Precision pulse shape simulation for proton detection at the Nab experiment

The Nab experiment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA, aims to measure the beta-antineutrino angular correlation following neutron β decay to an anticipated precision of approximately 0.1%. The proton momentum is reconstructed through proton time-of-flight measurements, and potential systematic biases in the timing reconstruction due to detector effects must be controlled at the nanosecond level. In conclusion, we present a thorough and detailed semiconductor and quasiparticle transport simulation effort to provide precise pulse shapes, and report on relevant systematic effects and potential measurement schemes.

Search for an s -wave resonance in Li 7 just above the proton-decay threshold

Near-threshold resonances play an important role in nucleosynthesis and applied nuclear science. The study of nuclei removed from stability has greatly extended the list of resonances close to decay thresholds. The no core shell model with continuum (NCSMC) recently predicted an s-wave resonance just above the proton-decay threshold of 7 Li at an excitation energy of 10.2 MeV. This potential case of a near-threshold resonance is dependent on the quantum mechanics of the p + 6 He fragments extended into the continuum. Further, the 6 He(d,n) 7 Li* reaction was employed in an attempt to populate this resonance and search for its proton decay via the invariant-mass method. No evidence of this resonance was found. However, the data collected in this search led to better constraints on the energy and width of the isobaric analog state (IAS) with (J π ,T) = (3/2 - , 3/2) and revealed a new weak resonance just above the IAS in energy, predicted by the NCSMC as a (J π , T ) = (3/2 – , 1/2) state and potentially a part of the antianalog structure.

Probing triaxiality beyond the proton drip line: Spectroscopy of Tm 147

Two triaxial states of the proton-decaying nucleus 147 Tm were studied via a comparison of experimental data to results obtained through nonadiabatic quasiparticle calculations. The experimental data were collected in a recoil-decay tagging study using the vacuum-mode recoil separator MARA coupled with the JUROGAM3 $\gamma$-ray spectrometer. The previously proposed level scheme above the triaxial 11/2 - (π⁢ℎ 11/2 ) ground state was confirmed, and the level structure was expanded to cover the states above the weakly populated proton-emitting 5/2 + (πd 5/2 ) isomeric state. Further, it was found that the isomeric state is also triaxial, and possibly more deformed than the ground state.

Entanglement maximization in low-energy neutron-proton scattering

The entanglement properties of neutron-proton scattering are investigated using a measure that counts the number of entangled pairs produced by the action of a scattering operator on a given initial neutron-proton state. All phase shifts relevant for scattering at laboratory energies up to 350 MeV are used. Entanglement is found to depend strongly on the initial state. Entanglement is maximized in very low energy scattering if the initial spin state is | ↑ ↓ >, but not if the initial state is | ↑ ↑ > . At such energies the Hamiltonian obeys Wigner SU(4) symmetry, and an entanglement maximum is a sign of that symmetry. At higher energies the angular dependence of entanglement is strong and the entanglement is large for many scattering angles. Furthermore, the tensor force is shown to play a significant role in producing entanglement at laboratory kinetic energies greater than about 50 MeV.

Double-pion electroproduction off protons in deuterium: Quasifree cross sections and final-state interactions

Here, the single-differential and fully integrated cross sections for quasi-free $π^+π^-$ electroproduction off protons bound in deuterium have been extracted for the first time. The experimental data were collected at Jefferson Laboratory with the CLAS detector. The measurements were performed in the kinematic region of the invariant mass W from 1.3 GeV to 1.825 GeV and photon virtuality Q 2 from 0.4 GeV2 to 1.0 GeV 2 . Sufficient experimental statistics allow for narrow binning in all kinematic variables, while maintaining a small statistical uncertainty. The extracted cross sections were compared with the corresponding cross sections off free protons, which allowed us to obtain an estimate of the contribution from events in which interactions between the final-state hadrons and the spectator neutron took place.

Production of protons and light nuclei in Au +Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 3 GeV with the STAR detector

We report the systematic measurement of protons and light nuclei production in Au +Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 3 GeV by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The transverse momentum (𝑝 𝑇 ) spectra of protons (𝑝) , deuterons (𝑑) , tritons (𝑡) , 3 He , and 4 He have been measured from midrapidity to target rapidity for different collision centralities. We present the rapidity and centrality dependence of particle yields (𝑑⁢𝑁/𝑑⁢𝑦), average transverse momentum (⟨𝑝 𝑇 ⟩), yield ratios (𝑑/𝑝, 𝑡/𝑝, 3 He/𝑝, 4 He/𝑝), as well as the coalescence parameters (𝐵 2 ,𝐵 3 ). The 4⁢𝜋 yields for various particles are determined by utilizing the measured rapidity distributions, 𝑑⁢𝑁/𝑑⁢𝑦. Furthermore, we present the energy, centrality, and rapidity dependence of the compound yield ratios (𝑁 𝑝 ×𝑁 𝑡 /𝑁$^{2}_{d}$) and compare them with various model calculations. Furthermore, the physics implications of these results on the production mechanism of light nuclei and the QCD phase structure are discussed.

