Measurement of Υ production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5 TeV

The production cross-sections of Υ mesons, namely Υ(1S), Υ(2S) and Υ(3S), in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5 TeV are measured with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.13 ± 0.18 pb –1 collected by the LHCb detector. The Υ mesons are reconstructed in the decay mode Υ → μ + μ – . Double differential cross-sections times branching fractions, as functions of the transverse momentum p T and the rapidity y of the Υ mesons, are measured in the range p T < 20 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5. The results integrated over these p T and y ranges are $\sigma \left(\textrm{Y}(1S)\right)\times \mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{Y}(1S)\to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)=2101\pm 33\pm 83\ \textrm{pb},$ $\sigma \left(\textrm{Y}(2S)\right)\times \mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{Y}(2S)\to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)=526\pm 20\pm 21\ \textrm{pb},$ $\sigma \left(\textrm{Y}(3S)\right)\times \mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{Y}(3S)\to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)=242\pm 16\pm 10\ \textrm{pb},$ where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The ratios of cross-sections between measurements of two different Υ states and between measurements at different centre-of-mass energies are determined. The nuclear modification factor of Υ(1S) at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5 TeV is updated as well using the directly measured cross-section results from this analysis.

Search for CP violation in t$\overline{\textrm{t}}$H and tH production in multilepton channels in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The charge-parity (CP) structure of the Yukawa interaction between the Higgs (H) boson and the top quark is measured in a data sample enriched in the t$\overline{t}$H and tH associated production, using 138 fb -1 of data collected in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The study targets events where the H boson decays via H → WW or H → ττ and the top quarks decay via t → Wb: the W bosons decay either leptonically or hadronically, and final states characterized by the presence of at least two leptons are studied. Machine learning techniques are applied to these final states to enhance the separation of CP -even from CP -odd scenarios. Two-dimensional confidence regions are set on $κ$ t and $\widetilde{k}$t, which are respectively defined as the CP -even and CP -odd top-Higgs Yukawa coupling modifiers. No significant fractional CP -odd contributions, parameterized by the quantity |$f^{Htt}_{CP}$| are observed; the parameter is determined to be |$f^{Htt}_{CP}$| = 0.59 with an interval of (0.24, 0.81) at 68% confidence level. The results are combined with previous results covering the H → ZZ and H → γγ decay modes, yielding two- and one-dimensional confidence regions on $κ$ t and $\widetilde{k}$t, while |$f^{Htt}_{CP}$| is determined to be |$f^{Htt}_{CP}$| = 0.28 with an interval of |$f^{Htt}_{CP}$| < 0.55 at 68% confidence level, in agreement with the standard model CP -even prediction of |$f^{Htt}_{CP}$| = 0.

Search for lepton-flavor-violating ${\tau }^{-}\to {{\ell}}^{-}{K}_{s}^{0}$ decays at Belle and Belle II

We present the results of a search for charged-lepton-flavor violating decays ${\tau }^{-}\to {{\ell}}^{-}{K}_{s}^{0}$, where ℓ − is either an electron or a muon. We combine e + e − data samples recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider (428 fb −1 ) with samples recorded by the Belle experiment at the KEKB collider (980 fb −1 ) to obtain a sample of 1.3 billion e + e − → τ + τ − events. We observe 0 and 1 events and set 90% confidence level upper limits of 0.8 × 10 −8 and 1.2 × 10 −8 on the branching fractions of the decay modes ${\tau }^{-}\to {e}^{-}{K}_{S}^{0}$ and ${\tau }^{-}\to {\mu }^{-}{K}_{S}^{0}$, respectively. These are the most stringent upper limits to date.

Search for a resonance decaying to a W boson and a photon in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV using leptonic W boson decays

A search for a new charged particle X with mass between 0.3 and 2.0 TeV decaying to a W boson and a photon is presented, using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Particle X has electric charge $\pm$ 1 and is assumed to have spin 0. The search is performed using the electron and muon decays of the W boson. No significant excess above the predicted background is observed. The upper limit at 95% confidence level on the product of the production cross section of the X and its branching fraction to a W boson and a photon is found to be 94 (137) fb for a 0.3 TeV resonance and 0.75 (0.81) fb for a 2.0 TeV resonance, for an X width-to-mass ratio of 0.01% (5%). This search presents the most stringent constraints to date on the existence of such resonances across the probed mass range. A statistical combination with an earlier study based on the hadronic decay mode of the W boson is also performed, and the upper limit at 95% confidence level for a 2.0 TeV resonance is reduced to 0.50 (0.63) fb for an X width-to-mass ratio of 0.01% (5%).

