Search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson to a pair of pseudoscalars in the $μμ bb$ and $ττ bb$ final states

A search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson (H) with a mass of 125 GeV to a pair of light pseudoscalars a 1 is performed in final states where one pseudoscalar decays to two quarks and the other to a pair of muons or leptons. A data sample of proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 recorded with the CMS detector is analyzed. No statistically significant excess is observed over the standard model backgrounds. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level (CL) on the Higgs boson branching fraction to μ μ b b and to τ τ b b via a pair of a 1 s. The limits depend on the pseudoscalar mass m a 1 and are observed to be in the range (0.17–3.3) x 10 -4 and (1.7–7.7) x 10 -2 in the μ μ b b and τ τ b b final states, respectively. In the framework of models with two Higgs doublets and a complex scalar singlet (2HDM+S), the results of the two final states are combined to determine upper limits on the branching fraction ${\mathcal {B}}(\text {H} \rightarrow \text {a}_{1} \text {a}_{1} \rightarrow \ell \ell \text{ b } \text{ b})$ at 95% CL, with ℓ being a muon or a τ lepton. For different types of 2HDM+S, upper bounds on the branching fraction ${\mathcal {B}}(\text {H} \rightarrow \text {a}_{1} \text {a}_{1} )$ are extracted from the combination of the two channels. In most of the Type II 2HDM+S parameter space ${\mathcal {B}}(\text {H} \rightarrow \text {a}_{1} \text {a}_{1} )$, values above 0.23 are excluded at 95% CL for m a 1 values between 15 and 60 GeV.

Search for baryon junctions in photonuclear processes and isobar collisions at RHIC

During the early development of quantum chromodynamics, it was proposed that baryon number could be carried by a non-perturbative Y-shaped topology of gluon fields, called the gluon junction, rather than by the valence quarks as in the QCD standard model. A puzzling feature of ultra-relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is the apparent substantial baryon excess in the mid-rapidity region that could not be adequately accounted for in most conventional models of quark and diquark transport. The transport of baryonic gluon junctions is predicted to lead to a characteristic exponential distribution of net-baryon density with rapidity and could resolve the puzzle. In this context we point out that the rapidity density of net-baryons near mid-rapidity indeed follows an exponential distribution with a slope of –0.61 ± 0.03 as a function of beam rapidity in the existing global data from A+A collisions at AGS, SPS and RHIC energies. To further test if quarks or gluon junctions carry the baryon quantum number, we propose to study the absolute magnitude of the baryon vs. charge stopping in isobar collisions at RHIC. We also argue that semi-inclusive photon-induced processes (γ + p/A) at RHIC kinematics provide an opportunity to search for the signatures of the baryon junction and to shed light onto the mechanisms of observed baryon excess in the mid-rapidity region in ultra-relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions. Such measurements can be further validated in A+A collisions at the LHC and e + p/A collisions at the EIC.

Search for $CP$ violation in D$^0$$\to$ K$^0_\mathrm{S}$K$^0_\mathrm{S}$ decays in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is reported for charge-parity $CP$ violation in D$^0$$\to$ K$^0_\mathrm{S}$K$^0_\mathrm{S}$ decays, using data collected in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment in 2018. The analysis uses a dedicated data set that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 41.6 fb$^{-1}$, which consists of about 10 billion events containing a pair of b hadrons, nearly all of which decay to charm hadrons. The flavor of the neutral D meson is determined by the pion charge in the reconstructed decays D$^{*+}$$\to$ D$^0\pi^+$ and D$^{*-}$$\to$ D$^0\pi^-$. The $CP$ asymmetry in D$^0$$\to$ K$^0_\mathrm{S}$K$^0_\mathrm{S}$ is measured to be $A_{CP}$(K$^0_\mathrm{S}$K$^0_\mathrm{S}$) = (6.2 $\pm$ 3.0 $\pm$ 0.2 $\pm$ 0.8)%, where the three uncertainties represent the statistical uncertainty, the systematic uncertainty, and the uncertainty in the measurement of the $CP$ asymmetry in the D$^0$ $\to$ K$^0_\mathrm{S}\pi^+\pi^-$ decay. This is the first $CP$ asymmetry measurement by CMS in the charm sector as well as the first to utilize a fully hadronic final state.

