Detection of X-rays from Algol /beta Persei/

X-rays in the 2-6 keV band were detected from the Algol system using the rotating modulation collimator system on SAS-3 during an observation in October 1975. The measured X-ray flux is 3.8 x 10 to the -11th ergs/sq cm/s/keV. No positive detection was made in the 6-11 keV band. The data are consistent with either a power-law spectrum with photon spectral index not less than 2.5 or a thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum with a temperature not greater than 3 x 10 to the 7th K.

Observations of the O2 column density between 120 and 70 km and absorption cross section in the vicinity of H Lyman alpha

From solar spectra obtained during the re-entry of Calroc 4 the optical depth of the atmosphere in the wavelength interval 1213-1219 A has been obtained for altitudes between about 120 and 70 km. The data are consistent with the interpretation that molecular oxygen is the primary absorbing species under these conditions if the values of the O2 cross section in the 1216.2- to 1217.2-A region are approximately those of Ogawa (1968) and the O2 column densities in the 80-km region are approximately those derived from the 8-0 and 11-0 Schumann-Runge bands observed during the same flight.

Comparison of volcanic features of Elysium /Mars/ and Tibesti /Earth/

The summit caldera and flank morphologies of Elysium Mons on Mars and Emi Koussi in the Tibesti region in northern Chad are similar in many ways. In both cases the large central caldera is about 12 km in diameter and from 500 to 1000 m deep; both calderas contain numerous craters and large irregular pits. Crater size/frequency analysis of Elysium Mons is thought to indicate that most of the craters are of endergonic origin. The flanks, characterized by subdued hummocky terrain, differ from those of the younger Tharsis Ridge and show little if any sign of recent material flow. Evidence against pluvial episodes within 100,000 or 1,000,000 years is provided by the lack of aqueous erosional forms. It is suggested that the source of the Elysium volcanics has been chemically evolved and probably involves silicic magma. The data are consistent with the view that the martian crust has been stable and essentially motionless for an extended period of martian geologic time.

The vertical distribution of HCl in the stratosphere

The vertical distribution of HCl in the stratosphere has been measured from infrared solar absorption spectra recorded with a balloon-borne interferometer. The flights were made in September, 1975, and May, 1976 at float altitudes of 40 km and 37 km, respectively, near Palestine, Texas. Concentration profiles derived from the data show an increase from 0.6 ppbv at 20 km to 1.7 plus or minus .5 ppbv in the region of 37 km. Above 37 km, the data permit only the total abundance to be determined; this value is found to be equivalent to 1.6 plus or minus .6 ppbv if the gas were uniformly mixed. The results from the two flights are closely similar, and no significant seasonal variation in the HCl concentrations can be discerned. The balloon data are consistent with the profile in the 14-21 km altitude region of the stratosphere reported earlier from U-2 observations.

Global and regional N2O measurements

Real-time N2O measurements have been made in situ at the South Pole, Antarctica, north and south of the equator from on board the Alpha Helix and over the Pacific Ocean on several aircraft flights from the U.S. to New Zealand, Australia and 90 deg S. In addition, an automated EC-GC has been operated for the past year intermittently monitoring N2O in surface air at a rural site in the wheatlands of eastern Washington state. The data obtained are consistent and in agreement with the data obtained from the analyses of a large number of samples collected both from ground stations and a variety of aircraft flights made in the southern and northern hemisphere. The observed global data show no interhemispheric differences. The present concentration of N2O in the troposphere is measured to be 330 + or - 3 ppbv. Its vertical distribution in the troposphere is very uniform. A small decrease (2-3 percent) across the tropopause is characteristically observed in the high-altitude flights.

Experiments on the dynamic behavior of cavitating pumps

This paper describes experiments performed to measure the dynamic transfer matrices for cavitating (and noncavitating) pumps. These transfer matrices describe the relationship between small linear oscillatory perturbations in the pressures and mass flow rates at inlet and discharge from the hydraulic machine. The matrices were deduced from direct measurements of these fluctuating quantities for different modes of excitation of the machine. Results for a cavitating inducer are presented as functions of frequency and mean operating state. Though some of the trends in the data are consistent with existing theoretical models of inducer dynamics, others are not, indicating a need for further theoretical investigation of the dynamic characteristics of such flows. The results exhibit increasingly complex dynamics with increasing cavitation; it appears that the hydraulic machine deviates from an essentially passive response without cavitation to an increasingly active response as the cavitation number is reduced.

