Space processing applications of ion beam technology

Ion thruster engines for spacecraft propulsion can serve as ion beam sources for potential space processing applications. The advantages of space vacuum environments and the possible gravity effects on thruster ion beam materials operations such as thin film growth, ion milling, and surface texturing were investigated. The direct gravity effect on sputter deposition and vapor deposition processes are discussed as well as techniques for cold and warm welding.

Nonpropulsive applications of ion beams

This paper describes the results of an investigation of the nonpropulsive applications of electric propulsion technology. Eight centimeter ion beam sources utilizing xenon and argon have been developed that operate over a wide range of beam energies and currents. Three types of processes have been studied - sputter deposition, ion beam machining, and ion beam surface texturing. The broad range of source operating conditions allows optimum sputter deposition of various materials. An ion beam source has also been used to ion mill laser reflection holograms using photoresist patterns on silicon. Ion beam texturing has been tried with many materials and has a multitude of potential applications.

Influences of chemical and thermal environments on delay in a Ti-6Al-4V alloy

Experiments were conducted within the framework of linear fracture mechanics to study the effects of chemical and thermal environments on crack-growth retardation (delay) in mill-annealed Ti-6Al-4V alloy under elemental load spectra. Attention is focused on the influence of hold time at high load on delay in a 3.5 percent NaCl solution at room temperature. It is shown that delay is strongly affected by hold time at high load, where delay is longest if the high-load excursion occurs at high temperature and the subsequent fatigue is at room temperature, and shortest if the temperature profile is reversed. The results suggest that residual stresses ahead of the advancing crack play an important role in delay. The significance of combined load and environment (chemical and thermal) effects in terms of modeling and life prediction procedures is discussed.

Experimental fatigue life investigation of cylindrical thrust chambers

The thrust chambers studied in the investigation have been designed for a possible use in the Space Shuttle main engine. An annular combustion chamber configuration was used, consisting of an annular injector, a liquid hydrogen cooled outer cylinder, which served as the test section, and a contoured water cooled centerbody which formed the throat. Twenty-two cylinders were fabricated by milling cooling channels into liners fabricated from the material to be evaluated. The three materials chosen for the liners include OFHC copper, Amzirc, and NARloy-Z. The cylinders were cyclically tested until failure occurred due to fatigue cracks in the hot-gas-side wall. It was found that cylinders with liners fabricated from NARloy-Z and aged Amzirc had the best cyclic life characteristics.

Auger profiling of 'abrupt' LPE Al/x/Ga/1-x/As-GaAs heterojunctions

Auger analysis in conjunction with ion milling was used to study depth profiles of 'abrupt' Al/x/Ga/1-x/As-GaAs heterojunctions grown by liquid-phase epitaxial (LPE) techniques. Results are presented on samples with x = 0.43, 0.60, and 0.85. The interface widths obtained are listed in a table together with the growth conditions and the layer thicknesses. The values for the layer thicknesses are in the range from 125 to 950 A. It is found that for thin layers the interface widths do not differ greatly from the average value of 110A.

Auger depth profiling of Au-Al/x/Ga/1-x/As interfaces and LPE Al/x/Ga/1-x/As-GaAs heterojunctions

An attempt is made to report Auger depth profiles produced in a UHF ion-milling Auger system for intentionally 'graded' Al(x)Ga(1-x)As-GaAs heterojunctions, 'abrupt' growth heterojunctions of the same material, and Au-Al(x)Ga(1-x)As interfaces. It is found that the interface widths of the 'abrupt' growth heterojunctions did not fluctuate greatly from an average value of 110 A and that 'graded' growth samples had interface widths of about 525 to 1500 A. The results for the Au-containing samples indicate that an oxide layer was present between the Au and the Al(x)Ga(1-x)As.

