Search for High-Pressure Silicon Phases: Reaching the Extreme Conditions with High-Intensity Laser Irradiation

Controlling electronic and optical properties of semiconducting materials could substantially expand their functionality and enable new pathways for the formation of ‘smart’ materials for emerging innovative applications. An emerging new path for the synthesis of exotic silicon (Si) polymorphs is irradiation of bulk diamond-cubic Si by ultrashort laser pulses at relativistic intensity above 1019 W/cm2. Exotic polymorphs are formed due to interaction with MeV-energy electrons generated in laser-produced high-temperature plasma state. The unusual Si structures are found in the form of 5–10 nm nanoparticles confined deep in the bulk of 500-μm-thick Si samples. Raman spectroscopy, electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies provide an unequivocal evidence of exotic Si phase formation. A key advantage of such relativistic irradiation lies thereby in the fact that large quantities of such exotic Si is synthesised embedded within the bulk diamond-cubic Si and that further the formed Si polymorphs are stable at ambient temperature and pressure. They are thus available for further studies for electronic applications in selective band gap engineering.

Crystal chemistry at high pressure

The chemistry we are taught in school, and we experience in our daily existence occurs at 1 atm. However, pressure spans an astounding 62 orders of magnitude in the Universe in going from the void of interstellar space to the crushing conditions at the center of a neutron star. The way in which pressure affects chemistry is important for Earth and planetary sciences, materials science, in understanding the extreme conditions experienced in nuclear explosions, and it may be key in addressing the future energy needs of our society. In this article we outline how the often neglected pressure variable affects chemistry, beginning from the way in which atomic energy levels are altered. This lays the foundation for understanding the unique crystal and electronic structures that emerge when matter is squeezed, as well as pressure’s effect on chemical reactivity. Finally, we give an overview of the main concepts behind conventional, or phonon-mediated, superconductivity, and describe how the pressure variable may be key in discovering and designing light-element based materials whose superconducting critical temperatures approach room temperature. Here, we discuss some of the main families of superconducting hydrides that have been predicted computationally, and the experimental successes in this exciting and rapidly developing field.

Enabling High-Temperature and High-Voltage Lithium-Ion Battery Performance through a Novel Cathode Surface-Targeted Additive

We report lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are being used in locations and applications never imagined when they were first conceived. To enable this broad range of applications, it has become necessary for LIBs to be stable to an ever broader range of conditions, including temperature and energy. Unfortunately, while negative electrodes have received a great deal of focus in electrolyte development, stabilization of positive electrodes remains an elusive target. Here, we report a novel additive that shows the ability to protect positive electrodes against elevated temperatures and voltages. This additive can be used in small quantities, and its targeted behavior allows it to remain functional in complex electrolyte packages. This can prove an effective approach to targeting specific aspects of cell performance.

Novel High Resolution High Temperature In-Line Sensors for Steel Manufacturing

To support efficiency, productivity, yield improvements, and future industry 4.0 and SMART manufacturing objectives for a competitive and prosperous steel industry, this program has embarked on an effort to develop, demonstrate and deploy several novel sensing technologies based on fiber optics for use in production steel facilities. Over the duration of this program, our team has successfully demonstrated three of these technologies: (1) near continuous Rayliegh Scattering optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) sensing with single mode silica fibers for temperature sensing to 700 C, (2) semi-distributed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing with multimode sapphire fibers for temperature sensing to >1600 C, and (3) remote in-situ Raman analysis for slag and flux chemistry analysis at steelmaking temperatures >1550 C. Each of these sensor and interrogation systems was developed, refined, and tested in our labs at Missouri S&T and then successfully deployed at SSAB’s production facilities at two sites, one in Montpelier, IA and one in Mobile, AL.

Transmission Lines for High Frequency and High Density Packaging

We report on resistivity and chemical stability of Cr/Au bilayers deposited by sputtering on three kinds of substrates: alumina, aluminum nitride and aluminum nitride coated alumina. The insertion loss of Cr/Au microstrip lines fabricated on these three substrates was low and stable after 100 cycles in the -65 degree C to 125 degree C temperature range.

Elemental segregation to lattice defects in the CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy during high temperature exposures

The influence of small plastic pre-strains on the elevated-temperature stability and microstructure of the equiatomic CrMnFeCoNi FCC solid solution is investigated. Particular attention is given to whether any of the alloy elements segregate to individual dislocations. To that end, CrMnFeCoNi samples were first deformed in tension at room temperature to plastic strains of 0.2 and 2.3%, and subsequently annealed at 973 K for 800 hours. The pre-strains activated planar slip of 1/2<110>-type dislocations on {111}-type glide planes. Interactions of this planar slip with special Σ3 grain boundaries formed a large number of dislocation segments with a <110>-type crystallographic orientation suitable for a credible end-on analysis of dislocation cores in HR-STEM. The cores of the 1/2<110> dislocations pushed up against the investigated grain boundaries were found to be close to the compact configuration. Within the sensitivity of the Super-X EDS mapping, no concentration gradient was detected near dislocations that would indicate enrichment at dislocation cores of any of the elemental constituents of the alloy after the pre-deformation and annealing. However, a Cr-rich tetragonal sigma phase nucleated and grew at grain boundary triple junctions during this anneal, processes that were not accelerated by the enhanced dislocation density present after pre-strain. A clear chromium gradient was observed in the Cr-depleted zones near grain boundaries suggesting that Cr transport occurred by relatively slow diffusion from the bulk to the grain boundaries and then by relatively fast diffusion along the grain boundaries to the precipitates. Accompanying the Cr depletion near grain boundaries is a simultaneous Ni and Mn enrichment, which promotes formation of the L1 0 NiMn phase that is observed on the grain boundaries after prolonged annealing.

Highly-scalable GPU-accelerated compressible reacting flow solver for modeling high-speed flows

Emerging supercomputing systems utilize a combination of central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) in an effort to reach exascale capabilities while minimizing the energy footprint of operating such systems. Such heterogeneous machines introduce new challenges for fluids solvers because the hardware architecture and operation of a GPU are fundamentally different from conventional CPUs. In this work, a general approach for efficient implementation of finite-volume based reacting flow solvers on such heterogeneous systems is presented. Three main challenges, namely, data access pattern, thread divergence, and thread safety, are addressed. Since compressible reacting flows require special methods to deal with chemical reactions, hyperbolic and nonlinear convection terms, and the presence of turbulence, specific algorithms that ensure GPU-based efficiency are developed. The approach is demonstrated on the widely available OpenFOAM open source software by modifying core algorithms for GPU accessibility. The scalability of the resulting solver, is demonstrated using practical test cases, including flow through a scramjet engine and the dynamics of a rotating detonation engine. Here, the solver provides near-ideal scaleup on a large number of GPUs (>3000), and extremely efficient use of the GPUs, with throughput nearly a constant even when processing a large number of control volumes.