Anomalous krypton in the Allende meteorite

The reported investigation provides important new data for the heavy noble gases, especially Kr, in the Allende meteorite. The data are used to criticize the original model of Lewis et al. (1975) based on the noble gas data of these researchers. The conclusions reached in the investigation support alternative models which have been mainly based on Xe data by Lewis et al. (1975, 1977). Because of the relatively high noble gas abundances in the separates studied, disturbance from nuclear effects occurring in situ such as spallation and neutron capture is insignificant, offering an opportunity to study primordial Ar, Kr, and Xe. The isotopic and abundance data obtained from the samples largely confirm the noble gas results of Lewis et al. (1975, 1977) where isotopic correlations agree with the correlations of the considered samples. It is found that both Kr and Xe data are consistent with a two component mixture of 'ordinary' as well as 'anomalous' planetary gases.

Geologic-magnetic correlations on the moon - Apollo subsatellite results

Comparison of the magnetic-field measurements of the Apollo subsatellite magnetometers with USGS geologic maps suggests that the ancient lunar field may have been greater during the Imbrian Period than the earlier Pre-Nectarian and Nectarian periods. Further, the field seems to have varied in direction. These data are consistent with a model in which the ancient lunar magnetizing field arises from a core dynamo which does not form until the Imbrian Period. Impacts during this period then result in magnetized crater melt and ejecta blankets. It is emphasized, however, that the area sampled by the subsatellite magnetometers is but a small fraction of the lunar surface. These results must be confirmed with studies of independent regions of the lunar surface before they can be considered conclusive.

4.2-4.3 AE anorthositic soil fragments - Equilibrated or unequilibrated polycomponent systems

The petrographies and phase chemistries of five lunar crystalline anorthositic fragments with Ar-40/Ar-39 plateau 'ages' ranging from 4.1 to 4.3 AE are reported. An investigation is conducted to determine whether the individual fragments are monomict or polymict breccias. For polymict breccias it is attempted to establish whether clasts and matrix have equilibrated chemically. On the basis of the results of the investigation it is suggested that sample 73263,1,1 was a breccia (possibly a clast-laden melt) containing old clasts, incorporated in an ejecta blanket that was annealed at about 4.1 AE in a transient high-temperature event. The sample 73263,1,6 studied is an annealed anorthositic breccia containing approximately 20% clasts dominated by single-crystal plagioclase fragments. The obtained data are consistent with a two-component system containing old plagioclase clasts in a young (about 4.0 AE) annealed, matrix. The annealing event at approximately 4.0 AE was insufficient to equilibrate the argon. It is found that four of the breccias having ages of about 4.2 AE or more are polymict. The most striking feature of all of the samples studied is the presence of a significant amount of 4.2-4.3 AE argon.

Large-scale impact and explosion craters - Comparisons of morphological and structural analogs

Crater studies indicate now that there are a broad set of morphological and structural analogs which occur in both impact and explosion craters. A description is presented of impact and explosion analogs for three basic crater types, including bowl-shaped craters, flat-floored craters with central uplift, and flat-floored craters with multirings. A systematic documentation is provided of the more critical morphological and structural analogs common between large natural bowl-shaped impact and explosion craters, between central uplift impact and explosion craters, and between multiring impact and explosion craters. The data presented consist of a set of published and unpublished cratering studies assembled into a single ordered outline with each crater described in the same format and graphic style.

On large poleward-directed electric fields at sub-auroral latitudes

Intense poleward-directed electric fields were observed by OGO-6 in the premagnetic midnight F-region, close to the Harang discontinuity and at latitudes of less than 60 deg invariant. These results support the recent measurements of Smiddy et al. (1977). Both sets of data are consistent with a compression of equipotentials on the low latitude edge of the premidnight convection cell, caused by an impediment of the substorm-related southwestward expansion of the convection pattern.

Methane-producing bacteria - Natural fractionations of the stable carbon isotopes

Procedures for determining the C-13/C-12 fractionation factors for methane-producing bacteria are described, and the fractionation factors (CO2/CH4) for the reduction of CO2 to CH4 by pure cultures are 1.045 for Methanosarcina barkeri at 40 C, 1.061 for Methanobacterium strain M.o.H. at 40 C, and 1.025 for Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum at 65 C. The data are consistent with the field determinations if fractionation by acetate dissimilation approximates fractionations observed in natural environments. In other words, the acetic acid used by acetate dissimilating bacteria, if they play an important role in natural methane production, must have an intramolecular isotopic fractionation (CO2H/CH3) approximating the observed CO2/CH4 fractionation.

