Local conformations and heterogeneities in structures and dynamics of isotactic polypropylene adsorbed onto carbon fiber

Carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polymers (CFRPs) have experienced widespread use in various industries. One of the most important parameters that controls the macroscopic property of CFRPs is the interface between a polymer matrix and CF. There is growing evidence to suggest the formation of a bound polymer layer (BPL), i.e., polymer chains that physically adsorb on a filler surface. However, this interface is always in contact with the thicker part of a polymer matrix, rendering its understanding a difficult task. Therein, we use CF-reinforced isotactic polypropylene (iPP) as a rational CFRP. To characterize the BPL on the CF surface, we extracted it from the CFRP using solvent-rinsing with p-xylene. The physical and thermal properties of the BPL were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis, while its microscopic structures and dynamics were probed by small-angle neutron scattering and quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) techniques. Subsequently, we employed atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to complement the QENS results above the bulk melting temperature and reveal details that were experimentally inaccessible. In this work, we observed that the degree of crystallinity of the BPL was quite lower than the bulk, while the melting temperature of the BPL remained the same as the bulks. Within the given length and time scales probed by QENS and MD, we also observed that most of the bound chains were mobile, with the formation of a high-density region (less than 1 nm in thickness) near the CF surface. The segmental dynamics of the bound chains probed by both QENS and MD were also much faster than those of the free chains, possibly due to the presence of a free surface region at the topmost surface of the BPL. Furthermore, the MD results demonstrated that the backbone chains and side groups lie nearly flat on the CF surface, which is the driving force for the flattening process of the iPP BPL to overcome the conformational entropy loss in the total free energy.

Pressure-Induced Spectroscopic Changes in a Californium 1D Material Are Twice as Large as Found in the Holmium Analog

Here, in this study, the synthesis, characterization, and pressure response of a 1D californium mellitate (mellitate = 1,2,3,4,5,6-benzenehexacarboxylate) coordination polymer, Cf 2 (mell)(H 2 O) 10 ·4H 2 O (Cf-1), are reported. The Cf–O lengths within the crystal structure are compared to its gadolinium (Gd-1) and holmium (Ho-1) analogs as well. These data show that the average Cf–O bond distance is slightly longer than the average Gd–O bond, consistent with trends in effective ionic radii. UV–vis-NIR absorption spectra as a function of pressure were collected using diamond-anvil techniques for both Cf-1 and Ho-1. These experiments show that the Cf(III) f → f transitions have a stronger dependence on pressure than that of the holmium analog. In the former case, the shift is nearly linear with applied pressure and averages 6.6 cm –1 /GPa, whereas in the latter, it is <3 cm –1 /GPa.

Design Principles and Routes for Calcium Alkoxyaluminate Electrolytes

Multivalent-ion battery technologies are increasingly attractive options for meeting diverse energy storage needs. Calcium ion batteries (CIB) are particularly appealing candidates for their earthly abundance, high theoretical volumetric energy density, and relative safety advantages. Here, at present, only a few Ca-ion electrolyte systems are reported to reversibly plate at room temperature: for example, aluminates and borates, including Ca[TPFA] 2 , where [TPFA] - = [Al(OC(CF 3 ) 3 ) 4 ] - and Ca[B(hfip) 4 ] 2 , [B(hfip) 4 ] 2 – = [B(OCH(CF 3 ) 2 ) 4 ] - . Analyzing the structure of these salts reveals a common theme: the prevalent use of a weakly coordinating anion (WCA) consisting of a tetracoordinate aluminum/boron (Al/B) center with fluorinated alkoxides. Leveraging the concept of theory-aided design, we report an innovative, one-pot synthesis of two new calcium-ion electrolyte salts (Ca[Al(tftb) 4 ] 2 , Ca[Al(hftb) 4 ] 2 ) and two reported salts (Ca[Al(hfip) 4 ] 2 and Ca[TPFA] 2 ) where hfip = (-OCH(CF 3 ) 2 ), tftb = (-OC(CF 3 )(Me) 2 ), hftb = (-OC(CF 3 ) 2 (Me)), [TPFA] - = [Al(OC(CF 3 ) 3 ) 4 ] - . We also reveal the dependence of Coulombic efficiency on their inherent propensity for cation–anion coordination.