Measurements of the pp → W ± γγ and pp → Zγγ cross sections at $ \sqrt{\mathrm{s}} $ = 13 TeV and limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings

The cross section for W or Z boson production in association with two photons is measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb -1 collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The W → ℓν and Z → ℓℓ decay modes (where ℓ = e, μ) are used to extract the Wγγ and Zγγ cross sections in a phase space defined by electron (muon) with transverse momentum larger than 30 GeV and photon transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV. All leptons and photons are required to have absolute pseudorapidity smaller than 2.5. The measured cross sections in this phase space are σ(Wγγ) = ${13.6}_{-1.9}^{+1.9}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-4.0}^{+4.0}$ (syst) ± 0.08 (PDF + scale) fb and σ(Zγγ) = ${5.41}_{-0.55}^{+0.58}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-.070}^{+0.64}$(syst) ± 0.06 (PDF + scale) fb. Limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings are set in the framework of an effective field theory with dimension-8 operators.

Observation of muonic Dalitz decays of chib mesons and precise spectroscopy of hidden-beauty states

The decays of the χb1 (1P), χb2 (1P), χb1 (2P) and χb2 (2P) mesons into the Υ(1S)μ + μ − final state are observed with a high significance using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb −1 . The newly observed decays together with the Υ(2S) → Υ(1S)π + π − and Υ(3S) → Υ(2S)π+π− decay modes are used for precision measurements of the mass and mass splittings for the hidden-beauty states.

Measurements and interpretations of W ± Z production cross-sections in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

Measurements of integrated and differential cross-sections for W ± Z production in proton-proton collisions are presented. The data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider from 2015 to 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb −1 . The W ± Z candidate events are reconstructed using leptonic decay modes of the gauge bosons into electrons or muons. The integrated cross-section per lepton flavour for the production of W ± Z is measured in the detector fiducial region with a relative precision of 4%. The measured value is compared with the Standard Model prediction at a precision of up to next-to-next-to-leading-order in QCD and next-to-leading-order in electroweak. Cross-sections for W + Z and W − Z production and their ratio are presented. The W ± Z production is also measured differentially as functions of various kinematic variables, including new observables sensitive to CP-violation effects. All measurements are compared with state-of-the-art Standard Model predictions from fixed-order calculations or Monte Carlo generators based on next-to-leading-order matrix elements interfaced with parton showers. An effective field theory interpretation of the measurements is performed, considering both CP-conserving and CP-violating dimension-6 operators modifying the W ± Z production. In the absence of observed deviations from the Standard Model, limits on CP-conserving Wilson coefficients are extracted using the transverse mass of the W ± Z system. For CP-violating coefficients a machine learning approach is used to construct an observable with enhanced sensitivity to CP-violation effects.

Search for the doubly charmed baryon $ {\varXi}_{cc}^{+} $ in the $ {\varXi}_c^{+}{\pi}^{-}{\pi}^{+} $ final state

A search for the doubly charmed baryon $ {\varXi}_{cc}^{+} $ is performed in the $ {\varXi}_c^{+}{\pi}^{-}{\pi}^{+} $ invariant-mass spectrum, where the $ {\varXi}_c^{+} $ baryon is reconstructed in the pK - π + final state. The study uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at a centre- of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb -1 . No significant signal is observed in the invariant-mass range of 3.4–3.8 GeV/ c 2 . Upper limits are set on the ratio of branching fractions multiplied by the production cross-section with respect to the $ {\varXi}_{cc}^{++} $ →( $ {\varXi}_c^{+} $ → pK - π + ) π + decay for different $ {\varXi}_{cc}^{+} $ mass and lifetime hypotheses in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and the transverse momentum range from 2.5 to 25 GeV/ c . The results from this search are combined with a previously published search for the $ {\varXi}_{cc}^{+} $ → $ {\varLambda}_c^{+} $ K - π + decay mode, yielding a maximum local significance of 4.0 standard deviations around the mass of 3620 MeV/ c 2 , including systematic uncertainties. Taking into account the look-elsewhere effect in the 3.5–3.7 GeV/ c 2 mass window, the combined global significance is 2.9 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties.

