Snap-Through Buckling Pressure Prediction of Spherical Caps: A Comparison of Analytical, Implicit, and Explicit Methods

Snap-through buckling is a nonlinear and dynamic instability that occurs in curved shell structures such as domes, pressure vessels, and aerospace panels. Unlike classical linear buckling, it involves a sudden transition between equilibrium states caused by geometric nonlinearity and rapid strain-to-kinetic energy conversion (Timoshenko & Gere, 1961; Budiansky & Roth, 1962). This study investigates the snap-through behavior of thin spherical caps using both implicit and explicit solvers in ANSYS Workbench. While implicit analysis accurately captures quasi-static response, it struggles with convergence near instability. In contrast, explicit LS-DYNA simulation naturally handles the nonlinear dynamic event with minimal tuning and computational cost.

Preparing California’s Cap-and-Trade Program for 2045: Integrating Carbon Dioxide Removal

To meet California’s legislatively mandated 2045 carbon neutrality target (AB 1279, Muratsuchi), analyses from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have shown that carbon dioxide removal—activities that permanently remove carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from the atmosphere—will be necessary to remove greenhouse gas emissions that are otherwise too costly or difficult to reduce. This policy brief explores the policy, legal, and technical considerations for integrating carbon dioxide removal into the Cap-and-Trade Program.

Tailoring the Spin Reorientation Transition of Co Films by Pd Monolayer Capping

We have characterized the magnetization easy-axis of ultra-thin Co films (2–5 atomic layers, AL) grown on Ru(0001) when they are capped with a monolayer of Pd. The addition of a Pd monolayer turns the magnetization of 3 and 4 AL-thick Co films from an in-plane to an out-of-plane alignment, but not that of a 5 AL-thick film. These observations are explained in terms of an enhancement of the surface anisotropy. The exposure of the sample to hydrogen, CO or a combination of both gases does not overcome this effect.

TRACER-CAT-LANL Aerosol Optics and Chemical Speciation - CAPS-SSA

Aerosol size distribution, optical properties, and speciation data collected in La Port TX, during TRACER-CAT-LANL, July 2022, with basic trace gas measurements. All sampling was conducted with an identical aerosol inlet as the standard ARM-AOS systems. The TRacking Aerosol Convection interactions ExpeRiment Carbonaceous Aerosols Thrust by Los Alamos National Laboratory (TRACER-CAT-LANL, July 2022) was designed to complement the larger ARM TRACER science goals to understand convective cloud lifecycles and aerosol-convection interactions. TRACER-CAT-LANL is focused on understanding the relationship between particle composition and light absorption and the influence of water uptake on this relationship. This aerosol and trace gas data can be used to understand the relationship between particle composition and light absorption and the influence of water uptake on this relationship. Instruments Include: Picarro GHG Photoacoustic Soot Spectrometer (PASS-3) Humidified-cavity attenuated phase shift-single scattering albedo particulate matter monitor (H-CAPS-PMSSA) Soot Particle Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (SPAMS) Single-Particle Soot Photometer (SP2) Cloud Condensation Nuclei Counter (CCNc) Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS)

The Tianlai-WIYN North Celestial Cap Redshift Survey

We present the results of a small, low redshift spectroscopic survey of galaxies within 3 degrees of the North Celestial Pole (NCP) selected using V-band photometry obtained from the North Celestial Cap Survey (NCCS) (Gorbikov & Brosch 2014). The purpose of the current survey is to create a redshift space template for 21 cm emission from neutral hydrogen with which to correlate radio line intensity observations by the Tianlai dish and cylinder interferometers. A total of 898 redshifts were obtained from the 2102 extended objects in the NCCS with m_V < 19 in the survey area. After accounting for extinction, the survey geometry and selection effects, the number density and clustering pattern of galaxies in the redshift catalog are consistent with other low redshift surveys. We were also able to identify 11 galaxy cluster candidates from this redshift catalog.

Pertechnetate/perrhenate–capped Zr/Hf–Dihydroxide Dimers: Elucidating Zr–TcO 4 Co–Mobility in the Nuclear Fuel Cycle

