Real-time Fourier analysis is provided by "bucket brigade' charge-transfer shift register. Device is small, inexpensive integrated circuit which does analog-to-digital-to-analog conversion, data processing, and time delay.
Automated Data Acquisition and Reduction System (ADAR) evaluates damping coefficient and relative rigidity by storing four successive peaks of waveform and time period between two successive peaks. Damping coefficient and relative rigidity are then calculated and plotted against temperature or time in real time.
Two flexible pipes, attached to face mask, are connected to spirometers in mobile cart. Inhaled air volume is measured as it is drawn from one spirometer, and exhaled air volume is measured as it is breathed into second spirometer. Sensor is used to monitor heartbeat rate.
Apparatus retains all advantages of prior nondispersive infrared analysis systems and provides significantly more innumity to type of errors that may be introduced by geometric changes in analysis system. Technique also permits construction of instruments of lower weight, smaller volume, and smaller power consumption.
Types of instruments studied were magnetic sector, omegatron, quadrupole, and monopole. Experimental results obtained included absolute sensitivity to argon, relative sensitivity to ten gases (hydrogen, helium, neon, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide, krypton, and xenon), and cracking patterns for these gases.
System uses phase-locked loops to give real-time information on speech spectrum by tracking the fundamental and its first 19 harmonics.
Algorithm based on Taylor series expansion of Fourier transform has been developed and used for detection of cardiac arrhythmias in real-time electrocardiogram signal.
A mass spectrometric system for determining the characteristics of materials used in instrumental development and aerospace applications was developed. The desorption spectra of cesium that was ion-implanted into polycrystalline tungsten and the effects on the spectra of bombardment of the tungsten by low energy (70 eV) electrons were investigated. Work function changes were measured by the retarding potential diode method. Flash desorption characteristics were observed and gas-reaction mechanisms of the surface of heated metal filaments were studied. Desorption spectra were measured by linearly increasing the sample temperature at a selected rate, the temperature cycling being generated from a ramp-driven dc power supply, with the mass spectrometer tuned to a mass number of interest. Results of the study indicate an anomolous desorption mechanism following an electron bombardment of the sample surface. The enhanced spectra are a function of the post-bombardment time and energy and are suggestive of an increased concentration of cesium atoms, up to 10 or more angstroms below the surface.
A spectrometer was specifically designed and developed to observe grating spectra over a range of incidence angles from normal to almost grazing incidence. A unique scanning and focusing mechanism is utilized to keep the exit slit on the Rowland circle. Polarization effects in the vacuum were investigated, and efficiency measurements and spectral scans were made simultaneously with the spectrometer. Results of measurements are given. Applications of the spectrometer to the space program and to the study of contamination on optical surfaces are indicated.
An automatic Fourier transform diffraction pattern sampling system, used to investigate techniques for forestry classification of six band multispectral aerial photography is presented. Photographs and diagrams of the design, development and fabrication of a hybrid optical-digital Fourier transform detector are shown. The detector was designed around a concentric ring fiber optic array. This array was formed from many optical fibers which were sorted into concentric rings about a single fiber. All the fibers in each ring were collected into a bundle and terminated into a single photodetector. An optical/digital interface unit consisting of a high level multiplexer, and an analog-to-digital amplifier was also constructed and is described.
Two new methods are described to measure velocities and angles of incidence of charged cosmic dust particles with precisions of about 1% and 1 deg, respectively. Both methods employ four one-dimensional position-sensitive detectors in series. The first method utilizes a charge-dividing technique while the second utilizes a time-of-flight technique for determining the position of a particle inside the instrument. The velocity vectors are measured although mechanical interaction between the particle and the instrument is completely avoided. Applications to cosmic dust composition and collection experiments are discussed. The range of radii of measurable particles is from about 0.01 to 100 microns at velocities from 1 to 80 km/sec.

Pioneer 11 observations of the interaction of Jupiter's magnetosphere with the distant solar wind have confirmed the earlier Pioneer 10 observations of the great size and extreme variability of the outer magnetosphere. The nature of the plasma transitions across Jupiter's bow shock and magnetopause as observed on Pioneer 10 have also been confirmed on Pioneer 11. However, the northward direction of the Pioneer 11 outbound trajectory and the distance of the final magnetopause crossing (80 Jupiter radii) now suggest that Jupiter's magnetosphere is extremely broad with a half-thickness (normal to the ecliptic plane in the noon meridian) which is comparable to or greater than the sunward distance to the nose.
An approximate computational procedure is described for the analysis of angleplied laminates with residual nonlinear strains. The procedure consists of a combination of linear composite mechanics and incremental linear laminate theory. The procedure accounts for initial nonlinear strains, unloading, and in-situ matrix orthrotropic nonlinear behavior. The results obtained in applying the procedure to boron/aluminum angleplied laminates show that this is a convenient means to accurately predict the initial tangent properties of angleplied laminates in which the matrix has been strained nonlinearly by the lamination residual stresses. The procedure predicted initial tangent properties results which were in good agreement with measured data obtained from boron/aluminum angleplied laminates.
Program aids in equipment assessment. Independent assembly-language utility program is designed to operate under level 27 or 31 of EXEC 8 Operating System. It scans user-selected portions of system log file, whether located on tape or mass storage, and searches for and processes 1/0 error (type 6) entries.
A general formulation for the analysis of steady and unsteady, subsonic and supersonic potential aerodynamics for arbitrary complex geometries is presented. The theoretical formulation, the numerical procedure, and numerical results are included. In particular, generalized forces for fully unsteady (complex frequency) aerodynamics for an AGARD coplanar wing-tail interfering configuration in both subsonic and supersonic flows are considered.
The results are presented of a study to identify those helicopter technology areas which would result in the largest energy (or fuel) savings when applied to large tandem (100 passenger) civil helicopters in the 1985 time frame. Baseline aircraft using 1975 technology in the areas of powerplant, rotor efficiency, parasite drag and structure were sized to a very short haul mission of 100 N.M. and a short haul mission of 200 N.M. A systematic parametric analysis was then conducted to assess the impact of technology improvements. Projections of the technology levels that could be obtained in the 1985 time frame were made and the resources estimated to achieve them. Based on these data, the highest payoff (lowest energy) helicopter technologies are identified.
