Materials properties numerical database system established and operational at CINDAS/Purdue University

A computerized comprehensive numerical database system on the mechanical, thermophysical, electronic, electrical, magnetic, optical, and other properties of various types of technologically important materials such as metals, alloys, composites, dielectrics, polymers, and ceramics has been established and operational at the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) of Purdue University. This is an on-line, interactive, menu-driven, user-friendly database system. Users can easily search, retrieve, and manipulate the data from the database system without learning special query language, special commands, standardized names of materials, properties, variables, etc. It enables both the direct mode of search/retrieval of data for specified materials, properties, independent variables, etc., and the inverted mode of search/retrieval of candidate materials that meet a set of specified requirements (which is the computer-aided materials selection). It enables also tabular and graphical displays and on-line data manipulations such as units conversion, variables transformation, statistical analysis, etc., of the retrieved data. The development, content, accessibility, etc., of the database system are presented and discussed.

Mishaps with oxygen in NASA operations.

Oxygen safety programs were conducted, taking into consideration a review of the hazards, the available data concerning the failure of components and systems, and the oxygen handling procedures followed by NASA and its contractors. Information is presented regarding a substantial number of oxygen mishaps together with safety regulations aimed at reducing the accident probability. The information was used to establish categories of events causing the mishap. These categories include materials incompatibility deficiency, materials failure, design deficiency, cleaning deficiency, and procedural deficiencies. Mishaps are generally caused by a number of interacting factors.

Fast electrons in small solar flares

This review summarizes both the direct spacecraft observations of nonrelativistic solar electrons, and observations of the X-ray and radio emission generated by these particles at the sun and in the interplanetary medium. These observations bear on the basic astrophysical process of particle acceleration in tenuous plasmas. We find that in many small solar flares, the nearly 5-100 keV electrons accelerated during flash phase constitute the bulk of the total flare energy. Thus the basic flare mechanism in these flares essentially converts the available flare energy into fast electrons. These electrons may produce the other flare electromagnetic emissions through their interactions with the solar atmosphere. In large proton flares these electrons may provide the energy to eject material from the sun and to create a shock wave which could accelerate nuclei and electrons to much higher energies.

Development of test methods for scale model simulation of aerial applications in the NASA Langley Vortex Facility

Methods have been developed at the Langley Vortex Research Facility to simulate and measure the deposition patterns of aerially applied sprays and granular materials by means of tests with small-scale models of agricultural and dynamically scaled test particles. Interactions between the aircraft wake and the dispersed particles are studied with the aim of modifying wake characteristics and dispersal techniques in order to increase swath width, improve deposition pattern uniformity, and minimize drift. This paper examines the particle sizing analysis, test methods for particle dispersal from the model aircraft, and measurement and computer analysis of test deposition patterns. Results that indicate improved control of chemical drift by winglets are presented to demonstrate test methods.

Numerical simulations of positively-biased probes and dielectric-conductor disks in a plasma

Plasma densities in the low-earth orbit range may be sufficient to cause difficulties for spacecraft operating at high voltages in this environment. The present investigation is concerned with the results of a continuing effort to develop a particle-in-cell (PIC), cylindrically-symmetric, 2-1/2 dimensional, self-consistent numerical simulation code. The simulation has the objective to explore the interactions of an ambient plasma with a conducting disk, which may be partially covered by a dielectric material. The disk and the surrounding dielectric material represent a hole in an insulator covering a conductor. Attention is given to a review of the simulation model, plain disk calculations, the disk and dielectric configuration, and the 'pinhole' effect.

Computer-aided testing of pilot response to critical in-flight events

This research on pilot response to critical in-flight events employs a unique methodology including an interactive computer-aided scenario-testing system. Navigation displays, instrument-panel displays, and assorted textual material are presented on a touch-sensitive CRT screen. Problem diagnosis scenarios, destination-diversion scenarios and combined destination/diagnostic tests are available. A complete time history of all data inquiries and responses is maintained. Sample results of diagnosis scenarios obtained from testing 38 licensed pilots are presented and discussed.

Trapped particle absorption by the ring of Jupiter

The ring systems of Jupiter and Saturn, and their interaction with the magnetosphere were studied. Opportunities to improve the understanding of the sweeping effect of orbiting material on trapped radiation, and the use of this process to gain insight on both the trapped radiation and the target material are outlined. Within the cosmogony of Hannes Alfven, this mechanism is also the key to understanding the formation of many of the features of the Saturnian rings. A better understanding of the sweeping effect would also help to clarify this process.

Preliminary study: Moisture-polymer interaction. Stuby objectives

The problems associated with mathematically modeling water-module interaction phenomena, including sorption and desorption, diffusion, and permeation are discussed. With reliable analytical models, an extensive materials data base, and solar radiation surface meteorological observations (SOLMET) weather data, predicting module lifetimes in realistic environments can become a practical reality. The status of the present techniques of simulating the various transport mechanisms was reported. The Dent model (a modified Brunauer-Emmet-Teller) approach represented polyvinyl butyral (PVB) sorption data. A 100-layer material model and Fick's diffusion model gave diffusivity values exhibiting adequate agreement with those measured for PVB. Diffusivity of PVB is concentration dependent, decreasing as the water content in PVB increases. The temperature dependence of diffusion in PVB is well modeled by the Arrhenius rate equation. Equilibrium conductivity and leakage current data are well represented by Hearle's model for bulk ionic conductivity. A nodal network analysis using the Systems Improved Numerical Differencing Analyzer (SINDA) Thermal Analyzer gave reasonable correlation with measurable data. It is concluded that realistic lifetime predictions seem to be feasible.

Electromagnetic braking for Mars spacecraft

Aerobraking concepts are being studied to improve performance and cost effectiveness of propulsion systems for Mars landers and Mars interplanetary spacecraft. Access to megawatt power levels (nuclear power coupled to high-storage inductive or capacitive devices) on a manned Mars interplanetary spacecraft may make feasible electromagnetic braking and lift modulation techniques which were previously impractical. Using pulsed microwave and magnetic field technology, potential plasmadynamic braking and hydromagnetic lift modulation techniques have been identified. Entry corridor modulation to reduce loads and heating, to reduce vertical descent rates, and to expand horizontal and lateral landing ranges are possible benefits. In-depth studies are needed to identify specific design concepts for feasibility assessments. Standing wave/plasma sheath interaction techniques appear to be promising. The techniques may require some tailoring of spacecraft external structures and materials. In addition, rapid response guidance and control systems may require the use of structurally embedded sensors coupled to expert systems or to artificial intelligence systems.
