SITCOMTN-154: Initial studies of photometric redshifts with LSSTComCam from DP1

This technote holds reports based on the first analyses of the Data Preview 1 (DP1) data by the Science Unit for photometric redshifts. Although photometric redshifts are not an official DP1 data product, the "Photo-z Science Unit" generated photo-z estimates for every galaxy in DP1 using the available multi-band imaging on a best-effort basis. This work included developing training and test datasets by matching DP1 data to high-quality reference redshifts obtained with spectroscopy, Grism data, and multi-band photometry. The Science Unit used the RAIL software package to make photometric redshift estimates using eight different algorithms, developed simple scientific performance metrics, used those metrics to explore how the performance of the algorithms varied with configuration changes, derived more optimized configurations of the algorithms and tested the performance of those configurations. This work, the resulting data products and expected data distribution mechanism are all described there.

Biases in genome reconstruction from metagenomic data

Background Advances in sequencing, assembly, and assortment of contigs into species-specific bins has enabled the reconstruction of genomes from metagenomic data (MAGs). Though a powerful technique, it is difficult to determine whether assembly and binning techniques are accurate when applied to environmental metagenomes due to a lack of complete reference genome sequences against which to check the resulting MAGs. Methods We compared MAGs derived from an enrichment culture containing ~20 organisms to complete genome sequences of 10 organisms isolated from the enrichment culture. Factors commonly considered in binning software—nucleotide composition and sequence repetitiveness—were calculated for both the correctly binned and not-binned regions. This direct comparison revealed biases in sequence characteristics and gene content in the not-binned regions. Additionally, the composition of three public data sets representing MAGs reconstructed from the Tara Oceans metagenomic data was compared to a set of representative genomes available through NCBI RefSeq to verify that the biases identified were observable in more complex data sets and using three contemporary binning software packages. Results Repeat sequences were frequently not binned in the genome reconstruction processes, as were sequence regions with variant nucleotide composition. Genes encoded on the not-binned regions were strongly biased towards ribosomal RNAs, transfer RNAs, mobile element functions and genes of unknown function. Our results support genome reconstruction as a robust process and suggest that reconstructions determined to be >90% complete are likely to effectively represent organismal function; however, population-level genotypic heterogeneity in natural populations, such as uneven distribution of plasmids, can lead to incorrect inferences.

The Advanced On-board Processor (AOP)

The goal of the Advanced On-Board Processor (AOP) development program is to design, build, and flight qualify a highly reliable, moderately priced, digital computer for application on a variety of spacecraft. Included in this development program is the preparation of a complete support software package which consists of an assembler, simulator, loader, system diagnostic, operational executive, and many useful subroutines. The AOP hardware/software system is an extension of the On-Board Processor (OBP) which was developed for general purpose use on earth orbiting spacecraft with its initial application being on-board the fourth Orbiting Astronomical Observatory (OAO-C). Although the OBP possesses the significant features that are required for space application, however, when operating at 100% duty cycle the OBP is too power-consuming for use on many smaller spacecraft. Computer volume will be minimized by implementing the processor and input/output portions of the machine with large scale integrated circuits. Power consumption will be reduced through the use of plated wire and, in some cases, semiconductor memory elements.

Crop identification and acreage measurement utilizing ERTS imagery

There are no author-identified significant results in this report. The microdensitometer will be used to analyze data acquired by ERTS-1 imagery. The classification programs and software packages have been acquired and are being prepared for use with the information as it is received. Photo and digital tapes have been acquired for coverage of virtually 100 percent of the test site areas. These areas are located in South Dakota, Idaho, Missouri, and Kansas. Hass 70mm color infrared, infrared, black and white high altitude aerial photography of the test sites is available. Collection of ground truth for updating the data base has been completed and a computer program written to count the number of fields and give total acres by size group for the segments in each test site. Results are given of data analysis performed on digitized data from densitometer measurements of fields of corn, sugar, beets, and alfalfa in Kansas.

An experiment with interactive planning models

Experiments on decision making in planning problems are described. Executives were tested in dealing with capital investments and competitive pricing decisions under conditions of uncertainty. A software package, the interactive risk analysis model system, was developed, and two controlled experiments were conducted. It is concluded that planning models can aid management, and predicted uses of the models are as a central tool, as an educational tool, to improve consistency in decision making, to improve communications, and as a tool for consensus decision making.

Pilot's manual for automated 4D guidance system

Operational procedures and modes of an experimental 4D guidance system are described from the pilot's point of view. The system consists of the experimental avionics equipment referred to as STOLAND and a specially developed software package for the STOLAND digital computer. A capture mode of the system provides arrival time control and automatic tracking of the 4D flight path from any feasible initial aircraft state to any waypoint. Precise arrival time at a waypoint is achieved by means of speed control or, if large delays are required, by path stretching. Continuous recomputation and display of the capture flight path prior to engaging the system permits the pilot to determine the exact moment for terminating a holding or path stretching maneuver in order to achieve a specified arrival time.

Perform - A performance optimizing computer program for dynamic systems subject to transient loadings

A description and applications of a computer capability for determining the ultimate optimal behavior of a dynamically loaded structural-mechanical system are presented. This capability provides characteristics of the theoretically best, or limiting, design concept according to response criteria dictated by design requirements. Equations of motion of the system in first or second order form include incompletely specified elements whose characteristics are determined in the optimization of one or more performance indices subject to the response criteria in the form of constraints. The system is subject to deterministic transient inputs, and the computer capability is designed to operate with a large linear programming on-the-shelf software package which performs the desired optimization. The report contains user-oriented program documentation in engineering, problem-oriented form. Applications cover a wide variety of dynamics problems including those associated with such diverse configurations as a missile-silo system, impacting freight cars, and an aircraft ride control system.

A digital algorithm for spectral deconvolution with noise filtering and peak picking: NOFIPP-DECON

Noise-filtering, peak-picking deconvolution software incorporates multiple convoluted convolute integers and multiparameter optimization pattern search. The two theories are described and three aspects of the software package are discussed in detail. Noise-filtering deconvolution was applied to a number of experimental cases ranging from noisy, nondispersive X-ray analyzer data to very noisy photoelectric polarimeter data. Comparisons were made with published infrared data, and a man-machine interactive language has evolved for assisting in very difficult cases. A modified version of the program is being used for routine preprocessing of mass spectral and gas chromatographic data.
