Comparison of exact and approximate formulas for the Mott correction to energy loss of relativistic heavy ions

A comparison is conducted between an exact numerical calculation and two approximate analytic expressions for the Mott correction to energy loss of heavy ions. A complete tabulation of the Mott correction is presented together with a comparison of some of the approximate expressions for the Mott correction due to Ahlen (1978) and Morgan and Eby (1973). Comparison is made with results of an experimental calibration of the HEAO-3 Heavy Cosmic Ray experimental chambers at the Bevalac.

The Draco cloud as a matrix of potential protostars

The Draco molecular cloud is inbound at a z distance of a few hundred parsecs, according to previous observations. IRAS Point Source Catalog data for a 36 sq deg area that includes most of the cloud and a comparison area around it are tabulated, illustrated, and discussed. The sources are classified as 56 unidentified, 38 identified extragalactic objects, and 44 identified stars. The unidentified and unresolved 100 micron sources appear to be globule-like clumps that are candidates for producing protostars, although the data cannot demonstrate currently accreting protostars in the globules. An undetermined percent of 100 micron sources may be artifactual, but only a small percent of them may be galaxies because of the adherence to the Draco cloud. Sources detected also at 60 micron or only at 60 micron do not adhere to the cloud and are probably galaxies. Unless artifactual the unidentified and unresolved 100 micron sources may provide considerable new information about the cloud components and therefore about potential star formation in a new class of sites and origins. Six unidentified sources have 12-25 micron stellar spectral distributions, but neither they nor the identified stars have 12-25 micron spectra characteristic of T Tauri stars.

Transport properties of ions

The strong long-range interactions between (among) charged species require the inclusion of higher order contributions to the transport properties (viscosity, thermal conductivity, diffusion) of ionized gases than are required for neutral gases. These higher order contributions have been rewritten so that they are given in terms of universal functions which can be tabulated. Tables which provide for the rapid calculation of some higher order contributions to the transport properties of both ions and electrons are given. Some results which are useful for calculating the higher order contributions to the transport properties of mixtures of ions are also given. These results are applied to the ionic species in air at high temperatures.

Circumstances for Pluto-Charon mutual events in 1987

Circumstances are tabulated for 88 Pluto-Charon mutual events occurring during the 1987 opposition. Charon is predicted to be completely obscured either by Pluto or Pluto's shadow during each passage behind Pluto during this opposition, providing several opportunities to study Pluto uncontaminated by the light of Charon. The duration of these total events is predicted to be from 32 to 79 min. The mutual-event season is now expected to conclude during the 1990 opposition. Two new stars have been selected as comparison stars for events occurring prior to opposition in 1987. Standardization of the primary comparison stars used in 1985 and 1986 has yielded the following magnitudes: B = 12.6044 + or - 0.0015 and V = 11.7956 + or - 0.0017 (1985 Primary); B = 13.1238 + or 0.0008 and V = 12.3885 + or - 0.0014 (1986 Primary).

GRO attitude control and determination

Design features of the attitude control and determination (ACAD) system for the Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) that will eventually be launched on the Shuttle are described. A tabulation of the ACAD system components is provided and the various standby and normal pointing operational modes of the system are summarized. The system software and sensors will maintain a quaternion model of the GRO attitude on the bases of kinematic equations and inertial data. The software is standardized and has previously been used on the Solar Maximum Mission and Landsat-D. Details of the processing components, redundant electronics for sensor processing, data handling and actuator control are outlined and illustrated with block diagrams. Tests applied to validate the ACAD design are outlined, as are ground support which will be implemented once the GRO is launched.

The Galileo attitude and articulation control system - A radiation-hard, high precision, state-of-the-art control system

The Galileo mission and spacecraft, consisting of a Jupiter-orbiter and an atmospheric entry probe, are discussed. Components will include: magnetometers and plasma-wave antennas on a boom, high-gain antenna, probe vehicle, two different bus electronics packages, and a radioisotope thermoelectric generator. Instruments, investigators and objectives are tabulated for both probe science and orbiter science investigations. Requirements in the design of the attitude and articulation control system are very stringent because of the complex dynamics, flexible body effects, the need for autonomy, and the severe radiation environment in the Jupiter nighborhood. Galileo was intended to be ready for launch via Space Shuttle in May of 1986.

Laboratory and astronomical spectroscopy of C3H2, the first interstellar organic ring

The first laboratory and astronomical observations of the carbene ring molecule C3H2 briefly reported in a recent Letter are described in detail. In the laboratory, 22 millimeter-wave lines have been measured in a He and C2H2 discharge. From these the three rotational constants and the five fourth-order centrifugal distortion constants of C3H2 have been determined to high precision, allowing, in turn, calculation to 0.1 km/s of the most important lines in the radio and far-IR spectrum; 123 lines in the rotational spectrum with E/K less than 100 K are tabulated. Eleven astronomical transitions have been identified, and in Sgr B2 and Orion KL, rotational temperatures and column densities were derived and compared with those of other hydrocarbons with a similar number of C atoms.

Total and dissociative photoionization cross sections of N2 from threshold to 107 eV

The absolute cross sections for the production of N(+) and N2(+) have been measured from the dissociative ionization threshold to 115 A. In addition, the absolute photoabsorption and photoionization cross sections are tabulated between 114 and 796 A. The ionization efficiencies are also given at several discrete wavelengths between 660 and 790 A. The production of N(+) fragment ions are discussed in terms of the doubly excited N2(+) states with binding energies in the range 24 to 44 eV.