Evolution of in-medium baryon-baryon scattering cross sections and stiffness of dense nuclear matter from Bayesian analyses of FOPI proton-flow excitation functions

Within a Bayesian statistical framework using a Gaussian process (GP) emulator for an isospin-dependent Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (IBUU) transport model simulator of heavy-ion reactions with momentum-independent Skyrme interactions, we infer from the proton directed and elliptical flow in mid-central Au + Au reactions, measured at beam energies from 150 to 1200 MeV/nucleon by the FOPI Collaboration, the posterior probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the in-medium baryon-baryon scattering cross section (BBSCS) modification factor 𝑋 (with respect to their free-space values) and the stiffness parameter 𝐾 of dense nuclear matter. Here, we find that the most probable value of 𝑋 evolves from around 0.7 to 1.0 as the beam energy 𝐸 beam /𝐴 increases. On the other hand, the posterior PDF⁡(𝐾) may have dual peaks having roughly the same height or extended shoulders at high 𝐾 values. More quantitatively, the posterior PDF⁡(𝐾) changes from having a major peak around 220 MeV, characterizing a soft EOS in the reaction at 𝐸 beam /𝐴 = 150 MeV, to one that peaks around 320 MeV, indicating a stiff EOS in the reactions at 𝐸 beam /𝐴 higher than about 600 MeV. The transition from soft to stiff happens in mid-central Au + Au reactions at beam energies around 250 MeV/nucleon in which 𝐾 = 220 MeV and 𝐾 = 320 MeV are approximately equally probable. Altogether, the FOPI proton-flow excitation function data indicate a gradual hardening of hot and dense nuclear matter as its density and temperature increase in reactions with higher beam energies.

Measurement of the production cross section of 31 GeV/ c protons on carbon via beam attenuation in a 90-cm-long target

The production cross section of 30.92 GeV/c protons on carbon is measured by the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron by means of beam attenuation in a copy (replica) of the 90-cm-long target of the T2K neutrino oscillation experiment. The employed method for direct production cross-section estimation minimizes model corrections for elastic and quasielastic interactions. The obtained production cross section is $σ_{\text{prod}}$ = 227.6 ± 0.8(stat)$_{\text{-3.2}}^{\text{+1.9}}$(sys) – 0.8(mod) mb. It is in agreement with previous NA61/SHINE results obtained with a thin carbon target, while providing improved precision with a total fractional uncertainty of less than 2%. This direct measurement will reduce the uncertainty of the T2K neutrino flux prediction.

Pions in proton structure and everywhere else

The pion cloud is important in nuclear physics and in a variety of low-energy hadronic phenomena. Here we argue that it is natural to expect it to also be important in lepton-proton deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan studies of proton structure. We compute the necessary consequences of the pion cloud in connection with the recent SeaQuest data. The effects are detailed by using the exact kinematics of the experiment. Good agreement with the measurements is obtained. Thus, the universality of pionic effects is understood.

Search for proton decay via p → μ + K 0 in 0.37 megaton-years exposure of Super-Kamiokande

We searched for proton decay via p → μ + K 0 in 0.37 Mton · years of data collected between 1996 and 2018 from the Super-Kamiokande water Cherenkov experiment. The selection criteria were defined separately for K$^0_S$ and K$^0_L$ channels. No significant event excess has been observed. As a result of this analysis, which extends the previous search by an additional 0.2 Mton · years of exposure and uses an improved event reconstruction, we set a lower limit of 3.6 × 10 33 years on the proton lifetime.

Exploring the impact of high-precision top-quark pair production data on the structure of the proton at the LHC

The impact of recent LHC top-quark pair production single differential cross section measurements at 13 TeV collision energy on the structure of the proton is explored. In particular, the impact of these high-precision data on the gluon and other parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton at intermediate and large partonic momentum fraction x is analyzed. This study extends the CT18 global analysis framework to include these new data. The interplay between top-quark pair and inclusive jet production as well as other processes at the LHC, is studied. In addition, a study of the impact of scale choice on the theory description of the new 13 TeV t t ¯ measurements is performed. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Transversity PDFs of the proton from lattice QCD with physical quark masses