Routes to Acetonitrile-Supported Trifluoromethyl and Perfluorometallacyclopentane Complexes of Cobalt

In this report, synthetic routes to [(MeCN) 3 Co(CF 3 ) 3 ], [Co(MeCN) 6 ][PF 6 ] 2 , [(MeCN) 4 Co(CF 3 ) 2 ][PF 6 ], [(MeCN) 2 (py)Co(CF 3 ) 3 ], [(MeCN)(py) 2 Co(CF 3 ) 3 ], and [(MeCN) 4 Co(C 4 F 8 )][PF 6 ] are described. The unusual [(py) 2 (CF 3 ) 2 Co(μ-CH 2 CN)] 2 has also been identified as a decomposition product of [(py) 2 (MeCN)Co(CF 3 ) 3 ]. In conclusion, the aforementioned compounds, all of which have been characterized by X-ray crystallography, are expected to serve as useful precursors to cobalt trifluoromethyl- and C 4 F 8 -containing derivatives.

Chemical bonding in actinyl( V / VI ) dipyriamethyrin complexes for the actinide series from americium to californium: a computational investigation

The separation of minor actinides in their dioxocation (i.e., actinyl) form in high-valence oxidation states requires efficient ligands for their complexation. Here, in this work, we evaluate the complexation properties of actinyls including americyl, curyl, berkelyl, and californyl in their pentavalent and hexavalent oxidation states with the dipyriamethyrin ligand (L) using density functional theory calculations. The calculated bond parameters show shorter An&#x2550O yl bonds with covalent character and longer An–N bonds with ionic character. The bonding between the actinyl cation and the ligand anion shows a flow of charges from the ligand to actinyl in all [An V/VI O 2 –L] 1–/0 complexes. However, across the series, backdonation of charges from the metal to the ligand becomes prominent and stabilizes the complexes. The thermodynamic parameters in the gas phase and solution suggest that the complex formation reaction is spontaneous for [Cf V/VI O 2 –L] 1–/0 complexes and spontaneous at elevated temperatures (>298.15 K) for all other complexes. Spin–orbit corrections have a quantitative impact while the overall trend remains the same. Energy decomposition analysis (EDA) reveals that the interaction between actinyl and the ligand is mainly due to electrostatic contributions that decrease from Am to Cf along with an increase in orbital contributions due to the backdonation of charges from the actinyl metal center to the ligand that greatly stabilizes the Cf complex. The repulsive Pauli energy contribution is observed to increase in the case of [An V O 2 –L] 1– complexes from Am to Cf while a decrease is observed among [An VI O 2 –L] 0 complexes, showing minimum repulsion in [Cf VI O 2 –L] 0 complex formation. Overall, the hexavalent actinyl complexes show greater stability (increasing from Am to Cf) than their pentavalent counterparts.

Strong mutual increase in the efficiency of isotope-selective laser IR dissociation of molecules under nonequilibrium thermodynamic conditions of the compression shock under irradiation in a bimolecular mixture

