Verification and validation of detonation-shock-dynamics relations for explosives described by general equation of state and chemical reaction models

Detonation shock dynamics is a powerful method to model the behaviour of High Explosives (HE). However in order to use this method, the underlying relationship between the local radius of curvature and the detonation speed must be known. Previous work has developed methods to calculate this effect using simple, single-step Arrhenius and polytropic gas, models for the chemical reaction and the equation of state, respectively. In recent years, more complex models for both reaction rates and equations of state have been developed which show better agreement with experimental data than these simple models, especially when considering condensed phase explosives.. This work presents the governing equations for solving these problems in a way that is generalised to use arbitrary equations of state as well as reaction models which may have more than a single step and multiple product species. This implementation is verified against exact solutions, demonstrating that the equations were implemented properly. The verified algorithm is then validated against experimental data and high fidelity simulations, showing that it is able to make accurate predictions in a regime where the underlying assumptions of the governing equations are valid. Importantly, this approach has many applications: from creating equivalent detonation shock dynamics models for existing reactive burn calibrations for HE; to developing new functional forms and calibrations of reactive burn models for condensed phase high explosives.

Specification Document for OC6 Phase II: Verification of an Advanced Soil-Structure Interaction Model for Offshore Wind Turbines

The Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) has developed a new macro-element model that accounts for the soil-structure interaction in offshore wind turbines. This development was done as part of the REDWIN (REDucing cost of offshore WINd by integrated structural and geotechnical design) project. The focus of Phase II of the OC6 project was to integrate REDWIN’s new soil-structure modeling capability into the coupled modeling tools that are used to design fixed-bottom offshore wind systems. The integration was then verified through a series of load cases using an example monopile-based offshore wind system examined within the WAS-XL project. This document provides the details needed to model the system examined in OC6 Phase II, using the new REDWIN modeling approach, as well as other standard modeling approaches, including apparent fixity, distributed springs, and coupled springs.

Software Verification and Validation Guidelines for Non-Linear Soil-Structure Interaction Analysis

Seismic analysis of structures, systems, and components (SSCs), including the consideration of soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects, is an important and required step in the design and licensing of nuclear power plant SSCs important to safety. Historically, the SSI analysis of nuclear structures has been performed using equivalent linear methods. However, there has been considerable industry investment in alternative seismic design and analysis approaches to reduce the construction cost of new reactors. Toward that goal and in alignment with the Licensing Modernization Project (LMP) framework, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (US NRC) has proposed a risk-informed, performance-based approach to seismic design that allows inelastic response in those nuclear plant structures not required for confinement. As a complementary effort, reactor designers are exploring nonlinear seismic analysis methods to optimize structural designs and reduce construction costs.

Midfidelity model verification for a point-absorbing wave energy converter with linear power take-off

In the preliminary design stage of a wave energy converter (WEC), researchers need fast and reliable simulation tools. High-fidelity numerical models are usually employed to study the wave-structure interaction, but the computational cost is demanding. As an alternative, midfidelity models can provide simulations in the order of real time. In this study, we operate Uppsala University’s WEC in a relatively mild sea state and model it using WEC-Sim. The model is verified based on OpenFOAM simulations. To analyze the ability of the midfidelity model to capture WEC dynamics, we investigate the system separately with 1, 2, and 3 degrees of freedom. We examine the contribution of viscous phenomena, and study both linear and weakly nonlinear solutions provided by WEC-Sim. Our results indicate that the viscous effects can be neglected in heave and surge motion, but not for pitch. We also find that the weakly nonlinear WEC-Sim solution successfully agrees with the computational fluid dynamics, whereas the linear solution could suggest misleading results.

CARETS: A prototype regional environmental information system. Volume 5: Interpretation, compilation and field verification procedures in the CARETS project

The production of the CARETS map data base involved the development of a series of procedures for interpreting, compiling, and verifying data obtained from remote sensor sources. Level II land use mapping from high-altitude aircraft photography at a scale of 1:100,000 required production of a photomosaic mapping base for each of the 48, 50 x 50 km sheets, and the interpretation and coding of land use polygons on drafting film overlays. CARETS researchers also produced a series of 1970 to 1972 land use change overlays, using the 1970 land use maps and 1972 high-altitude aircraft photography. To enhance the value of the land use sheets, researchers compiled series of overlays showing i cultural features, county boundaries and census tracts, surface geology, and drainage basins. In producing Level I land use maps from Landsat imagery, at a scale I of 1:250,000, interpreters overlaid drafting film directly on Landsat color composite transparencies and interpreted on the film. They found that such interpretation involves pattern and spectral signature recognition. In studies using Landsat imagery, interpreters identified numerous areas of change but also identified extensive areas of "false change," where Landsat spectral signatures but not land use had changed.

Analytic Verification of Flight Software

In the realm of space exploration, the biggest obstacle to widespread application of autonomy in flight software is not technical feasibility; it is doubt about its trustworthiness as a replacement for human-in-the-loop decision-making.
