Multi-year slant path rain fade statistics at 28.56 and 19.04 GHz for Wallops Island, Virginia

Multiyear rain fade statistics at 28.56 GHz and 19.04 GHz were compiled for the region of Wallops Island, Virginia covering the time periods, 1 April 1977 through 31 March 1978, and 1 September 1978 through 31 August 1979. The 28.56 GHz attenuations were derived by monitoring the beacon signals from the COMSTAR geosynchronous satellite, D sub 2 during the first year, and satellite, D sub 3, during the second year. Although 19.04 GHz beacons exist aboard these satellites, statistics at this frequency were predicted using the 28 GHz fade data, the measured rain rate distribution, and effective path length concepts. The prediction method used was tested against radar derived fade distributions and excellent comparisons were noted. For example, the rms deviations between the predicted and test distributions were less than or equal to 0.2dB or 4% at 19.04 GHz. The average ratio between the 28.56 GHz and 19.04 GHz fades were also derived for equal percentages of time resulting in a factor of 2.1 with a .05 standard deviation.

The DSN programming system

The Deep Space Network programming system is described by a heuristic model. Interaction with two elements of that system, anomaly reporting and the MBASIC (trademark) language, is described in detail. Feedback from anomaly reporting indicates that the methodology resulted in a low anomaly rate and thereby also provided positive feedback. The need to reduce operating costs prompted the implementation of the MBASIC (trademark) language as a compiler.

Carbon/graphite fiber risk analysis and assessment study: An assessment of the risk to Douglas commercial transport aircraft

The potential hazard to electrical and electronic devices should there be a release of free carbon fibers due to an aircraft crash and fire was assessed. Exposure and equipment sensitivity data were compiled for a risk analysis. Results are presented in the following areas: DC-9/DC-10 electrical/electronic component characterization; DC-9 and DC-10 fiber transfer functions; potential for transport aircraft equipment exposure to carbon fibers; and equipment vulnerability assessment. Results reflect only a negligible increase in risk for the DC-9 and DC-10 fleets either now or projected to 1993.

SUMC fault tolerant computer system

The results of the trade studies are presented. These trades cover: establishing the basic configuration, establishing the CPU/memory configuration, establishing an approach to crosstrapping interfaces, defining the requirements of the redundancy management unit (RMU), establishing a spare plane switching strategy for the fault-tolerant memory (FTM), and identifying the most cost effective way of extending the memory addressing capability beyond the 64 K-bytes (K=1024) of SUMC-II B. The results of the design are compiled in Contract End Item (CEI) Specification for the NASA Standard Spacecraft Computer II (NSSC-II), IBM 7934507. The implementation of the FTM and memory address expansion.

A history of Mars atmospheric opacity in the southern hemisphere during the Viking extended mission

A history of developing opacity in the Mars southern hemisphere during the Viking extended mission has been compiled using orbiter images obtained at high altitude. Observations of changing contrasts under similar viewing conditions have been modeled by multiple-scattering intensity transfer equations that have produced a temporal description of changes in optical depth and particle-scattering properties within a network of control points. The results are presented in the form of Mercator and perspective plots for various dates.

Spectral evidence for a carbonaceous chondrite surface composition on Deimos

The surface compositions of Phobos and Deimos as determined by their UV-visible reflectance are compared in order to evaluate the hypothesis that the different surface morphologies of the two satellites are due to different mechanical properties. The UV-visible reflectance spectrum of Deimos is compiled from Mariner 9 UV spectrometry and Canopus star tracker photometry and ground-based colorimetry and polarimetry; the geometric albedo of Deimos is determined from Mariner 9 Canopus star tracker data. The reflectance spectra of Deimos and Phobos are found to be similar in a first approximation, exhibiting low, flat reflectivities in the visible and dropping off sharply in the UV, compatible with a probable carbonaceous chondrite nature for Deimos as well as Phobos and suggesting that their different surface morphologies are most likely due to different orbital histories.

