber. The mission of the NASA model airplane is to test in-flight airframe damage diagnosis and battery prognosis algorithms, and provide experimental data for other aviation safety research. Subscale model airplanes are economical experimental tools, but assembling their systems from hobbyist and low-cost components may lead to unforseen electromagnetic compatibility problems. This report provides a guide for accommodating the on-board radio systems, so that all model airplane systems may be operated during radiated emission testing. Radiated emission data are provided for on-board systems being operated separately and together, so that potential interferors can be isolated and mitigated. The report concludes with recommendations for EMI/EMC best practices for subscale model airplanes and airships used for research.

EMC Test Challenges for NASA's James Webb Space Telescope

This presentation describes the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) tests performed on the Integrated Science Instrument Module (ISIM), the science payload of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), at NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in August 2015. By its very nature of being an integrated payload, it could be treated as neither a unit level test nor an integrated spacecraft observatory test. Non-standard test criteria are described along with non-standard test methods that had to be developed in order to evaluate them. Results are presented to demonstrate that all test criteria were met in less than the time allocated.

Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer Integration and Test

The Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) is a NASA collaborative flight project to explore the lunar exosphere. It is being developed through a unique partnership between NASA's Ames Research Center (ARC) and Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). Each center brings its own experience and flight systems heritage to the task of integrating and testing the LADEE subsystems, instruments, and spacecraft. As an "in-house" flight project being implemented at low-cost and moderate risk, LADEE relies on single-string subsystems and protoflight hardware to accomplish its mission. Integration and test (l&T) of the LADEE spacecraft with the instruments will be performed at GSFC, and includes assembly, integration, functional testing, and flight qualification and acceptance testing. Due to the nature of the LADEE mission, l&T requirements include strict contamination control measures and instrument calibration procedures. Environmental testing will include electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), vibro-acoustic testing, and thermal-balance/vacuum. Upon successful completion of spacecraft l&T, LADEE will be launched from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility. Launch of the LADEE spacecraft is currently scheduled for December 2012.

Integration and Test (I&T) Horror Stories and the Lessons Learned

I've been asked to be a presenter along with a panel of fellow NASA Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) engineers at this year's IEEE EMC & Signal and Power Integrity (SIPI) 2019 symposium. The topic I am asked to cover is in regards to I&T horror stories because of my 15 years of personal experience as an EMC test engineer with Code 549. I am planning on only having slides with photos of test methods we no longer use as well as cover some mishaps that have happened over the years both within my organization and throughout the space industry. Highlighting the mistakes that were made, the lessons learned from those incidents and how they've effected how we test today.

Conducted Susceptibility Data Adaptation Tool

The purpose of this research project is to help NASA scientists increase effectivity in testing by reducing the amount of time required for data conversion from initial measurements to the analysis stage. This project resulted in a data conversion tool developed in python using the openpyxl library. When lab personnel perform the Conducted Susceptibility 101 (CS101) and Conducted Susceptibility 02 (CS02) tests in the Semi-anechoic Electromagnetic Compatibility Test Facility at NASA Langley Research Center, the driving code produces a text file under the .DAT extension.The data must be manually converted the .DAT file into an Excel file line by line for data analysis.The Conducted Susceptibility Data Adaptation Tool (CSDAT) uses python code to convert the .DAT files to spreadsheets automatically which saves lab personnel time which they could use for faster analysis as well as prevents possible human error such as leaving out a line of data in the manual conversion process.

NavCube3-mini Lunar GNSS Receiver

This paper describes development and testing of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s new NavCube3-mini (NC3m) spaceborne, weak-signal GNSS receiver, which targets all Earth orbit regimes with special focus on lunar applications. NC3m derives from the ground-breaking Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission Navigator GPS receiver. The MMS-Navigator (launched 2015) holds a Guinness World Record for highest altitude GPS fix and is currently in a highly elliptic orbit with a 29 Earth radii apogee, nearly half lunar distance. NC3m has reduced size, weight, and power compared to the MMS-Navigator, making it suitable for smallsat applications, and adds multi-frequency and multi-GNSS capabilities, among other improvements. A NC3m engineering test unit was subjected to and successfully completed a comprehensive Technology Readiness Level 6 (system/subsystem model or prototype demonstration in a relevant environment) testing campaign in the second half of 2022. This involved high-fidelity simulations in LEO, GEO, and lunar regimes and full environmental testing, including vibration, thermal vacuum, and electromagnetic compatibility. An overview of the NC3m receiver, the test setup, and a sample of results is presented. The results include predicted performance at high-altitude and in the lunar regime.

X-57 Traction Power and Command Systems Development

This paper describes the final, as-built design of the X‑57 Maxwell aircraft power and command system architecture that implements the electrified propulsion capability. The development of the traction power, command, and avionics power subsystems proceeded as planned at the initial project critical design review, but improvements to the design were identified following the development of detailed operations concepts and integrated subsystem and system testing. The redundant architecture with A‑side and B‑side buses provided a robust framework for a developmental system that would turn out to have a lower technology readiness than had been assumed upon project formulation. As the project team identified reliability or performance gaps in the electrified propulsion powertrain components and their interactions with the other vehicle systems, the traction power, command, and avionics architectures were modified to accommodate the modified systems. Following the publication of the planned design approach at the critical design review milestone [1], the project team developed the flight hardware and software, integrated the systems, and adjusted the design and qualification activities to address gaps in the components, system architecture, and requirements as the gaps were realized. In addition to inherent challenges in development of these subsystems, the integration of this new technology with adjacent critical systems in an aircraft configuration posed additional challenges that drove design considerations across the subsystem development and the other vehicle systems. Integration complications included electromagnetic compatibility, thermal performance, and tolerance of single-point failures internal and external to the powerplant. Development of a qualification program was required for the new motors, inverters, and batteries, and hardware performance during component qualification fed back into the development process and led lessons learned and redesign of key elements.

Off-Earth Servicing Component Advancement (OESCA) Flight-like Coriolis Mass Flowmeter Development

With the completion of this initial technology development effort, additional work will be required for infusion and advancement through TRL 7. The remainder of the flight-level environmental testing (electromagnetic interference and compatibility or electromagnetic interference/electromagnetic compatibility (EMI/EMC), thermal vacuum or TVAC, along with vibration and shock testing) and post-test functional checkouts will need to be completed and are currently planned as part of an awarded STMD Early Career Initiative (ECI) Project called Advancement of Exploration Components for In-Space Servicing or AXCIS. The results and reports from these additional tests during the ECI effort will complete the technology development package, advancing the TRL to 5 or 6 while providing a vendor capable of manufacturing flight units and a flight-ready design as well as lessons-learned from the environmental testing. The Coriolis flowmeter development unit would then be incorporated into a demonstration testbed system for microgravity testing to further understand how it functions and performs in a space-like environment, advancing the developed technology to TRL 6 or 7. Following this infusion path will enable NASA program(s)/proposal(s) to procure a flight-rated high accuracy Coriolis mass flowmeter for incorporation into in-space and Lunar/Martian surface spacecraft propellant resupply systems which, after successful mission use, will bring the TRL to 7+.
