Polarized target nuclear magnetic resonance measurements with deep neural networks

Continuous-wave Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (CW-NMR) operated in constant-current mode has served as a foundational technique for polarization measurement in solid-state dynamically polarized targets within nuclear and high-energy physics experiments for several decades, and it remains an essential tool. Conventional Q-meter-based phase-sensitive detection is critical for precise real-time determination of target polarization during scattering runs. However, the accuracy and reliability of these measurements are frequently compromised by elevated noise levels, baseline drift, and systematic uncertainties arising from signal isolation and fitting, ultimately degrading the overall experimental figure of merit. In this work, we report the first successful application of neural network architectures to continuous-wave NMR polarization metrology. By leveraging advanced machine learning techniques for signal extraction and denoising, we achieve a substantial reduction of fitting uncertainties under a variety of realistic simulated and experimental conditions. These improvements translate directly into more robust real-time (online) polarization monitoring and higher precision in subsequent offline analysis. By reducing analysis-induced uncertainty, the resulting methodology can improve the effective figure of merit for scattering experiments employing dynamically polarized targets and provides a new toolset for NMR-based polarimetry in high-energy and nuclear physics.

Northstar Mo100 Target Beam Spot Size Sensitivity Study

Northstar Mo100 target for production of the medical isotope Mo99 is particularly sensitive to beam over focusing because of the intended high power density. At 38 MeV and 6.32 mA (240 kW beam power, nominally 160 kW th in the target), small deviation from the nominal 12 mm FWHM beam can significantly increase the target disk temperatures and more importantly the load bearing target window temperature. A rhodotron will be the source of the electron beam to be used in the isotope production. This machine operates in a pulsed beam mode, currently expected to be at 50 Hz, which results in a 100 C temperature oscillation above and below the steady state temperature that is the focus of this study. This must be considered in the determination of minimum beam spot size that can be accepted by the target without risk of failure. In addition to the nominal beam spot size of 12 mm, the analysis of 10, 11 and 14.5 mm beam spot sizes are analyzed. The primary conclusion is that an over focused beam to just 11 mm FWHM is the minimum beam spot allowable, based on window temperature and the Ultimate Tensile Stress (UTS) of the window material Inconel 718 as a function of temperature. In contrast an under focused beam of 14.5 mm FWHM has much reduced target and window temperatures, but there is a resulting 6% drop in isotope production, all other factor staying the same. These results are presented herein.

Universal Battery Supercharger

During the course of the UBS project a dc-fast charger was developed to be used in off board high power charging stations. High efficiency is targeted to reduce the charging price for the consumer while reducing the charge time. In the meantime, the size of the converter is minimized so that it could be used in small spaces and potentially urban areas. The topology is modular, and the power level can be expanded for charging higher power vehicles like trucks and buses. During the course of this research several key technologies was developed in LESES that improve the performance of the power electronics system used in EV charger. Integrated magnetics was developed for DMCR to improve the power density as well as efficiency of the magnetic components which is one of the main bottlenecks of EV development. Triangular mode EV current conduction mode is using to perform soft switching (increase efficiency) without adding any new components to the existing topology. Passive and active damping are developed to suppress the interaction between grid and converter, stabilizing the control system. Further numerous other technical problems have been solved to pave the way for even higher performance converters in the future.

Gain Stability of Hamamatsu R5912-MOD Photo-Multipliers at Low Temperature

The Photon Detection System is a crucial component of the ICARUS detector in the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Program at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL). It consists of 360 Photo Multiplier Tubes (PMTs) 8” Hamamatsu R5912-MOD and, since June 2020, it has been operated at the liquid Argon cryogenic temperature. During these years, the PMTs have shown gain losses as an aging effect. Using a climatic chamber at the INFN Sezione di Catania, we confirmed a stable gain for a single PMT 8” Hamamatsu 5912-MOD when operated at room temperature, and a persistent gain loss at temperatures around -70°C, although far from the liquid Argon one. No gain recovery was obtained bringing the PMT back to room temperature. We suspect that dynode deterioration due to temperature gradient plays a significant role in this phenomenon. During our test, the PMT was illuminated by a 520 nm laser source and operated in current mode. The laser beam was split into two optical fibers, the first one transmitting light through Neutral Density filters and then diffusing it over the surface of the PMT photocathode. The other optical fiber was used for an independent reference measurement of the injected light via a bolometric photodetector. In this presentation, the main technical characteristics of the measurement system are shown together with preliminary results which need further investigation to elucidate the underlying mechanisms driving the gain loss and to propose new mitigation strategies.

