A simple formulation of oxygen absorption at centimeter wavelengths

Carefully performed experiments by a number of investigators have supported the Van Vleck line shape theory for oxygen absorption in the lower-frequency wing (0-50 GHz). In view of the frequent need to compute oxygen absorption at centimeter wavelengths and lower a computationally simple four-line absorption model based on the Van Vleck theory is offered. The approximation yields computational accuracy better than 1% over the entire range of atmospheric pressures and temperatures for frequencies less than 30 GHz when it is compared with the Van Vleck 45-line expression. The versatility of the model in adapting to various line-broadening expressions is also shown. Instead of refining the present theories, this communication is mainly intended to propose a more convenient formulation to compute oxygen absorption.

An information theory of image gathering

Shannon's mathematical theory of communication is extended to image gathering. Expressions are obtained for the total information that is received with a single image-gathering channel and with parallel channels. It is concluded that the aliased signal components carry information even though these components interfere with the within-passband components in conventional image gathering and restoration, thereby degrading the fidelity and visual quality of the restored image. An examination of the expression for minimum mean-square-error, or Wiener-matrix, restoration from parallel image-gathering channels reveals a method for unscrambling the within-passband and aliased signal components to restore spatial frequencies beyond the sampling passband out to the spatial frequency response cutoff of the optical aperture.

A novel multireceiver communications system configuration based on optimal estimation theory

A multireceiver configuration for the purpose of carrier arraying and/or signal arraying is presented. Such a problem arises for example, in the NASA Deep Space Network where the same data-modulated signal from a spacecraft is received by a number of geographically separated antennas and the data detection must be efficiently performed on the basis of the various received signals. The proposed configuration is arrived at by formulating the carrier and/or signal arraying problem as an optimal estimation problem. Two specific solutions are proposed. The first solution is to simultaneously and optimally estimate the various phase processes received at different receivers with coupled phase locked loops (PLLs) wherein the individual PLLs acquire and track their respective receivers' phase processes, but are aided by each other in an optimal manner. However, when the phase processes are relatively weakly correlated, and for the case of relatively high values of symbol energy-to-noise spectral density ratio, a novel configuration for combining the data modulated, loop-output signals is proposed. The scheme can be extended to the case of low symbol energy-to-noise case by performing the combining/detection process over a multisymbol period. Such a configuration results in the minimization of the effective radio loss at the combiner output, and thus a maximization of energy per bit to noise-power spectral density ration is achieved.

Novel multireceiver communication systems configurations based on optimal estimation theory

A novel multireceiver configuration for carrier arraying and/or signal arraying is presented. The proposed configuration is obtained by formulating the carrier and/or signal arraying problem as an optimal estimation problem, and it consists of two stages. The first stage optimally estimates various phase processes received at different receivers with coupled phase-locked loops wherein the individual loops acquire and track their respective receivers' phase processes but are aided by each other in an optimal manner via LF error signals. The proposed configuration results in the minimization of the the effective radio loss at the combiner output, and thus maximization of energy per bit to noise power spectral density ratio is achieved. A novel adaptive algorithm for the estimator of the signal model parameters when these are not known a priori is also presented.

A modified Barrett-Lampard expansion and its application to bandpass nonlinearities with both AM-AM and AM-PM conversion

A two-dimensional Barrett-Lampard expansion is developed to handle two-dimensional nonlinear systems with random Gaussian inputs. The theory is applied to the problem of evaluating the mean signal and the inphase and quadrature noise correlation functions at the output of a TWT nonlinearity exhibiting arbitrary AM-AM and AM-PM characteristics, when the input consists of a narrow-band signal and Gaussian noise. As a specialized application, the classical problem of determining the coherent and incoherent noise correlation functions at the output of a power-law bandpass nonlinearity is also considered. The results are of interest in assessing the performance of coherent satellite communication channels. The theory developed is accompanied by numerical examples of practical interest.

Visual communication - Information and fidelity

This assessment of visual communication deals with image gathering, coding, and restoration as a whole rather than as separate and independent tasks. The approach focuses on two mathematical criteria, information and fidelity, and on their relationships to the entropy of the encoded data and to the visual quality of the restored image. Past applications of these criteria to the assessment of image coding and restoration have been limited to the link that connects the output of the image-gathering device to the input of the image-display device. By contrast, the approach presented in this paper explicitly includes the critical limiting factors that constrain image gathering and display. This extension leads to an end-to-end assessment theory of visual communication that combines optical design with digital processing.

Technical Communication: Perspectives for the Eighties, Part 1. Proceedings of the Technical Communications Sessions at the 32Nd Annual Meeting of the Conference on College Composition and Communication

Proceeding of the technical communication sessions at the 32nd annual meeting of the Conference on College Composition and Communication held in Dallas, Texas, March 26-28, 1981 are summarized. The proceeding suggest that technical communication has become an important subfield and is becoming an intrinsic part of many undergraduate curricula. Technical communication as a separate discipline, however, is relatively new. For that reason, proceedings that can make current research available as quickly as possible are suggested for preparation. The following topics were addressed: (1) a history and definition of technical writing, (2) the case method is technical communication (3) teaching technical writing (4) oral communication and rhetorical theory, and (5) new approaches in and practical applications of technical writing.

Enhancing accessibility and usability of Algorithm Theoretical Basis Documents through the Algorithm Publication Tool

Effective communication of scientific theories is crucial for transforming raw instrument data into valuable Earth observation products. The NASA Earth science data community disseminates this knowledge through Algorithm Theoretical Basis Documents (ATBDs). Historically, these documents lacked a standardized format, were designed for human readability rather than machine interpretation, and were challenging to locate due to the absence of a centralized repository. The Algorithm Publication Tool (APT) transforms how ATBD content is presented, simplifying the processes of creating, updating, and locating these documents. APT offers authors the option to use its user-friendly cloud-based interface or standardized templates for ATBD development. The primary advantage of the interface is its capability to manage the entire ATBD creation process within a single environment, ensuring comprehensive tracking of all activities and facilitating user tasks. Conversely, the use of standardized ATBD templates allows users to create documents using familiar tools like Google Docs, Microsoft Word, or Overleaf for LaTeX. APT also provides a centralized repository, enabling easy search and discovery of published ATBDs. This presentation showcases APT's functionalities, illustrates its contributions to advancing open science, and highlights potential benefits for broader community adoption.

Optical communication with two-photon coherent stages. I - Quantum-state propagation and quantum-noise reduction

To determine the ultimate performance limitations imposed by quantum effects, it is also essential to consider optimum quantum-state generation. Certain 'generalized' coherent states of the radiation field possess novel quantum noise characteristics that offer the potential for greatly improved optical communications. These states have been called two-photon coherent states because they can be generated, in principle, by stimulated two-photon processes. The use of two-photon coherent state (TCS) radiation in free-space optical communications is considered. A simple theory of quantum state propagation is developed. The theory provides the basis for representing the free-space channel in a quantum-mechanical form convenient for communication analysis. The new theory is applied to TCS radiation.

A characterization of transionospheric fading communication channel

Using a multiple-scatter propagation theory, the characteristics of the transionospheric satellite-earth communication links are related to the parameters of the ionosphere. General equations for the frequency correlation functions are derived. Some approximate solutions are obtained and numerical examples are given. Also discussed are the degree of coherence and potential applications of the procedure to characterize the intense fading channel.
