Transient electron scavengers modulate carrier density at a polar/nonpolar perovskite oxide heterojunction

Here, we show how transient electron scavengers can be utilized to control the carrier concentration at polar/non-polar perovskite interfaces. By combining quantitative synchrotron x-ray-based interface structure determination with ab initio modeling, we demonstrate that Nd vacancy formation and the resulting formation of Nd adatoms, stabilized by oxygen scavengers at the growth front, can quantitatively account for the decreased carrier concentration at the SrTiO 3 /n NdTiO 3 /SrTiO 3 (001) heterojunction for n = 1 unit cell. This study yields new insights into growth mechanisms and the effect of transient species and defects on the electronic properties of oxide heterojunctions.

Physical optics simulations for synchrotron radiation sources

Here we describe approaches to high-accuracy physical optics calculations used for the development of x-ray beamlines at synchrotron radiation sources, as well as simulation of experiments and processing of experimental data at some of these beamlines. We pay special attention to the treatment of the partial coherence of x rays, a topic of high practical importance for modern low-emittance high-brightness synchrotron radiation facilities. The approaches are based, to a large extent, on the works of Emil Wolf and co-authors, including the basic scalar diffraction theory and the coherent mode decomposition method. The presented simulation examples are related to the case of the novel Coherent Diffractive Imaging beamline that is currently under development at the National Synchrotron Light Source II at the Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Grazing incidence optics; Proceedings of the Meeting, Orlando, FL, Apr. 3, 4, 1986

Papers are presented on the diffraction-limited performance of grazing incidence optical systems; transverse ray aberrations of Wolter type 1 telescopes; hybrid X-ray telescope systems; surface characterization of grazing incidence optics in the extreme UV and X-ray regions; and the surface roughness properties of synchrotron radiation optics. Topics discussed include the simulation of free-abrasive grinding of grazing incidence mirrors with vertical-honing and flexible blades; mirrors for the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer; the design and development of conical X-ray imaging mirrors; thermal loading considerations for synchrotron radiation mirrors; and grazing incidence optics for synchrotron radiation insertion-device beams. Consideration is given to the interpretation of glancing incidence scattering measurements; damage processes in short wavelength coated FEL optics; the replication of grain incidence optics; and the assembly and alignment of the Technology Mirror Assembly.
