Direct quarkonium-plus-gluon production in DIS in the color glass condensate

We compute the differential cross-section for direct quarkonium production accompanied by a gluon in high-energy deep inelastic scattering (DIS) at small- x . We employ the Non-Relativistic QCD factorization framework, focusing on the S -wave contribution to the formation of the quarkonium, and including both color singlet and octet contributions. Our short distance coefficients for the production of the heavy quark pair are obtained within the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory. Our results pave the way towards the next-to-leading order computation of direct quarkonium in DIS, as well as the study of azimuthal correlations of direct quarkonium and jet.

Color-octet scalars in Dirac gaugino models with broken R symmetry

In this work we study the collider phenomenology of color-octet scalars ( sgluons ) in supersymmetric models with Dirac gaugino masses that feature an explicitly broken R symmetry ( R - broken models ). We construct such models by augmenting minimal R -symmetric models with a fairly general set of supersymmetric and softly supersymmetry-breaking operators that explicitly break R symmetry. We then compute the rates of all significant two-body decays and highlight new features that appear as a result of R symmetry breaking, including enhancements to extant decay rates, novel tree- and loop-level decays, and improved cross sections of single sgluon production. We demonstrate in some detail how the familiar results from minimal R -symmetric models can be obtained by restoring R symmetry. In parallel to this discussion, we explore constraints on these models from the Large Hadron Collider. We find that, in general, R symmetry breaking quantitatively affects existing limits on color-octet scalars, perhaps closing loopholes for light CP-odd (pseudoscalar) sgluons while opening one for a light CP-even (scalar) particle. Qualitatively, however, we find that — much as for minimal R -symmetric models, despite stark differences in phenomenology — scenarios with broken R symmetry and two sgluons below the TeV scale can be accommodated by existing searches.

On-shell correlators and color-kinematics duality in curved symmetric spacetimes

We define a perturbatively calculable quantity — the on-shell correlator — which furnishes a unified description of particle dynamics in curved spacetime. Specializing to the case of flat and anti-de Sitter space, on-shell correlators coincide precisely with on-shell scattering amplitudes and boundary correlators, respectively. Remarkably, we find that symmetric manifolds admit a generalization of on-shell kinematics in which the corresponding momenta are literally the isometry generators of the spacetime acting on the external kinematic data. These isometric momenta are intrinsically non-commutative but exhibit on-shell conditions that are identical to those of flat space, thus providing a common language for computing and representing on-shell correlators which is agnostic about the underlying geometry. Afterwards, we compute tree-level on-shell correlators for biadjoint scalar (BAS) theory and the nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) and learn that color-kinematics duality is manifested at the level of fields under a mapping of the color algebra to the algebra of gauged isometries on the spacetime manifold. Last but not least, we present a field theoretic derivation of the fundamental BCJ relations for on-shell correlators following from the existence of certain conserved currents in BAS theory and the NLSM.

Coaxial color channel focus evaluation to estimate standoff height in directed energy deposition additive manufacturing

Directed energy deposition (DED) is an additive manufacturing process that is being rapidly adopted by industry and is well suited for the fabrication of complex components in a variety of metal alloys. In laser cladding systems such as DED, powder is blown in a stream to a metal substrate coincident with a laser necessary to deposit molten metal with 3D spatial control. The focus of both the laser and the powder stream are crucial, and best deposition occurs at a predetermined standoff height between the build surface and the print head. Generally, no monitoring of this distance is implemented in commercial DED systems. Due to potential over or under building, the standoff height often changes over time but tends to self-correct. However, inexpensive and minimally intrusive methods to identify optimal standoff are required to provide real-time control to maintain the optimal distance. The present work explores the quantification of the focus of the three-color channels of a coaxial camera to determine the standoff height. An experiment was performed in which a 254 mm wall is built and the standoff height, initially 5.0 mm below the optimal position, was then intentionally increased every 25.4 mm of wall length by an amount of 1.0 mm to a final position 7.0 mm above optimal. Computer vision is demonstrated to monitor the amount of focus in each color band and estimate standoff distance. Finally, a response can be calculated in under 40 ms using simple hardware and can work in most laser-based DED systems.

