An Improved Fracture Mechanics-Informed Multiscale Thermomechanical Damage Model for Ceramic Matrix Composites

This paper extends recent work done by the authors in modeling length scale-dependent damage behavior of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) to include effects of local anisotropy introduced by matrix cracking. This model captures scale-dependent damage initiation and propagation behavior of the brittle matrix by employing internal state variable (ISV) theory within a multiscale modeling framework to obtain damaged matrix stress/strain constitutive relationships at each length scale. The damage ISV captures the effects of matrix cracking and growth by using fracture mechanics and the self-consistent scheme to determine the reduced stiffness of the cracked matrix. Matrix cracks, which activate when stress intensity factors near manufacturing induced cavities exceed the fracture toughness of the material, are assumed to be transversely isotropic in the plane of the crack, and matrix anisotropy occurs when the damaged stiffness tensor is rotated from the crack plane to the global axes. The crack progression and temporal evolution of the damage ISV are governed by fracture mechanics and crack growth kinetics. The model effectively captures first matrix cracking, which is the first significant deviation from linear elasticity. The nonlinear predictive capabilities of the material model are demonstrated for monolithic silicon carbide (SiC) and a 2D woven five-harness satin (5HS) carbon fiber SiC matrix (C/SiC) CMC.

Horizon constraints on holographic Green’s functions

We explore a new class of general properties of thermal holographic Green’s functions that can be deduced from the near-horizon behaviour of classical perturbations in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We show that at negative imaginary Matsubara frequencies and appropriate complex values of the wavenumber the retarded Green’s functions of generic operators are not uniquely defined, due to the lack of a unique ingoing solution for the bulk perturbations. From a boundary perspective these ‘pole-skipping’ points correspond to locations in the complex frequency and momentum planes at which a line of poles of the retarded Green’s function intersects with a line of zeroes. As a consequence the dispersion relations of collective modes in the boundary theory at energy scales ω ~ T are directly constrained by the bulk dynamics near the black-brane horizon. For the case of conserved U(1) current and energy-momentum tensor operators we give examples where the dispersion relations of hydrodynamic modes pass through a succession of poleskipping points as real wavenumber is increased. We discuss implications of our results for transport, hydrodynamics and quantum chaos in holographic systems.

A Rényi quantum null energy condition: proof for free field theories

The Quantum Null Energy Condition (QNEC) is a lower bound on the stress-energy tensor in quantum field theory that has been proved quite generally. It can equivalently be phrased as a positivity condition on the second null shape derivative of the relative entropy S rel (ρ||σ) of an arbitrary state ρ with respect to the vacuum σ. The relative entropy has a natural one-parameter family generalization, the Sandwiched Rényi divergence S n (ρ||σ), which also measures the distinguishability of two states for arbitrary n ∈ [1/2, ∞). A Rényi QNEC, a positivity condition on the second null shape derivative of S n (ρ||σ), was conjectured in previous work. In this work, we study the Rényi QNEC for free and superrenormalizable field theories in spacetime dimension d > 2 using the technique of null quantization. In the above setting, we prove the Rényi QNEC in the case n > 1 for arbitrary states. We also provide counterexamples to the Rényi QNEC for n < 1.

Multiplicative noise and the diffusion of conserved densities

Stochastic fluid dynamics governs the long time tails of hydrodynamic correlation functions, and the critical slowing down of relaxation phenomena in the vicinity of a critical point in the phase diagram. In this work we study the role of multiplicative noise in stochastic fluid dynamics. Multiplicative noise arises from the dependence of transport coefficients, such as the diffusion constants for charge and momentum, on fluctuating hydrodynamic variables. We study long time tails and relaxation in the diffusion of a conserved density (model B), and a conserved density coupled to the transverse momentum density (model H). Careful attention is paid to fluctuation-dissipation relations. We observe that multiplicative noise contributes at the same order as non-linear interactions in model B, but is a higher order correction to the relaxation of a scalar density and the tail of the stress tensor correlation function in model H.

The light-ray OPE and conformal colliders

We derive a nonperturbative, convergent operator product expansion (OPE) for null-integrated operators on the same null plane in a CFT. The objects appearing in the expansion are light-ray operators, whose matrix elements can be computed by the generalized Lorentzian inversion formula. For example, a product of average null energy (ANEC) operators has an expansion in the light-ray operators that appear in the stress-tensor OPE. An important application is to collider event shapes. The light-ray OPE gives a nonperturbative expansion for event shapes in special functions that we call celestial blocks. As an example, we apply the celestial block expansion to energy-energy correlators in N = 4 Super Yang-Mills theory. Using known OPE data, we find perfect agreement with previous results both at weak and strong coupling, and make new predictions at weak coupling through 4 loops (NNNLO).