We have revealed a strong (by a factor of 2 to 5) mutual increase in the yield of IR molecular dissociation (by the example of CF{sub 2}HCl and CF{sub 3}Br) and a significant (by a factor of 1.5 to 3) lowering of dissociation thresholds in the nonequilibrium thermodynamic conditions of compression shock in the irradiation of the molecules by resonance IR laser radiation in the bimolecular mixture in comparison with their individual irradiation. This opens up the possibility to perform efficient isotope-selective IR dissociation of molecules at lower excitation energy densities (Φ ⩽ 1.5 – 2.0 J cm{sup −2}) and thereby to improve the dissociation selectivity. This was demonstrated by the example of chlorine- and bromine-isotope selective dissociation of the specified molecules, which are characterised by quite small (less than 0.25 cm{sup −1}) isotope shifts in the IR vibrational absorption spectra excited by laser radiation. The enrichment coefficients K {sub enr}({sup 35}Cl / {sup 37}Cl) = 0.90 ± 0.05 in the residual CF{sub 2}HCl gas and K {sub enr}({sup 79}Br / {sup 81}Br) in the resultant Br{sub 2} product are obtained when the CF{sub 2}HCl : CF{sub 3}Br = 1 : 1 molecular mixture and CF{sub 3}Br molecules, respectively, are irradiated by the 9R(30) CO{sub 2} laser line (frequency, 1084.635 cm{sup −1}) at an energy density Φ ≈ 1.3 J cm{sup −2}. New ASME Section III, Division 5 Creep-Fatigue Design Rules Based on EPP and SMT Approaches

The integrated elastic-perfectly plastic (EPP) and simplified model test (SMT) creep-fatigue (CF) design methodology, referred to as the EPP-SMT method, is being developed as an alternative for CF evaluation in the design of pressure boundary components for high-temperature reactors. This report reviews the conceptual basis of the EPP-SMT methodology, summarizes the SMT experimental development efforts and results, and provides the technical basis for finalizing the EPP-SMT CF design curves for Alloy 617, based on a combined experimental and numerical approach conducted in FY 2024. This report presents the effect of hold time on the CF design curves for Alloy 617 at elevated temperatures. It includes proposed EPP-SMT CF design curves and tabulated values for continuous cycling, along with the effects of maximum hold time, for the use of this EPP-SMT CF evaluation method.

Tuning Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Polydimethylsiloxane with Carbon Fibers

In order to meet the needs of constantly advancing technologies, fabricating materials with improved properties and predictable behavior has become vital. To that end, we have prepared polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer samples filled with carbon nanofibers (CFs) at 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 CF loadings (w/w) to investigate and optimize the amount of filler needed for fabrication with improved mechanical properties. Samples were prepared using easy, cost-efficient mechanical mixing to combine the PDMS and CF filler and were then characterized by chemical (FTIR), mechanical (hardness and tension), and physical (swelling, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and coefficient of thermal expansion) analyses to determine the material properties. We found that hardness and thermal stability increased predictably, while the ultimate strength and toughness both decreased. Repeated tension caused the CF-filled PDMS samples to lose significant toughness with increasing CF loadings. The hardness and thermal degradation temperature with 4 wt.% CF loading in PDMS increased more than 40% and 25 °C, respectively, compared with the pristine PDMS sample. Additionally, dilatometer measurements showed a 20% decrease in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) with a small amount of CF filler in PDMS. In this study, we were able to show the mechanical and thermal properties of PDMS can be tuned with good confidence using CFs.

Development and testing of a fission-like neutron field for dosimetry and instrument calibrations based on deuterium-tritium generator

For nearly five decades 252 Cf sources have been used for testing and calibration over a wide range of neutron detection devices used for nuclear safety and radiation protection. However, the vastly increased cost of 252 Cf sources, its short half-life, and concerns about future shortage have prompted nuclear facilities and radiological calibration laboratories that rely on high-intensity neutron sources to seek alternatives. There appear to be no other radionuclide neutron sources that would match “like-to-like” 252 Cf performance characteristics. Alternatives of producing a fission-like neutron spectrum based on commercially available deuterium-tritium (D-T) generators, and without any fissionable materials or beryllium, have been explored. This paper describes efforts of designing the spectrum shaping assembly, its construction and installation. The produced neutron field was evaluated both from the perspective of the neutron fluence spectrum and the resulting dosimetric outcome. Finally, it was tested for practical application by examining response of various health physics instruments and personal monitoring devices in comparison to the response of those devices when exposed to 252 Cf. In conclusion, the response of survey-type instruments tested within the prototype, surrogate fission, reference field are acceptably close to their response in the targeted 252 Cf field.

