Effects of pointing errors on receiver performance for parabolic dish solar concentrators

The effects of dynamic (moving) pointing errors on the performance of solar thermal receivers is investigated. Only point focusing types of solar collectors are considered. The key element in the study is the analytical derivation of the intercept factor that relates pointing errors to captured energy at the receiver. A detailed example using typical parameter values is modeled on the digital computer and demonstrates the theory and the dynamic nature of the problem.

Analytic derivation and evaluation of a state-trajectory control law for dc-to-dc converters

Mathematical representations of a state-plane switching boundary employed in a state-trajectory control law for dc-to-dc converters are derived. Several levels of approximation to the switching boundary equations are presented, together with an evaluation of the effects of nonideal operating characteristics of converter power stage components on the shape and location of the boundary and the behavior of a system controlled by it. Digital computer simulations of dc-to-dc converters operating in conjunction with each of these levels of control are presented and evaluated with respect to changes in transient and steady-state performance.

Non-parametric PCM to ADM conversion

An all-digital technique to convert pulse code modulated (PCM) signals into adaptive delta modulation (ADM) format is presented. The converter developed is shown to be independent of the statistical parameters of the encoded signal and can be constructed with only standard digital hardware. The structure of the converter is simple enough to be fabricated on a large scale integrated circuit where the advantages of reliability and cost can be optimized. A concise evaluation of this PCM to ADM translation technique is presented and several converters are simulated on a digital computer. A family of performance curves is given which displays the signal-to-noise ratio for sinusoidal test signals subjected to the conversion process, as a function of input signal power for several ratios of ADM rate to Nyquist rate.

Choice of method for discretization of continuous systems

The paper discusses and compares several common methods of discretizing the transfer function of a continuous control system so that a digital computer can be used. The discretization effect on the frequency response attenuation of the simple transfer function G(s) = 1/(s + 1) is illustrated for the Tusting, Boxer-Thaler, Madwed, linear segment approximation, and stair-step with half period advanced methods. The input frequency must be significantly lower than one-half the sampling error to have negligible discretization error. Phase differences due to discretization are also plotted, and it is seen that the zero-order hold contributes much more phase shift than that due to discretization. In situations where zero-order hold must follow a computer, the method of discretization of a continuous system is not a major factor if phase shift is important.

Digital techniques for processing Landsat imagery

An overview of the basic techniques used to process Landsat images with a digital computer, and the VICAR image processing software developed at JPL and available to users through the NASA sponsored COSMIC computer program distribution center is presented. Examples of subjective processing performed to improve the information display for the human observer, such as contrast enhancement, pseudocolor display and band rationing, and of quantitative processing using mathematical models, such as classification based on multispectral signatures of different areas within a given scene and geometric transformation of imagery into standard mapping projections are given. Examples are illustrated by Landsat scenes of the Andes mountains and Altyn-Tagh fault zone in China before and after contrast enhancement and classification of land use in Portland, Oregon. The VICAR image processing software system which consists of a language translator that simplifies execution of image processing programs and provides a general purpose format so that imagery from a variety of sources can be processed by the same basic set of general applications programs is described.

Split-film anemometer measurements on an airfoil with turbulent separated flow

Experimental studies of turbulent separation on airfoils have been conducted to aid in improving theoretical models of post-stall airfoil behavior. The studies utilize a variety of pressure and hot-film probes. The split-film anemometer has proved particularly valuable for measurement of highly turbulent reversing flows. Suggested techniques for on-line digital computer processing of the data are discussed.

Alternative signal processing techniques for a pulsed laser Doppler velocimeter system

The laser Doppler velocimeter system (LDV) being tested at NASA MSFC, Alabama, relies on a bank of classical filters for processing the returned lidar signal. Due to the complexity of this conventional filter system, alternative signal processing methods have been proposed for obtaining the Doppler spectrum. The fast Fourier transform (FFT) and the pulse-pair estimator are two techniques which appear to offer some advantages over the existing system. The work reported employs digital computer simulation to compare and evaluate these two processing methods for determining the first and second moments of the LDV velocity spectrum.

Fiber optic accelerometer

Low-cost, rugged lightweight accelerometer has been developed that converts mechanical motion into digitized optical outputs and is immune to electromagnetic and electrostatic interferences. Instrument can be placed in hostile environment, such as engine under test, and output led out through miscellany of electrical fields, high temperatures, etc., by optic fiber cables to benign environment of test panel. There, digitized optical signals can be converted to electrical signals for use in standard electrical equipment or used directly in optical devices, such as optical digital computer.

Aircrew displays and avionics for application in a future national airspace system

A concept for increased pilot involvement in a future National Airspace System was evolved during the FAA New Initiatives in Engineering and Development Users responsibilities and ways in which they might interact. The technical feasibility of the system is indicated by the sophisticated level of presently manufactured digital computers and display avionics, and the application of that technology under design by the major airframe manufacturers. Data collected during simulations and flights with the Terminal Configured Vehicle Program B-737 airplane are shown to have direct application to the new system concept. The adoption of the operational changes envisioned, offers some potentially significant advantages to the user.

A program for calculating load coefficient matrices utilizing the force summation method, L218 (LOADS). Volume 1: Engineering and usage

The LOADS program L218, a digital computer program that calculates dynamic load coefficient matrices utilizing the force summation method, is described. The load equations are derived for a flight vehicle in straight and level flight and excited by gusts and/or control motions. In addition, sensor equations are calculated for use with an active control system. The load coefficient matrices are calculated for the following types of loads: translational and rotational accelerations, velocities, and displacements; panel aerodynamic forces; net panel forces; shears and moments. Program usage and a brief description of the analysis used are presented. A description of the design and structure of the program to aid those who will maintain and/or modify the program in the future is included.

Quiet Clean Short-haul Experimental Engine (QCSEE) composite fan frame design report

An advanced composite frame which is flight-weight and integrates the functions of several structures was developed for the over the wing (OTW) engine and for the under the wing (UTW) engine. The composite material system selected as the basic material for the frame is Type AS graphite fiber in a Hercules 3501 epoxy resin matrix. The frame was analyzed using a finite element digital computer program. This program was used in an iterative fashion to arrive at practical thicknesses and ply orientations to achieve a final design that met all strength and stiffness requirements for critical conditions. Using this information, the detail design of each of the individual parts of the frame was completed and released. On the basis of these designs, the required tooling was designed to fabricate the various component parts of the frame. To verify the structural integrity of the critical joint areas, a full-scale test was conducted on the frame before engine testing. The testing of the frame established critical spring constants and subjected the frame to three critical load cases. The successful static load test was followed by 153 and 58 hours respectively of successful running on the UTW and OTW engines.

On the use of coherence functions to evaluate sources of dynamic excitation

The use of coherence functions for identifying the relative contributions of multiple dynamic inputs to the measured vibration response of spacecraft components on a practical, complex structure was investigated. Data were generated by applying simultaneous vibratory and acoustic excitation to a test model (a modified Titan instrumentation truss). Up to three inputs were used. In some cases mutually coherent inputs were generated. A digital computer program was written to analyze the test data, using an approach based on iterative computational algorithms. The results showed that the coherence function technique was effective in identifying and evaluating sources of excitation, for both independent and coherent inputs. The effect of varying the number of data samples used in the necessary averaging process was briefly investigated.