Conformal conserved currents in embedding space

We study conformal conserved currents in arbitrary irreducible representations of the Lorentz group using the embedding space formalism. With the help of the operator product expansion, we first show that conservation conditions can be fully investigated by considering only two- and three-point correlation functions. We then find an explicitly conformally-covariant differential operator in embedding space that implements conservation based on the standard position space operator product expansion differential operator ∂μ, although the latter does not uplift to embedding space covariantly. The differential operator in embedding space that imposes conservation is the same differential operator $D_{ijA}$ used in the operator product expansion in embedding space. We provide several examples including conserved currents in irreducible representations that are not symmetric and traceless. With an eye on four-point conformal bootstrap equations for four conserved vector currents $\langle JJJJ\rangle$ and four energy-momentum tensors $\langle TTTT\rangle$, we mostly focus on conservation conditions for $\langle JJ\mathcal{O}\rangle$ and $\langle TT\mathcal{O}\rangle$. Finally, we reproduce and extend the consequences of conformal Ward identities at coincident points by determining three-point coefficients in terms of charges.

Amplitude/operator basis in chiral perturbation theory

We establish a systematic construction of the on-shell amplitude/operator basis for Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) in D = 4 spacetime dimensions and with an arbitrary number of flavors N f . For kinematic factors, we employ spinor-helicity variables to construct the soft blocks, which are local amplitudes satisfying the Adler’s zero condition, as well as to take into account the reduction in the kinematic basis due to the Gram determinant, which arises at O(p 10 ) when the number of multiplicity N in an amplitude becomes large: N > D. For flavor factors, we include group-theoretic relations at small N f , N f ≤ N, which decreases the flavor basis. The result is obtained by adapting the Young tensor method of constructing the operator basis for generic effective field theories to the case of non-linearly realized symmetries. Working in the massless quark limit, we present purely mesonic operators for both even- and odd-parity at O(p 6 ) and O(p 8 ) for N = 6 and arbitrary N f , and establish a direct correspondence between the amplitude basis and the operator basis. Furthermore, the redundancy due to the Gram determinant is studied at O(p 10 ) for N = 6, 8 and 10.

Twice upon a time: timelike-separated quantum extremal surfaces

The Python’s Lunch conjecture for the complexity of bulk reconstruction involves two types of nonminimal quantum extremal surfaces (QESs): bulges and throats, which differ by their local properties. The conjecture relies on the connection between bulk spatial geometry and quantum codes: a constricting geometry from bulge to throat encodes the bulk state nonisometrically, and so requires an exponentially complex Grover search to decode. However, thus far, the Python’s Lunch conjecture is only defined for spacetimes where all QESs are spacelike-separated from one another. Here we explicitly construct (time-reflection symmetric) spacetimes featuring both timelike-separated bulges and timelike-separated throats. Interestingly, all our examples also feature a third type of QES, locally resembling a de Sitter bifurcation surface, which we name a bounce. By analyzing the Hessian of generalized entropy at a QES, we argue that this classification into throats, bulges and bounces is exhaustive. We then propose an updated Python’s Lunch conjecture that can accommodate general timelike-separated QESs and bounces. Notably, our proposal suggests that the gravitational analogue of a tensor network is not necessarily the time-reflection symmetric slice, even when one exists.

Light dilaton in rare meson decays and extraction of its CP property

Abstract The dilatonϕis a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson associated with the spontaneous breaking of scale invariance in a nearly conformal theory, and couples to the trace of the stress-energy tensor. We analyze experimental constraints on a light dilaton with mass in the MeV–GeV range from rare meson decays. New model-independent inclusive bounds for theb→sϕtransition largely exclude the parameter space of a light dilaton that could explain the muong− 2 anomaly. Despite similarities between a dilaton and a Higgs-portal scalar, the dilaton-photon coupling is enhanced compared to the Higgs-portal scalar due to contributions from loops of the conformal sector. Consequently, the shortened lifetime of the dilaton relaxes bounds fromK→π+ invisible searches at the NA62 experiment and constraints from the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We utilize this fact to search for the dilaton signature at a lepton collider such as the ongoing Belle II experiment. Further, we demonstrate how to extract the CP property of the dilaton using the variation of the differential cross-section ofe + e − →e + e − ϕwith the azimuthal angle between the outgoing leptons.

