Effects of delta ray electrons on measurement uncertainties of harp system

A harp system, which is a multi-wire beam profile monitoring (MWPM) system, is planned upstream of the spallation target to make in situ calibration of beam current density configuration on the target along with beam imaging from luminescent coating on the beam entrance window at the Second Target Station (STS) of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This beam interception-based beam diagnostics system on the target will be used to ensure that the maximum beam loads on the target are within the design range during neutron production. Current design of the harp consists of three layers of measurement wires each of which is sandwiched between voltage biasing wire planes. The signal obtained from each measurement wire layer is disturbed by secondary electrons (SE) and delta rays produced by beam-matter interactions in neighboring wires and ionization of residual gases in accelerator vacuum. While the backgrounds from SE can be suppressed by voltage biasing, the delta-ray electrons with kinetic energies above keV ranges overcome the electric potential bias. In this paper, we study the effects of delta-rays on the measurement uncertainties of MWPM using the particle transport simulation code FLUKA. Furthermore, the cases where the harp system is installed in the proximity of a large delta ray sources such as proton beam window or in the core vessel filled with sub-atmospheric gas have been studied.

A variable-step-size robust delta modulator.

Description of an analytically obtained optimum adaptive delta modulator-demodulator configuration. The device utilizes two past samples to obtain a step size which minimizes the mean square error for a Markov-Gaussian source. The optimum system is compared, using computer simulations, with a linear delta modulator and an enhanced Abate delta modulator. In addition, the performance is compared to the rate distortion bound for a Markov source. It is shown that the optimum delta modulator is neither quantization nor slope-overload limited. The highly nonlinear equations obtained for the optimum transmitter and receiver are approximated by piecewise-linear equations in order to obtain system equations which can be transformed into hardware. The derivation of the experimental system is presented.

The transmission of low frequency medical data using delta modulation techniques.

The transmission of low-frequency medical data using delta modulation techniques is described. The delta modulators are used to distribute the low-frequency data into the passband of the telephone lines. Both adaptive and linear delta modulators are considered. Optimum bit rates to minimize distortion and intersymbol interference are discussed. Vibrocardiographic waves are analyzed as a function of bit rate and delta modulator configuration to determine their reproducibility for medical evaluation.

Microstructural changes caused by thermal treatment and their effects on mechanical properties of a gamma/gamma prime - delta eutectic alloy

Microstructural changes due to thermal treatments of a directionally solidified gamma/gamma'-delta eutectic alloy were investigated. Aging treatments of 8 to 48 hours and ranging from 750 to 1120 C were given to the alloy in both its as directionally solidified condition and after gamma' solutioning. Aging resulted in gamma' coarsening gamma precipitates in delta, and delta and gamma'' precipitates in delta. The tensile strength was increased about 12 percent at temperatures up to 900 C by a heat treatment. Times to rupture were essentially the same or greater than for as directionally solidified material. Tensile and rupture ductility in the growth direction of the alloy were reduced by the heat treatment.

The delta-Eddington approximation for radiative flux transfer

Simple approximations, like the Eddington, are often incapable of coping with the highly asymmetric phase functions typical of particulate scattering. A simple yet accurate method called the delta-Eddington approximation is proposed for determining monochromatic radiative fluxes in an absorbing-scattering atmosphere. In this method, the governing phase function is approximated by a Dirac delta function forward scatter peak and a two-term expansion of the phase function. The fraction of scattering into the truncated forward peak is taken proportional to the square of the phase function asymmetry factor, which distinguishes the delta-Eddington approximation from others of similar nature. The transmission, reflection, and absorption predicted by the delta-Eddington approximation are compared with doubling method calculations for realistic ranges of optical depth, single-scattering albedo, surface albedo, sun angle and asymmetry factor. The approximation is shown to provide an accurate and analytically simple parameterization of radiation to replace the empirism currently encountered in many general circulation and climate models.

Round-Trip Missions to Low-Delta-V Asteroids and Implications for Material Retrieval

Low-delta-V asteroids are to be found among those which have perihelia near 1 AU. From the 50 known asteroids with perihelia less than 1.5 AU, 10 candidates for asteroid retrieval missions were selected on the basis of low eccentricity and inclination. To estimate the ranges of orbital elements for which capture in earth orbit may be feasible, a survey was made of 180 deg transfer from a set of orbits having elements near those of the earth to the earth. For 2 of the 10 low-delta-V asteroids and for an additional one with elements more earth-like than any yet known, direct ballistic round trips in the 1980's were computed. A stay time of several months at the asteroid was used. The results show that the total delta V, including that for rendezvous with earth upon return, for the known asteroids is above 14 km/sec. But if asteroids are found similar to the strawman considered, the total delta V could be as low as 10 km/sec.

