Better Living Through Biology: Studying Enzymes to Make Industrial Processes More Efficient

In biology, enzymes are the molecular machinery needed to speed up slow chemical reactions for life to occur. These molecular machines enhance chemical processes to a large degree, allowing for improbable and challenging chemical reactions to efficiently happen in water at room temperature. Many microorganisms have specialized enzymes used to tackle particularly challenging chemistry that they experience in their own environment. Our group is studying a specific enzyme using a reaction called "electron bifurcation" that energetically pairs electrons and is analogous to a trampoline, using one person's jump to propel another person higher than they could by themselves. We have learned that certain metal- and vitamin-containing pathways in this protein funnel electrons in specific directions. Our investigation into this enzyme is the foundation for future industrial applications, ranging from biological production of sustainable aviation fuel from CO2, production of nitrogen-based fertilizers, and biologically remediating environmental contamination.

High Temperature Heat Pumps and Their Roles in the Decarbonization of Building and Industry

Heat pumps have been sought as a promising technology for air and water heating processes in buildings. Several OEMs have been commercializing heat pumps with varying capacities; However, the application has been limited to lower temperatures (less than 70℃). With the recently growing interest in replacing gas-fired equipment for buildings and industrial processes, a new class of heat pumps, known as high-temperature heat pumps, is gaining substantial interest where the target temperatures are higher than the conventional heat pump technology (greater than 90℃). The current study is focused on this class of heat pumps and aims to provide a holistic overview of state-of-the-art technology while highlighting major challenges and opportunities. The discussion will be focused on the availability of technology to enable higher sink temperatures, deployment-based applications, waste heat recovery, and process integration and controls.

Accelerating Nuclear-Integrated Data Centers in the USA: SWOT Analysis, Power-Thermal Management Strategies, and Industrial-Scale Demonstration and Potential Deployment

Driven by the growth in digital services, cloud computing, AI, and manufacturing, data centers face rising energy demands that challenge traditional power sources and cooling efficiency. This study explores using nuclear power to meet these demands, focusing on accelerated reactor technology deployment and highlighting needs such as N+1/N+2 power supplies and integrated power-thermal management. A SWOT analysis addresses grid connectivity, reactors, and site selection, particularly DOE sites. Reactor technology demonstration and deployment could be accelerated by leveraging test facilities such as MARVEL, MAGNET, TED, FAS, DOME, LOTUS, ATR, Energy System Proving Grounds, and upcoming Energy Launch Pads, along with modeling and simulation tools such as RELAP5, MOOSE, VERA, RAVEN, and FORCE. The potential power and thermal management options, including various cooling technologies, waste-heat utilization, and an industrial-scale demonstration plan, aim to accelerate the integration of nuclear power and data centers in the USA, while emphasizing community and stakeholder engagement and synergistic efforts.

DuraMAT FY24 Annual Report: Five Results to Help America's Photovoltaic Industry

The Durable Module Materials Consortium's overarching goal is to understand photovoltaic (PV) module degradation and enable high-energy-yield modules with a 50-year lifespan. One of DuraMAT's milestones this year was to identify cases where the whole of DuraMAT really mattered and made an impact that was greater than the sum of the project results. We identified five key results that demonstrate progress toward enabling 50-year modules for a resilient PV industry: 1) Resilient PV Systems; 2) Proactive Materials Screening; 3) Understanding Wear-Out; 4) Identifying Which Cracks Matter; and 5) Software Tools and Data Resources This annual report summarizes these key results, as well as reviewing our other ongoing work in fiscal year 2024.

Integrating Cybersecurity Risk Assessment with Process Safety in Chemical Process Industries

This dissertation bridges the gap between industrial cybersecurity and traditional process safety by introducing an integrated Cyber-LOPA framework that combines the Purdue Enterprise Reference Architecture, Cyber Kill Chain, and CVSS v4.0 metrics. Demonstrated on a High-Density Polyethylene slurry process, the work illustrates how cyber threats targeting automation systems can bypass physical protection layers, proving the necessity of unified risk assessments to prevent cyber-induced physical incidents in chemical manufacturing plants.

Design Choices in Anomaly Detection for Industrial Control Systems: Insights from Gas Pipeline Data

Industrial control systems (ICS) remain vulnerable to increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks, yet evaluating anomaly detection models in these environments is challenging due to temporal dependencies, missing-not-at-random patterns, and extremely imbalanced datasets. These factors make common practices—especially random data splits and naïve imputation—prone to severe temporal leakage, which can inflate reported performance and obscure real-world limitations. In this work, we systematically examine classical machine learning models, temporal deep learning architecture, and tensor-decomposition–based methods on a gas-pipeline dataset using a fully temporally separated evaluation pipeline designed to mimic realistic deployment conditions. Our findings show that proper temporal handling and MNAR-aware preprocessing significantly alter the relative performance of popular anomaly-detection methods, providing practical guidance for designing reliable, leakage-resistant ICS intrusion-detection systems.

Building the Business Case with JUSTIFI: Quantifying Multiple Benefits in the Automotive Industry

The Michigan State University Industrial Training and Assessment Center (MSU ITAC) conducted a pilot study at an automotive parts manufacturer in Michigan. The study identified energy-productivity enhancements through the application of the JUSTIFI software. Key recommendations included replacing six inefficient rooftop units (RTUs) with a new air rotational unit. By quantifying operational savings for this project, the expected payback period went from 6.6 years to 1.4 years. Additionally, the installation of variable frequency drives (VFDs) on condenser tower motors was suggested. By including all operational benefits, the payback period was reduced from 8.2 years to 1.3 years. This comprehensive analysis aims to bolster the manufacturer's goals of reducing energy while enhancing overall operational efficiency.

Beta-Amino Carboxylate (BAC) non-aqueous physical solvents for enhanced CO2 separations in pre-combustion carbon capture, industrial CO 2 capture, and biogas upgrading processes

Novel beta-amino carboxylate (BAC) solvents have been synthesized and tested to efficiently capture carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from process gas streams with CO 2 partial pressure intermediate between pre-combustion and post-combustion capture. The BAC solvents have molecular structures characterized by alkyl-substituted amides or esters containing a secondary amine functional group on the second carbon from the carbonyl carbon (referred to as the beta “β” carbon). The ester or amide functional group combined with optimal steric crowding around the amine nitrogen by proximate alkyl groups are tailored to modify the strength of CO 2 binding in the solvent. The solvents possess high CO 2 solubilities and high gas selectivity including good CO 2 /H 2 O selectivity and can be utilized for CO 2 absorption over a range of partial pressures. Due to low volatility, many of the solvents can be operated at or above ambient temperature which eliminates solvent chilling and allows regeneration using low grade waste heat. These novel solvents offer an opportunity for efficient carbon capture for a range of applications including biogas upgrading, hydrogen production, and pre-combustion carbon capture.