Low thermal flux glass-fiber tubing for cryogenic service

This paper describes analytical techniques, fabrication development, and test results for composite tubing that has many applications in aerospace and commercial cryogenic installations. Metal liner fabrication is discussed in detail with attention given to resistance-welded liners, fusion-welded liners, chem-milled tubing liners, joining tube liners and end fittings, heat treatment and leak checks. Composite overwrapping, a second method of tubing fabrication, is also discussed. Test programs and analytical correlation are considered along with composite tubing advantages such as minimum weight, thermal efficiency and safety and reliability.

The influence of composition, annealing treatment, and texture on the fracture toughness of Ti-5Al-2.5Sn plate at cryogenic temperatures

The plane strain fracture toughness K sub Ic and conventional tensile properties of two commercially produced one-inch thick Ti-5Al-2.5Sn plates were determined at cryogenic temperatures. One plate was extra-low interstitial (ELI) grade, the other normal interstitial. Portions of each plate were mill annealed at 1088 K (1500 F) followed by either air cooling or furnace cooling. The tensile properties, flow curves, and K sub Ic of these plates were determined at 295 K (room temperature), 77 K (liquid nitrogen temperature), and 20 K (liquid hydrogen temperature).

Elevated-temperature flow strength, creep resistance and diffusion welding characteristics of Ti-gAl-2Nb-1Ta-0.8Mo

A study of the flow strength, creep resistance and diffusion welding characteristics of the titanium alloy Ti-6Al-2Nb-1Ta-0.8Mo was conducted. Two mill-processed forms of this alloy were examined. The forged material was essentially processed above the beta transus while the rolled form was subjected to considerable work below the beta transus. Between 1150 and 1250 K, the forged material was stronger and more creep resistant than the rolled alloy. Both forms exhibit superplastic characteristics in this temperature range. Strain measurements during diffusion welding experiments at 1200 K reveal that weld interfaces have no measurable effect on the overall creep deformation. Significant deformation appears to be necessary to produce a quality diffusion weld between superplastic materials. A 'soft' interlayer inserted between faying surfaces would seemingly allow manufacture of quality diffusion welds with little overall deformation.

Pressureless sintered Sialons with low amounts of sintering aid

Two Beta prime - Sialons of composition Si2.6Al0.393y0.007O0.4N3.6 and Si2.6Al0.384Y0.014O0.4N3.6 were pressureless sintered from mixtures of Y2O3 and separately milled Beta -Si3N4, AlN, and SiO2. These Sialons had densities of over 98% of theoretical, four-point bend strengths of 460 and 155 MPa at room temperature and 1400 C, respectively, and 1400 C oxidation rates lower than those reported for hot pressed Si3N4 and for a stronger Sialon with 2.5 weight percentage Y2O3.

Study of thermal insulation for airborne liquid hydrogen fuel tanks

A concept for a fail-safe thermal protection system was developed. From screening tests, approximately 30 foams, adhesives, and reinforcing fibers using 0.3-meter square liquid nitrogen cold plate, CPR 452 and Stafoam AA1602, both reinforced with 10 percent by weight of 1/16 inch milled OCF Style 701 Fiberglas, were selected for further tests. Cyclic tests with these materials in 2-inch thicknesses bonded on a 0.6-meter square cold plate with Crest 7410 adhesive systems, were successful. Zero permeability gas barriers were identified and found to be compatible with the insulating concept.

Silicon crystals: Process for manufacturing wafer-like silicon crystals with a columnar structure

Wafer-like crystals suitable for making solar cells are formed by pouring molten Si containing suitable dopants into a mold of the desired shape and allowing it to solidify in a temperature gradient, whereby the large surface of the melt in contact with the mold is kept at less than 200 D and the free surface is kept at a temperature of 200-1000 D higher, but below the melting point of Si. The mold can also be made in the form of a slit, whereby the 2 sides of the mold are kept at different temperatures. A mold was milled in the surface of a cylindrical graphite block 200 mm in diameter. The granite block was induction heated and the bottom of the mold was cooled by means of a water-cooled Cu plate, so that the surface of the mold in contact with one of the largest surfaces of the melt was held at approximately 800 D. The free surface of the melt was subjected to thermal radiation from a graphite plate located 2 mm from the surface and heated to 1500 D. The Si crystal formed after slow cooling to room temperature had a columnar structure and was cut with a diamond saw into wafers approximately 500 mm thick. Solar cells prepared from these wafers had efficiencies of 10 to 11%.