Search for hadronic decays of feebly-interacting particles at NA62

The NA62 experiment at CERN has the capability to collect data in a beam-dump mode, where 400 GeV protons are dumped on an absorber. In this configuration, New Physics particles, including dark photons, dark scalars, and axion-like particles, may be produced in the absorber and decay in the instrumented volume beginning approximately 80 m downstream of the dump. A search for these particles decaying in flight to hadronic final states is reported, based on an analysis of a sample of 1.4 x 10 17 protons on dump collected in 2021. No evidence of a New Physics signal is observed, excluding new regions of parameter spaces of multiple models.

Search for Θ+ in KLp→K+n reaction in KLF at JLab

The possibility of the existence of multiquark hadrons made of 4-quarks for mesons and 5-quarks for baryons was predicted by Gell-Mann [Phys. Lett. 8, 214 (1964)]. The renewed interest for the search for exotic pentaquark states was initiated by the paper by Diakonov, Petrov, and Polyakov [Z. Phys. A 359, 305 (1997)]. The 2003 experimental reports on the observation of [Formula: see text] pentaquark with [Formula: see text] quark content created a great excitement and many following experiments have reported its observation [K. H. Hicks, Eur. Phys. J. H 37, 1 (2012)]. After high-statistics experiments at JLab, which did not confirm previous claims by the CLAS collaboration, the community concluded that the [Formula: see text] pentaquark either does not exist at all or has an extremely small cross-section, making it currently unobserved. There were different review papers on this subject, questioning the existence of [Formula: see text] or trying to explain the reasons why reaching a conclusion based on production experiments is challenging [M. Amaryan, Eur. Phys. J. Plus 137, 684 (2022)]. To address the challenge of minimal 3-body final states, a formation experiment with a projectile-kaon beam is proposed. In the following, we discuss how the [Formula: see text] could be observed in the [Formula: see text] reaction in the KLF experiment at JLab [M. Amaryan et al. [KLF Collaboration], arXiv:2008.08215 [nucl-ex]].

Quantum Search Compiler (Qsearch) v2.0

Quantum Gate Synthesis is the process of taking a desired quantum gate operation, in this case specified as a unitary matrix, and decomposing it into a list of operations that can actually be performed on a quantum computer. Qsearch is an implementation of a quantum synthesis algorithm based on combining A* search with numerical optimization. It is designed to minimize CNOT count at the expense of having a long runtime. It produces particularly efficient quantum circuits in terms of CNOT count, up until about 4 qubits. It is generally impractical to run Qsearch on circuits with more than 4 qubits, but it can be used as a subroutine in algorithms designed to work with these larger circuits. Qsearch takes the form of a Python package, taking advantage of Numpy and Scipy, with part of the package written in Rust and taking advantage of OpenBLAS, NLOPT, and Google Ceres for faster runtime.

ATCCfinder - Download and Search the ATCC Genome Portal

Much strain-specific sequence data exists in research conducted before the deployment of large sequencing repositories, making it challenging to identify and validate the identity of strains used in these studies through bioinformatics and phenotyping. The American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) is an organization that sells a wide variety of microbes with strain-level taxonomy classification and associated sequenced reference genomes. Currently, ATCC does not provide a method for searching for sequence similarity between a query sequence and their database of reference genomes. Here I propose the software ATCCfinder, which utilizes ATCC application interface software (API) to generate query-able databases from ATCC Genome resources.

Nvd Search To Stix

This code is a python based application that queries the National Vulnerability Database (NVD) API search term and CPE endpoints. It then sifts through the API response and uses the STIX2 python package to create STIX SDOs, SROs, and SCOs from the applicable data. If there are CWEs associated with the bundle, it queries the OpenCVE API for information on the weakness, then translates that data to STIX as well. It then combines all the data into a STIX bundle and outputs it to a JSON file.

VariantStore: an index for large-scale genomic variant search

Abstract Efficiently scaling genomic variant search indexes to thousands of samples is computationally challenging due to the presence of multiple coordinate systems to avoid reference biases. We present VariantStore, a system that indexes genomic variants from multiple samples using a variation graph and enables variant queries across any sample-specific coordinate system. We show the scalability of VariantStore by indexing genomic variants from the TCGA project in 4 h and the 1000 Genomes project in 3 h. Querying for variants in a gene takes between 0.002 and 3 seconds using memory only 10% of the size of the full representation.

