Wabash CarbonSAFE established that commercial-scale CO 2 storage in the Potosi Dolomite –Maquoketa Group storage complex associated with the Wabash Valley Resources (WVR) plant site near Terre Haute, IN is highly feasible. The CarbonSAFE project team performed this evaluation through extensive data acquisition and analysis including 2D seismic reflection data, wireline logs, well testing, and core/cuttings from the Wabash #1 stratigraphic test well (now plugged and abandoned). This document summarizes work detailed in separate Wabash CarbonSAFE reports and consolidates the geologic characterization, well testing, and storage complex modeling results for the Mt. Simon Sandstone and Potosi Dolomite, two distinct reservoirs characterized at the Wabash CarbonSAFE project site. The report then presents recommendations for the next steps for site characterization, identifies data gaps for future activities, and provides an overall assessment of site potential.
NETL and Ramaco will collaborate to characterize domestic coal, beneficiated coal, and coal byproducts to evaluate these materials for rare earth element (REE) content and ease of extraction. Ramaco will provide samples of coal, beneficiated coal, and coal byproducts to NETL, as well as provide research expertise on coal extraction and processing. NETL will characterize these feedstocks using the chemical/physical methods being utilized in its research laboratories. The objectives of this project are: identify promising coal-related REE reserves by testing and analysis of core samples from coal bearing formations; provide insights and expertise into opportunities for the extraction of REEs and other value-added products from domestic coal; and collect data that will be used to create quantitative modeling tools for predicting the likelihood of successful prospecting for REEs in coal, beneficiated and processed coal, and related geologic formation.
Stakeholder engagement is considered a critical component for successful deployment of Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS). Engagement builds awareness and understanding of the implications, both local and global, that deploying this technology entails. The CarbonSAFE Illinois – Macon County project presents unique challenges for engaging stakeholders as they have various and diverse options and perspectives that vary in influence and personal importance.
This report presents components of a commercialize strategy to develop CCS operations in the region of the CarbonSAFE Macon County project. The report describes regional business considerations for specific business plans necessary for successful implementation at commercial scale. This report also provides a brief summary of the regional business climate for CCS in the study region.
This extensive report describes the sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy of the Mt Simon Sandstone, seismic reflection, Precambrian basement geochronology, petrophysical analyses, reservoir properties and petrographic characterization based on data collected during drilling and 2D seismic surveys conducted as part of CarbonSAFE Illinois - Macon County.
This is the end of well report of drilling and data collection activities associated with the TR McMillen #2 well as part of CarbonSAFE Illinois - Macon County.
This report describes the design, procedures and operations implemented in T.R. McMillen #2 for an extensive well testing program that included Step Rate, Vertical Interference, Pressure Falloff/Buiolup, and Multirate tests.
This report describes the analysis of Step Rate, Vertical Interference, Pressure Falloff/Buildup, and Multirate tests conducted at the T.R. McMillen #2 Well Drilled for the CarbonSAFE Illinois -- Macon Project.
This report presents the workflow, processes and data input used in developing geostatic models and conducting dynamic simulations for the geological setting in the CarbonSAFE Illinois - Macon County project. A range of simulation scenarios are described to assess injection characteristics and behavior of injected CO 2 and overall storage performance of the site.
This report assesses the technical and economic opportunities for CO 2 capture retrofit to existing fossil fuel power plants, and identifies plants with most potential for CCS deployment in the region surrounding the CarbonSAFE Illinois - Macon County project area.
Research documented in this report includes (1) resource estimates for the Lower Mt. Simon Sandstone in the Illinois Basin, including storage and cost estimates, and (2) regional roadmaps for carbon capture and storage (CCS) deployment using five capture facilities throughout the Illinois Basin: Archer Daniels Midland Decatur (ADM Decatur), Abbott Power Plant, City Water, Light, and Power (CWLP), One Earth Energy, and Prairie State Energy Campus (PSEC). Resource estimates were developed using the Sequestration of CO 2 Tool (SCO2T) and data provided by the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS), and regional roadmaps for CCS deployment were developed in SimCCS Gateway, a decision-support tool for designing CCS infrastructure.
This report presents a screening level study of cost estimates for transporting CO 2 via pipeline from five separate sources to a proposed injection well near Mt Auburn IL (Christian County). The basis for the cost estimates is also presented.
This document aims to summarize the findings of the CarbonSAFE – Macon County project to help a commercial entity undertake a private CCS operation. Components include stakeholder engagement, legal, policy, and regulatory aspects, business considerations, and infrastructure assessment.
Sandia National Laboratories performed tests to address the potential vulnerability concerns of a coupled High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) inducing secondary coupling onto critical instrumentation and control cables in a nuclear power plant, with specific focus on early-time HEMP. Three types of receiving cables in nine configurations were tested to determine transfer functions between two electrically separated cables referenced to the common mode input current on the transmitting cable. One type of transfer function related the input short circuit current and resulting open circuit voltage on the receiving cable. The other transfer function related the input short circuit current and the resulting short circuit current on the receiving cable. A 500 A standard HEMP waveform was input into the transfer functions to calculate peak coupling values on the receiving cables. The highest level of coupling using the standard waveform occurred when cables were in direct contact, with a peak short circuit current of 85 A and open circuit voltage of 9.8 kV, while configurations with separated cables predicted coupling levels of less than 5 A or 500 V.