Effectiveness of leading-edge vortex flaps on 60 and 75 degree delta wings

A series of wind tunnel tests were run on 60 and 75 deg sweep delta wings to examine the effectiveness of leading-edge vortex flaps. Tests results showed that leading-edge vortex flaps are effective in giving large increases in lift-to-drag ratio and decreases in drag over a wide range of angle of attack. Tests on inverted flaps on the 60 deg delta wing showed substantial increases in lift and drag and may indicate a possibility of using inverted flaps on delta wings in the landing portion of flight. The 60 deg data were compared with that for a 75 deg sweep delta wing confirming that leading-edge vortex flap effectiveness is stronger as sweep is increased. Pitching moment effects due to vortex flaps use were also examined.

Experiences in Delta mission planning

The Delta launch vehicle has experienced 153 successful launches since 1960 and 40 more are scheduled. Relying on up-to-date technology and proven flight hardware, the Delta vehicle has been used for low to high circular and geosynchronous transfer orbits, high elliptic probes, and lunar and planetary missions. A history of Delta launches and configuration modifications is presented, noting a 92-95% success rate and its cost effective role in reimbursable missions. Elements of mission planning such as feasibility studies (1-3 yrs), spacecraft restraints manuals, reference trajectories, preliminary mission analysis, detailed test objectives, range/safety studies, guided nominal trajectory, and mission specific studies are discussed. Trajectory shaping determines vehicle and spacecraft restraints, optimizes the trajectory, and maximizes the payload capabilities. Improvements in the Delta vehicle have boosted payloads from 100 to 2890 lbs., improving the price per pound ratio, as costs have risen, only by a factor of three. Current launch schedules extend well into 1985.

Carbon isotopic ratios in some low-delta N-15 lunar breccias

Lunar soil breccias 10018, 79035 and 79135 were analyzed for carbon and nitrogen contents and isotopic compositions by vacuum pyrolysis, with a 500 C pre-combustion step in some cases. The combustion was used to remove carbon of terrestrial origin. Nitrogen isotopic ratios for the breccias are very low and are in agreement with results in the literature. Nitrogen yields in two cases were lower than literature values, a result attributable to heterogeneous mixing of implanted and implantation-free components in the breccias. Carbon isotopic ratios were found to be low in these breccias, even when reasonable account is taken of terrestrial carbon contamination. The results are consistent with the idea that low-delta N-15 values in lunar soils and breccias are accompanied by low-delta C-13 values, and imply that any secular variation which occurred in the delta N-15 of nitrogen implanted in lunar soils was accompanied by a similar but smaller variation in the delta C-13 of implanted carbon.

On the origin of delta spots

Mount Wilson sunspot drawings from 1966 through 1980 were used in conjunction with H-alpha filtergrams from Big Bear Solar Observatory to examine the origin of delta spots, spots with bipolar umbrae within one penumbra. Of the six cases studied, five were formed by the union of non-paired spots. They are either shoved into one another by two neighboring growing bipoles or by a new spot borne piggy-back style on an existing spot of opposite polarity. Proper motions of the growing spots take on curvilinear paths around one another to avoid a collision. This is the shear motion observed in delta spots (Tanaka, 1979). In the remaining case, the delta spot was formed by spots that emerged as a pair. The findings indicate no intrinsic differences in the formation or the behavior between delta spots and spots of normal magnetic configuration.

Secular solution for delta-V during spin rate change maneuvers of rigid body spacecraft

Analytic expressions have been found for Euler's Equations of Motion and for the Eulerian Angles for both symmetric and near symmetric rigid bodies under the influence of arbitrary constant body-fixed torques. These solutions have been used to solve for the secular terms in the translational delta-V equations in inertial space. This secular delta-V solution is of interest in application to spinning spacecraft in that it describes the average direction of the delta-V of the spacecraft during a spin-up maneuver. Numerical integration of the governing differential equations has verified that the secular delta-V solution is valid for large time and is accurate in many physical situations including spin-up maneuvers of the Galileo spacecraft.

Experimental transonic flutter characteristics of two 72 deg-sweep delta-wing models

Transonic flutter boundaries are presented for two simple, 72 deg. sweep, low-aspect-ratio wing models. One model was an aspect-ratio 0.65 delta wing; the other model was an aspect-ratio 0.54 clipped-delta wing. Flutter boundaries for the delta wing are presented for the Mach number range of 0.56 to 1.22. Flutter boundaries for the clipped-delta wing are presented for the Mach number range of 0.72 to 0.95. Selected vibration characteristics of the models are also presented.

