Low Temperature CO2 Capture from an NGCC Flue Gas Using a Magnetically Stabilized, Inductively Heated Fluidized Bed Reactor

The lab sorbent testing finalized the sorbent composition and operating conditions for the integrated unit. The bench unit design included COMSOL simulation to finalize the coil design and select initial operating conditions of the power supply system. Fluidized bed testing with the induction heating verified that a heating efficiency of up to 90% can be achieved. The integrated bench unit operations provided valuable data confirming the feasibility of using induction heating for the desorption of CO2. Major challenge observed was the limited working capacity of the sorbent, requiring additional development in future projects. In addition, a large-scale reactor demonstration is required to mitigate the risk of uniform temperature distribution and heating efficiency over a large cross-sectional area when using induction heating.

Study of sample drilling techniques for Mars sample return missions

To demonstrate the feasibility of acquiring various surface samples for a Mars sample return mission the following tasks were performed: (1) design of a Mars rover-mounted drill system capable of acquiring crystalline rock cores; prediction of performance, mass, and power requirements for various size systems, and the generation of engineering drawings; (2) performance of simulated permafrost coring tests using a residual Apollo lunar surface drill, (3) design of a rock breaker system which can be used to produce small samples of rock chips from rocks which are too large to return to Earth, but too small to be cored with the Rover-mounted drill; (4)design of sample containers for the selected regolith cores, rock cores, and small particulate or rock samples; and (5) design of sample handling and transfer techniques which will be required through all phase of sample acquisition, processing, and stowage on-board the Earth return vehicle. A preliminary design of a light-weight Rover-mounted sampling scoop was also developed.

V/STOL wind-tunnel testing

Factors influencing effective program planning for V/STOL wind-tunnel testing are discussed. The planning sequence itself, which includes a short checklist of considerations that could enhance the value of the tests, is also described. Each of the considerations, choice of wind tunnel, type of model installation, model development and test operations, is discussed, and examples of appropriate past and current V/STOL test programs are provided. A short survey of the moderate to large subsonic wind tunnels is followed by a review of several model installations, from two-dimensional to large-scale models of complete aircraft configurations. Model sizing, power simulation, and planning are treated, including three areas is test operations: data-acquisition systems, acoustic measurements in wind tunnels, and flow surveying.

A coherent digital demodulator for multiple signal formats and widely varying data rates

The Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) uses four ground station demodulators for K-band signals with data rates from 1 kb/s to 300 Mb/s. The author discusses the feasibility of replacing these demodulators with a single digital demodulator that may be reconfigured by altering stored parameters to accommodate all signal formats and data rates. This implementation will reduce total ground station cost and facilitate automation of ground station operation. Analysis of system performance concentrates on the carrier tracking loop. Analytic and simulation results relate system performance to parameter values and signal format as data rate and power vary independently on the In-phase and quadrature channels. It is demonstrated that a single digital demodulator can support TDRSS-compatible signals at data rates conservatively extending from 1K symbols/s to 10M symbols/s, using off-the-shelf hardware with 6 or more bits of accuracy.

Space Vehicle Power System Comprised of Battery/Capacitor Combinations

Recent improvements in energy densities of batteries open the possibility of using electric rather that hydraulic actuators in space vehicle systems. However, the systems usually require short-duration, high-power pulses. This power profile requires the battery system to be sized to meet the power requirements rather than stored energy requirements, often resulting in a large and inefficient energy storage system. Similar transient power applications have used a combination of two or more disparate energy storage technologies. For instance, placing a capacitor and a battery side-by-side combines the high energy density of a battery with the high power performance of a capacitor and thus can create a lighter and more compact system. A parametric study was performed to identify favorable scenarios for using capacitors. System designs were then carried out using equivalent circuit models developed for five commercial electrochemical capacitor products. Capacitors were sized to satisfy peak power levels and consequently "leveled" the power requirement of the battery, which can then be sized to meet system energy requirements. Simulation results clearly differentiate the performance offered by available capacitor products for the space vehicle applications.