Two-Color IRMPD Applied to Conformationally Complex Ions: Probing Cold Ion Structure and Hot Ion Unfolding

Two-color infrared multiphoton dissociation (2C-IRMPD) spectroscopy is a technique that mitigates spectral distortions due to nonlinear absorption that is inherent to one-color IRMPD. We use a 2C-IRMPD scheme that incorporates two independently tunable IR sources, providing considerable control over the internal energy content and type of spectrum obtained by varying the trap temperature, the time delays and fluences of the two infrared lasers, and whether the first or second laser wavelength is scanned. In this work, we describe the application of this variant of 2C-IRMPD to conformationally complex peptide ions. The 2C-IRMPD technique is used to record near-linear action spectra of both cations and anions with temperatures ranging from 10 to 300 K. In this work, we also determine the conditions under which it is possible to record IR spectra of single conformers in a conformational mixture. Furthermore, we demonstrate the capability of the technique to explore conformational unfolding by recording IR spectra with widely varying internal energy in the ion. The protonated peptide ions YGGFL (NH 3 + -Tyr-Gly-Gly-Phe-Leu, Leu-enkephalin) and YGPAA (NH 3 + -Tyr-Gly-Pro-Ala-Ala) are used as model systems for exploring the advantages and disadvantages of the method when applied to conformationally complex ions.

Probing Charge Dynamics in Diamond with an Individual Color Center

Control over the charge states of color centers in solids is necessary to fully utilize them in quantum technologies. However, the microscopic charge dynamics of deep defects in wide-band-gap semiconductors are complex, and much remains unknown. We utilize a single-shot charge-state readout of an individual nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center to probe the charge dynamics of the surrounding defects in diamond. We show that the NV center charge state can be converted through the capture of holes produced by optical illumination of defects many micrometers away. With this method, we study the optical charge conversion of silicon-vacancy (SiV) centers and provide evidence that the dark state of the SiV center under optical illumination is SiV 2– . These measurements illustrate that charge carrier generation, transport, and capture are important considerations in the design and implementation of quantum devices with color centers and provide a novel way to probe and control charge dynamics in diamond.

Correlated color temperature is not a suitable proxy for the biological potency of light

Using a simulation based on a real, five-channel tunable LED lighting system, we show that Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) is not a reasonable predictor of the biological potency of light, whether characterized with CIE melanopic Equivalent Daylight Illuminance (mel-EDI), Equivalent Melanopic Lux (EML) (a scalar multiple of mel-EDI), or Circadian Stimulus (CS). At a photopic corneal illuminance of 300 lx and Rf ≥ 70, spectra can vary in CS from 17 to 41% across CCTs from 2500 to 6000 K, and up to 23% at a single CCT, due to the choice of spectrum alone. The CS range is largest, and notably discontinuous, at a CCT of 3500 K, the location of the inflection point of the CS model. At a photopic corneal illuminance of 300 lx and Rf ≥ 70, mel-EDI can vary from 123 to 354 lx across CCTs from 2500 to 6000 K and can vary by up to 123 lx at a fixed CCT (e.g., 196 to 319 lx at 5000 K). The range of achievable mel-EDI increases as CCT increases and, on average, decreases as color fidelity, characterized with IES TM-30 Rf, increases. These data demonstrate that there is no easy mathematical conversion between CS and mel-EDI when a spectrally diverse spectra set of spectral power distributions is considered.