Improved Joint FHC+RHC Sterile Analysis with Nu-on-E Sample

The NOvA experiment measures neutrino oscillations in a nearly pure muon neutrino beam. The neutral current (NC) and the muon neutrino charged current (CC) interaction disappearance are studied to search for active-to-sterile neutrino oscillations. NOvA consists of two functionally identical detectors placed 14 mrad off-axis of Fermilab's NuMI beamline. The Near Detector (ND) is located 100 m underground on-site at Fermilab, while the Far Detector (FD) sits on the surface 810 km away at Ash River, Minnesota. The NuMI beam is capable of running in forward or reverse horn current modes, creating a predominantly neutrino or antineutrino beam, respectively. For this analysis, a simultaneous near and far detector joint fit approach was utilized. Systematic uncertainties constrain the ND while the statistical uncertainties constrain the FD. For the upcoming analysis, we plan on including a dedicated neutrino-on-electron elastic scattering sample. This interaction is advantageous as it is subject to minimal cross-section uncertainties, which will help reduce degeneracies between other uncertainty categories. This thesis presents the sterile neutrino oscillation sensitivity results using 27.2e+20 POT in FHC mode, 12.6e+20 in RHC mode.

Discrete time domain modelling and analysis of dc-dc converters with continuous and discontinuous inductor current

Using discrete time state variable representation, a generalized computer-aided modeling and analysis of dc-dc converters is presented. The methodology provides exact modeling and is applicable to all types of power stages and duty-cycle control, including continuous and discontinuous inductor current operation. Converter stability, transient behavior and audio susceptibility can be analytically evaluated and predicted. The generalized theory of the proposed approach to converter modeling and analysis is presented first, followed by a demonstrative example applying the theory to a constant frequency buck converter operating in continuous and discontinuous inductor current mode. Excellent agreement with laboratory test data has been observed.

Response of defects to illumination in silicon solar cells

The enhancement of diffusion length with intensity was examined using spectral response measurements in solar cells based on Silso silicon and EFG silicon ribbon. Local diffusion length variations at defect sites were investigated as a function of illumination level using a scanning electron microscope operated in the electron beam induced current mode. An increase of diffusion length was observed at defect sites as the intensity level was increased. The diffusion length improvements are explained on the basis of saturation of minority carrier traps in these materials. The trap distribution in Silso silicon is shown to be peaked near (Ec - 0.7)eV. EFG silicon ribbon shows a broad, Gaussian distribution of traps located near (Ec - 0.5)eV.

A study of the high frequency limitations of series resonant converters

A transformer induced oscillation in series resonant (SR) converters is studied. It may occur in the discontinuous current mode. The source of the oscillation is an unexpected resonant circuit formed by normal resonance components in series with the magnetizing inductance of the output transformers. The methods for achieving cyclic stability are: to use a half bridge SR converter where q0.5. Q should be as close to 1.0 as possible. If 0.5q1.0, the instability will be avoided if psi2/3q-1/3. The second objective was to investigate a power field effect transistor (FET) version of the SR converter capable of operating at frequencies above 100 KHz, to study component stress and losses at various frequencies.

Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS) orbiting profiles and Ni-Cd use

The Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS) is one of the more recently launched satellites of the Goddard Space Flight Center. The flight data of the two 50 Ah NASA standard batteries that are being flown on the ERBS are presented. Trend characteristics of the batteries were collected over a period of two years. The parameters that were trended are: the battery end-of-discharge voltage, time in peak power track, and time in constant current mode. All were plotted versus mission elapsed time. The slopes exhibited by the trended parameters indicate no adverse trends that would signify any appreciable degradation in the batteries.

Design of a battery charger for the NASA EOS space platform

A battery charger design for the NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) space platform has been developed and tested. The authors discuss the design of the battery charger power state and its current and voltage control loops. In addition to restoring energy to the batteries, this charger regulates the spacecraft bus voltage during the posteclipse transition period. The battery charger design and analysis were facilitated by use of the pulse-width-modulated (PWM) switch model and the new continuous-time model for current-mode control. Analyses of the battery charger small-signal behavior are compared to hardware measurements to verify modeling accuracy.

User's manual for Interactive Data Display System (IDDS)

A computer graphics package for the visualization of three-dimensional flow in turbomachinery has been developed and tested. This graphics package, called IDDS (Interactive Data Display System), is able to 'unwrap' the volumetric data cone associated with a centrifugal compressor and display the results in an easy to understand two-dimensional manner. IDDS will provide the majority of the visualization and analysis capability for the ICE (Integrated CFD and Experiment) system. This document is intended to serve as a user's manual for IDDS in a stand-alone mode. Currently, IDDS is capable of plotting two- or three-dimensional simulation data, but work is under way to expand IDDS so that experimental data can be accepted, plotted, and compared with a simulation dataset of the actual hardware being tested.

Scattering from arbitrarily shaped microstrip patch antennas

The scattering properties of arbitrarily shaped microstrip patch antennas are examined. The electric field integral equation for a current element on a grounded dielectric slab is developed for a rectangular geometry based on Galerkin's technique with subdomain rooftop basis functions. A shape function is introduced that allows a rectangular grid approximation to the arbitrarily shaped patch. The incident field on the patch is expressed as a function of incidence angle theta(i), phi(i). The resulting system of equations is then solved for the unknown current modes on the patch, and the electromagnetic scattering is calculated for a given angle. Comparisons are made with other calculated results as well as with measurements.
