Decay of the zincate concentration gradient at an alkaline zinc cathode after charging

The study was carried out by observing the decay of the zincate concentration gradient at a horizontal zinc cathode after charging. This decay was found to approximate first order kinetics as expected from a proposed boundary layer model. The decay half life was shown to be a linear function of the thickness of porous zinc deposit on the cathode indicating a very rapid transport of zincate through porous zinc metal. The rapid transport is attributed to an electrochemical mechanism. The data also indicated a relatively sharp transition between the diffusion and convection transport regions. The diffusion of zincate ion through asbestos submerged in alkaline electrolyte was shown to be comparable with that predicted from the bulk diffusion coefficient of the zincate ion in alkali.

Moderate temperature sodium cells. I - Transition metal disulfide cathodes

TiS2, VS2, and Nb(1.1)S2 transition metal disulfides were evaluated as cathode materials for a moderate temperature rechargeable Na cell operating at 130 C. The 1st discharge of TiS2 results in a capacity of 0.85 eq/mole; approximately half of the Na in the 1st phase spanning the Na range from zero to 0.30 and almost all the Na in the 2nd phase spanning the 0.37 to 0.80 range are rechargeable. VS2 intercalates up to one mole of Na/mole of VS2 in the 1st discharge; the resulting Na(x)VS2 ternary consists of 3 phases in the 3 ranges of Na from zero to 1. Niobium disulfide undergoes a phase change in the 1st discharge; the average rechargeable capacity in extended cycling of this cathode is 0.50 eq/mole.

The molten carbonate carbon dioxide concentrator - Cathode performance at high CO2 utilization

An experimental study of the cathode performance of the molten carbonate carbon dioxide concentrator (MCCDC) at typical gas concentrations is reported, and the behavior is described in terms of standard electrochemical kinetic analysis. Theoretical aspects of the MCCDC are discussed, including the current-generating processes, the overpotential, and the reaction kinetics. A final working equation is derived, and the electrochemical cell is described. The parameters determined by the experiments include cathode overpotentials and removal and current efficiency as a function of current density, as well as carbon dioxide removal rate as a function of flow rate. The results are compared with data for other cells; the agreement with data for the molten carbonate fuel cell suggests that the major difference between the two cells is in the wetting characteristics. The MCCDC achieves high removal efficiencies at high current efficiencies. The lowest current efficiency recorded was 80 percent, and at most current densities, current efficiencies were above 100 percent.

Gas pressure and electron density at the level of the active zone of hollow cathode arc discharges

A model for the longitudinal variations of the partial pressures of electrons, ions, and neutral particles is proposed as a result of an experimental study of pressure variations at the level of the active zone as a function of the various discharge parameters of a hollow cathode arc. The cathode region where the temperature passes through its maximum is called active zone. The proposed model embodies the very important variations which the partial electron and neutral particles pressures undergo at the level of the active zone.

Hollow cathode plasma source for active spacecraft charge control

A prototype plasma source spacecraft discharge device has been developed to control overall and differential spacecraft surface charging. The plasma source is based on a unique hollow cathode discharge, where the plasma generation process is contained completely within the cathode. This device can be operated on argon, krypton, or xenon and has a rapid cold start time of less than 4 s. The discharge system design includes a spacecraft-discharge/net-charge sensing circuit which provides the ability to measure the polarity, magnitude, pulse shape, and time duration of a discharging event. Ion currents of up to 325 microA and electron currents ranging from 0.02 to 6.0 A have been extracted from the device. In addition, the spacecraft discharge device successfully discharged capacitively biased plates, from as high as + or - 2500 V, to ground potential, and discharged and clamped actively biased plates at +5 V with respect to ground potential during ground simulation testing.

Hollow cathode plasma coupling study, 1986

The electron collection and emission characteristics of a simple hollow cathode contactor, an extended anode hollow cathode contactor supplied by JSC, and a ring cusp magnetic field contactor are presented and the effects of discharge power and argon or xenon expellant flowrate on these characteristics are examined. All of the contactors are shown to exhibit good electron emission performance over a wide range of discharge power and expellant type and flowrate. Good electron performance is shown to be more difficult to achieve. Results suggest that the extended anode and ring cusp contactors should perform satisfactorily to electron emission currents beyond 1000 mA and electron collection currents beyond 500 mA. All contactors performed better on xenon than argon. A general theory of plasma contactor operation in both the electron collection and electron emission modes, which describes the current-limiting effects of space-charge phenomena is given. This current-limiting and collecting phenomenon is shown to be a function of driving potential differences and emitting and collecting surface radius ratio for the case of a spherical geometry. Discharge power did not appear to influence the electron collection current substantially in the experiments so it is suggested in light of the model that the contactors are generally not limited by their ion production capabilities under conditions at which they were tested.

