Circularly Polarized Attosecond Pulses Enabled by an Azimuthal Phase and Polarization Grating

High-harmonic generation (HHG) is an extreme nonlinear optical process that can map the properties of an infrared driving laser beam onto short wavelength attosecond pulse trains. However, current techniques for generating circularly polarized high harmonics for probing magnetic materials and chiral systems have limitations: two-color collinear counter-rotating driving lasers result in a low cutoff photon energy, while single-color non-collinear counter-rotating schemes suffer from low conversion efficiency. In this work, we generate circularly polarized attosecond pulse trains by using a structured laser driver which has a rotating polarization and phase grating along the azimuthal coordinate. Furthermore, our experimental and numerical results demonstrate the production of left and right circularly polarized harmonics, which naturally separate upon propagation. Our approach uses a single laser color in a collinear geometry, that can be scaled for high efficiency. Simulations show this scheme can extend into the soft x-ray region when driven by mid-infrared driving lasers, while preserving the same high phase-matching cutoff photon energy as for linearly-polarized high harmonics.

Measurement of magnetic dipole strength in 40 Ar between 9.3 and 10.3 MeV excitation energy and impact on neutral current neutrino interaction

The magnetic dipole strength 𝐵⁡(𝑀⁢1 ↑) of 40 Ar was measured in the excitation energy range between 9.3 and 10.3 MeV. The nuclear resonance fluorescence technique was used with monoenergetic, linearly polarized incident photon beams. The new data increase the known 𝐵⁡(𝑀⁢1 ↑) strength in this important excitation energy range by a factor of 2, resulting in an equivalent increase of the calculated neutral current neutrino cross section of 40 Ar . This observation is of special interest for liquid-argon (LAr)-based neutrino detectors. 𝐵⁡(𝑀⁢1 ↑) strength has not been found between 10.3 and 11.7 MeV excitation energy. In conclusion, with the new data, a more reliable detection capability of the large Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment LAr detectors can be derived for potential core-collapse supernova neutrinos via the neutral current interaction.

Testing shell-model interactions at high excitation energy and low spin: Nuclear resonance fluorescence in Ge 74

With their complex low-spin structure, the germanium isotopes have accrued a large number of experimental data which challenge nuclear models. The structure of the 74 Ge isotope is investigated here with nuclear resonance fluorescence as part of an extensive campaign of experimental tests of the shell model in the germanium isotopic chain using a number of complementary techniques. Levels were excited with 3.10 – 5.44 MeV photon beams provided by the High Intensity Gamma-Ray Source at TUNL. Many new levels were identified and their spins, parities, branching ratios, and associated scattering cross section values were determined. Large-scale shell-model calculations, which include jj44b and JUN45 effective interactions developed to describe nuclei in this mass region, predict the new data satisfactorily. Herein this study extends the validation of these two interactions, which are candidates for computation of matrix elements to be used in the interpretation of neutrinoless double-β decay experiments in 76 Ge, into the low-spin, high excitation energy domain.

Beam Measurements of the Tianlai Dish Radio Telescope using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

Precision measurement of the beam pattern of an antenna is very important for many applications. While traditionally such measurement is often made in a microwave anechoic chamber or at a test range, measurement using an unmanned aerial vehicle offers a number of advantages: the measurement can be made for the assembled antenna on site, thus reflecting the actual characteristics of the antenna of interest, and more importantly, it can be performed for larger antennas which cannot be steered or easily measured using the anechoic chamber and test range. Here we report our beam measurement experiment with UAV for a 6 meter dish used in the Tianlai array, which is a radio astronomy experiment. Due to the dish's small collecting area, calibration with an astronomical source only allows for determining the antenna beam pattern over a very limited angular range. We describe in detail the setup of the experiment, the components of the signal transmitting system, the design of the flight path and the procedure for data processing. We find the UAV measurement of the beam pattern agrees very well with the astronomical source measurement in the main lobe, but the UAV measurement can be extended to the fourth side lobe. The measured position and width of each lobe also shows good agreement with electromagnetic field simulation. This UAV-based approach of beam pattern measurement is flexible and inexpensive, and the technique may also be applied to other experiments.

Machine Learning for Improved Availability of the SNS Klystron High Voltage Converter Modulators

Beam availability has increased at the SNS, however, the targeted availability is greater than 95 %, while the SNS has failed to meet lower targets in the past. The HVCM used to power the linac klystrons have been one source of lost beam time and was chosen to explore using AI/ML techniques to improve reliability. Among the possibilities being explored are automating the tuning of HVCMs and predicting component failures such as capacitor aging, rectifier assemblies containing hundreds of diodes, and insulating oil degradation. The methodology pursued includes data cleaning, de-noising, post-analysis data labeling, and machine learning model development. We explore using Long Short-Term Memory and autoencoders for anomaly detection and prognostication used to schedule maintenance. We evaluate the use of model regularizers and constraints to improve the performance of the model and investigate methods to estimate the uncertainty of the models to provide a robust prediction with statistical interoperability. This paper describes the operational experience and known failures of the HVCMs and the proposed ML methodology and the preliminary results of training the AI/ML algorithms.