Solar central electric power generation - A baseline design

The paper presents the conceptual technical baseline design of a solar electric power plant using the central receiver concept, and derives credible cost estimates from the baseline design. The major components of the plant - heliostats, tower, receiver, tower piping, and thermal storage - are discussed in terms of technical and cost information. The assumed peak plant output is 215 MW(e), over 4000 daylight hours. The contribution of total capital investment to energy cost is estimated to be about 55 mills per kwh in mid-1974 dollars.

Experimental observations of the chemistry of the SiO2/Si interface

Changes in silicon surface preparation prior to thermal oxidation are shown to leave a signature by altering the final SiO2/Si interface structure. Surface analytical techniques, including XPS, static SIMS, ion milling, and newly developed wet-chemical profiling procedures are used to obtain detailed information on the chemical structure of the interface. The oxides are shown to be essentially SiO2 down to a narrow transitional interface layer (3-7 A). A number of discrete chemical species are observed in this interface layer, including different silicon bonds (e.g., C-, OH-, H-) and a range of oxidation states of silicon (0 to +4). The effect of surface preparation and the observed chemical species are correlated with oxide growth rate, surface-state density, and flatband shifts after irradiation.

Electric fields produced by Florida thunderstorms

Twenty-five field mill sites provided data on the electric fields produced during both the intense and the final, less active periods of summer air mass thunderstorms in east central Florida. During the periods of intense lightning activity, time- and area-averaged fields were usually -0.8 to -2.1 kV/m, while for the less active periods, the field values were typically in the range of -2.3 to -4.3 kV/m. Furthermore, during the active storm periods, which represented about 27% of the total storm durations, about 71% of all lightning discharges occurred. Also, fewer lightning discharges in the final storm period than in the active period reached the ground.

Investigation of the fracture mechanism of Ti-5Al-2.5Sn at cryogenic temperatures

Fractography and metallographic sectioning were used to investigate the influence of microstructure on the fracture mechanism and fracture toughness (KIC) of normal interstitial and extra low interstitial (ELI) Ti-5Al-25Sn at 20 K (-423 F) and 77 K (-320 F). Plates of each grade were mill annealed at 815 C followed by either air or furnace cooling. These variations in composition and cooling rate resulted in differences in the volume fraction and internal structure of the dispersed beta phase and in the ordering of the alpha matrix. The ELI alloys were tougher than the normal interstitial plates. KIC of the furnace-cooled ELI plate was 25% lower than that of the air-cooled ELI material. Variations in cooling rate had no influence of KIC of the normal interstitial alloys. Fractography showed that a large portion of the fracture surfaces were covered with elongated dimples. Metallographic sections of specimens deformed at 77 K showed that these features form at the intersections of slip bands or deformation twins with grain or twin boundaries. Ordering and higher interstitial levels increase the local strain in slip bands resulting in void nucleation at lower macroscopic strains and lower KIC values.

Design and calculated performance and cost of the ECAS Phase II open cycle MHD power generation system

A 2000 MWe MHD/steam plant for central station applications has been designed and costed as part of the Energy Conversion Alternatives Study (ECAS). This plant is fueled by Illinois No. 6 coal, rejects heat through mechanical draft wet cooling towers, and includes coal processing equipment, seed reprocessing, electrical inversion of the MHD generator output and emission controls to current EPA standards. It yields an estimated overall efficiency of 0.483 (7066 Btu/kWe-hr), a capital cost of $718 per kWe (1975 dollars), and a cost of electricity at 65% capacity factor of 32 mills per kWe-hr. If the assumed life and reliability could be achieved with these performance parameters, the MHD system should prove attractive.
