Effect of noisy phase reference on coherent detection of unbalanced QPSK signals

A phase error in the reference signal used in coherent detection of PSK signals causes a degradation in performance; this effect on bit error probability has been much discussed in the literature for BPSK and balanced QPSK systems. For unbalanced QPSK (UQPSK) systems, where the power and data rates in the two channels are unequal, and where the channel data symbols might also be different, the problem of computing the error probability is more complex, and only approximate solutions have been previously given. In this paper, exact expressions are derived for the conditional probability of error for the I and Q channels as a function of the channel power and data rate ratio. This is done for all combinations of Manchester and NRZ signalling schemes, and it is shown that in some cases the low data rate channel can be more seriously affected by a phase offset. Numerical results are also given for the average probability of error, assuming a biphase Costas loop is used for carrier synchronization.

The performance of suppressed carrier receivers in a pulsed RFI environment

This paper investigates the tracking performance of a Costas loop in the presence of single and multiple in-band pulsed RFI signals and receiver additive noise. It is shown that the loop's tracking performance is very sensitive to the pulse durations of the RFI signals, as well as their repetition rates and peak powers relative to those of the desired signal. The presence of in-band RFI can affect the loop's tracking performance in basically three ways. 1) The loop tracks the composite phase of the RFI instead of the phase of the desired signal when the effective RFI power is greater than that of the signal. 2) When the effective RFI power is not sufficiently large to capture the loop, there still will exist static phase error biases which cause the loop to lock at a phase between that of the desired signal and the composite RFI. 3) There is an increase in the rms phase jitter over the nominal design. These latter two effects degrade the bit error probability performance of the receiver. More significantly, if the nominal loop bandwidth is not designed properly to account for the increase in jitter phenomenon, frequency cycle slipping may result.

Carrier phase recovery performance for PN-spread TDRSS link with radio-frequency interference

The carrier-phase recovery performance of a Costas loop for a nonlinear satellite channel with uplink and downlink noise is analyzed, and the extension of these results to the case where uplink radio-frequency interference (RFI) is present is considered. The signal format here is binary phase-shift-keyed (BPSK) or unbalanced quaternary phase-shift-keyed (UQPSK), the signals being either the non-return-to-zero (NRZ) or biphase (Manchester) type. With UQPSK, at least one data stream must be PN-spread. The channel comprises additive white Gaussian noise (WGN), a wideband filter, a bandpass nonlinearity and more additive WGN. The RFI being considered is pulsed continuous-wave, pulsed WGN, or a combination of the two. It is noted that the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) will be subjected to RFI from certain locations, especially in the S-band of frequencies. The characteristics of this link are generalized to form the assumptions underlying this analysis. The analytical results given include the S-curve of the equivalent loop and the phase-error variance of the linearized loop.

Orbiter global positioning system design and Ku-band problem investigations, exhibit B, revision 1

The shuttle Ku-band Costas loop lock detector output signal appears to vary about the lock detection threshold (the lock detect flag is on and off) shortly after the carrier acquisition starts. Real time computer simulation was performed to obtain the signal output from the low pass filter of the lock detector. Based on this simulation, it appears that the oscillation of in-lock and out-lock is related to tracking process and is not caused by the sweep acquisition algorithm.

Application of LANDSAT data to the study of urban development in Brasilia

The urban growth of Brasilia within the last ten years is analyzed with special emphasis on the utilization of remote sensing orbital data and automatic image processing. The urban spatial structure and the monitoring of its temporal changes were examined in a whole and dynamic way by the utilization of MSS-LANDSAT images for June (1973, 1978 and 1983). In order to aid data interpretation, a registration algorithm implemented in the Interactive Multispectral Image Analysis System (IMAGE-100) was utilized aiming at the overlap of multitemporal images. The utilization of suitable digital filters, combined with the images overlap, allowed a rapid identification of areas of possible urban growth and oriented the field work. The results obtained in this work permitted an evaluation of the urban growth of Brasilia, taking as reference the proposal stated for the construction of the city in the Pilot Plan elaborated by Lucio Costa.

