CHARACTERIZATION ON ANISOTROPIC THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY FOR BIG AREA ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING WITH POLYMERS

Additive manufacturing with polymers has been used mainly for prototyping. A recent development of Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory has opened its applications in the mold and die industry. A numerical simulation and prediction for a mold heating performance requires accurate anisotropic thermal properties of the printed material, which are challenging to obtain, and often requires the use of multiple techniques. The transient plane source (TPS) technique has been widely used due to its ability to measure the thermal properties of an extensive range of materials (solids, liquids, powder). Despite the capability to characterize thermal conductivity k of isotropic and anisotropic materials, the measurements of latter materials are limited to the cases, where the samples have the same thermal conductivity k along x- and y-axis that form the radial plane. In this work, the method for a characterization of k in all three dimensions is developed, and the application of TPS is extended to the determination of thermal properties along the x-, y-, and z-axis individually. The materials are represented by additively manufactured polymers including polylactic acid (PLA) and styrene maleic anhydride (SMA). The developed method consists of (1) a determination of the heat capacity of the polymers by means of TPS in combination with the developed in this work data analysis procedure, (2) a machining three types of cylindrical samples from the same material, with the height corresponding either to x-, y-, or z-direction of printing, and (3) a determination of axial thermal conductivity employing anisotropic model and using previously determined heat capacity

Electrically Conductive and Protective Coating Compatibility with LSCF Cathodes

Ferritic stainless-steel interconnect materials are used in intermediate or high-temperature SOFCs because of their oxidation resistance, high formability, and low cost. Their corrosion resistance is due to the formation of a protective chromium oxide scale during operation. However, the protective oxide layer produces Cr-containing volatile species at SOFC operating temperatures and conditions, which can cause cathode poisoning. Spinel coatings have been developed to prevent cathode poisoning while maintaining an electrically conductive pathway through SOFC stacks. Generally, Mn-Co-O spinel has been the material of choice, but PNNL has developed an Mn-Cu-O spinel protective coating to remove the costly Co and enhance the electrical conductivity. This paper will focus on the electrically conductive coating’s compatibility with LSCF in high-temperature operating environments.

Variable gap thermal conductivity apparatus and method

An apparatus and a method for determining the thermal conductivity of a fluid specimen are provided. The apparatus and the method include determining thermal conductivity using a quasi-steady state variable gap axial flow technique. The fluid specimen is heated on one side by a heat source with a known power output and cooled on the other side. After reaching steady state, a resulting temperature drop through the fluid specimen exists. This temperature drop, the known fluid specimen thickness (or gap distance), and the known power output are used to calculate the thermal resistance of the fluid specimen. The thermal conductivity of the fluid specimen is then determined using a curve fit of thermal resistance with respect to gap distance.

High resolution, high conductivity components by aerosol jet printing

Highly conductive electrical traces formed over mechanical steps or on non-planar surfaces with linewidths of 10 to 100 μm and a method for forming such electrical traces are disclosed. The method employs two steps, with the first step using an aerosol jet printing (AJP) process to form thin electrical traces that serve as the seed layers for the second step. The first step preferably employs multiple passes with the AJP to create multiple seed sub-layers with improved continuity and conductivity. In the second step, the seed layers are subjected to an electrodeposition process that forms the bulk of the thickness of the electrical traces. The electrodeposition process may include one, two, or three phases at corresponding low or high biases, with low biases providing denser, more highly conductive plating sub-layers, while high biases provide plating sub-layers having better gap bridging properties.

Assessing the Impact of Effective Thermal Conductivity on Gas-cooled Reactor Transients in RELAP5-3D

In block-type high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs), coolant holes in blocks lead to a reduction in heat transfer through conduction. In systems codes like RELAP5-3D, we must account for this degradation by using an effective thermal conductivity (ETC). This presentation discusses a few ETC relationships and demonstrates the impact of ETC for the modular High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor 350 MW -- a computational benchmark for HTGR modeling -- and for the High Temperature Test Facility (HTTF) -- an HTGR thermal hydraulics test facility. We demonstrate that the use of ETC leads to temperatures that are higher than the bulk thermal conductivity of the block material would yield, but these differences have no meaningful impact on the transient performance of the reactors. The ETC also reduces the cooldown rate, leading to more time at elevated temperatures. Overall, while accounting for ETC is important in capturing the physics of the reactor, it is not expected to have a meaningful impact on transient performance.

