A large number of distant clusters of galaxies was examined for the presence of a bright compact galaxy or blue stellar object. Nearly 600 square degrees of sky were searched using glass copies of the National Geographic Society-Palomar Observatory Sky Survey plates, and over 20 fields were selected for observation. The objects were examined for infrared and ultraviolet excesses, using wideband filter photography and spectroscopy. Initial findings include a faint, distant cluster of galaxies near the quasi-stellar radio source 4C 37.43 with a red shift of 0.370. One of these galaxies has an emission line at 6895 A, indicating a possible red shift of 0.377 of the 5007 A line of (0 III).
During rapid scanning of the Apollo 15 panoramic camera photography, a peculiar feature was noted in a small patch of mare material lying between the Haemus and the Apennine Mountains. The patch is abnormal in that it is an unbordered plateau with the surface appearing to lie several hundred meters above adjacent mare patches. Significant characteristics of the feature are discussed and two panoramic camera photographs are illustrated.
Data for the 6300 A line of atomic oxygen from the main body airglow photometer on the OGO-D satellite are summarized in a set of 19 maps for various local times at night between 30 August 1967 and 10 January 1968.
The use of the theta-operator method and generalized hypergeometric functions in obtaining solutions to nth-order linear ordinary differential equations is explained. For completeness, the analysis of the differential equation to determine whether the point of expansion is an ordinary point or a regular singular point is included. The superiority of the two methods shown over the standard method is demonstrated by using all three of the methods to work out several examples. Also included is a compendium of formulae and properties of the theta operator and generalized hypergeometric functions which is complete enough to make the report self-contained.
Previously published asymptotic solutions for lunar and interplanetary trajectories have been modified and combined to formulate a general analytical boundary value solution applicable to a broad class of trajectory problems. In addition, the earlier first-order solutions have been extended to second-order to determine if improved accuracy is possible. Comparisons between the asymptotic solution and numerical integration for several lunar and interplanetary trajectories show that the asymptotic solution is generally quite accurate. Also, since no iterations are required, a solution to the boundary value problem is obtained in a fraction of the time required for numerically integrated solutions.
The mass spectra of twenty alkyl carbamates derived from primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols are investigated, using deuterium labeling and high-resolution mass spectrometry. Several of the primary and secondary alcohol derivatives are found to yield an ion formally equivalent to the product ion of a McLafferty rearrangement. Deuterium labeling, however, revealed a lack, in these carbamate derivatives, of the usual site specificity associated with the McLafferty rearrangement. A double hydrogen rearrangement process was observed in the mass spectra of several carbamates derived from tertiary alcohols.