The influence of spaceflight on the astronaut salivary microbiome and the search for a microbiome biomarker for viral reactivation

Background: Spaceflight impacts astronauts in many ways but little is known on how spaceflight affects the salivary microbiome and the consequences of these changes on astronaut health, such as viral reactivation. In order to understand this, the salivary microbiome was analyzed with 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, and saliva viral titers were analyzed with quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) with primers specific for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), and varicella zoster virus (VZV) from 10 astronauts pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight. Results: Streptococcus was the most abundant organism in the saliva, making up 8% of the total organisms detected, and their diversity decreased during spaceflight. Other organisms that had statistically significant changes were Proteobacteria and Fusobacteria which increased during flight and Actinobacteria which decreased during flight. At the genus level, Catonella , Megasphera , and Actinobacillus were absent in more than half of saliva samples collected pre-flight but were then detected during flight. In those subjects that already had these genera pre-flight, their relative abundances increased during flight. Correlation analyses between the microbiome and viral titers revealed a positive correlation with Gracilibacteria , Absconditabacteria , and Abiotrophia and a negative correlation between Oribacterium , Veillonella , and Haemophilus . There was also a significant positive correlation between microbiome richness and EBV viral titers. Conclusions: This is the first study to look at how the salivary microbiome changes as a result of spaceflight and the search for bacterial biomarkers for viral reactivation. Further studies examining the role of specific organisms that were shown to be correlative and predictive in viral reactivation, a serious problem in astronauts during spaceflight, could lead to mitigation strategies to help prevent disease during both short and long duration space missions.

Equivalent Point Sources for Simulating Nuclear/Radiological Search Operations

Modeling and simulation can be used to estimate the detection of different types and strengths of radioactive sources. Simulations of shielded gamma-ray sources in complex environments, such as searches in urban areas using vehicle-mounted detectors, can demonstrate what source strengths and shielding combinations should be able to be detected. For faster calculations, gamma-emitting sources that could have different shielding layers can be simulated ahead of time, resulting in equivalent point source emission distributions that can be used in larger simulation models. Larger-scale models will then run faster using equivalent point sources because the shielding layers around the sources have already been accounted for. Accompanying this paper are 260 equivalent point source emission files for 72 sources with different shielding layers, formatted for three different Monte Carlo codes. Users wanting to request versions of the SCALE and/or MCNP software can find details here: https://rsicc.ornl.gov/

Stopping criteria for ending autonomous, single detector radiological source searches

While the localization of radiological sources has traditionally been handled with statistical algorithms, such a task can be augmented with advanced machine learning methodologies. The combination of deep and reinforcement learning has provided learning-based navigation to autonomous, single-detector, mobile systems. However, these approaches lacked the capacity to terminate a surveying/search task without outside influence of an operator or perfect knowledge of source location (defeating the purpose of such a system). Two stopping criteria are investigated in this work for a machine learning navigated system: one based upon Bayesian and maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) strategies commonly used in source localization, and a second providing the navigational machine learning network with a “stop search” action. A convolutional neural network was trained via reinforcement learning in a 10 m × 10 m simulated environment to navigate a randomly placed detector-agent to a randomly placed source of varied strength (stopping with perfect knowledge during training). The network agent could move in one of four directions (up, down, left, right) after taking a 1 s count measurement at the current location. During testing, the stopping criteria for this navigational algorithm was based upon a Bayesian likelihood estimation technique of source presence, updating this likelihood after each step, and terminating once the confidence of the source being in a single location exceeded 0.9. A second network was trained and tested with similar architecture as the previous but which contained a fifth action: for self-stopping. The accuracy and speed of localization with set detector and source initializations were compared over 50 trials of MLE-Bayesian approach and 1000 trials of the CNN with self-stopping. The statistical stopping condition yielded a median localization error of ~1.41 m and median localization speed of 12 steps. The machine learning stopping condition yielded a median localization error of 0 m and median localization speed of 17 steps. This work demonstrated two stopping criteria available to a machine learning guided, source localization system.

Search for New Isotope Production Pathways

The isotope group at Jefferson Lab is carrying out R&D for producing medically interesting radioisotopes, especially those with theranostic (therapeutic and diagnostic) attributes. Here the search for viable production mechanisms has been expanded to multi-step reactions where a daughter is produced from the target and decays into a medically interesting granddaughter radioisotope. It is difficult to find efficient production routes when investigating both the initial excitation reaction as well as the decay routes leading to medically interesting isotopes. The overall goal of this project is to create a structured code in Python to find these decay routes by automatically exploring the large number of isotopes and their possible decay modes. The program structure is described, and preliminary results are presented.