Investigation of Combined Motor/Magnetic Bearings for Flywheel Energy Storage Systems

Dr. Hofmann's work in the summer of 2003 consisted of two separate projects. In the first part of the summer, Dr. Hofmann prepared and collected information regarding rotor losses in synchronous machines; in particular, machines with low rotor losses operating in vacuum and supported by magnetic bearings, such as the motor/generator for flywheel energy storage systems. This work culminated in a presentation at NASA Glenn Research Center on this topic. In the second part, Dr. Hofmann investigated an approach to flywheel energy storage where the phases of the flywheel motor/generator are connected in parallel with the phases of an induction machine driving a mechanical actuator. With this approach, additional power electronics for driving the flywheel unit are not required. Simulations of the connection of a flywheel energy storage system to a model of an electromechanical actuator testbed at NASA Glenn were performed that validated the proposed approach. A proof-of-concept experiment using the D1 flywheel unit at NASA Glenn and a Sundstrand induction machine connected to a dynamometer was successfully conducted.

Trajectory Guidance for Mars Robotic Precursors: Aerocapture, Entry, Descent, and Landing

Future crewed missions to Mars require improvements in landed mass capability beyond that which is possible using state-of-the-art Mars Entry, Descent, and Landing (EDL) systems. Current systems are capable of an estimated maximum landed mass of 1-1.5 metric tons (MT), while human Mars studies require 20-40 MT. A set of technologies were investigated by the EDL Systems Analysis (SA) project to assess the performance of candidate EDL architectures. A single architecture was selected for the design of a robotic precursor mission, entitled Exploration Feed Forward (EFF), whose objective is to demonstrate these technologies. In particular, inflatable aerodynamic decelerators (IADs) and supersonic retro-propulsion (SRP) have been shown to have the greatest mass benefit and extensibility to future exploration missions. In order to evaluate these technologies and develop the mission, candidate guidance algorithms have been coded into the simulation for the purposes of studying system performance. These guidance algorithms include aerocapture, entry, and powered descent. The performance of the algorithms for each of these phases in the presence of dispersions has been assessed using a Monte Carlo technique.

Multiscale Hybrid Modeling of the Impact Response of the Earth's Magnetotail to Ionospheric O+ Outflow

Ionospheric outflow plays an important role in coupling the ionosphere with the solar wind-magnetosphere system. Previous multi-fluid MHD studies explored the global influence of oxygen ions of ionospheric origin (O+) on magnetospheric dynamics. A detailed exploration of the interaction of ionospheric ions with the magnetotail requires kinetic treatment for ions. We perform a self-consistent investigation of these processes with a three-dimensional space-time adaptive hybrid code, HYPERS, powered by an intelligent Event-driven Multi-Agent Planning System (EMAPS). By comparing simulations with and without outflow we conclude that oxygen ions, flowing from the ionosphere through the lobes into the tail or directly entering the inner magnetosphere, are able to significantly modify the magnetotail configuration and induce X-points and current sheet structures at locations where magnetic reconnection does not occur in a simulation without outflow, potentially very close to the Earth. This finding may have implications for interpreting substorms and magnetotail reconnection events observed for southward magnetic field simultaneously with significant contents of oxygen ions of ionospheric origin.

Software systems for modeling articulated figures

Research in computer animation and simulation of human task performance requires sophisticated geometric modeling and user interface tools. The software for a research environment should present the programmer with a powerful but flexible substrate of facilities for displaying and manipulating geometric objects, yet insure that future tools have a consistent and friendly user interface. Jack is a system which provides a flexible and extensible programmer and user interface for displaying and manipulating complex geometric figures, particularly human figures in a 3D working environment. It is a basic software framework for high-performance Silicon Graphics IRIS workstations for modeling and manipulating geometric objects in a general but powerful way. It provides a consistent and user-friendly interface across various applications in computer animation and simulation of human task performance. Currently, Jack provides input and control for applications including lighting specification and image rendering, anthropometric modeling, figure positioning, inverse kinematics, dynamic simulation, and keyframe animation.
