A 294 GHz 0.47m W Caterpillar amplifier based transmitter in 65 nm CMOS for THz data-links

A fully integrated CMOS THz transmitter for short range data-links is presented which provides 0.47 mW of output power to 294 GHz. The output frequency is derived from a 147 GHz on-chip LO and fully differential caterpillar power amplifier combined with a transformer coupled frequency doubler. The transmitter is integrated with an on-chip dipole antenna for use in THz communication systems and consumes a total of 258 mW.

Material Variability Effects on Damage Development Within Composite Adhesively Bonded Joints

Use of composite adhesively bonded joints (ABJ) is of critical importance to the adoption of composite materials in the automotive industry, as ABJ enable lower stress concentrations as compared to conventional mechanically fastened joints. ABJ are better suited for joining composite materials as compared to fastened joints because fastened joints require drilling of holes which locally affect composite material structure. Composite materials and adhesives are subject to unavoidable stochastic local material variations which make different failure scenarios possible. An experimentally tested ABJ configuration is simulated using finite element analysis (FEA). Experimentally, under tension, the joints failed by three major failure modes, with peak loads ranging from 13.0-16.1 kips. Progressive failure analysis tools are used to simulate damage development within each material within the joint. The simulation agreed well with the average experimental peak load. Stochastically occurring adhesive porosity and matrix-fiber micro-disbonding were numerically simulated. The simulations revealed a similar trend as observed experimentally: joints which failed at higher peak loads had lower levels of damage within the face-sheets of the composite panels which were adhesively bonded; these joints which failed at higher peak loads also had greater damage in the doubler of the experimentally tested double lap joint configuration.

Characterizing Face Sheet/Core Disbonding Using the Single Cantilever Beam Test: Results from an International Round Robin

Test results from an international round robin are presented. The single cantilever beam (SCB) test was used to characterize face sheet/core disbonding in sandwich components in an effort to help standardization. Each of the seven participating laboratories performed a set of five baseline tests using the same protocol, however, using their own specific equipment. In addition, each laboratory performed two sets of tests with altered tests conditions which included using a test fixture with a translating carriage and performing the tests with different loading and unloading speeds. The orientation of the disbond front with respect to the honeycomb core cells was varied and the effect on the fracture toughness was also studied. Additional factors that could influence test results were investigated, such as the use of a saw cut starter disbond as an alternative to Teflon® release film, and the effects of using a face sheet doubler to increase the bending stiffness. For each set of tests, summary results such as load/displacements plots, observed disbond growth location and calculated energy release rates are reported and a comparison of results between labs is presented. Critical strain energy release rate measurements from SCB tests are also compared with measurements made from an alternative test, namely the double cantilever beam with uneven bending moments (DCB-UBM) test, which has been studied extensively at the Technical University of Denmark and proposed as a mixed-mode test standard. A set of recommendations are made with respect to improving the SCB test and a path to standardization is presented.