Boron‐Doped Nano‐Crystalline Coated Carbon Fibers for Phasic Dopamine Sensing

Real time, chronic electrochemical detection of neurotransmitters will provide a positive step in the treatment and understanding of neurological disease. However, current electrodes using carbon fibers (CF) fail to perform chronically. While diamond-based coatings show promise in improving their longevity, achieving a uniform layer of such coatings on CFs is challenging, and the electrodes often lose sensitivity after coating. In this work, a complete and uniform boron-doped nanocrystalline material grown in a diamond reactor (B-NCD) was developed to coat CF microelectrodes for neurochemical sensing. The coating was characterized electrically, optically, mechanically, and chemically. The B-NCD coated CF electrodes were able to detect phasic dopamine at a sensitivity comparable to the most widely used alternatives (uncoated and PEDOT:Nafion coated CFs). During biofouling testing, the B-NCD coated CF electrodes demonstrated better stability than uncoated CFs and comparable performance to PEDOT:Nafion coated CFs. Moreover, B-NCD exhibited no signs of degradation during consecutive FSCV applications, while uncoated and PEDOT:Nafion coated CF electrodes degraded significantly over time. Furthermore, the B-NCD coating supported the survival and development of neurons and astrocytes in vitro, exhibited excellent adhesion and durability during mechanical bending testing, and enabled successful in vivo recording of phasic dopamine release in the rat brain. Overall, B-NCD coated CFs present as an ideal candidate for chronic, flexible neural implantable electrodes for long-term neurochemical monitoring.

Solvated Nickel Complexes as Stoichiometric and Catalytic Perfluoroalkylation Agents**

Abstract The acetonitrile‐solvated [(MeCN)Ni(C 2 F 5 ) 3 ] − was prepared in order to compare and contrast its reactivity with the known [(MeCN)Ni(CF 3 ) 3 ] − towards organic electrophiles. Both [(MeCN)Ni(CF 3 ) 3 ] − and [(MeCN)Ni(C 2 F 5 ) 3 ] − successfully react with aryl iodonium and diazonium salts as well as alkynyl iodonium salts to give fluoroalkylated organic products. Electrochemical analysis of [(MeCN)Ni II (C 2 F 5 ) 3 ] − suggests that, upon electro‐oxidation to [(MeCN) n Ni III (C 2 F 5 ) 3 ], reductive homolysis of a perfluoroethyl radical occurs, with the concomitant formation of [(MeCN) 2 Ni II (C 2 F 5 ) 2 ]. Catalytic C−H trifluoromethylations of electron‐rich arenes were successfully achieved using either [(MeCN)Ni(CF 3 ) 3 ] − or the related [Ni(CF 3 ) 4 ] 2− . Stoichiometric reactions of the solvated nickel complexes reveal that “ligandless” nickel is exceptionally capable of serving as reservoir of CF 3 groups under catalytically relevant conditions.

Formation of a Strong Heterogeneous Aluminum Lewis Acid on Silica

Abstract Al(OC(CF 3 ) 3 )(PhF) reacts with silanols present on partially dehydroxylated silica to form well‐defined ≡SiOAl(OC(CF 3 ) 3 ) 2 (O(Si≡) 2 ) ( 1 ). 27 Al NMR and DFT calculations with a small cluster model to approximate the silica surface show that the aluminum in 1 adopts a distorted trigonal bipyramidal coordination geometry by coordinating to a nearby siloxane bridge and a fluorine from the alkoxide. Fluoride ion affinity (FIA) calculations follow experimental trends and show that 1 is a stronger Lewis acid than B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 and Al(OC(CF 3 ) 3 )(PhF) but is weaker than Al(OC(CF 3 ) 3 ) and i Pr 3 Si + . Cp 2 Zr(CH 3 ) 2 reacts with 1 to form [Cp 2 ZrCH 3 ][≡SiOAl(OC(CF 3 ) 3 ) 2 (CH 3 )] ( 3 ) by methide abstraction. This reactivity pattern is similar to reactions of organometallics with the proposed strong Lewis acid sites present on Al 2 O 3 .