Ultra-high SERS detection of consumable coloring agents using plasmonic gold nanostars with high aspect-ratio spikes

Solution-based SERS detection by using a portable Raman instrument has emerged as an important tool due to its simplicity, and flexibility for rapid and on-site screening of analyte molecules. However, this method has several shortcomings, including poor sensitivity especially for weak-affinity analyte molecules, where there is no close contact between the plasmonic metal surface and analyte molecule. Examples of weak-affinity molecules include pigment molecules that are commonly used as a consumable coloring agent, such as allura red (AR), and sunset yellow (SY). As high consumption of colorant agents has been shown to cause adverse effects on human health, there is a strong need to develop a simple and practical sensing system with high sensitivity for these agents. Here we present a novel, highly sensitive solution-based SERS detection method for AR, and SY by using CTAC capped gold nanostars (GNS) having different aspect ratios (GNS-2, GNS-4, and GNS-5) without utilizing any aggregating agents which can enhance SERS signal however it reduces batch to batch reproducibility. The influence of the aspect ratio of GNS on SERS properties was investigated. We have achieved a limit of detection (LOD) of AR and SY as low as 0.5 and 1 ppb, respectively by using GNS-5 with the advantages of minimal sample preparation by just mixing the analyte solution into a well plate containing GNS solution. In addition, excellent colloidal stability and reproducibility have further enhanced the applicability in real-world samples. Altogether, our results evidence that the solution-based SERS detection platform using high aspect-ratio GNS can be applied for practical application to detect pigment molecules in real samples with satisfactory results.

Dynamically tunable multicolor emissions from zero-dimensional Cs 3 LnCl 6 (Ln: europium and terbium) nanocrystals with wide color gamut

This study demonstrates dynamically tunable multicolor emissions from a single component, zero-dimensional (0-D) cesium europium chloride (Cs 3 EuCl 6 ) and cesium terbium chloride (Cs 3 TbCl 6 ) nanocrystals (NCs). Highly uniform colloidal Cs 3 EuCl 6 and Cs 3 TbCl 6 NCs are synthesized via the heating-up method. Excitation-wavelength-dependent multicolor emissions from Cs 3 EuCl 6 and Cs 3 TbCl 6 NCs are observed. Under excitation of 330–400 nm, both NCs exhibit blue photoluminescence (PL). Under wavelengths shorter than 330 nm, characteristic red and green emissions are observed from Cs 3 EuCl 6 and Cs 3 TbCl 6 , respectively, owing to the atomic emissions from the f-orbitals in trivalent europium (Eu 3+ ) and terbium (Tb 3+ ) ions. Cs 3 EuCl 6 and Cs 3 TbCl 6 NCs exhibit broadband excitation spectra and enhanced absorption properties. Particularly, Cs 3 EuCl 6 NCs exhibit a very narrow full-width at half-maximum in both blue and red PL and no overlap between the two spectra. Further, the photophysical properties of these NCs are further investigated to understand the multicolor PL origins by time-resolved and temperature-dependent PL measurements. Finally, the potential applications of Cs 3 EuCl 6 and Cs 3 TbCl 6 NCs as anti-counterfeiting inks for high-level security are demonstrated. Given their broadband excitation with enhanced absorption properties and dynamically tunable colors with a wide color gamut, Cs 3 EuCl 6 and Cs 3 TbCl 6 NCs have great potential as novel multicolor NC emitters for many emerging applications.

Deep optical imaging of star-forming blue early-type galaxies: Color map structures and faint features indicative of recent mergers

Blue early-type galaxies with galaxy-scale ongoing star formation are interesting targets in order to understand the stellar mass buildup in elliptical and S0 galaxies in the local Universe. We study the star-forming population of blue early-type galaxies to understand the origin of star formation in these otherwise red and dead stellar systems. The legacy survey imaging data taken with the dark energy camera in the g, r, and z bands for 55 star-forming blue early-type galaxies were examined, and g – r color maps were created. We identified low surface brightness features near 37 galaxies, faint-level interaction signatures near 15 galaxies, and structures indicative of recent merger activity in the optical color maps of all 55 galaxies. These features are not visible in the shallow Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging data in which these galaxies were originally identified. Low surface brightness features found around galaxies could be remnants of recent merger events. The star-forming population of blue early-type galaxies could be post-merger systems that are expected to be the pathway for the formation of elliptical galaxies. We hypothesize that the star-forming population of blue early-type galaxies is a stage in the evolution of early-type galaxies. The merger features will eventually disappear, fuel for star formation will cease, and the galaxy will move to the passive population of normal early-type galaxies.