A two-loop four-point form factor at function level

Recently, the maximally-helicity-violating four-point form factor for the chiral stress-energy tensor in planar $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 super Yang-Mills was computed to three loops at the level of the symbol associated with multiple polylogarithms. It exhibits antipodal self-duality, or invariance under the combined action of a kinematic map and reversing the ordering of letters in the symbol. Here we lift the two-loop form factor from symbol level to function level. We provide an iterated representation of the function’s derivatives (coproducts). In order to do so, we find a three-parameter limit of the five-parameter phase space where the symbol’s letters are all rational. We also use function-level information about dihedral symmetries and the soft, collinear, and factorization limits, as well as limits governed by the form-factor operator product expansion (FFOPE). We provide plots of the remainder function on several kinematic slices, and show that the result is compatible with the FFOPE data. We further verify that antipodal self-duality is valid at two loops beyond the level of the symbol.

Entanglement negativity and replica symmetry breaking in general holographic states

The entanglement negativity $\mathcal{E}$(A : B) is a useful measure of quantum entanglement in bipartite mixed states. In random tensor networks (RTNs), which are related to fixed-area states, it was found in ref. [1] that the dominant saddles computing the even Rényi negativity $\mathcal{E}$ (2k) generically break the ℤ 2k replica symmetry. This calls into question previous calculations of holographic negativity using 2D CFT techniques that assumed ℤ 2k replica symmetry and proposed that the negativity was related to the entanglement wedge cross section. In this paper, we resolve this issue by showing that in general holographic states, the saddles computing $\mathcal{E}$ (2k) indeed break the ℤ 2k replica symmetry.

Islands in de Sitter space

We consider black holes in 2d de Sitter JT gravity coupled to a CFT, and entangled with matter in a disjoint non-gravitating universe. Tracing out the entangling matter leaves the CFT in a density matrix whose stress tensor backreacts on the de Sitter geometry, lengthening the wormhole behind the black hole horizon. Naively, the entropy of the entangling matter increases without bound as the strength of the entanglement increases, but the monogamy property predicts that this growth must level off. We compute the entropy via the replica trick, including wormholes between the replica copies of the de Sitter geometry, and find a competition between conventional field theory entanglement entropy and the surface area of extremal “islands” in the de Sitter geometry. The black hole and cosmological horizons both play a role in generating such islands in the backreacted geometry, and have the effect of stabilizing the entropy growth as required by monogamy. We first show this in a scenario in which the de Sitter spatial section has been decompactified to an interval. Then we consider the compact geometry, and argue for a novel interpretation of the island formula in the context of closed universes that recovers the Page curve. Finally, we comment on the application of our construction to the cosmological horizon in empty de Sitter space.

Primordial monopoles and strings, inflation, and gravity waves

We consider magnetic monopoles and strings that appear in non-supersymmetric SO(10) and E 6 grand unified models paying attention to gauge coupling unification and proton decay in a variety of symmetry breaking schemes. The dimensionless string tension parameter Gμ spans the range 10 –6 – 10 –30 , where G is Newton’s constant and μ is the string tension. We show how intermediate scale monopoles with mass ~ 10 13 – 10 14 GeV and flux ≲ 2.8 × 10 –16 cm –2 s –1 sr –1 , and cosmic strings with Gμ ~ 10 –11 – 10 –10 survive inflation and are present in the universe at an observable level. We estimate the gravity wave spectrum emitted from cosmic strings taking into account inflation driven by a Coleman-Weinberg potential. The tensor-to-scalar ratio r lies between 0.06 and 0.003 depending on the details of the inflationary scenario.

Two loop renormalization of scalar theories using a geometric approach

We derive a general formula for two-loop counterterms in Effective Field Theories (EFTs) using a geometric approach. This formula allows the two-loop results of our previous paper to be applied to a wide range of theories. The two-loop results hold for loop graphs in EFTs where the interaction vertices contain operators of arbitrarily high dimension, but at most two derivatives. We also extend our previous one-loop result to include operators with an arbitrary number of derivatives, as long as there is at most one derivative acting on each field. The final result for the two-loop counterterms is written in terms of geometric quantities such as the Riemann curvature tensor of the scalar manifold and its covariant derivatives. As applications of our results, we give the two-loop counterterms and renormalization group equations for the O(n) EFT to dimension six, the scalar sector of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) to dimension six, and chiral perturbation theory to order p 6 .

