Free Drifting Buoys

Information was exchanged between people directly involved with the development, use, and/or potential use of free drifting buoys. Tracking systems and techniques, where methods and accuracy of optical, radio, radar, satellite, and sonic tracking of free-drifting buoys were discussed. Deployment and retrieval covering methods currently used or planned in the deployment and retrieval of free-drifting buoys from boats, ships, helicopters, fixed platforms, and fixed-wing aircraft were reported. Simulation, sensors, and data emphasizing the status of water circulation modeling, and sensors useful on free-drifting buoys, and data display and analysis were described.

Effects of particle drifts on the solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays

Gradient and curvature drifts in an Archimedean-spiral magnetic field are shown to produce a significant effect on the modulation of galactic cosmic rays by the solar wind. The net modulation, heliocentric radial gradient, and average energy change of particles which reach the inner solar system are significantly reduced. The effects of drifts are due to the fact that cosmic rays for which the drift velocity is comparable to the wind velocity or larger, have more rapid access to the inner solar system than in the absence of drifts.

Pitch angle dispersion of drifting energetic protons at synchronous orbit

The time of arrival at ATS 6 of substorm-associated energetic proton flux enhancements has been examined as a function of both energy and pitch angle by using electron-proton spectrometer data. The protons exhibit energy dispersion with the particles with the highest energy arriving first. This has generally been interpreted as evidence that these particles have gradient- and curvature-drifted to the spacecraft from an acceleration region on the nightside. In the evening quadrant, proton enhancements at 90 deg pitch angle arrived at the spacecraft prior to those at small pitch angles. However, on the dayside the increase occurs first at the smallest pitch angle (about 30 degrees). The difference between the arrival times of the 30 deg and 90 deg protons increases for more westward local times. For the highest energy range observed, drifting protons are rarely seen at large pitch angles. These observations place severe restrictions on the simple drift models. Since the pitch angle dependence of the particle drift velocity is a field geometric quantity, the observations require the modification of present magnetospheric magnetic field models. In particular, the models need to reproduce better the enhanced field observed on the dayside near synchronous orbit.

Density drift instabilities and weak collisions

A model is developed which describes the effects of weak collisions on the linear kinetic theory of electrostatic density drift instabilities. A dispersion equation valid at all frequencies and wave numbers is derived using the assumptions of a weak, uniform density gradient; a uniform magnetic field; and the BGK collision operator with a modification of the local approximation. The properties of the universal and collisional density drift instabilities at maximum growth rates are examined in detail. The thresholds of the instabilities are examined for an ionospheric model which includes ion-neutral, electron-neutral, and electron-ion collisions, and are compared with the threshold of the lower hybrid density drift instability. It is concluded that the k to the -5th short wavelength density power spectra observed above 280 km in the PLUMEX experiment are due to the effects of the universal density drift instability.

Notes on drift theory

It is shown that there is a simpler way to derive the average guiding center drift of a distribution of particles than via the so-called single particle analysis. Based on this derivation it is shown that the entire drift formalism can be considerably simplified, and that results for low order anisotropies are more generally valid than is usually appreciated. This drift analysis leads to a natural alternative derivation of the drift velocity along a neutral sheet.

Does the geoid drift west?

In 1970 Hide and Malin noted a correlation of about 0.8 between the geoid and the geomagnetic potential at the Earth's surface when the latter is rotated eastward in longitude by about 160 degrees and the spherical harmonic expansions of both functions are truncated at degree 4. From a century of magnetic observatory data, Hide and Malin inferred an average magnetic westward drift rate of about 0.27 degrees/year. They attributed the magnetic-gravitational correlation to a core event at about 1350 A.D. which impressed the mantle's gravity pattern at long wavelengths onto the core motion and the resulting magnetic field. The impressed pattern was then carried westward 160 degrees by the nsuing magnetic westward drift. An alternative possibility is some sort of steady physical coupling between the magnetic and gravitational fields (perhaps migration of Hide's bumps on the core-mantle interface). This model predicts that the geoid will drift west at the magnetic rate. On a rigid earth, the resulting changes in sea level would be easily observed, but they could be masked by adjustment of the mantle if it has a shell with viscosity considerably less than 10 to the 21 poise. However, steady westward drift of the geoid also predicts secular changes in g, the local acceleration of gravity, at land stations. These changes are now ruled out by recent independent high-accuracy absolute measurements of g made by several workers at various locations in the Northern Hemisphere.