Conduction-Cooled Operation of an SRF Multi-Cell Cavity

The development of compact, SRF-based accelerators for applications beyond research is experiencing notable advancements due to the use of cryocoolers for conduction-cooling instead of traditional liquid cryogens. Following the successful demonstration of a single-cell cavity operated through conduction cooling with three two-stage cryocoolers, Jefferson Lab (JLab) has made strides in the operation of a multi-cell resonator. This milestone paves the way for high-energy applications of compact, conduction-cooled SRF machines. The demonstration, carried out in collaboration with General Atomics, will take place in a dedicated horizontal test cryostat (HTC) at their San Diego facility. This presentation will highlight the technological developments, the latest results, and valuable lessons learned.

Performance and durability of electrically conductive tape for shingled Si heterojunction technology cells

We report electrically conductive tape (ECT) was characterized and used to assemble shingled cell strings at low temperature to achieve high reliability Pb- and Ag-free interconnections. The volume resistivity for two considered ECTs are 0.13 ± 0.06 mΩ·cm and 0.47 ± 0.20 mΩ·cm and specific contact resistances, 6.85± 2.00 mΩ·cm 2 and 6.30 ± 0.37 mΩ·cm 2 using the emerging IEC 62788-8-1 Technical Specification for assessment of electrically conductive adhesives (ECA). Durability and performance of the technology in glass–glass mini modules were evaluated with temperature cycling, damp heat testing, and combined-accelerated stress testing (CAST). Through temperature cycling (-40°C to 85°C) applying five times the mini module short-circuit current in forward bias and in the multi climate CAST protocol, there was negligible degradation of fill factor after replacing connectors at the modules' cable leads; however, CAST resulted in short circuit current loss attributed to degradation in light collection by the cells, not the ECT. The IEC 61215-2 85°C, 85% relative humidity damp heat testing showed susceptibility of the HJT cells to effects of humidity in the electroluminescence intensity around the module perimeter that degraded power performance by 4% (relative). Contrasting the IEC 61215-2 qualification testing-based damp heat testing with CAST, factors such as the optical stress of CAST may precipitate the degradation of the modules whereas the humidity levels and duration of IEC 61215-2 damp heat testing may lead to excessive levels of humidity diffused into the modules, potentially resulting in degradation that is unrepresentative of the field.

Site-Projected Thermal Conductivity: Application to Defects, Interfaces, and Homogeneously Disordered Materials

With the rapid advance of high-performance computing and electronic technologies, understanding thermal conductivity in materials has become increasingly important. This study presents a novel method: the site-projected thermal conductivity that quantitatively estimates the local (atomic) contribution to heat transport, leveraging the Green–Kubo thermal transport equations. The effectiveness of this approach on disordered and amorphous graphene, amorphous silicon, and grain boundaries in silicon–germanium alloys is demonstrated. Amorphous graphene reveals a percolation behavior for thermal transport. The results highlight the potential of the method to provide new insights into the thermal behavior of materials, offering a promising avenue for materials design and performance optimization.

Ultralow Thermal Conductivity and Thermoelectric Properties of Rb 2 Bi 8 Se 13

Complex bismuth chalcogenides are narrow band gap semiconductors with intrinsic low thermal conductivity, which exhibit high potential as highly efficient thermoelectric materials. Here, we assess the basic thermoelectric properties of polycrystalline Rb 2 Bi 8 Se 13 in the temperature range 300-823 K as well as performance-optimizing strategies. We find that the as-made bulk samples are single phase with the monoclinic crystal structure (P2 1 /m) and crystallize in layer morphology. The pristine sample exhibits an exceedingly low lattice thermal conductivity of 0.6- 0.46 W·m -1 ·K -1 at 300-823 K, which derives from strong lattice anharmonicity, large Grüneisen parameters, and low phonon velocities induced by the complex crystal structure with heavy atom Bi and a large unit cell. Here, the Cl doping successfully enhances the carrier concentration in Rb 2 Bi 8 Se 13 with a negligible impact on the electronic band structure, displaying common doping behaviors. Se vacancy, on the contrary, leads to n-type doping and enhances the effective mass and power factors more significantly. Consequently, a maximum ZT of ~0.75 at 823 K for the 0.3% Se-vacancy-doped sample is obtained.