Strongly coupled intermediate electronic states in one-color two-photon single valence ionization of O 2

Here, we present an experimental and theoretical energy- and angle-resolved investigation on the non-dissociative photoionization dynamics of near-resonant, one-color, two-photon, single valence ionization of neutral O 2 molecules. Using 9.3 eV femtosecond pulses produced via high harmonic generation and a 3-D momentum imaging spectrometer, we detect the photoelectrons and O$^{+}_{2}$ cations produced from one-color, two-photon ionization in coincidence. The measured and calculated photoelectron angular distributions show agreement, which indicates that a superposition of two intermediate electronic states is dominantly involved and that wavepacket motion on those near-resonantly populated intermediate states does not play a significant role in the measured two-photon ionization dynamics. Here, we find greater utility in the diabatic representation compared to the adiabatic representation, where invoking a single valence-character diabat is sufficient to describe the underlying two-photon ionization mechanism.

Color center in β -Ga 2 O 3 emitting at the telecom range

Transition metal (TM) ions incorporated into a host from a wide bandgap semiconductor are recognized as a promising system for quantum technologies with enormous potential. In this work, we report on a TM color center in β-Ga 2 O 3 with physical properties attractive for quantum information applications. The center is found to emit at 1.316 μm and exhibits weak coupling to phonons, with optically addressable higher-lying excited states, beneficial for single-photon emission within the telecom range (O-band). Using magneto-photoluminescence (PL) complemented by time-resolved PL measurements, we identify the monitored emission to be internal 1 E→ 3 A 2 spin-forbidden transitions of a 3d 8 TM ion with a spin-triplet ground state—a possible candidate for a spin qubit. We tentatively attribute this color center to a complex involving a sixfold coordinated Cu 3+ ion.

CoLoRe: fast cosmological realisations over large volumes with multiple tracers

We present CoLoRe, a public software package to efficiently generate synthetic realisations of multiple cosmological surveys.CoLoRe can simulate the growth of structure with different degrees of accuracy, with the current implementation supporting lognormal fields, first, and second order Lagrangian perturbation theory.CoLoRe simulates the density field on an all-sky light-cone up to a desired maximum redshift, and uses it to generate multiple 2D and 3D maps: galaxy positions and velocities, lensing (shear, magnification, convergence), integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect, line intensity mapping, and line of sight skewers for simulations of the Lyman-α forest. We test the accuracy of the simulated maps against analytical theoretical predictions, and showcase its performance with a multi-survey simulation including DESI galaxies and quasars, LSST galaxies and lensing, and SKA intensity mapping and radio galaxies. We expect CoLoRe to be particularly useful in studies aiming to characterise the impact of systematics in multi-experiment analyses, quantify the covariance between different datasets, and test cross-correlation pipelines for near-future surveys.

Color Transformations of Photometric Measurements of Galaxies in Optical and Near-infrared Wide-field Imaging Surveys*

Abstract Over the past 2 decades, wide-field photometric surveys in optical and infrared domains reached a nearly all-sky coverage thanks to numerous observational facilities operating in both hemispheres. However, subtle differences among exact realizations of Johnson and SDSS photometric systems require one to convert photometric measurements into the same system prior to analysis of composite data sets originating from multiple surveys. It turns out that the published photometric transformations lead to substantial biases when applied to integrated photometry of galaxies from the corresponding catalogs. Here we present photometric transformations based on piece-wise linear approximations of integrated photometry of galaxies in the optical surveys SDSS, DECaLS, BASS, MzLS, DES, DELVE, KiDS, VST ATLAS, and the near-infrared surveys UKIDSS, UHS, VHS, and VIKING. We validate our transformations by constructing k -corrected color–magnitude diagrams of non-active galaxies and measuring the position and tightness of the “red sequence.” We also provide transformations for aperture magnitudes and show how they are affected by the image quality difference among the surveys. We present the implementation of the derived transformations in python and idl and also a web-based color transformation calculator for galaxies. By comparing DECaLS and DES, we identified systematic issues in DECaLS photometry for extended galaxies, which we attribute to the photometric software package used by DECaLS. As an application of our method, we compiled two multi-wavelength photometric catalogs for over 200,000 low- and intermediate-redshift galaxies originating from CfA FAST and Hectospec spectral archives.