High pressure gas scintillation drift chambers with wave-shifter fiber readout. II

Results from a prototype high-pressure xenon gas scintillation drift chamber using a novel wave-shifter fiber readout scheme are presented. The primary scintillation light yield was measured to be one photon per 76 + or - 12 eV deposited energy. Initial results on the chamber are presented for two-interaction separation (less than 4 mm in the drift direction and about 7 mm orthogonal to the drift); for position resolution (less than 400 microns rms in the plane orthogonal to the drift direction); and for energy resolution (less than 6 percent FWHM at 122 keV).

The ionospheric signatures of rapid subauroral ion drifts

Subauroral ion drifts (SAID) are latitudinally narrow regions of rapid westward ion drift located in the evening sector and centered on the equatorward edge of the diffuse aurora. Observations of SAID, as identified by the ion drift meters on the Atmosphere Explorer C and Dynamics Explorer B spacecraft, are utilized to determine their effect on the F region ion composition, their relationship to the midlatitude trough, and their temporal evolution. At altitudes near the F peak, a deep ionization trough is formed in regions of large ion drift where the O(+) concentration is considerably depleted and the NO(+) concentration is enhanced, while at higher altitudes the trough signature is considerably mitigated or even absent. SAID have been observed to last longer than 30 min but less than 3 hours, and their latitudinal width often becomes narrower as time progresses. The plasma flows westward equatorward of the SAID and becomes more westward as invariant latitude increases. Poleward of the SAID, the flow is, on average, westward throughout the auroral zone in the evening, while near midnight it becomes eastward.

The drift of Saturn's north polar spot observed by the Hubble Space Telescope

Polar projections of 50 images of Saturn at 889 nanometers and 25 images at 718 nanometers taken by the HST in November 1990, as well as three images at each wavelength taken in June 1991, have been examined. Among them, 31 show the north polar spot, which is associated with Saturn's polar hexagon, in locations suitable for measurement. The movement of the spot with respect to Saturn's system III rotation rate was studied. During the period of observation, the polar spot had first a short-term westward movement and then a long-term eastward drift. The rate of the long-term drift was -0.060 +/- 0.008 deg/day with respect to system III, approximately 50 percent greater than previously determined from Voyager. The original 1980 and 1981 Voyager data were combined with the new Hubble images to form an 11-yr baseline. The eastward drift over the longer period was -0.0569 degrees per day. The long-term drift could be due to uncertainty in the standard value of the internal rotation period. The short-term movement in November 1990 has a rate that is greater in magnitude but opposite in sign and probably represents a real, transient motion of the spot relative to the internal rotation system.

The simulation of complete 11 and 12 year modulation cycles for cosmic rays in the heliosphere using a drift model with global merged interaction regions

Two-dimensional, time-dependent drift models have done exceptionally well in explaining major modulation features, especially during the A less than 0 magnetic polarity cycle of the heliospheric magnetic field when positively charge particles are drifting in along the heliospheric neutral sheet (HNS). These models were found to do well when the heliospheric 'tilt angles' alpha less than approximately 30 deg (le Roux & Potgeiter). However, they seem to do less well when alpha greater than approximately 30 deg during A less than 0 cycles seem to fail when this happens in A greater than 0 cycles. Progress was made in understanding these phases of the modulation cycle when merged interaction regions (MIRs) were incorporated in time-dependent drift models (Potgieter et al.). It was also explicitly shown that in obtaining large step decreases in cosmic rays, the MIRs had to be global, i.e., having a latitudinal extent of more than approximately 60 deg. Other classes of MIRs, such as local MIRs and co-rotating MIRs were found to be of secondary importance for establishing long-term modulation. In a previous paper we studied the effects of two consecutive, identical global MIRs, together with a changing wavy HNS, on long-term modulation (Potegieter & le Roux). This approach gave a very natural and convincing explanation for the observed step decreases in cosmic-ray modulation. Emphasis was placed in the declining and recovery phases of the 11 yr modulation cycle. In this paper, four consecutive, nonidentical global MIRs, in combination with a varying wavy HNS, were included in our time-dependent drift model in order to do simulations closer to what was observed between 1977 and 1987. By doing this we could model, for the first time, complete 11 and 22 yr cycles in the heliospheric modulation of galactic cosmic-rays, including the solar magnetic polarity reversals.