Constrained HRT Surfaces and their Entropic Interpretation

Abstract Consider two boundary subregionsAandBthat lie in a common boundary Cauchy surface, and consider also the associated HRT surfaceγ B forB. In that context, the constrained HRT surfaceγ A:B can be defined as the codimension-2 bulk surface anchored toAthat is obtained by a maximin construction restricted to Cauchy slices containingγ B . As a result,γ A:B is the union of two pieces,$$ {\gamma}_{A:B}^B $$ γ A : B B and$$ {\gamma}_{A:B}^{\overline{B}} $$ γ A : B B ¯ lying respectively in the entanglement wedges ofBand its complement$$ \overline{B} $$ B ¯ . Unlike the area$$ \mathcal{A}\left({\gamma}_A\right) $$ A γ A of the HRT surfaceγ A , at least in the semiclassical limit, the area$$ \mathcal{A}\left({\gamma}_{A:B}\right) $$ A γ A : B ofγ A:B commutes with the area$$ \mathcal{A}\left({\gamma}_B\right) $$ A γ B ofγ B . To study the entropic interpretation of$$ \mathcal{A}\left({\gamma}_{A:B}\right) $$ A γ A : B , we analyze the Rényi entropies of subregionAin a fixed-area state of subregionB. We use the gravitational path integral to show that then ≈1 Rényi entropies are then computed by minimizing$$ \mathcal{A}\left({\gamma}_A\right) $$ A γ A over spacetimes defined by a boost angle conjugate to$$ \mathcal{A}\left({\gamma}_B\right) $$ A γ B . In the case where the pieces$$ {\gamma}_{A:B}^B $$ γ A : B B and$$ {\gamma}_{A:B}^{\overline{B}} $$ γ A : B B ¯ intersect at a constant boost angle, a geometric argument shows that then ≈1 Rényi entropy is then given by$$ \frac{\mathcal{A}\left({\gamma}_{A:B}\right)}{4G} $$ A γ A : B 4 G . We discuss how then ≈1 Rényi entropy differs from the von Neumann entropy due to a lack of commutativity of then→ 1 andG →0 limits. We also discuss how the behaviour changes as a function of the width of the fixed-area state. Our results are relevant to some of the issues associated with attempts to use standard random tensor networks to describe time dependent geometries.

The three-point form factor of Tr ϕ 3 to six loops

We study the three-point form factor of the length-three half-BPS operator (Tr ϕ 3 ) in planar $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 Super-Yang-Mills theory, using analyticity and integrability methods. We find that the functions describing the form factor in perturbation theory live in the same restrictive space of multiple polylogarithms as the one describing the form factor of the stress-tensor operator (Tr ϕ 2 ). Furthermore, we find that the leading-order data in the collinear limit provided by the form factor operator product expansion (FFOPE) is enough to fix the form factor uniquely, at least through six loops. We perform various tests of our results using the subleading FFOPE corrections. We also analyze the form factor in the Regge limit where two Mandelstam invariants are large; we obtain a compact representation for the form factor in this limit which is valid to all orders in the coupling.

Towards a real-time computation of timelike hadronic vacuum polarization and light-by-light scattering: Schwinger Model tests

Hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) and light-by-light scattering (HLBL) are crucial for evaluating the Standard Model predictions concerning the muon’s anomalous magnetic moment. However, direct first-principle lattice gauge theory-based calculations of these observables in the timelike region remain challenging. Discrepancies persist between lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations in the spacelike region and dispersive approaches relying on experimental data parametrization from the timelike region. Here, we introduce a methodology employing 1+1-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED), i.e. the Schwinger Model, to investigate the HVP and HLBL. To that end, we use both tensor network techniques, specifically matrix product states, and classical emulators of digital quantum computers. Demonstrating feasibility in a simplified model, our approach sets the stage for future endeavors leveraging digital quantum computers.

Exact β-function of Yang-Mills theory in 2+1 dimensions

To set the stage, I discuss the β-function of the massless O(N) model in three dimensions, which can be calculated exactly in the large N limit. Then, I consider SU(N) Yang-Mills theory in 2+1 space-time dimensions. Relating the β -function to the expectation value of the action in lattice gauge theory, and the latter to the trace of the energy-momentum tensor, Is how that $ \frac{d\ln {g}^2/\mu }{d\ln \mu }=-1 $ for all g and all N in one particular renormalization scheme. As a consequence, I find that the Yang-Mills β -function in three dimensions must have the same sign for all finite and positive bare coupling parameters in any renormalization scheme, and all non-trivial infrared fixed points are unreachable in practice.