Solar limb emission lines near Ca II H & K and their spatial intensity variations

The paper employs solar observations of high spatial and spectral resolution to identify emission lines seen in the extended wings of Ca II H & K near the solar limb. Emission lines in the wings of H & K represent valuable diagnostics of the atmospheres of cool stars, with a varying information content which depends on their particular formation mechanism. In solar spectrograms different emission line formation mechanisms can be distinguished by the character of the spatial intensity variation (SIV) apparent in the lines. Various classes of H & K emission features, their spatial intensity variations and their formation mechanisms (of which some pose further problems) are discussed. A new extended list of line identifications is compiled based on their formation class and compared with other line lists. Evidence is found that stellar luminosity-sensitive lines tend to show large spatial intensity variation on the sun.

Cataloged infrared sources in NIPSS data. I - The RSO 1 catalog

A small number of selected near-infrared and visual photographic pairs from the Steward Observatory Near Infrared Photographic Sky Survey have been examined for content of stars more red than (V-I) of about 2.5 magnitudes. A simple manual extraction of these objects was carried out as a part of a preliminary evaluation of survey data and techniques for reducing it; the resulting list has been compiled as the first installment of a Catalog of Red Stellar Objects (Craine et al. 1979). Results of a cross correlation of this catalog with the IRC, AFGL, and EIC infrared catalogs are here presented. The results indicate that these photographs may be particularly useful for purposes of optical identification of short-wavelength infrared sources to limits much fainter than represented by presently existing infrared catalogs.

Irrigation mapping in western Kansas using Landsat. I - Key parameters

The procedure used in the identification and mapping of irrigated lands in six counties of western Kansas is presented and key considerations for the identification of irrigated lands during the project are discussed. The procedure involved the compilation of a field-by-field map of irrigated lands on the basis of multi-date Landsat band 5 imagery, the entry of map data into a computer, and the retrieval of the data in the form of maps, tables and statistics. Comparison of the positional results of the image interpretation with statistical data for a single county was used to verify the mapping procedure, as accuracies of from 80-100% were obtained, depending on the type of crop. Considerations relevant to the identification of irrigated land on the basis of remote sensing data include the form of the final data, irrigation practices in the area, the soil moisture budget, the number and kinds of crops, the crop calendar, and the availability of usable imagery.

Quantitative laboratory spectra and spectral line parameters for the nu2 and nu4 bands of PH3 applicable to spectral radiative models of the atmosphere of Jupiter

Quantitative laboratory PH3 absorption spectra were obtained in the 800-1350/cm region, at approximately 0.05/cm resolution, with gas amounts corresponding to observed PH3 absorptions in the atmosphere of Jupiter. A compilation of spectral line positions, intensities and ground state energies has been generated for the nu2 and nu4 bands of PH3. Line-by-line calculations have been compared with the experimental spectra.

Modeling a maintenance simulation of the geosynchronous platform

A modeling technique used to conduct a simulation study comparing various maintenance routines for a space platform is dicussed. A system model is described and illustrated, the basic concepts of a simulation pass are detailed, and sections on failures and maintenance are included. The operation of the system across time is best modeled by a discrete event approach with two basic events - failure and maintenance of the system. Each overall simulation run consists of introducing a particular model of the physical system, together with a maintenance policy, demand function, and mission lifetime. The system is then run through many passes, each pass corresponding to one mission and the model is re-initialized before each pass. Statistics are compiled at the end of each pass and after the last pass a report is printed. Items of interest typically include the time to first maintenance, total number of maintenance trips for each pass, average capability of the system, etc.

HCMM/soil moisture experiment

Progress in the compilation and analysis of airborne and ground data to determine the relationship between the maximum surface minus maximum air temperature differential (delta Tsa) and available water (PAW) is reported. Also, results of an analysis of HCMM images to determine the effect of cloud cover on the availability of HCMM-type data are presented. An inverse relationship between delta Tsa and PAW is indicated along with stable delta Tsa vs. PAW distributions for fully developed canopies. Large variations, both geographical and diurnal, in the cloud cover images are reported. The average monthly daytime cloud cover fluctuated between 40 and 60 percent.
