Comparison of Energy Storage and Arbitrage Options for Nuclear Power

Nuclear power is the most reliable source of clean energy and plays a crucial role in decarbonization efforts and national energy security. Achievement of Net-Zero targets depends on the deployment of new Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) – both advanced reactors and large-scale Light-Water Reactors (LWRs) – as well as continuing operations at existing LWR plants. The Light-Water Reactor Sustainability (LWRS) program seeks to extend the lifetime of existing NPPs and improve their economic performance through research into plant modernization, Flexible Plant Operation and Generation (FPOG), risk-informed systems analysis, materials research, and physical security. The FPOG pathway investigates alternative revenue streams for LWRs. When electricity prices are driven low by an oversupply of renewable energy, steam and electricity from an NPP can be used to make value-added products while taking advantage of the low energy price; alternatively, this cheap energy can be stored chemically, electrically, or thermally, and used to regenerate-generate electricity at a later time when energy demand, and therefore the wholesale price of electricity, is higher in an economic concept called arbitrage. The purpose of this report is to investigate energy storage technologies that can store 500 MW of electricity from an LWR for a wide spectrum of durations.

Bid-in Price-Sensitive Load: A Comparison with Fixed Load in a Realistic Test System

Bulk power systems operations, in both simulation and practice, are often built on the principle of minimizing production costs, which assumes to first order that demand is fixed and that the only degrees of freedom for balancing generation and load are supply-side unit commitment and dispatch decisions. The purpose of this report is to interrogate the value of welfare-maximizing markets that not only physically balance demand and supply but also ensure that market outcomes provide consumer value by directly maximizing welfare, defined as the value of consumption minus production costs.

A Comparison of Adverse Meteorology Inputs for Emergency Management and Safety Basis Dispersion Modeling Applications at SRS

The MELCOR Accident Consequence Calculation System (MACCS), used for safety basis accident analyses at SRS, implements adjustment factors to consider the increased vertical turbulence associated with local surface roughness and the increased lateral turbulence associated with time-based plume meander. The two models used for SRS emergency planning radiological consequence assessment, i.e., Hotspot and Puff/Plume, currently do not have an option to input or apply diffusion adjustments for meander or surface roughness. Adverse meteorology conditions at SRS have been determined as E stability class and 1.3 meters per second wind speed for ground level releases. This is the input used for emergency planning models. Contrastingly safety basis analyses use a different input, representing adverse meteorology values as F stability class and wind speeds of 1.3 meters per second (for a ground level release). This results in an apparent discrepancy between the two approaches. In this report we document the differing modeling assumptions, discuss the logic behind each modeling approach used to represent local roughness and plume meander conditions, and numerically compare dispersion coefficients and concentration estimates obtained from each set of model inputs.

Comparison of Response Times for the Thermo ASP-2S1/NRD and Ludlum 30-7B Neutron Instruments

Health Physics Services (HPS) received feedback from a customer service survey regarding the difference in response times between the Thermo ASP-2S1/NRD (Thermo) and Ludlum Model 30-7B (Ludlum). In response to the feedback, tests were performed in the field and duplicated in a laboratory to evaluate and compare each instrument’s response time to reach an applied exposure. The results of the tests showed that optimizing its screen refresh rate by updating the Ludlum’s firmware improves response time, making it more comparable to the Thermo.

Ultra-black coatings for space instruments: a comparison of traditional Ebonol C processes and a method for future repeatability

Ultra-black coatings have served various roles in space instrumentation and hardware. The Ebonol C coating has been used for various missions requiring low reflectivity on aluminum substrates that are electrically conducting. This coating is produced through the formation of a cupric oxide structure on an intermediate layer of copper applied to the aluminum. For many years, this commercial formulation has been used ubiquitously for space instruments. The coating relies upon details of the copper base layer that have been trade secret at various finishing companies, and the availability of the Ebonol C formulated chemistry from the chemical supplier. In recent years, this product has been discontinued at various times, leaving vendors to either rely on expired stock or to formulate their own equivalents. Here, we detail the processing methods, chemistries, and resultant coating structures that produce reflectance performance equivalent to baseline historical reflectance data. This process detail will ensure equivalent performance for such coatings for future missions and link the performance to past and currently deployed instruments.

Data vs. MC Comparison of Light Signal from Cosmic Rays in the ICARUS Detectors

Currently, the ICARUS-T600 liquid argon TPC is collecting data exposed to Booster Neutrino and Numi off-axis beams within the SBN program at Fermilab. A light detection system, based on PMTs deployed behind the TPC wire chambers, is in place to detect vacuum ultraviolet photons produced by ionizing particles in LAr. This system is fundamental for the detector operation, providing an efficient trigger and contributing to the 3D reconstruction of events. Moreover, since the TPC is exposed to a huge flux of cosmic rays due to its operations at shallow depths, the light detection system allows for the time reconstruction of events, contributing to the identification and to the selection of neutrino interactions within the beam spill gates. This contribution will primarily focus on the comparative study (data vs. MC) of light signal of cosmic muons to validate the light emulation.

Comparison of MeshGraphNet Techniques for Subsurface Behavior Prediction during CO2 Sequestration

Carbon sequestration is a vital part of the effort to mitigate anthropogenic climate change. Previously, we have shown that Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) provide the ability to extract meaningful insights during prediction of subsurface behavior in carbon storage projects. However, these models have struggled with long-term prediction accuracy due to error accumulation caused by autoregressive prediction. This research leverages the Illinois Basin – Decatur Project (IBDP) dataset to examine strategies for minimizing loss over time in a MeshGraphNet GNN model to improve reliability of predictions while minimizing inferencing time.
