Algorithms for onboard orbit estimation with Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System data

An investigation is carried out to determine an appropriate estimation technique for onboard orbit determination using simulated Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) data. Results are presented from studies done using three estimation techniques: an extended Kalman filter, a consider filter, and a sliding batch differential corrector. These estimators are evaluated when used with both baseline and worst-case TDRSS measurement errors and with tracking configurations for two types of orbits: a high-inclination, near-circular orbit with an altitude of 700 km and a moderately inclined, lower altitude orbit. Each estimation result is evaluated by comparing the true with the estimated ephemeris.

Rapid Turnaround of Costing/Designing of Space Missions Operations

The Ground Segment Team (GST), at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, provides high-level mission operations concepts and cost estimates for projects that are in the formulation phase. GST has developed a tool to track costs, assumptions, and mission requirements, and to rapidly turnaround estimates for mission operations, ground data systems, and tracking for deep space and near Earth missions. Estimates that would often take several weeks to generate are now generated in minutes through the use of an integrated suite of cost models. The models were developed through interviews with domain experts in areas of Mission Operations, including but not limited to: systems engineering, payload operations, tracking resources, mission planning, navigation, telemetry and command, and ground network infrastructure. Data collected during interviews were converted into parametric cost models and integrated into one tool suite. The tool has been used on a wide range of missions from small Earth orbiters, to flagship missions like Cassini. The tool is an aid to project managers and mission planners as they consider different scenarios during the proposal and early development stages of their missions. The tool is also used for gathering cost related requirements and assumptions and for conducting integrated analysis of multiple missions.

yProv4ML: Effortless provenance tracking for machine learning systems

The rapid growth in interest in deep learning and foundation models (FMs) in particular, has attracted the attention of a diverse range of researchers thanks to their generalization ability. However, the advent of these techniques has also brought to light the lack of transparency and rigor in the way development is pursued. In particular, the inability to determine the number of epochs and other hyperparameters in advance presents challenges in identifying the best model. To address this challenge, machine learning frameworks such as MLFlow can automate the collection of this type of information. However, these tools capture data using proprietary formats and pose little attention to lineage. This paper proposes yProv4ML, a framework that captures provenance information generated during machine learning processes in PROV-JSON format, with minimal code modification.

Power Profile Monitoring and Tracking Evolution of System-Wide HPC Workloads

The power & energy demands of HPC machines have grown significantly. Modern exascale HPC systems require tens of megawatts of combined power for computing resources and cooling facilities at full capacity. The current energy trend is not sustainable for future HPC systems, and there is a need to work toward the energy efficiency aspect of HPC performance. Energy awareness of the HPC applications at the job level is essential for running an efficient HPC system. This work aims to develop a pipeline to provide a production-level system-wide overview of the HPC workloads' power profile while handling evolving workloads exhibiting new power trends. We developed an open-set classification model for HPC jobs based on the properties of power profiles to continuously provide a system-wide holistic view of recently completed jobs. The pipeline helps continuously monitor the job-level power usage pattern of HPC and enables us to capture the new trends in applications' power behavior. We employed a comprehensive set of techniques to generate job-level data, custom-designed feature extraction methods to extract critical features from jobs' power profiles, clustering techniques powered by generative modeling, and open-set classification for identifying job profiles into known classes or an unknown set. With extensive evaluations, we demonstrate the effectiveness of each component in our pipeline. We provide an analysis of the resulting clusters that characterize the power profile landscape of the Summit supercomputer from more than 60K jobs executed in a year. The open-set classification classifies the known data sets into known classes with high accuracy and identifies unknown data noints with over 85% accuracy.

Tracking Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) VHF propagation study

A study performed to investigate the use of the Bent Ionospheric Model in computing corrections to the range and range rate measurements of the TDRSS satellites is documented. Several orbital configurations between the two satellites are discussed as to their effects on total electron content along the radio path between the satellites. Problem areas in the accurate computation of total electron content and range rate corrections are also discussed. The Bent Ionospheric Model gives the electron density versus height profile as a function of latitude, longitude, height, time, season, and solar flux.

Gravitational parameters of the Jupiter system from the Doppler tracking of Pioneer 10

Preliminary analyses of Doppler data from Pioneer 10 during its encounter with Jupiter indicate that the mass of Io is about 20% greater than previously thought and that Io's mean density is about 3.5 grams per cubic centimeter. A determination of the dynamical flattening of Jupiter (a - b)/a (where a is the semimajor axis and b is the semiminor axis) is found to lie in the neighborhood of 0.065, which agrees with the value determined from satellite perturbations.

Evaluation program for secondary spacecraft cells: Initial evaluation tests of General Electric Company 40.0 ampere-hour nickel-cadmium spacecraft cells for the tracking data relay satellite system

Five cells provided by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center were evaluated at room temperature and pressure (25 C plus or minus 2 C) with discharges at the 2 hour rate. Measurements of the cell containers following test, indicated an average increase of .006 inches at the plate thickness. Average end of charge voltages and pressures, and capacity output in ampere hours were determined. Three cells exceeded the voltage requirements of 1.52 volts during both c/10 charges at 20 C. All cells exceeded the voltage requirement of 1.52 volts during the 0 C overcharge test, although their end charges were below 1.50 volts. The pressure requirement of 65 psia was exceeded by both pressure transducer cells during c/10 charges at 25 C and 20 C and also during the 0 C overcharge test. The cells with pressure transducers reached a pressure of 20 psia before reaching the voltage limit of 1.550 volts during the pressure versus capacity test, and exhibited a pressure decay of 2 psia during the last 30 minutes of the 1 hour open circuit stand. Average capacity was 51.3 ampere hours.

Evaluation program for secondary spacecraft cells: Initial evaluation tests of General Electric Company 40.0 ampere hour nickel cadmium spacecraft cells for the tracking data relay satellite system

Average end of charge voltages and pressures, and capacity output in ampere hours are presented. Test limits specify those values at which a cell is to be terminated from charge or discharge. Requirements are based on past cell performance data. The requirement does not constitute a limit for discontinuance from testing. The nickel cadmium batteries were screened for internal shorts, low capacity, electrolyte leakage, or inability of any cell to recover its open circuit voltage above 1.150 volts during the internal short test.