Ion-Conducting Dynamic Solid Polymer Electrolyte Adhesives

Cross-linked polymer electrolytes containing structurally dynamic disulfide bonds have been synthesized to investigate their combined ion transport and adhesive properties. Dynamic network polymers of varying cross-link densities are synthesized via thiol oxidation of a bisthiol monomer, 2,2'-(ethylenedioxy)diethanethiol, and tetrathiol cross-linker, pentaerythritol tetrakis(3-mercaptopropionate). At optimal loading of lithium bis(trifluoromethane-sulfonyl-imide) (LiTFSI) salt, the ionic conductivities (σ) at 90 °C are about 1 × 10–4 and 1 × 10–5 S/cm at the lowest and highest cross-linking, respectively. Notably, in comparison to the equivalent nondynamic network, the dynamic network shows a positive deviation in σ above 90 °C, which suggests the enhancement of ion transport occurs from the difference in structural relaxation on account of the dissociation of disulfide bonds. Lap shear adhesion and conductivity tests on ITO-coated glass substrates reveal the dynamic network exhibits a higher adhesive shear strength of 0.2 MPa (vs 0.03 MPa for the nondynamic network) and higher σ after the application of external stimulus (UV light or heat). The adhesive strength and σ are stable over multiple debonding/rebonding cycles and, thus, demonstrating the utility of these structurally dynamic networks as solid polymer electrolyte adhesives.

Effects of Synthesis Conditions on the Structure and Conductivity of Hydrogen-Substituted Graphdiyne

This study investigates how synthesis conditions influence the structure and conductivity of hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne (HsGDY). By varying the reaction temperature and solvent, we find that small changes in conditions markedly affect triple-bond retention and electronic continuity. Solid-state 13 C NMR and Raman spectroscopy reveal that elevated temperatures drive alkyne loss and partial graphitization, with N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) promoting faster degradation than pyridine. The resulting decline in alkyne content directly correlates with reduced conductivity, indicating that preserving conjugation is essential for charge transport. These findings clarify how the synthetic environment governs the structural and electronic evolution of graphdiyne frameworks, providing insight into the controlled preparation of conjugated carbon networks.

Ultrafast bipolar conductivity driven by intense single-cycle terahertz pulses in a topological insulator Bi 2 Se 3

We present the measurement of ultrafast terahertz (THz) conductivity of a 50 nm thick topological insulator Bi 2 Se 3 at low temperature 5 K by using a THz pump and THz probe spectroscopy scheme. Here, the THz conductivity driven by a single-cycle intense THz pump exhibits a bipolar lineshape and frequency-dependent relaxation dynamics due to the separated surface and bulk charge carriers with distinctly different scattering rates and relaxation times. We also demonstrate THz pump field-dependent excitation of the surface and bulk spectral weights, which suggests one of the optimal THz excitation conditions for generating the most charge carriers from the topology-protected surface state relative to the bulk. This also allows THz control of surface and bulk transport channels in a selective way.

Construction of a Code Verification Matrix for Heat Conduction With Finite Element Code Applications

When establishing the pedigree of a simulation tool, code verification is used to ensure that the implemented numerical algorithm is a faithful representation of its underlying mathematical model. During this process, numerical results on various meshes are systematically compared to a reference analytic solution. The selection of analytic solutions can be a laborious process, as it is difficult to establish adequate code confidence without performing redundant work. In this report we address this issue by applying a physics-based process that establishes a set of reference problems. In this process, code simulation options are categorized and systematically tested, which ensures that gaps in testing are easily identified and addressed. The resulting problems are primarily intended for code verification analysis but may also be useful for comparison to other simulation codes, troubleshooting activities, or training exercises. The process is used to select fifteen code verification problems relevant for the one-dimensional steady-state heat conduction equation. These problems are applicable to a wide variety of simulation tools, but, in this work, a demonstration is performed using the finite element-based nuclear fuel performance code BISON. Convergence to the analytic solution at the theoretical rate is quantified for a selection of the problems, which establishes a baseline pedigree for the code. Not only can this standard set of conduction solutions be used for verification of other codes, but also the physics-based process for selecting problems can be utilized to quantify and expand testing for any simulation tool.
