Atomic Alignment in PbS Nanocrystal Superlattices with Compact Inorganic Ligands via Reversible Oriented Attachment of Nanocrystals

Nanocrystals (NCs) serve as versatile building blocks for the creation of functional materials with NC self-assembly offering opportunities to enable novel material properties. Here, in this work, we demonstrate that PbS NCs functionalized with strongly negatively charged metal chalcogenide complex (MCC) ligands, such as Sn 2 S 6 4– and AsS 4 3– , can self-assemble into all-inorganic superlattices with both long-range superlattice translational and atomic-lattice orientational order. Structural characterizations reveal that the NCs adopt an unexpected edge-to-edge alignment, and numerical simulation clarifies that orientational order is thermodynamically stabilized by many-body ion correlations originating from the dense electrolyte. Furthermore, we show that the superlattices of Sn 2 S 6 4– -functionalized PbS NCs can be fully disassembled back into the colloidal state, which is highly unusual for orientationally attached superlattices with atomic-lattice alignment. The reversible oriented attachment of NCs, enabling their dynamic assembly and disassembly into effectively single-crystalline superstructures, offers a pathway toward designing reconfigurable materials with adaptive and controllable electronic and optoelectronic properties.

Normalized Solar-Induced Fluorescence Responds Earlier Than Vegetation Indices to the 2019 North China Plain Drought

Recently, solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) from satellites has shown potential for evaluating vegetation status and stress responses. Fluorescence quantum yield ($Φ_F$) is essentially linked to vegetation stress. However, the complex physiological and structural responses of SIF and $Φ_F$ to drought need further study. This study normalized SIF as SIFn to account for angular variations and fluctuations in photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), aiming for more accurate drought monitoring. SIFn anomalies were compared to historical baselines (2019–2021 averages) of vegetation indices (VIs), raw SIF, and $Φ_F$ during a 2019 drought in the North China Plain (NCP). Here, the results show SIFn provides an effective method for drought monitoring, showing the earliest decline compared to raw SIF, VIs, and $Φ_F$. In the first two weeks of drought, SIFn decreased by 8.2%, 7.0%, 12.5%, and 8.2% across the four NCP subdivisions. SIFn outperformed other indicators, proving sensitive to early drought detection. SIFn was also examined for tracking drought alleviation by rainfall. The uncertainty under different viewing geometries was quantified. SIFn anomalies showed a strong correlation with rainfall anomalies (R: 0.45 ~ 0.52) and meteorological factors like PAR (R: 0.80 ~ 0.84) and relative humidity (R:0.52 ~ 0.54). The correlation of near-infrared reflectance (NIRv) and $Φ_F$ anomalies with SIF was weak during drought onset (R: 0.16 ~ 0.32) but strong at the end (R: 0.83 ~ 0.87). These suggest both canopy structure (mainly characterized by NIRv) and vegetation chlorophyll ($Φ_F$) are impacted by drought and influence SIF at different stages.

Anomalous temperature-dependent magnetization in the nearly collinear antiferromagnet Y 2 Co 3

Y 2 Co 3 is a newly discovered antiferromagnetic (AFM) compound with distorted kagome layers. Here, previous investigations via bulk magnetization measurements suggested a complex non-collinear magnetic behavior, with magnetic moments primarily anti-aligned along the b axis and some canting towards the ac plane. In this study, we report the magnetic structure of Y 2 Co 3 to be an A-type AFM structure with ferromagnetic (FM) interactions within the distorted kagome plane and an inter-plane antiferromagnetic interaction, as determined by single crystal neutron diffraction. The magnetic moments align along the b axis, with minimal canting towards the c axis, at odds with the previous interpretation of bulk magnetization measurements. The magnetic moments on the two distinct Co sites are (0, -0.68, 0) μB and (0, 1.25, 0.07) μ B . We attribute the previously reported ”non-collinear” behavior to the considerable temperature dependence of itinerant AFM exchange interactions, induced by thermal contraction along the b axis. Additionally, our examination of lattice constants through pressure studies reveals compensating effects on FM and AFM interactions, resulting in negligible pressure dependence of T N .

Experimental Definition of the S = 1 π vs S = 2 σ Reactivity and S = 2 Character in the Ground State of an S = 1 Fe IV O Complex

Iron(IV)-oxo intermediates found in iron enzymes and artificial catalysts are competent for H atom abstraction in catalytic cycles. For S = 2 intermediates, both axial and equatorial approaches are well-established. The mechanism for S = 1 sites is not as well understood: an equatorial approach is more energetically favorable, and an axial approach requires crossing from the S = 1 to the S = 2 surface. Here, in this study, we use 1s2p resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) and Fe L-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy on the S = 1 [Fe IV O(TMC)(CH3CN)] 2+ and observe both S = 2 and S = 1 final states, which enables the experimental evaluation of the energetics of the axial and equatorial reactivity of an S = 1 Fe IV O center on its S = 2 vs S = 1 surface. The observation of S = 2 final states in the RIXS spectrum demonstrates significant S = 2 character spin–orbit mixed into the S = 1 ground state.

Ultrafast population and structural dynamics of a Ni-bipyridine photoredox catalyst reveal a significant deactivation pathway

The ultrafast excited state pathways and dynamics of NiII-bipyridine complexes influence the yield of photochemical processes involved in their catalytic cross-coupling reactions. Here we present ultrafast Ni K x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and x-ray solution scattering (XSS) of a NiII-bipyridine aryl halide complex, [Ni(t-Bubpy)(o-tol)Br], to quantify the excited state population dynamics and structural changes of the pre-catalyst. Due to the local spin-sensitivity of XES, the population dynamics of metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) and metal-centered (MC) excited states is established. A rapid ground state recovery pathway is newly identified, representing a significant deactivation pathway during photocatalysis. Furthermore, the pseudotetrahedral structure of the long-lived MC excited state is unambiguously identified and refined by XSS. The results advance our understanding of the ultrafast relaxation mechanisms that impact the photocatalytic mechanism and yield for NiII-bipyridine aryl halide cross-coupling catalysts.

Quantitative Dissection of Agrobacterium Virulence to Generate a Synthetic Ti Plasmid

Agrobacterium is not only a costly plant pathogen but is also an essential tool for plant transformation. Though Agrobacterium-mediated transformation (AMT) has been heavily studied, its polygenic nature and complex transcriptional regulation make identification of the genetic basis of transformational efficiency difficult through traditional genetic and bioinformatic approaches. Here, we use a bottom-up synthetic approach to systematically engineer the tumor-inducing plasmid (pTi), wherein the majority of virulence machinery is encoded. Using a validated toolkit to control Agrobacterium gene expression in planta, we perform a quantitative dissection of AMT to investigate the contributions of critical vir-genes at different expression levels. We construct a synthetic pTi capable of transient plant and stable fungal transformation and characterize bottlenecks and solutions for complex polygenic synthetic pTi designs. Our reductionist approach demonstrates how bottom-up engineering can be used to dissect and elucidate the genetic underpinnings of complex biological traits, laying the foundation for future engineering to establish full synthetic control over the critical process of AMT.