Spent nuclear fuel contains heavy element fission products that must be separated for effective reprocessing for a safe and sustainable nuclear fuel cycle. 93 Zr and 99 Tc are high-yield fission products that co-transport in liquid-liquid extraction processes. Here we seek atomic-level information of this co-extraction process, as well as fundamental knowledge about Zr IV (and Hf IV ) aqueous speciation in the presence of topology-directing ligands such as pertechnetate (TcO 4 – ) and non-radioactive surrogate perrhenate (ReO 4 – ). In this context, we show that the flat tetrameric oxyhydroxyl-cluster [M IV 4 (OH) 8 (H 2 O) 16 ] 8+ (and related polymers) is dissociated by perrhenate/pertechnetate to yield isostructural dimers, M 2 (OH) 2 (XO 4 – ) 6 (H 2 O) 6 • 3H 2 O (M=Zr/Hf IV ; X=Re/Tc VII ), elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. We used these model compounds to understand the pervasive 93 Zr- 99 Tc coextraction with further speciation studies in water, nitric acid, and tetrabutylphosphate (TBP) -kerosene; where the latter two media are relevant to nuclear fuel reprocessing. SAXS (small angle X-ray scattering), compositional evaluation, and where experimentally feasible, ESI-MS (electrospray ionization mass spectrometry) showed that perrhenate/pertechnetate influence Zr/Hf IV -speciation in water. Here, in Zr-XO 4 solvent extraction studies to simulate fuel reprocessing, we provide evidence that TcO 4 – enhances extraction of Zr IV , and compositional analysis of the extracted metal-complexes (Zr-ReO 4 study) is consistent with the crystallized Zr IV 2 (OH) 2 (Re VII O 4 – ) 6 (H 2 O) 6 •dimer.

Modeling of the effectiveness of novel edge seal designs for fast, low‐Cap‐Ex manufacturing

Abstract In the manufacturing of photovoltaic (PV) modules, the lamination process can take up to 20 min to complete. In this work, new lamination processes are being developed, and have been prototyped, which hope to be able to cut this time down to as little as 30 s. This could provide significant savings in the cost of lamination equipment, floor space, and energy. PV modules are expected to have a lifespan exceeding 20 to 30 years. For moisture‐sensitive PV technologies, the edge seal between the two layers of glass can be the weakest point of its reliability. There is an inherent challenge when evaluating edge seal materials due to their low permeation rates. As part of Colorado State University's Photovoltaic Research and Development 2, work at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory has developed models to evaluate edge seal configurations in glass‐glass PV modules. Here, this new manufacturing process is evaluated for long‐term moisture durability. Different edge seal design options within glass–glass PV modules are explored. Most of these designs are targeting a superstrate on glass configuration, e.g CdTe, but some designs could be used on conventional crystalline Si cells. Using COMSOL finite element simulation software, we investigated the edge seal and interlayer design configurations containing silicone perimeter edge adhesive, desiccated polyisobutylene‐based edge seal, air, and polyolefin while integrating climate conditions equivalent to a hot and humid environment such as Miami, Florida. We found optimized configurations that will allow the module to prevent moisture ingress over 50 years minimizing the amount of time and material used while utilizing polymers that are easily dispensed.

Magnetic and EPR Spectroscopic Studies of Thiolate Bridged Divalent Ni, Pd, and Pt Ions Capped with VO(N 2 S 2 ) Metalloligands

Reactions of the metallodithiolate complex VO(bme-dach) (hereafter abbreviated as V, where bme-dach = N,N ′-bis(2-mercaptoethyl)-1,4-diazacycloheptane) with [Pd II (CH 3 CN) 4 ](BF 4 ) 2 and [Pt II (CH 3 CN) 4 ](BF 4 ) 2 yield the V–M–V trimetallic compounds [VPdV](BF 4 ) 2 (2) and [VPtV](BF 4 ) 2 (3). Reaction of a similar metalloligand, VO(bme-daco) (hereafter abbreviated as V′ where bme-daco = N,N′-bis(2-mercaptoethyl)-1,5-diazacyclooctane) with [Ni II (CH 3 CN) 6 ](BF 4 ) 2 afforded the related salt [V′NiV′](BF 4 ) 2 (1). X-ray structural analyses revealed that cations in 1, 2, and 3 adopt a stairstep C 2h structure consisting of two terminal VO(N 2 S 2 ) moieties bridged via thiolate sulfur to the group 10 metal ions. Weak ferromagnetic superexchange coupling (J = 0.282 cm –1 for 1, 0.954 cm –1 for 2, and 1.372 cm –1 for 3) was observed between the two S = 1/2 V IV centers separated by distances in the range of 5.9–6.3 Å, with J values varying following the order Ni < Pd < Pt. Frozen-solution EPR spectra measured on the more soluble [BArF 24 ] − (BArF 24 – = tetrakis((3,5-trifluoromethyl)phenyl)borate) analogues revealed that the [VPtV] 2+ cation exhibits a 15-line hyperfine splitting of 225 MHz at g = 4 in parallel mode, confirming exchange coupling between the two 51 V, I = 7/2 nuclei. Density-functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate an S = 1 ground state for 1–3. These results demonstrate that the choice of paramagnetic metallodithiolate ligand and diamagnetic bridge in such trimetallic species influences the sign and magnitude of magnetic interactions.
