Data Fusion of Very High Resolution Hyperspectral and Polarimetric SAR Imagery for Terrain Classification

Performing terrain classification with data from heterogeneous imaging modalities is a very challenging problem. The challenge is further compounded by very high spatial resolution. (In this paper we consider very high spatial resolution to be much less than a meter.) At very high resolution many additional complications arise, such as geometric differences in imaging modalities and heightened pixel-by-pixel variability due to inhomogeneity within terrain classes. In this paper we consider the fusion of very high resolution hyperspectral imaging (HSI) and polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) data. We introduce a framework that utilizes the probabilistic feature fusion (PFF) one-class classifier for data fusion and demonstrate the effect of making pixelwise, superpixel, and pixelwise voting (within a superpixel) terrain classification decisions. We show that fusing imaging modality data sets, combined with pixelwise voting within the spatial extent of superpixels, gives a robust terrain classification framework that gives a good balance between quantitative and qualitative results.

Large-scale Nonlinear Approaches for Inference of Reporting Dynamics and Unobserved SARS-CoV-2 Infections

This work focuses on estimation of unknown states and parameters in a discrete-time, stochastic, SEIR model using reported case counts and mortality data. An SEIR model is based on classifying individuals with respect to their status in regards to the progression of the disease, where S is the number individuals who remain susceptible to the disease, E is the number of individuals who have been exposed to the disease but not yet infectious, I is the number of individuals who are currently infectious, and R is the number of recovered individuals. For convenience, we include in our notation the number of infections or transmissions, T, that represents the number of individuals transitioning from compartment S to compartment E over a particular interval. Similarly, we use C to represent the number of reported cases.

CSISAR--Complete System Integrated SAR

The CSISAR tool is GUI based and very simple to use. The algorithms are robust, and the unique processing flows, that the user is stepped through, virtually eliminate the possibility of error in GEOINT production. An integrated data manager is a key part of the CSISAR system. This data manager keeps track of the data available to a user and informs the user of what data is available and what can be done with that data. This keeps the user from having to be trained in the nuances of the algorithms. CSISAR also has an integrated product manager, which helps the user identify, view and manage previously made products. CSISAR was originally developed in 2010-2011 as a Windows based system. It was updated in 2015 to be a Linux based system. This SAND report is intended to make the Product Description and User’s Guide for CSISAR (originally included within the software) more widely available. New is a brief addition of Linux-specific installation details.

SARS-CoV-2 transmission control in California correctional facilities

LBNL provided technical assistance to the CalPROTECT project, which is a collaboration between the University of California, Berkeley and the University of California, San Francisco. The CalPORTECT team provided support and guidance to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and the California Correctional Health Care Services (CCHCS) in their response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The CalPROTECT team provided recommendations to mitigate the risk posed to the residents and staff who live and work in CDCR prisons through considering scientific knowledge of the virus, analyzing anonymized resident and staff level data from CCHCS, evaluation of statewide and institution-level policies, and data collection during site visits to CDCR prisons during the pandemic.

C-NR Sars-Cov-2 (Covid-19) Timeline

At the onset of the pandemic, then C-NR Group Leader, Felicia Taw, asked Roger A. Meade to compile a timeline of covid events. The following entries are announcements, statements, and email messages from the World Health Organization, the LANL homepage, LANL managers and by C Division manager and staff. Although the entries have been slightly edited and streamlined to enhance readability, they retain many of the original markings.
