Costing the OMNIUM-G system 7500

A complete OMNIUM-G System 7500 was cost analyzed for annual production quantities ranging from 25 to 10,000 units per year. Parts and components were subjected to in-depth scrutiny to determine optimum manufacturing processes, coupled with make or buy decisions on materials and small parts. When production quantities increase both labor and material costs reduce substantially. A redesign of the system that was analyzed could result in lower costs when annual production runs approach 100,000 units/year. Material and labor costs for producing 25, 100, 25,000 and 100,00 units are given for 17 subassembly units.

A preliminary 'test case' manufacturing sequence for 50 cents/watt solar photovoltaic modules in 1986

The paper describes a 'test case' manufacturing process sequence for solar photovoltaic modules which will cost 50 cents/watt in 1986. The process, which starts with the purification of silicon grown into 75-mm-wide thin ribbons, is discussed, and the plant layout is depicted; each department is sized to produce 250 MW of modules/per year. The cost of this process sequence is compared to present technology at various companies showing considerable spread for each process; data are tabulated in a composite state-of-the-art cell processing cost summary for these processes.

Evaluation program for secondary spacecraft cells: Initial evaluation tests of General Electric Company, 6.0 ampere-hour nickel-cadmium spacecraft cells for the GOES-D, E and F satellite program

The tests are to insure that all cells put into the life cycle program are of high quality by the screening of cells found to have electrolyte leakage, internal shorts, low capacity, or inability of any cell to recover its open-circuit voltage above 1.150 volts during the internal short test. Test limits specify those values at which a cell is to be terminated from charge or discharge. Requirements are referenced to normally expected values based on past performance of aerospace nickel-cadmium cells with demonstrated life characteristics. Recommendations for the improvement of the manufacturing processes are presented.

Introduction to ball bearings

The purpose of a ball bearing is to provide a relative positioning and rotational freedom while transmitting a load between two structures, usually a shaft and a housing. For high rotational speeds (e.g., in gyroscope ball bearings) the purpose can be expanded to include rotational freedom with practically no wear in the bearing. This condition can be achieved by separating the bearing parts with a coherent film of fluid known as an elastohydrodynamic film. This film can be maintained not only when the bearing carries the load on a shaft, but also when the bearing is preloaded to position the shaft to within micro- or nano-inch accuracy and stability. Background information on ball bearings is provided, different types of ball bearings and their geometry and kinematics are defined, bearing materials, manufacturing processes, and separators are discussed. It is assumed, for the purposes of analysis, that the bearing carries no load.

Reliability achievement in high technology space systems

The production of failure-free hardware is discussed. The elements required to achieve such hardware are: technical expertise to design, analyze, and fully understand the design; use of high reliability parts and materials control in the manufacturing process; and testing to understand the system and weed out defects. The durability of the Hughes family of satellites is highlighted.

Charge injection device evaluation hardware

A microprocessor based system which provides maximum testing flexibility via software reconfiguration is described. This system has the capability to evaluate a charge injection device (CID) and to characterize its performance. The construction and operation of the CID offer advantages over the various CCD configurations available. These advantages include a less sophisticated manufacturing process, no images smearing during readout, high transfer efficiencies, and high resistance to blooming due to optical overload.

Design of a high precision microwave reflector

Development of a high accuracy spherical microwave reflector to support contour RMS and pointing requirements for a new series of space instruments is reported. The reflector system is composed of precision machined aluminum tile reflectors supported from a eutectic coated graphite epoxy structure by flexures. Several basic technologies have been integrated into a manufacturing process that accommodates fabrication techniques of both optical and composite constraints. The optical figure and its change due to thermal gradient was measured in a thermal vacuum environment with a Ronchi system. The radiometer system is in support of the Microwave Limb Sounder, an experiment to measure emissions from earth's atmospheric limb thus obtaining wind, temperature, pressure and chemical composition measurements.

The effects of impurities on the performance of silicon solar cells

The major factors that determine the tolerable concentrations of impurities in silicon feedstock for solar cells used in power generation are discussed in this report. It is concluded that a solar-grade silicon can be defined only for a specific manufacturing process. It is also concluded that it is the electrical effects, efficiency and resistivity, that are dominant in determining tolerable concentrations of impurities in the silicon feedstock. Crystal growth effects may become important when faster growth rates and larger crystal diameters are developed and used.

ID slicing and the automated factory

The automation of the slicing system utilizing internal-diameter saws for the production of the silicon wafers used in solar arrays is discussed. It is argued that saw productivity can be increased by reducing silicon waste, decreasing usage of consumables, keeping the saw slicing, and increasing the cutting speed. Several machine enhancements utilizing automatic control are discussed. The need for record keeping to anticipate maintenance operations is noted, and a digital serial communication interface with the microprocessor-based saws is recommended. Distributed control of the manufacturing process is discussed in detail, and is recommended as a method for increasing productivity.

Development of a solar receiver for an organic Rankine cycle engine

A prototype power conversion assembly (PCA) developed by an American aerospace company is considered. The PCA will be mounted at the focal point of a 12 meter parabolic dish and will produce approximately 20 kW of 3 kHz ac power to a ground-mounted rectifier. The PCA includes a cavity receiver coupled to an organic Rankine cycle engine. The engine working fluid is toluene. The performance goals of the receiver design are to maximize both the thermal efficiency and the heat capacity of the core. The latter goal is desired for stabilizing the PCA operation during intermittent cloud cover. The receiver design is based upon the utilization of a direct-heated copper shell. It was necessary to develop a feasible manufacturing process for assuring a good braze joint between the stainless steel, containing the toluene, and the copper shell.

Hard permanent magnet development trends and their application to A.C. machines

The physical and magnetic properties of Mn-Al-C, Fe-Cr-Co, and RE-TM (rare earth-transition metal intermetallics) in polymer and soft metal bonded or sintered form are considered for ac circuit machine usage. The manufacturing processes for the magnetic materials are reviewed, and the mechanical and electrical properties of the magnetic materials are compared, with consideration given to the reference Alnico magnet. The Mn-Al-C magnets have the same magnetic properties and costs as Alnico units, operate well at low temperatures, but have poor high temperature performance. Fe-Cr-Co magnets also have comparable cost to Alnico magnets, and operate at high or low temperature, but are brittle, expensive, and contain Co. RE-Co magnets possess a high energy density, operate well in a wide temperature range, and are expensive. Recommendation for exploring the rare-earth alternatives are offered.

Attitude Control by Localized Outgassing

Attitude control of levitated object achieved by using laser to vaporize selectively sublimate coating. Laser heats material that will sublime or outgas. To obtain torque reaction force vector from subliming material must not pass through center-of-mass of object. The UARS and open data concept and analysis study

Alternative concepts for a common design for the UARS and OPEN Central Data Handling Facility (CDHF) are offered. Costs for alternative implementations of the UARS designs are presented, showing that the system design does not restrict the implementation to a single manufacturer. Processing demands on the alternative UARS CDHF implementations are then discussed. With this information at hand together with estimates for OPEN processing demands, it is shown that any shortfall in system capability for OPEN support can be remedied by either component upgrades or array processing attachments rather than a system redesign. In addition to a common system design, it is shown that there is significant potential for common software design, especially in the areas of data management software and non-user-unique production software. Archiving the CDHF data are discussed. Following that, cost examples for several modes of communications between the CDHF and Remote User Facilities are presented. Technology application is discussed.