Communication satellite ground station receiver performance at low data rates

Performance of satellite ground station receivers at low data rates is analyzed for power-limited satellites, when various amounts of frequency dynamics are present. Specifically, the lowest data rates for which the receiver can successfully demodulate suppressed-carrier BPSK data under a wide variety of conditions are determined. Minimum data rates on the order of 100 to 1400 bits per second are achievable with a bit error probability less than 0.00001 and with a mean time to cycle slip on the order of 1/2 hour or more, when Costas loops are employed for carrier extraction.

Relationship between forest clearing and biophysical factors in tropical environments: Implications for the design of a forest change monitoring approach

The relationship between forest clearing, biophysical factors (e.g, ecological zones, slope gradient, soils), and transportation network in Costa Rica was analyzed. The location of forested areas at four reference datas (1940, 1950, 1961, and 1977) as derived from aerial photography and LANDSAT MSS data was digitilized and entered into a geographically-referenced data base. Ecological zones as protrayed by the Holdridge Life Zone Ecology System, and the location of roads and railways were also digitized from maps of the entire country as input to the data base. Information on slope gradient and soils was digitized from maps of a 21,000 square kilometer area. The total area of forest cleared over four decades are related to biophysical factors was analyzed within the data base and deforestation rates and trends were tabulated. The relatiohship between forest clearing and ecological zone and the influence of topography, sils, and transportation network are presented and discussed.

Shuttle S-band communications technical concepts

Using the S-band communications system, shuttle orbiter can communicate directly with the Earth via the Ground Spaceflight Tracking and Data Network (GSTDN) or via the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS). The S-band frequencies provide the primary links for direct Earth and TDRSS communications during all launch and entry/landing phases of shuttle missions. On orbit, S-band links are used when TDRSS Ku-band is not available, when conditions require orbiter attitudes unfavorable to Ku-band communications, or when the payload bay doors are closed. the S-band communications functional requirements, the orbiter hardware configuration, and the NASA S-band communications network are described. The requirements and implementation concepts which resulted in techniques for shuttle S-band hardware development discussed include: (1) digital voice delta modulation; (2) convolutional coding/Viterbi decoding; (3) critical modulation index for phase modulation using a Costas loop (phase-shift keying) receiver; (4) optimum digital data modulation parameters for continuous-wave frequency modulation; (5) intermodulation effects of subcarrier ranging and time-division multiplexing data channels; (6) radiofrequency coverage; and (7) despreading techniques under poor signal-to-noise conditions. Channel performance is reviewed.

Performance of the Dsa's Subcarrier Demodulation Digital Loop

The subcarrier demodulation digital loop is part of the baseband assembly. The subcarrier demodulator is a fourth-order Costas-type loop corresponding to a type 2 analog loop in terms of steady state response. The expected value and the variance of the error signal are determined as functions of the input SNR. A Nyquist sampling rate of the input signal is assumed. From the integro-difference equations a mixed s/z domain block diagram is obtained. From the loop's transfer function a set of gains for the loop filter is obtained. Also, a set of state equations is presented for future reference. Finally, the noise-equivalent bandwidths are calculated for normalized computation times of 0, 0.25 and 0.5. The subcarrier demodulator analyzed tracks a parabolic phase input with finite steady state error. Since at each update instant the loop gains are adjusted to compensate for the variations in SNR of the input signal, the noise-equivalent bandwidth is maintained constant.

Digital image classification approach for estimating forest clearing and regrowth rates and trends

A technique is presented to monitor vegetation changes for a selected study area in Costa Rica. A normalized difference vegetation index was computed for three dates of Landsat satellite data and a modified parallelipiped classifier was employed to generate a multitemporal greenness image representing all three dates. A second-generation image was created by partitioning the intensity levels at each date into high, medium, and low and thereby reducing the number of classes to 21. A sampling technique was applied to describe forest and other land cover change occurring between time periods based on interpretation of aerial photography that closely matched the dates of satellite acquisition. Comparison of the Landsat-derived classes with the photo-interpreted sample areas can provide a basis for evaluating the satellite monitoring technique and the accuracy of estimating forest clearing and regrowth rates and trends.