1.4 GHz continuum sources in the Cancer cluster

Results of 1.4-GHz continuum observations are presented for 11 VLA fields, using the D-configuration, which contain the A group of the Cnc cluster (CC). Sixteen Zwicky spiral galaxies in the CC were detected, but no ellipticals, confirming the finding that spiral galaxies with close companions tend to have enhanced radio emission. Over 200 continuum sources beyond the CC are tabulated. The spectral index (relative to 610 MHz) is given for many of the sources, including some of the Zwicky galaxies. There is a suggestion for a nonuniform number surface-density distribution of the sources, not correlated with the CC. Possible predictions of such nonuniformities, from assumptions on 'super-superclusters', are discussed.

Axial ratios and orientations for 100 Galactic globular star clusters

Axial ratios and major-axis orientations determined from image processing of Palomar and SRC Sky Survey material are tabulated for a sample of 100 Galactic globular clusters. From a subsample of 99 clusters, the mean axial ratio is found to be 0.93 + or - 0.01. Given that only 32 percent are flatter than b/a less than 0.9, and 5 percent flatter than 0.8, the clusters are found to be quite spherical. As predicted by King (1961 and 1966), tidal interactions by the Galaxy on the cluster are not the means by which the observed ellipticities are produced. Rather, Galactic absorption effects may have a moderate but not dominant effect on the clusters' observed ellipticities, as suggested by van den Bergh (1984). The alternate mechanisms of cluster rotation or anisotropic internal velocity distributions, or both, are considered to be more likely. The observed distribution of axial ratios is statistically indistinguishable from that of a similar-size sample of rotationally flattened clusters, which have axial-ratio values lying in the range of 0.75 less than b/a less than 0.83, and the major axes of which are oriented randomly in space.

Microhardness and lattice parameter calibrations of the oxygen solid solutions of unalloyed alpha-titanium and Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo

Standards were prepared for calibrating microanalyses of dissolved oxygen in unalloyed alpha-Ti and Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo. Foils of both of these materials were homogenized for 120 hours in vacuum at 871 C following short exposures to the ambient atmosphere at 854 C that had partially oxidized the foils. The variation of Knoop microhardness with oxygen content was calibrated for both materials using 15-g and 5-g indentor loads. The unit-cell lattice parameters were calibrated for the unalloyed alpha-Ti. Example analyses demonstrate the usefulness of these calibrations and support an explanation of an anomaly in the lattice parameter variation. The results of the calibrations have been tabulated and summarized using predictive equations.

IRAS observations of southern molecular clouds

A report is given of a project to use IRAS Band 3 (60 microns) and Band 4 (100 microns) observations to investigate the far-infrared properties of southern galactic molecular clouds. A method by which dust temperature and total gas column density can be estimated is presented. Results are tabulated for 65 prominent southern far-infrared sources. The dust temperatures are closely grouped between 30 and 50 K, while the column densities range between 2 x 10 to the 20th and 10 to the 22nd/sq cm. Maps of dust temperature and gas column density have been generated for two fields containing far-infrared sources to illustrate the effectiveness of this form of presentation.

Power density measurements in the near field of the DSS 13 26-meter antenna

Power density measurements were made at Deep Space Station (DSS) 13 in the near field of the 26-m antenna to determine if radio frequency (rf) fields generated by the 20-kW transmitters could be responsible for the failure of three solid state rf amplifiers. These amplifiers are used in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Radio Spectrum Surveillance System, which is currently located at the site. Measurements were made independently for one transmitter at 7150 MHz, and both transmitters together. Measurement results are tabulated and compared with predicted power densities under the measurement conditions. The results agree with the predictions within a factor of two. The predictions appear to give worst case values. Measurements indicated that amplifier failures are not attributable to the transmitter.

Pressure distributions from high Reynolds number transonic tests of an NACA 0012 airfoil in the Langley 0.3-meter transonic cryogenic tunnel

Tests were conducted in the 2-D test section of the Langley 0.3-meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel on a NACA 0012 airfoil to obtain aerodynamic data as a part of the Advanced Technology Airfoil Test (ATAT) program. The test program covered a Mach number range of 0.30 to 0.82 and a Reynolds number range of 3.0 to 45.0 x 10 to the 6th power. The stagnation pressure was varied between 1.2 and 6.0 atmospheres and the stagnation temperature was varied between 300 K and 90 K to obtain these test conditions. Tabulated pressure distributions and integrated force and moment coefficients are presented as well as plots of the surface pressure distributions. The data are presented uncorrected for wall interference effects and without analysis.

Acoustically excited heated jets. 3: Mean flow data

This is Part 3 of a report on the excitability of heated jets under the influence of acoustic excitation. The effects of upstream internal acoustic excitation on jet mixing were described in Part 1. Part 2 described the effects of external excitation on flow mixing. Part 3 contains quantitative results from the measurements of mean Mach number and temperature and consists of radial profiles and centerline distributions measured at selected jet operating conditions for internally excited and unexcited jets. The mean flow data are presented in both graphical and tabulated forms. For the sake of completeness, this part contains temperature probe calibration curves also.