Process For Patterning Dispenser-Cathode Surfaces

Several microfabrication techniques combined into process cutting slots 100 micrometer long and 1 to 5 micrometer wide into tungsten dispenser cathodes for traveling-wave tubes. Patterned photoresist serves as mask for etching underlying aluminum. Chemically-assisted ion-beam etching with chlorine removes exposed parts of aluminum layer. Etching with fluorine or chlorine trifluoride removes tungsten not masked by aluminum layer. Slots enable more-uniform low-work function coating dispensed to electron-emitting surface. Emission of electrons therefore becomes more uniform over cathode surface.

Hollow-Cathode Source Generates Plasma

Device generates argon, krypton, or xenon plasma via thermionic emission and electrical discharge within hollow cathode and ejects plasma into surrounding vacuum. Goes from cold start up to full operation in less than 5 s after initial application of power. Exposed to moist air between operations without significant degradation of starting and running characteristics. Plasma generated by electrical discharge in cathode barrel sustained and aided by thermionic emission from emitter tube. Emitter tube does not depend on rare-earth oxides, making it vulnerable to contamination by exposure to atmosphere. Device modified for use as source of plasma in laboratory experiments or industrial processes.

Cathode phenomena in a low power, steady state MPD thruster

Mass loss and surface temperature measurements, filter photography and SEM surface characterization are used to study cathode phenomena in a steady state self-field MPD thruster operated at power levels between 15 and 30 kW. The equilibrium cathode temperature is found to be approximately 3200 K over most of its length, for which evaporation and thermionic emission adequately explain measured erosion rates and current levels. The start-up phase is characterized by spot current attachment with associated high erosion rates.

Electronic structure of BaO/W cathode surfaces

The local electronic structure of the emissive layer of barium dispenser thermionic cathodes is investigated theoretically using the relativistic scattered-wave approach. The interaction of Ba and O with W, Os, and W-Os alloy surfaces is studied with atomic clusters modeling different absorption environments representative of B- and M-type cathodes. Ba is found to be strongly oxidized, while O and the metal substrate are in a reduced chemical state. The presence of O enhances the surface dipole and Ba binding energy relative to Ba on W. Model results for W-Os alloy substrates show only relatively small changes in Ba and O for identical geometries, but very large charge redistributions inside the substrate, which are attributed to the electronegativity difference between Os and W. If Os is present in the surface layer, the charge transfer from Ba to the substrate and the Ba binding energy increase relative to W. Explanations are offered for the improved electron emission from alloy surfaces and the different emission enhancement for different alloy substrates.

Ground-based tests of hollow cathode plasma contactors

Experimental results are presented which describe operation of and the plasma environment associated with a hollow cathode-based plasma contactor collecting electrons from an ambient, low density Maxwellian plasma when the boundary between the contactor and the ambient plasma is nearly hemispherical. Basic physical features of the process of electron collection identified on the basis of these results include a double-sheath across which a substantial potential difference can develop and substantial ionization of neutral gas coming from the cathode by the electrons being collected. Experimental results obtained when the diameter of the anode is too small to yield a hemispherical double-sheath are shown to induce distortion of this sheath but it is argued that the same basic phenomena are still active in this case. Data obtained in these experiments should serve to validate numerical models of this process that are being developed to predict plasma contactor performance in space. Preliminary performance and plasma property results measured on a contactor emitting electrons are examined and some physical elements of this process are identified.

Fundamental principles of hollow-cathode-discharge operations in space and the design of a rocket-borne demonstration

The issue of hollow-cathode operations in space is treated from the point of view of fundamental principles of plasma interactions and their control over currents involving the device, the spaceborne vehicle, and the ambient space plasma. Particular attention is given to collective plasma processes, the effects of the ambient magnetic field, and the high probability of plasma turbulence triggered by hallow cathode operations. The paper presents a rocket payload and experiment scenario designed for accommodation on a Black Brant booster, launched from a midlatitude site to an apogee in excess of 400 km.