Proton decay from quark and lepton compositeness

Within a chiral SU(15) gauge theory in which the Standard Model fermions are bound states of massless preons, we show that proton-decay operators are likely induced at the compositeness scale, Λ pre . Our estimate of the limit imposed by searches for proton decays is Λ pre > 10 4 TeV 1/2 $C^{1/4}_{8} m^{1/2}_{Q}$, where C 8 is a rescaled coefficient of an 8-prebaryon operator induced by SU(15) dynamics, and m Q is the mass of a composite vectorlike quark. The latter has a lower limit related to the mass of a composite vectorlike lepton, which in turn is required by LHC searches to be above 1 TeV. For C 8 in the 10 –5 – 1 range, the lower limit on Λ pre varies between 3 × 10 3 TeV and 5 × 10 4 TeV. We point out that exotic proton decay modes, into a π + and a heavy right-handed neutrino, could be observed using the Super-Kamiokande or DUNE detectors.

Nuclear Data Sheets for A=64

The evaluated experimental data are presented and evaluated for 13 known nuclides of mass 64 (Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, As, Se). For each nuclide, the best values combining all available data are recommended for spectroscopic properties. No excited states have been identified in 64 Ti, 64 As, and 64 Se. Only one excited state in 64 V as an isomer, and three in 64 Cr have been identified. Data for excited states in 64 Mn, 64 Fe, and 64 Co remain limited. 64 Ni, 64 Cu, and 64 Zn are the most studied nuclides through various reactions and decays, followed by 64 Ga and 64 Ge. In the opinion of the evaluators, there are several incomplete or discrepant aspects of the high-spin portion of the level scheme for 64 Zn above ≈5 MeV excitation which need to be resolved in further experiments using large γ-detector arrays. The decay schemes of 64 Ti β - , 64 As ε and 64 Se ε are unknown, while very little information is available for 64 V β - and 64 Cr β - . The decay schemes of 64 Mn β - , 64 Fe β - , 64 Co β - and 64Ge ε are somewhat better known, but still considered incomplete by evaluators. The decay scheme of 64 Ga ε decay is known in detail, however there is the possibility of additional levels populated above 4713 keV, as the Q(ε) value is 7171 keV. The β - , β + and ε decay modes of 64 Cu are well known, as this radionuclide is of great importance in applications, for example, as a dosimeter for neutron flux determination in nuclear reactors, and as a radiopharmaceutical for positron emission tomography (PET). This work supersedes earlier full evaluations of A=64 by 2007Si04, 1996Si12, 1991Si03, 1979Ha35 and 1974Au04.

Neutron detection efficiency of the Neutron dEtector with Xn Tracking (NEXT)

An efficient neutron detection system with good energy resolution is required to correctly characterize decays of neutron-rich nuclei where β-delayed neutron emission is a dominant decay mode. The Neutron dEtector with Xn Tracking (NEXT) has been designed to measure β-delayed neutron emitters. By segmenting the detector along the neutron flight path, NEXT reduces the associated uncertainties in neutron time-of-flight measurements, improving energy resolution while maintaining detection efficiency. Detector prototypes are comprised of optically separated segments of a neutron-gamma discriminating plastic scintillator coupled to position-sensitive photomultiplier tubes. In this work we discuss how the first performance studies of this detector showed that high intrinsic neutron detection efficiency could be achieved while retaining good energy resolution. The results from the efficiency measurements using neutrons from direct reactions are presented

Search for e → τ charged lepton flavor violation at the EIC with the ECCE detector

The recently approved Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) will provide a unique new opportunity for searches of charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) and other new physics scenarios. In contrast to the e ↔ μ CLFV transition for which very stringent limits exist, there is still a relatively large discovery space for the e → τ CLFV transition, potentially to be explored by the EIC. Here, with the latest detector design of ECCE (EIC Comprehensive Chromodynamics Experiment) and projected integral luminosity of the EIC, we find the τ-leptons created in the DIS process ep → τX are expected to be identified with high efficiency. A first ECCE simulation study, restricted to the 3-prong τ-decay mode and with limited statistics for the Standard Model backgrounds, estimates that the EIC will be able to improve the current exclusion limit on e → τ CLFV by an order of magnitude. As a result, the very high vertex resolution of the ECCE detector configuration plays a critical role in τ identification.