SME observations of O2(1 Delta g) nightglow - An assessment of the chemical production mechanisms

Solar Mesosphere Explorer (SME) observations of the 3 a.m. 1.27 micron nightglow at 45 N latitude are reported. From the deduced volume emission rates, the O2(a 1 Delta g) nighttime production rates for the 80-100 km altitude range are derived. Utilizing the mean SME-acquired 3 p.m. ozone profile for the same latitude and time period and an updated photochemical model, nighttime O, O3, H, OH, HO2, and H2O2 profiles are determined. These are used in calculating the rates of reactions which are sufficiently exothermic to produce O2(1 Delta) or excited states of OH or HO2, which could transfer their energy to O2 to form O2(1 Delta). Yields of O2(1 Delta) based on published laboratory and observational studies are used to find that the sum of two reaction sequences can approximate the SME measurements: (1) O + O + M and (2) H + O3 followed by OH-asterisk + O2.

A Probable Approx. 2400 Year Solar Quasi-cycle in Atmospheric Delta C-14

A 2200 to 2600 year quasi-periodicity is present in atmospheric delta C-14 records after removal of long-term trends due to the geomagnetic dipole amplitude variation. This periodicity consists of both a long-term variation of the mean and a superposed, approximately recurring pattern of century-scale variations. The strongest of these latter variations occur near maxima of the approx. 2400 year delta C-14 cycles. The residual record can be modeled to first order as an amplitude modulation of a century-scale periodic forcing function by a approx. 2400 year periodic forcing function. During the last millennium, the largest century-scale variations (occurring near the most recent 2400 year delta C-14 maximum) are known to be mainly a consequence of the pronounced Maunder, Sporer, and Wolf solar activity minima, as verified by independent proxy solar activity records. Therefore, during this period, amplitude modulation has been occurring primarily in the sun and not in the terrestrial radiocarbon system. It is therefore inferred that the approx. 2400 year forcing function is mainly solar although some secondary terrestrial feedback into the delta C-14 record is likely. This conclusion has implications for the predictability of future pronounced solar activity minima and for the interpretation of certain minor Holocene climatic variations.

Streamwise vorticity generation and mixing enhancement in free jets by delta-tabs

The effect of triangular tabs, placed at the nozzle exit, on the evolution of free jets is investigated. The effect, a large distortion of the jet cross section and a resultant increase in mixing downstream, has been inferred before to be due to a pair of streamwise vortices originating from each tab. In this paper, the generation mechanism of the stream wise vorticity (omega sub x) is considered first. Two sources are postulated. One is the upstream 'pressure hill', produced by the tab, which appears to be the dominant source. Another is due to vortex filaments shed from the sides of the tab and reoriented downstream by the mean shear of the mixing layer. In the case of a 'delta-tab', a triangular tab with its apex leaning downstream, vorticity from the two sources explain the stronger effect in that configuration. Data on the vorticity evolution for the effect of two delta-tabs are presented, up to twelve jet diameters from the exit, which show that the streamwise vortices persist even at the farthest measurement station. The magnitude of omega sub x-maximum decays continually with distance from the nozzle, its ratio to azimuthal vorticity maximum is found to be about 1/5 everywhere. The relative effect of a delta-tab on jets from an axisymmetric nozzle and a 8:1 rectangular nozzle is also studied. The mixing layer distortion is found to be less pronounced in the rectangular case. The jet mixing, as manifested by the mass flux measured at a downstream station, is increased in the axisymmetric jet but it is decreased in the rectangular jet under consideration by the delta-tab.

Applications and development of communication models for the touchstone GAMMA and DELTA prototypes

The goal of this project was to develop models of the interconnection networks of the Intel iPSC/860 and DELTA multicomputers to guide the design of efficient algorithms for interprocessor communication in problems that commonly occur in CFD codes and other applications. Interprocessor communication costs of codes for message-passing architectures such as the iPSC/860 and DELTA significantly affect the level of performance that can be obtained from those machines. This project addressed several specific problems in the achievement of efficient communication on the Intel iPSC/860 hypercube and DELTA mesh. In particular, an efficient global processor synchronization algorithm was developed for the iPSC/860 and numerous broadcast algorithms were designed for the DELTA.

Three-dimensional aerodynamic shape optimization of supersonic delta wings

A recently developed three-dimensional aerodynamic shape optimization procedure AeSOP(sub 3D) is described. This procedure incorporates some of the most promising concepts from the area of computational aerodynamic analysis and design, specifically, discrete sensitivity analysis, a fully implicit 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methodology, and 3D Bezier-Bernstein surface parameterizations. The new procedure is demonstrated in the preliminary design of supersonic delta wings. Starting from a symmetric clipped delta wing geometry, a Mach 1.62 asymmetric delta wing and two Mach 1. 5 cranked delta wings were designed subject to various aerodynamic and geometric constraints.