Need for portable accelerators in cultural heritage

Ion Beam Accelerators (IBA) centres have provided researchers with powerful techniques to analyse objects of cultural significance in a non-destructive and non-invasive manner. However, in some cases it is not feasible to remove an object from the field or museum and transport it to the laboratory. In this contributed talk, we present as a manner of a short review, examples of the benefits provided from these techniques in the study of material culture and discuss the initial steps to consider when investigating the feasibility of a compact accelerator that can be taken to sites of cultural significance for PIXE analysis. In particular, we consider the application of a compact, robust 2 MeV proton accelerator that can be taken into the field to perform PIXE measurements on rock art. We detail the main challenges and considerations for such a device.

Power Matching of an Ion Thruster to Solar Cell Power Output

A 20-cm-diam thruster was operated over a 2:1 range of output power, allowing for continuous matching of thruster power to a varying solar cell output level. The technique of matching power by varying either the ion beam current or the net accelerating voltage is described. Ion beam current control, implemented in thruster control loops, utilized existing laboratory hardware. Stable thruster operation was achieved over a range of 1000 to 2000 W. Bistable values of mercury propellant flow at the same discharge chamber and ion beam conditions were also observed.

Determination of atmospheric structure function by using a single coherent detector

A technique is described and analyzed for using the single beam laser receiver to measure the wave structure function of atmospheric turbulence. The measurement procedure is as follows: first, the telescope aperture is masked with an opaque screen having two small holes; one hole is covered and the output of the laser receiver is measured; finally, the output of the laser receiver is measured with both holes uncovered. By repeating these measurements for different hole separations, the wave structure function can be derermined.

A communications satellite system concept based on the AMPA experiment

This paper describes a system employing sophisticated satellites with steerable high gain, multibeam phased array antennas, which serve small low-cost user terminals. Adaptive techniques are used to form, point, and shape the beams. Pseudonoise signaling achieves user access/distress without requiring dedicated access/emergency channels. The L-band array has 32 elements, 34-dB gain; the user terminal has 15W transmitter, 3-dB gain antenna. The pseudonoise code and message structures are described. Approximately 100 users can be simultaneously acquired with success-probability exceeding 99%; system capacity can be increased by providing additional beams. System implementation is feasible in the Shuttle era.

Laser anemometer measurements in a transonic axial flow compressor rotor

A laser anemometer system employing an efficient data acquisition technique was used to make measurements upstream, within, and downstream of the compressor rotor. A fluorescent dye technique allowed measurements within endwall boundary layers. Adjustable laser beam orientation minimized shadowed regions and enabled radial velocity measurements outside of the blade row. The flow phenomena investigated include flow variations from passage to passage, the rotor shock system, three-dimensional flows in the blade wake, and the development of the outer endwall boundary layer. Laser anemometer measurements are compared to a numerical solution of the streamfunction equations and to measurements made with conventional instrumentation.

Solar Power Satellite /SPS/ antenna measurement considerations

An investigation carried out by the Georgia Institute of Technology that quantified the error contributors associated with both far-field and near-field antenna measurement concepts is discussed. Measurement errors are quantified into four sources: antenna range, structural/environmental, transmitter, and receiver. The study is carried out so as to control error sources to yield an overall gain uncertainty of plus or minus 0.04 dB. With regard to antenna positioners, it is found that a small angle positioner provides highly accurate scan capability over a plus or minus 1.5 deg sector for the purpose of beam integration. With regard to near-field measurement techniques, it is found that with adequate probe calibration and precision mechanical scanning, full 30 by 30 m mechanical module antenna measurements may be performed. The performance and relative cost considerations between planar near-field and conventional far-field methods indicate that the overall costs are roughly the same.

Surface recombination velocity measurement for silicon solar cells

For the design and fabrication of silicon solar cells approaching theoretical ultimate conversion efficiencies, surface recombination velocity plays a crucial role. A technique using a scanning electron microscope with pulsed electron beam has been developed for thy measurement of this important parameter for silicon surfaces. It is shown that the surface recombination velocity(s) increases by an order of magnitude when a freshly etched sample is left out for a few hours, presumably due to generation of surface states. A textured front surface field (FSF) cell with a high-low junction near the surface shows the effect of minority carrier reflection and an apparent reduction of s, whereas a tandem junction (TJ) cell with n+-p junction near the surface gives larger s value.

Plasma assisted surface coating/modification processes: An emerging technology

A broad understanding of the numerous ion or plasma assisted surface coating/modification processes is sought. An awareness of the principles of these processes is needed before discussing in detail the ion nitriding technology. On the basis of surface modifications arising from ion or plasma energizing and interactions, it can be broadly classified as deposition of distinct overlay coatings (sputtering-dc, radio frequency, magnetron, reactive; ion plating-diode, triode) and surface property modification without forming a discrete coating (ion implantation, ion beam mixing, laser beam irradiation, ion nitriding, ion carburizing, plasma oxidation). These techniques offer a great flexibility and are capable in tailoring desirable chemical and structural surface properties independent of the bulk properties.