Search for singly and pair-produced leptoquarks coupling to third-generation fermions in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}$=13 TeV

A search for leptoquarks produced singly and in pairs in proton-proton collisions is presented. We consider the leptoquark (LQ) to be a scalar particle of charge -1/3e coupling to a top quark plus a tau lepton ( t τ ) or a bottom quark plus a neutrino ( b ν ), or a vector particle of charge +2/3e, coupling to t ν or b τ . These choices are motivated by models that can explain a series of anomalies observed in the measurement of B meson decays. In this analysis the signatures t τ ν b and t τ ν are probed, using data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC at s = 13 TeV and that correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb -1 . These signatures have not been previously explored in a dedicated search. The data are found to be in agreement with the standard model prediction. Lower limits at 95% confidence level are set on the LQ mass in the range 0.98–1.73 TeV, depending on the LQ spin and its coupling λ to a lepton and a quark, and assuming equal couplings for the two LQ decay modes considered. These are the most stringent constraints to date on the existence of leptoquarks in this scenario.

Observation of gauge boson joint-polarisation states in W ± Z production from pp collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Measurements of joint-polarisation states of W and Z gauge bosons in W ± Z production are presented. The data set used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 of proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The W ± Z candidate events are reconstructed using leptonic decay modes of the gauge bosons into electrons and muons. The simultaneous pair-production of longitudinally polarised vector bosons is measured for the first time with a significance of 7.1 standard deviations. The measured joint helicity fractions integrated over the fiducial region are $f$ 00 = 0.067 ± 0.010, $f$ 0T = 0.110 ± 0.029, $f$ T0 = 0.179 ± 0.023 and $f$ TT = 0.644 ± 0.032, in agreement with the next-to-leading-order Standard Model predictions. Individual helicity fractions of the W and Z bosons are also measured and found to be consistent with joint helicity fractions within the expected amounts of correlation. Both the joint and individual helicity fractions are also measured separately in W + Z and W - Z events. Inclusive and differential cross sections for several kinematic observables sensitive to polarisation are presented.

First measurement of polarized spin-density matrix elements and differential cross sections dσ/dt in ω photoproduction off the proton for 2.7 < Eγ < 5.2 GeV using CLAS at Jefferson Lab

We report on the differential cross sections dσ/dt, the unpolarized spin-density matrix elements ρ 00 0 , ρ 1 − 1 0 , Re ρ 10 0 , and the first extraction of the polarized elements Im ρ 10 3 , Im ρ 1 − 1 3 for the reaction γp → pω using the CLAS spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. The ω mesons were detected in their dominant charged decay mode, ω → π + π − π 0 , and all t-dependent results are presented in a fine binning for incident photon energies between 2.73 and 5.16 GeV (corresponding to the center-of-mass energy range W ∈ [ 2.45, 3.25 ] GeV). All matrix elements are first measurements for − t > 0.6 GeV2. Moreover, differential cross sections dσ/d(cos Θ c . m . ω ) and the corresponding angle-dependent unpolarized spin-density matrix elements in the Adair frame are presented for the incident photon energy range 1.56–3.80 GeV (corresponding to W ∈ [ 1.95, 2.83 ] GeV). These new ω photoproduction data are consistent with earlier CLAS results but extend the energy range well beyond the nucleon resonance region into the Regge regime. The comparison with Regge-theory-based model predictions shows that the new data impose more stringent constraints on our understanding of ω photoproduction.

Observation of $\gamma\gamma\to\tau\tau$ in proton-proton collisions and limits on the anomalous electromagnetic moments of the $\tau$ lepton

The production of a pair of τ leptons via photon–photon fusion, ${{\unicode{x03B3}\unicode{x03B3}\to\unicode{x03C4}\unicode{x03C4}}}$, is observed for the first time in proton–proton collisions, with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations. This observation is based on a data set recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. Events with a pair of τ leptons produced via photon–photon fusion are selected by requiring them to be back-to-back in the azimuthal direction and to have a minimum number of charged hadrons associated with their production vertex. The τ leptons are reconstructed in their leptonic and hadronic decay modes. The measured fiducial cross section of ${{\unicode{x03B3}\unicode{x03B3}\to\unicode{x03C4}\unicode{x03C4}}}$ is $\sigma^\text{fid}_\text{obs} = 12.4 ^{+3.8}_{-3.1}\,\textrm{fb}$. Constraints are set on the contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment (${a_{\unicode{x03C4}}}$) and electric dipole moments (${d_{\unicode{x03C4}}}$) of the τ lepton originating from potential effects of new physics on the $\unicode{x03B3}\unicode{x03C4}\unicode{x03C4}$ vertex: ${a_{\unicode{x03C4}}} = 0.0009_{-0.0031}^{+0.0032}$ and $|{d_{\unicode{x03C4}}}| \lt 2.9\times 10^{-17}\,{e}\,\textrm{cm}$ (95% confidence level), consistent with the standard model.