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the transversity isovector- and isoscalar-quark parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton utilizing a perturbative matching at next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy. Additionally, we determine the isovector and isoscalar tensor charges for the proton. In both calculations, the disconnected contributions to the isoscalar matrix elements have been ignored. The calculations are performed using a single ensemble of N f = 2 + 1 highly improved staggered quarks simulated with physical-mass quarks and a lattice spacing of a = 0.076 fm . The Wilson-clover action, with physical quark masses and smeared gauge links obtained from one iteration of hypercubic smearing, is used in the valence sector. Using the NLO operator product expansion, we extract the lowest four to six Mellin moments and the PDFs via a neural network from the matrix elements in the pseudo-PDF approach. In addition, we calculate the PDFs in the quasi-PDF approach with hybrid-scheme renormalization and the recently developed leading-renormalon resummation technique, at NLO with the resummation of leading small- x logarithms. Nonlocal chiral contributions to generalized parton distributions of the proton at nonzero skewness

We compute the one-loop contributions to spin-averaged generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in the proton from pseudoscalar mesons with intermediate octet and decuplet baryon states at nonzero skewness. Our framework is based on nonlocal covariant chiral effective theory, with ultraviolet divergences regularized by introducing a relativistic regulator derived consistently from the nonlocal Lagrangian. Using the splitting functions calculated from the nonlocal Lagrangian, we find the nonzero skewness GPDs from meson loops by convoluting with the phenomenological pion GPD and the generalized distribution amplitude, and verify that these satisfy the correct polynomiality properties. We also compute the lowest two moments of GPDs to quantify the meson loop effects on the Dirac, Pauli, and gravitational form factors of the proton.

Gravitational form factors and mechanical properties of quarks in protons: A basis light-front quantization approach

We compute the gravitational form factors (GFFs) and study their applications for the description of the mechanical properties such as the pressure, shear force distributions, and the mechanical radius of the proton from its light-front wave functions (LFWFs) based on basis light-front quantization (BLFQ). The LFWFs of the proton are given by the lowest eigenvector of a light-front effective Hamiltonian that incorporates a three-dimensional confining potential and a one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling between the constituent quarks solved in the valence Fock sector. We find acceptable agreement between our BLFQ computations and the lattice QCD for the GFFs. Our D -term form factor also agrees well with the extracted data from the deeply virtual Compton scattering experiments at Jefferson Lab, and the results of different phenomenological models. The distributions of pressures and shear forces are similar to those from different models. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Up and down quark structure of the proton

We report an improved measurement of the valence u and d quark distributions from the forward-backward asymmetry in the Drell-Yan process using 8.6 fb − 1 of data collected with the D0 detector in p p ¯ collisions at s = 1.96 . This analysis provides the values of new structure parameters that are directly related to the valence up and down quark distributions in the proton. In other experimental results measuring the quark content of the proton, d quark contributions are mixed with those from other quark flavors. In this measurement, the u and d quark contributions are separately extracted by applying a factorization of the QCD and electroweak portions of the forward-backward asymmetry. Finite-size effects on small- x evolution and saturation in proton and nuclear targets

Within the color glass condensate effective field theory, we assess the importance of including a finite size for the target on observables sensitive to small- x evolution. To this end, we study the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation with impact-parameter dependence in the initial condition. We demonstrate that neglecting the dependence on the impact parameter can result in overestimated saturation effects for protons, while it has little effect for heavy nuclei at the energies available at current experiments. When fixing the nonperturbative parameters to the energy dependence of the exclusive J / ψ photoproduction cross section with proton targets, predictions for lead targets are not sensitive to the applied running-coupling prescription, the scheme chosen to resum large transverse logarithms in the BK equation, or the infrared regulator in the evolution. Proton deflectometry analysis in magnetized plasmas: Magnetic field reconstruction in one dimension

Proton deflectometry is used in magnetized high-energy-density plasmas to observe electromagnetic fields. Here we describe a reconstruction algorithm to recover the electromagnetic fields from proton fluence data in 1-D. The algorithm is verified against analytic solutions and applied to example data. Next, we study the role of source fluence uncertainty for 1-D reconstructions. We show that reconstruction boundary conditions can be used to constrain the source fluence profile and use this to develop a reconstruction using a specified pair of boundary conditions on the magnetic field. From these considerations, we experimentally demonstrate a hybrid mesh-fluence reconstruction technique where fields are reconstructed from fluence data in an interior region with boundary conditions supplied by direct mesh measurements at the boundary.

Form Factors and Two-Photon Exchange in High-Energy Elastic Electron-Proton Scattering

We report new precision measurements of the elastic electron-proton scattering cross section for momentum transfer squared (Q$^2$) up to 15.75 (GeV/c)$^2$. These data allow for improved extraction of the proton magnetic form factor at high Q$^2$ and nearly double the Q$^2$ range of direct longitudinal/transverse separated cross sections. A comparison of our results to polarization measurements establishes the presence of hard two-photon exchange in the $e$-$p$ elastic scattering cross section at > 95 % confidence level for Q$^2$ up to 8 (GeV/c)$^2$.