Investigating color screening in proton-nucleus collisions with complex potentials*

Abstract Color screening and parton inelastic scattering modify the heavy-quark antiquark potential in mediums consisting of particles from quantum chromodynamics (QCD), leading to the suppression of quarkonium production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Owing to the small charm/anti-charm ( ) pair production number in proton-nucleus ( pA ) collisions, the correlation between different pairs is negligible, which makes the Schrödinger equation viable for tracking the evolution of only one pair. We employ the time-dependent Schrödinger equation with an in-medium potential to study the evolution of charmonium wave functions in a hydrodynamic-like QCD medium produced in pA collisions. We explore different parametrizations of real and imaginary parts of the potential and calculate the nuclear modification factors ( ) of and in TeV energy p -Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Comparing strong and weak screening scenarios with experimental data in this approach, we arrive at the conclusion that color screening is weak at temperatures close to the deconfined phase transition. Moreover, the imaginary part of the potential is crucial in describing the experimental data, which is consistent with widely studied semi-classical approaches, where dissociation rates are essential.

Characterisations of the HinOTORI telescope with a three-color imager at Ali Observatory in Western Tibet

HinOTORI is a new telescope supported by an international collaboration project between China and Japan. It is a 50 centimeter telescope equipped with simultaneous three-color imagers (u',R C , and I C bands). It is located at Ali Observatory at an altitude of 5100m. Thanks to the high altitude and extreme dryness, Ali site is one of the most suitable sites for optical astrometry. HinOTORI telescope aims at detecting optical transients such as the counterparts of gravitational wave (GW) sources, supernovae, gamma-ray bursts (GRB) and so on. This paper describes the site information, design of simultaneous three-color optical layout, system instruments and whole control system. We also report some telescope characterisations for three bands (u'/R C /I C ) respectively, such as Hartmann constant (0.49"/0.56"/0.60"), best focus position (3.922/3.920/3.903 mm), PSF FWHM size (3.755/3.328/3.167pixels), total transmittance and limiting magnitude (15.69/17.57/17.05mag, 10 σ 30 seconds exposure time). With different airmass observation data, the atmospheric extinction coefficients of three bands (0.366/0.061/0.026) were also derived.

The SAGEX review on scattering amplitudes Chapter 2: An invitation to color-kinematics duality and the double copy

Abstract Advances in scattering amplitudes have exposed previously-hidden color-kinematics and double-copy structures in theories ranging from gauge and gravity theories to effective field theories such as chiral perturbation theory and the Born–Infeld model. These novel structures both simplify higher-order calculations and pose tantalizing questions related to a unified framework underlying relativistic quantum theories. This introductory mini-review article invites further exploration of these topics. After a brief introduction to color-kinematics duality and the double copy as they emerge at tree and loop-level in gauge and gravity theories, we present two distinct examples: (1) an introduction to the web of double-copy-constructible theories, and (2) a discussion of the application of the double copy to calculation relevant to gravitational-wave physics.

Time-dependent density-functional theory of high-order harmonic generation from noble-gas atoms driven by orthogonally polarized two-color laser fields

An orthogonally polarized two-color (OTC) field of frequency ratio 1 : 2 is known to generate both odd and even harmonic spectra in the mutually orthogonal directions of the fundamental and the second-harmonic fields, respectively. Recollision angles of an ionized electron driven back to its parent ion by an OTC field are inferred from the intensity ratio of odd and even harmonics, where the relative phase delays between the two-color fields can be used in time-resolved measurements on a subcycle time scale. Here, we present the ab initio, many-electron calculation of time-resolved recollision angles of noble-gas atoms driven by an OTC field, based on the time-dependent density-functional theory. Our results agree well with experimental data by Shafir et al. in Nat. Phys. 5, 412 (2009) of helium atom and New J. Phys. 12, 073032 (2010) of neon atom.