An unusually large westerly amplitude of the quasi-biennial oscillation

A time-height section of the quasi-biennial oscillation is presented for the period 1950-1978. The data are from the Canal Zone station through June 1970 and from Kwajalein from July 1970 through April 1978 (both stations are near 9 deg N). The most striking feature in the new data is the unusually strong westerly phase which occurred in the winter of 1977-1978. The magnitude of the westerly amplitude in December 1978 was over 60 m/sec at and above 10 mb. The easterly phase below the westerly phase of the 1977-1978 winter was also unusually large. The other features in the new data are consistent with past observations.

Compact H II regions in the far-infrared

Far-infrared (40-150 microns) observations of W51 (G49.5-0.4), K3-50, DR 21, NGC 7538, and W3(OH) are presented and discussed. At these wavelengths each source is dominated by a small bright component closely associated with a compact H II region. Their spectra can be explained as emission by dust at temperatures of 30-50 K. Some of the objects appear to be optically thick out to wavelengths of about 60 microns. Of the 10 source components in the five regions, at least four may be powered by pre-main-sequence stars. The far-infrared data are consistent with depletion of volatile components of the dust within compact H II regions, but do not clearly require destruction or expulsion of refractory grains. The bulk of the dust which emits primarily in the far-infrared must lie in a dense shell immediately outside the ionized zone. The sources are possible precursers to open clusters with stellar masses in the range from 1,000 to 10,000 solar masses.

Origin and history of the adcumulate eucrite, Moama as inferred from REE abundances, Sm-Nd and U-Pb systematics

The abundances of Sm-Nd and U-Pb isotopes and of rare earth elements (REE) in Moama cumulate eucrite were investigated. The Sm-Nd data plotted on a Nd-143/Nd-144 vs Sm-147/Nd-144 evolution diagram define a line with a slope corresponding to an age of 4.58 plus or minus 0.05 billion years and an initial Nd-143/Nd-144 ratio of about 0.50684. Moama was found to contain the lowest overall trivalent REE abundances, the most light REE-depleted abundance pattern, and largest positive Eu anomaly of any eucrite yet studied. The REE data indicate that Moama could have been derived by about 1 to 5% fractional crystallization from a liquid with REE contents similar to Juvinas, or about 20 to 30% fractional crystallization from a Sioux County-like liquid. The data are consistent with the hypothesis that the Moama, Serra de Mage, and Moore county cumulate meteorites could have been derived from the same parent liquid. Results of the U-Th-Pb study indicate that the majority of the Pb in Moama is of terrestrial origin, and suggest that the meteorite has undergone a minor thermal event causing re-equilibration of the U-Pb system.

Far ultraviolet photometry of intermediate brightness stars from Apollo-Soyuz

We present photoelectric photometry in the 1350-1600 A band of 52 stars of intermediate brightness, using data obtained in 1975 July with a grazing incidence telescope aboard the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. Upper or lower limits on the brightness of 106 additional objects which were spatially blended with one or more companions were also obtained. The data sample consists of stars with V not greater than 7.5 and spectral types from O6 through A5. When corrected for interstellar extinction, the ultraviolet photometry on a two-color diagram agrees very well with the predictions of the revised blanketed model atmospheres by Kurucz. Attention is also drawn to an anomalously UV-bright object which is probably associated with HD 100493.

The 1979 X-ray outburst of Cen X-4

X-ray observations of the first major outburst (since its initial discovery in 1969) of the "classical" transient X-ray source Cen X-4 were obtained with the Ariel 5 All-Sky Monitor. The flare light curve exhibits a double-peaked maximum at a level of approximately 4 times the Crab nebula, and its duration and characteristic decay time scale are the shortest yet observed from the class of "soft" X-ray transients. A total X-ray output of approximately 3 x 10 to the 43rd power ergs, a factor of approximately 20 less than that of the 1969 outburst is estimated. In addition, evidence is found for a regular modulation of the flux during the decline phase at a period of 8.2 plus or minus 0.2 hours. The existing data are consistent with a source model involving episodic mass exchange from a late-type dwarf onto a neutron star comparison in a relatively close binary system.
