Inverse Determination of Aeroheating and Charring Ablator Response

The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) was protected during its Mars atmospheric entry by an instrumented heatshield that used NASA's Phenolic Impregnated Carbon Ablator (PICA). PICA is a lightweight carbon fiber/polymeric resin material that offers excellent performances for protecting probes during planetary entry. The Mars Entry Descent and Landing Instrument (MEDLI) suite on MSL offers unique in-flight validation data for models of atmospheric entry and material response. MEDLI recorded, among others, time-resolved in-depth temperature data of PICA using thermocouple sensors assembled in the MEDLI Integrated Sensor Plugs (MISP). These measurements have been widely used in the literature as a validation benchmark for state-of-the-art ablation codes. The objective of this work is to perform an inverse estimate of the MSL heatshield material properties and aerothermal environment during Mars entry from the MISP flight data.

Bayesian Inference and the Effects of Varying Uncertainty Models in Charring Ablator Calibration and Uncertainty Quantification Problems

The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) vehicle utilized a heat shield constructed from NASA’s Phenolic-Impregnated Carbon Ablator (PICA) material to protect the main structure from the high enthalpy environment encountered during hypersonic atmospheric entry. During the vehicle’s descent through Martian atmosphere, multiple thermocouples embedded within the heat shield captured in-depth material temperature data that allow for studies to be conducted on current material response reconstruction tools. In the present work, material temperature data obtained from thermocouples within the MISP-4 plug (MEDLI (Mars Science Laboratory Entry, Descent, and Landing Instrument) Integrated Sensor Plug) are utilized in the calibration of Theoretical Ablative Composite for Open Testing (TACOT) model parameters in conjunction with NASA’s Porous material Analysis Toolbox (PATO) through Bayesian inference where uncertainty due to parametric, modeling, and experimental sources is simultaneously quantified. Prior to the study, a sensitivity analysis is performed through computation of the robust Sobol indices in an effort to study the relationship between input space and model response and to reduce the dimensionality of the statistical inverse problem. The Bayesian inference methodology necessitates an a-priori choice to be made for the uncertainty model for which numerous possibilities are available. Across most works, however, only basic additive or multiplicative models are utilized with pre-defined magnitudes of uncertainty based on a-priori knowledge or to-be-calibrated multipliers of static covariance matrix structures. The present effort explores the effects of informed uncertainty models, ones with temporal dependence that are simultaneously calibrated through Bayesian inference, on calibrated results for parameters that make up the uncertain input space.

A users manual for a revised version of the Langley charring ablator program

A computer program is described that will compute the transient response of a thermal protection material to a prescribed heat input at the surface. The program has the capability of analyzing pyrolysis gas chemical kinetics in detail and treating pyrolysis reactions-in-depth. Deposition of solid products produced by chemical reactions in the gas phase is included in the analysis. An outline is given for the theory. detailed operating instructions for the computer program are included.

Computer Simulation of Ablator Charring

Transient response of thermal-protection material to heat applied to surface calculated using CHAP III computer program. Used to analyze chemical kinetics of pyrolysis gas in detail and examine pyrolysis reactions-in-depth. Analysis includes deposition of solid products produced by chemical reactions in gas phase. Uses modeling technique that approximates wide range of ablation problems. CHAP III written in FORTRAN IV.

Carborane Dopant Strengthens Pitch Char

Addition of small amount of soluble, organic boron compound to matrix precursor of carbon-fiber/carbon-matrix (carbon/carbon) composite increases strength and toughness of composite. Compound catalyzes graphitization of matrix, giving rise to greater degree of graphitization at lower processing temperature. Technique used to advantage in carbon/carbon materials requiring lower temperature processing, such as those with inhibited matrices or materials sensitive to changes in fiber properties.