A Molecular Compound for Highly Selective Purification of Ethylene

Purification of C 2 H 4 from an C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 mixture is one of the most challenging separation processes, which is achieved mainly through energy-intensive, cryogenic distillation in industry. Sustainable, non-distillation methods are highly desired as alternatives. We discovered that the fluorinated bis(pyrazolyl)borate ligand supported copper(I) complex {[(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu} 3 has features very desirable in an olefin–paraffin separation material. It binds ethylene exclusively over ethane generating [(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu(C 2 H 4 ). This molecular compound exhibits extremely high and record ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 gas separation selectivity, affording high purity (>99.5 %) ethylene that can be readily desorbed from separation columns. In-situ PXRD provides a “live” picture of the reversible conversion between [(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu(C 2 H 4 ) and the ethylene-free sorbent in the solid-state, driven by the presence or removal of C 2 H 4 . As a result, molecular structures of trinuclear {[(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu} 3 and mononuclear [(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu(C 2 H 4 ) are also presented.

Carbon fiber synthesis from pitch: Insights from ReaxFF based molecular dynamics simulations

Despite the potential to lowering fabrication costs of pitch-based carbon fiber (CF) compared to polyacrylonitrile-based CF, large scale utilization is currently limited by the complexity in manufacturing. This is mainly due to the lack of consistency between the pitch structure/chemistry and CF properties under different processing conditions. Here, we employed full atomistic simulations based on reactive force fields to investigate the conversion of pitch precursors to CFs. Additionally, it was found that at the carbonization stage, the consumption rates of precursors, gas formations, and solid yields (carbonized CFs) are all dependent on the composition and arrangement of molecular moieties in the precursor. Specifically, precursors with sp 3 carbons in the cata-condensed core area have limited decomposition pathways (i.e., limited reaction sites), which leads to the formation of carbonized CFs with similar compositions. Furthermore, carbonized CFs possess distinct structural characteristics, and finally lead to the formation of CFs with different moduli. By analyzing CF crystallinity and elemental composition, general rationales are proposed for the selection of optimal precursors and processing conditions, and thus shed lights on parameter screening during industrial CF synthesis. For instance, inclusion of sp 3 carbons in cata- condensed rings can be preferred over the presence of sp 3 carbons on side chains.

Engineering mechanical and thermomechanical performance in additive manufacturing–Compression molded composites through multiplexed extrusion

Traditional extrusion-based additive manufacturing is limited to single material systems, restricting the multifunctional properties of composites. For this work to overcome this limitation, multiplexed additive manufacturing–compression molding (AM-CM) was employed to fabricate multi-material thermoplastic composites with spatially tailored architectures. Neat acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and 20 wt% carbon-fiber reinforced ABS (CF-ABS) were co-extruded through a core–sheath nozzle to produce hybrid composites with neat ABS as sheath (30-50 wt%) and CF-ABS as core (50 – 70 wt%). The results show that the hybrid composites have balance of mechanical and thermomechanical performance. The tensile strength and modulus of hybrid composites exhibited a 61–95% and 173–473% increase compared to neat ABS with increases in CF-ABS content whereas the impact resistance improved by 41% compared to CF-ABS at 50 wt% ABS. Additionally, hybrid composites showed significant reduction (54 - 70%) in creep strain at 100 °C compared to neat ABS. These findings demonstrate that multiplexed AM-CM enables tunable structure–property relationships, reducing CF-ABS usage up to 50 wt% while maintaining balanced stiffness, toughness, and creep resistance.