Cross-system comparisons of soil nitrogen transformations and nitrous oxide flux in tropical forest ecosystems

Soil nitrogen transformations and nitrous oxide flux across the soil-air interface have been measured in a variety of tropical forest sites and correlated with patterns of nitrogen circulation. Nitrogen mineralizaton and nitrification potentials were found to be high in the relatively fertile Costa Rica sites and the Amazonian oxisol/ultisols, intermediate in Amazonian white sand soils, and low in the Hawaiian montane sites. Nitrous oxide fluxes ranged from 0 to 6.2 ng/sq cm per h, and the mean flux per site was shown to be highly correlated with mean nitrogen mineralization.

Phase-ambiguity resolution for QPSK modulation systems. Part 2: A method to resolve offset QPSK

Part 2 presents a new method to resolve the phase-ambiguity for Offset QPSK modulation systems. When an Offset Quaternary Phase-Shift-Keyed (OQPSK) communications link is utilized, the phase ambiguity of the reference carrier must be resolved. At the transmitter, two different unique words are separately modulated onto the quadrature carriers. At the receiver, the recovered carrier may have one of four possible phases, 0, 90, 180, or 270 degrees, referenced to the nominally correct phase. The IF portion of the channel may cause a phase-sense reversal, i.e., a reversal in the direction of phase rotation for a specified bit pattern. Hence, eight possible phase relationships (the so-called eight ambiguous phase conditions) between input and output of the demodulator must be resolved. Using the In-phase (I)/Quadrature (Q) channel reversal correcting property of an OQPSK Costas loop with integrated symbol synchronization, four ambiguous phase conditions are eliminated. Thus, only four possible ambiguous phase conditions remain. The errors caused by the remaining ambiguous phase conditions can be corrected by monitoring and detecting the polarity of the two unique words. The correction of the unique word polarities results in the complete phase-ambiguity resolution for the OQPSK system.

The use of interleaving for reducing radio loss in trellis-coded modulation systems

It is demonstrated how the use of interleaving/deinterleaving in trellis-coded modulation (TCM) systems can reduce the signal-to-noise ratio loss due to imperfect carrier demodulation references. Both the discrete carrier (phase-locked loop) and suppressed carrier (Costas loop) cases are considered and the differences between the two are clearly demonstrated by numerical results. These results are of great importance for future communication links to the Deep Space Network (DSN), especially from high Earth orbiters, which may be bandwidth limited.

Modem simulations for possible use in Space Station

Two candidate modem structures for use in the Space Station Multiple-Access Communications System were simulated using a software simulation package to obtain symbol error-rate curves. These systems represent an evolutionary QPSK-through-8 PSK modulation format for the input data streams. It was found that the use of phase-staggered QPSK modems would give lower expected implementation loss than a modem based upon the polarity-Costas-loop method. However, the latter would represent a simpler hardware investment to realize the modem structure for both QPSK and 8 PSK.

Simple proof of the concavity of the entropy power with respect to Gaussian noise

A very simple proof of M. H. Costa's result that the entropy power of Xt = X + N (O, tI) is concave in t, is derived as an immediate consequence of an inequality concerning Fisher information. This relationship between Fisher information and entropy is found to be useful for proving the central limit theorem. Thus, one who seeks new entropy inequalities should try first to find new inequalities about Fisher information, or at least to exploit the existing ones in new ways.

QPSK loop lock detection in the advanced receiver

The Advanced Receiver (ARX 2) currently being developed uses a Costas crossover loop to acquire and track the phase of an incoming quadrature phase-shift-keyed (QPSK) signal. The performance is described for the QPSK lock detector to be implemented, taking into account the phase jitter in the tracking loop. Simulations are used to verify the results of the analysis.