The Electron Drift Technique for Measuring Electric and Magnetic Fields

The electron drift technique is based on sensing the drift of a weak beam of test electrons that is caused by electric fields and/or gradients in the magnetic field. These quantities can, by use of different electron energies, in principle be determined separately. Depending on the ratio of drift speed to magnetic field strength, the drift velocity can be determined either from the two emission directions that cause the electrons to gyrate back to detectors placed some distance from the emitting guns, or from measurements of the time of flight of the electrons. As a by-product of the time-of-flight measurements, the magnetic field strength is also determined. The paper describes strengths and weaknesses of the method as well as technical constraints.

Instrument Drift Uncertainties and the Long-Term TOMS/SBUV Total Ozone Record

Long-term climate records from satellites are often constructed from the measurements of a sequence of instruments launched at different times. Each of these instruments is calibrated prior to launch. After launch they are subjected to potential offsets and slow drifts in calibration. We illustrate these issues in the construction of a merged total ozone record from two TOMS and three SBUV instruments. This record extends from late 1978 through the present. The question is "How good are these records?". We have examined the uncertainty in determining the relative calibration of two instruments during an overlap period in their measurements. When comparing a TOMS instrument, such as that on Nimbus 7, with an SBUV instrument, also on Nimbus 7, we find systematic differences and random differences. We have combined these findings with estimates of individual instrument drift into a monte- carlo uncertainty propagation model. We estimate an instrument drift uncertainty of a little larger than 1 percent per decade over the 25-year history of the TOMS/SBUV measurements. We make an independent estimate of the drift uncertainty in the ground-based network of total ozone measurements and find it to be of similar, but slightly smaller magnitude. The implications of these uncertainties for trend and recovery determination will be discussed.

Determining the Sun's Deep Meridional Flow Speed Using Active Latitude Drift Rates Since 1874

Dynamo models that incorporate a deep meridional return flow indicate that this flow regulates both the period and the amplitude of the sunspot cycle. We recently examined the equatorward drift of the active latitudes (as given by the centroid of the sunspot areas in each hemisphere) and found evidence supporting this view. In those studies we fit the equatorward drift in each hemisphere for each sunspot cycle with a simple parabola - giving us a drift rate and its deceleration for each hemisphere/cycle. Here we analyze the same data (the Royal Greenwich Observatory/JSAF/NOAA daily active region summaries) to determine the drift rates in each hemisphere on a yearly basis (rotation-by- rotation measurements smoothed to remove high frequencies) and fit them with a simple model for the meridional flow that provides the meridional flow speed as a function of latitude and time from 1874 to 2005. These flow speeds can be used to test dynamo models - some of which have predictive capabilities.

Inertial orientation tracker having automatic drift compensation for tracking human head and other similarly sized body

A self contained sensor apparatus generates a signal that corresponds to at least two of the three orientational aspects of yaw, pitch and roll of a human-scale body, relative to an external reference frame. A sensor generates first sensor signals that correspond to rotational accelerations or rates of the body about certain body axes. The sensor may be mounted to the body. Coupled to the sensor is a signal processor for generating orientation signals relative to the external reference frame that correspond to the angular rate or acceleration signals. The first sensor signals are impervious to interference from electromagnetic, acoustic, optical and mechanical sources. The sensors may be rate sensors. An integrator may integrate the rate signal over time. A drift compensator is coupled to the rate sensors and the integrator. The drift compensator may include a gravitational tilt sensor or a magnetic field sensor or both. A verifier periodically measures the orientation of the body by a means different from the drift sensitive rate sensors. The verifier may take into account characteristic features of human motion, such as stillness periods. The drift compensator may be, in part, a Kalman filter, which may utilize statistical data about human head motion.
