Analysis of Compressibility Effects and Nonlinear Property Variations in a Supercritical CO2 Mixing Layer

Calculations are performed using the large eddy simulation technique to qualitatively assess the effects of fluid compressibility and thermodynamic nonlinearities on the dynamics of a supercritical flow field. Resulting data are also used to interrogate instantaneous subfilter-scale fields, as modeled by the mixed-dynamic Smagorinsky closure and gradient diffusion model. A three-dimensional wall-resolved calculation of a spatially evolving mixing layer composed solely of carbon dioxide is performed. This is followed by a coarse grid calculation to examine model performance as a function of resolution. Theoretical analysis indicates that the partial derivatives of density with respect to pressure and temperature are important modulators of the temperature and pressure field evolution, respectively. Results pertaining to subfilter velocity-velocity and velocity-temperature fields indicate that the models are most stressed in the regions where compressibility and thermo-fluid nonlinearities dominate the physics.

Computing Nonlinear Power Spectra Across Dynamical Dark Energy Model Space with Neural ODEs

I show how to compute the nonlinear power spectrum across the entire $w(z)$ dynamical dark energy model space. Using synthetic ΛCDM data, I train a neural ordinary differential equation (ODE) to infer the evolution of the nonlinear matter power spectrum as a function of the background expansion and mean matter density across ∼9 Gyr of cosmic evolution. After training, the model generalises to any dynamical dark energy model parameterised by $w(z)$. With little optimisation, the neural ODE is accurate to within 4% up to $k = 5\, h\, {\mathrm Mpc}^{−1}$. Unlike simulation rescaling methods, neural ODEs naturally extend to summary statistics beyond the power spectrum that are sensitive to the growth history.

The Spiral Galaxies Flat Rotational Velocity Curve Explained by the Constant Group Velocity of a Nonlinear Density Wave

The rotation velocity curves of stars in galaxies, the motions of pairs of galaxies, and the behavior of galaxies in clusters and super-clusters all indicate that there is a lack of mass on different scales in the universe. In this paper, we derive the expression for rotational velocity using the nonlinear density wave theory considering only stellar components and we show that such theory can support the observed flat rotational velocity curve due to the main property of the soliton wave, which is a constant group velocity of the wave. The surface mass density (SMD) function, used to derive gravitational potential gradient and rotational velocity, is not assumed but rather derived as a solution of the nonlinear Srödinger equation, on the contrary to the widely used, in the literature, exponential disk approximation. Three parameters relevant to the curve shape are the intensities of equilibrium SMD, the amplitude of the wave, and total angular velocity or differential rotation, equivalently. Since the shape of the rotational velocity is highly sensitive to the mentioned parameters, this theory eventually provides a method for a very accurate estimation of galaxy mass and angular velocity as well.

Virtual element approximations of the time-fractional nonlinear convection-diffusion equation on polygonal meshes

We extend the Virtual Element Method to a two-dimensional unsteady nonlinear convection-diffusion equation characterized by a fractional-order derivative with respect to the time variable. Our methodology is based on three fundamental technical components: a fractional version of the Grunwald-Letnikov approximation, discrete maximal regularity, and the regularity theory associated with non-linearity. We prove the method's well-posedness, i.e., the approximate solution's existence and uniqueness to the time-fractional convection-diffusion equation with a Lipschitz nonlinear source term. The fully discrete scheme inherently maintains stability and consistency by leveraging the discrete maximal regularity and the energy projection operator. The convergence in the L 2 -norm and H 1 -norm to various mesh configurations is validated by numerical results, underlining the practical effectiveness of the proposed method.

Nuclear Data Adjustment for Nonlinear Applications in the OECD/NEA WPNCS SG14 Benchmark -- A Bayesian Inverse UQ-based Approach for Data Assimilation

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Working Party on Nuclear Criticality Safety (WPNCS) proposed a benchmark exercise to assess the performance of current nuclear data adjustment techniques applied to nonlinear applications and experiments with low correlation to applications. This work introduces Bayesian Inverse Uncertainty Quantification (IUQ) as a method for nuclear data adjustments in this benchmark, and compares IUQ to the more traditional methods of Generalized Linear Least Squares (GLLS) and Monte Carlo Bayes (MOCABA). Posterior predictions from IUQ showed agreement with GLLS and MOCABA for linear applications. When comparing GLLS, MOCABA, and IUQ posterior predictions to computed model responses using adjusted parameters, we observe that GLLS predictions fail to replicate computed response distributions for nonlinear applications, while MOCABA shows near agreement, and IUQ uses computed model responses directly. We also discuss observations on why experiments with low correlation to applications can be informative to nuclear data adjustments and identify some properties useful in selecting experiments for inclusion in nuclear data adjustment. Performance in this benchmark indicates potential for Bayesian IUQ in nuclear data adjustments.

Determination of nonlinear resistance voltage-current relationships by measuring harmonics

Test configuration measures harmonic signal amplitudes generated in nonlinear resistance. Vacuum-type voltmeter measures low frequency sinusoidal input signal amplitude and wave-analyzer measures amplitude of harmonic signals generated in junction. Input signal harmonics amplitude must not exceed that of harmonics generated in nonlinear resistance.
